This should be how the Empire/First Order should be portrayed. Highly Skilled, Well Trained, Well Educated, Superior weapons and strategy, Seasoned Veterans.
Welp, that has never happened, and if it did, they would actually have to think of decent and effective guerilla warfare strategies for the rebels, rather than just saying 'Here is obvious target, it is very overpowered and has killed countless random people we will never speak about again, please destroy it'.
Of course the same goes for the Rebel Alliance, who boasted a large number of Imperial Defectors. Many of its squadron leaders trained in Imperial Academies before defecting. It's one of the more plausible reasons they succeed as they benefitted from having trained with enemy vehicles and equipment. Shame the latest films treat both sides like they never even trained to use basic strategies to the point of sheer unbelievable idiocy. The opening space battle of Last Jedi is quite possibly the greatest showing of commanding officer incompetence on show in a major film outing.
Biggest mistake most movies make is to portray the "enemy" as incompetant and pathetic, the opposing side has to be RESPECTED, or theres no sence of credible threat, nor any sence of accomplishment in defeating the "enemy".

I mean the Resistance. These guys managed to defeat Palpatines Empire and never bothered to build a proper army/fleet for the New Republic!
This is possibly the perfect representation of what a space battle dogfight in Star Wars feels like. You get to see individuals do things inside the cockpit of their starfighters other than just fire.
I see a lot of these comments talking about how this looks so much better than modern Star Wars, but no one is mentioning how it manages to blend traditional animation and CG better than most anime from the past 15 years AND have a style that looks just as polished and detailed as some of the most impressive shows of the late 80's and early 90's. It's not just Star Wars that's gone downhill and is in trouble, it's the entire animation industry. Computers have made things easier, but they also made expected turnarounds faster and cheaper and lead to overall lower quality results. When you take your time and use them intelligently you can get results like this, and it's breathtaking.
As I understand in the Japan animation industry, the end goal of any anime series isn't the quality of the work, rather the consistent speed in which content is released. Take a look at one of my favourite current anime Overlord, it has rich lore, rich characters, rich places, yet the directors felt the need to cgi the Goblins, Skeletons, Soldiers, and other things that may need to be repeated over and over again, makes the whole scene look out of place and cheap. But it does cut time.
It's not actually about speed, not directly at least, as Kamari Peart said it's about money. Do it good, do it fast, do it cheap, but you can only pick 2. Speed has always been one of those two, but quality and price have varied back and forth depending on the series and time period. Back in the 80's and 90's you could reliably make money off of home video sales for quality works, like a lot of money. Old OVA's were single hour long episodes sold for the equivalent of $30-40 US (which would be more like $80 today). That sounds crazy today, but at the time home video and anime were still novel and considered worth it. Because of that high price tag though, people expected high quality. If you can make a lot of money by putting a lot of money in, by golly a company will do it, but if you can only get huge returns on 1 show out of 20, and most of your shows are just streamed or watched once on TV and sell really poorly in the Blu-Ray charts, you're going to throw everything at the wall as cheaply as possible to get something to stick. Just compare the old JoJo OVA to the more recent anime series. It's one of the only times you can see the exact same fights animated 25 years apart from each other. The newer one is generally considered to have the more appealing art style, but the older one absolutely demolishes the new one in terms of animation quality and pure detail. That's because it was an OVA with a huge budget per episode, because they expected a huge return per episode. The anime expected a modest return per set of episodes, so the budget is allocated accordingly. Only so many artists are able to work on each episode because there just isn't enough money to hire more, so they each have to work faster which naturally lowers what they can do.
Imperial Captain: **Strokes chin in deep, deep thought** "I've come up with a plan. We should shoot that Rebel Ship." Imperial Crewman: **sigh** "I can see why you get paid the big bucks, Sir."
I know this is a joke, but just wanted to say they were probably considering whether the ships were worth destroying or disabling for capture. No matter how big your capital ship is, you're running on limited munitions and energy and you don't want to waste either of that on moves that don't bring good results in a ship battle. Having laser cannons switching to stun/disable means less cannons shooting deadly lasers, which could leave them exposed to bombers/fighters or returning fire from enemy ships if they're not destroying or suppressing them.
He concludes that because it's fleeing it might have a vip aboard so orders it targeted exclusively with ions. It's not unfair to consider that for a moment especially as it's against standard imperial military doctrine.

@@mwnciboo Yeah the dialogue dubbing is terribly miss matched. All their Shields are up from the start. The interdictor doesn't turn on its Shields it alters it's disruption field from the mode that blocks hyperspace in a massive radius to the mode which disrupts ordinance in a close radius, and presumably right back once the immediate threat was gone.
Rebels have 1000 star fighters. Empire has 1,000,000,000,000 star fighters. Equipping that many star fighters with shields would bank rupt them. Also the Empire liked to rely on Big Ships rather then small ones.
I would also argue that adding shield generators could mess up the Imperial Navy Doctrine. Tie fighters, if I recall correctly, are supposed to be super quick, highly maneuverable, similar to the Japanese A6M Zero.

Joseph Perez This is just one battle. It makes sense that not every Rebel fleet made it. The Rebellion didn't win at all until the Battle of Yavin barring small hit and run attacks. Even destroying the Death Star was an act of desperation, they had to evacuate immediately anyway. They were just lucky to cause more losses to the Empire that day. As for force users. Yeah they were thought to be extinct except for Vader. The war still waged even without them in every battle.

Amazing.A truly strong set of "villains" which is humanized just by showing us their faces and them a slight bit of fear. This shows how incesibly underpowered the rebellion is compared to the Empire. All in a 7 minute video eith minimal dialouge.
and for the whole time, the applied visual rhetorics is exactly what I would call an evolved portrayal of the ww2. this is the key to Star Wars duality, as it plays with the human side of the antagonism, turning its characters into something more than just letting them be villains -- ones that a viewer could identify with -- but without evoking any historical context in the process.
As a kid watching Empire in 1980, you walked in all smug that Luke was going to rule the day and the 'bad guys' were again get their ass handed to them no matter what the title said. Walked out in utter shock after being tossed from emotion to emotion for nearly two hours. "Vader cut his hand off... right off like tossed it over a railing, gone. Han is a flat statue and the Rebellion is screwed." It was a goddamn long wait as a kid for 1983, to find out WTF was actually going on with the universe you had been drawn into hook line and sinker all those years ago with New Hope. No plot leaks, no teasers. Nothing. You waited 3 years and suffered through every theory and rumor that trickled down from any source you could find as a kid where there was no internet and no one to message and get an inside track like leaks today. It was a secret and we had to wait.
I think you got that backward. Disney turned the Stormtroopers into competent and intimidating soldiers, while under Lucas they couldn't hit the broadside of a barn and had their asses kicked by teddy bears with sticks. You wanna complain about certain story elements, fine, but the Stormtroopers and the Imperial (well, First Order) military in general greatly benefitted from not having Lucas at the helm. What I would complain about is how incompetent the Republic became.
I've always loved this. I appreciate how it slightly humanizes the Empire by showing them as not always faceless. Not to the point that they are redeemed, but just enough to raise the stakes overall for everyone involved. To tell you the truth. It's probably one of my favorite depictions of a Star Wars naval battle from almost anything in the franchise.
Asdf101 Solo is one of the most pointless prequels ever made and by far the most pointless Star Wars movie ever made. It barely added anything to the franchise.
This short never fails to impress no matter how many times I see it remastered in some way. And I still want to see a series around these imperial fighter pilots.

And no Holdo "ram at lightspeed" maneuver. What a joke that was. Did anyone notice at the end of Rogue One where the Rebels were jumping out of system and the Empire was jumping in system? The last Corellian Corvette jumping out rammed into the last Star Destroyer as it was jumping in. So, head-on collision with both vehicles moving at lightspeed. If you follow the same inertia dynamics, that would double the force of the impact just as it does when 2 cars have a head on collision. You can clearly see the Corvette crumple like a soda can against the hull of the Star Destroyer. One scenario holds true & one doesn't. I hate this new era of Disney SW. They can't even keep their continuity straight. In the SW novels, Luke and the Jedi Academy found an unused superweapon called the Sun Crusher. It had something called molecular armor, which made it indestructible. The purpose of the ship was to fly thru a sun at lightspeed, making it go supernova. The Jedi Apprentice Kyp Durron flew this ship thru the sun of a solar system where the Empire used on entire planet as a boot camp for training Stormtroopers, as well as having a shipyard where they made Star Destroyers. Even with the ship's inertial dampeners on full and protecting himself with a Force Cocoon, a pass thru just a gaseous object like a sun broke every bone in his body. He spent close to a year in a Jedi Healing Trance to recover. That's flying a ship thru a sun, which is what it was designed for. So imagine the force of 2 ships moving at lightspeed colliding head-on. The science just doesn't hold up. Sorry so long of an explanation. I hate the new SW. Give me fan fiction like this, Vader, or scene 38 of A new Hope reimagined any day, all day long.
@@jamesooten3659 I can't tell if you're criticizing Rogue One for the light speed mechanics, but if you are, then you're a dumbass for several reasons. 1. The Star Destroyer and the ships crashing into it aren't traveling at light speed. The Sun Crusher was retarded, as is a lot of the EU, and shouldn't be looked at to reference points because it's beyond ridiculous. 3. If you are going to criticize the light speed continuity in Disney Star Wars, then the blame should rest solely on Rian Johnson and The Last Jedi for failing to follow the light speed mechanics set before it in previous films, not on Rogue One since it came before Last Jedi and no light speed collision is present in that film. If these points do not apply to you then you are not a dumbass.

And more than a little bit of smugness.
Biggest mistake most movies make is to portray the "enemy" as incompetant and pathetic, the opposing side has to be RESPECTED, or theres no sence of credible threat, nor any sence of accomplishment in defeating the "enemy".
Watching Ep.7 & 8 and how ridiculously incompetent, the Empire eh.. I mean The First Order is,it's really baffling how these morons manage to conquer the galaxy in the first place. Not to mention the Rebels eh..
NiGHTSnoob this
Yeah, sadly that's not how you make money and this is extremely unviable to keep up without cutting corners; resulting in a similar low quality.
We should shoot that Rebel Ship."
Imperial Crewman: **sigh** "I can see why you get paid the big bucks, Sir."
It's not unfair to consider that for a moment especially as it's against standard imperial military doctrine.
also great at 5:41 when he waves his hand at his enemies even though his crew had already been given their orders to target and shoot, like he was pretending the lasers were coming from his fingers.
Or "Turning on the Shield now!"...ridiculous they hadn't already during an attack.

I love the fact that they actually show that the empire wont pay for shields on tie fighters while the rebels will
Rebels have 1000 star fighters.

The even more mind blowing thing is just taking apart a single small planet like Mercury would give enough raw material for trillions of Star Destroyers.

He goes the way of the dedicated producer with a vision. I respect that.
That old school (late 90's - early 2000's) mecha vibe. Awesome.

This was a better action sequence than 90% of any "New Star Wars" movies.

Asdf101 Nah, TFA was actually pretty good.

Well yeah but TFA was very similar to a new hope, so i just didn’t like that it lacked creativity.
Asdf101 Solo is one of the most pointless prequels ever made and by far the most pointless Star Wars movie ever made. It barely added anything to the franchise.
I love everything about this, and there’s even a Wilhelm Scream.

Thanks for making me feel old..
This could rival all of the new sequel trilogy, spin offs and that resistance series. AND ITS A FAN FILM!!!
This short never fails to impress no matter how many times I see it remastered in some way.
And I still want to see a series around these imperial fighter pilots.
Disney should have hired Paul Johnson instead of Rian Johnson.
For those unaware, Otaking77077 made the animation, his name is Paul Johnson.
I just redid the SFX and put star wars music in it for the remaster :)

After all these years I'm still convinced, being part of the Empire could turn you into a badass.
In 7:10, this video showed more Imperial competence than the entire 4 seasons of Star Wars: Rebels
Kaptin Barfbeerd The entire Star Wars movies*
Rebels, where ALL Imperial officers wear hats that cover their eyes. Rendering them blind lol (when in reality, just makes it easier to animate)
This 7 minute short was better than the entirety of The Last Jedi
Rian Johnson was probably like "Why doesn't my Star Wars look like that!!?"
It’s all relative, mate. But yes, this is truer Star Wars than The Last Jedi.
damn right!

Ro: "an hour or so-"
RC: "THEN WE SHALL DIE A EXPLOSIVE AND SLOW DEATH GOD FUCKING DAMN IT!!!!!!"
"Their defenses are thinning out. Do not relent. Show no mercy."
"Whew. Lucky you said that. I was on the verge of relenting."
"...wha..."
"You know. Because I've never shown any mercy before. I wanted to see what it feels like."

This is soo good. The shots are so expressive, I was drawn to the action the whole time even though there was no context to the story. This brings back the glory of the originals, it was like watching the originals! I hope you make more!
Is it cuz it's animated? It felt way more original trilogy to me. The way the shots are framed, the timing and the music.
Basically, if Zeta Gundam was Star Wars. Plus Macross judging by the "Itano Circus" missile movement and animation.
The animator is apparently a fan of that Golden Age 80's Anime style... as am I.

This showed why the Alliance avoids direct naval combat to a T.
The Star Destroyer just came out of light speed and was still while the ships that crashed into it were about to enter light speed but hadn't yet.
@@jamesooten3659you got a few things wrong.
it was a transport not a corvette and the sun crusher was intended to fire torpedoes not fly though suns.
@@williamt.sherman9841
Thanks for the correction, it's been quite a while since I had seen or read both. Still, the scene in R1 shows what a sham the Holdo maneuver was. No worries though, the Resistance is down to 10-12 members left (unless there's a secret enclave somewhere), so the Rebellion is effectively crushed. Thank you Disney, Rian Hohnson, & JJ for turning SW into Firefly. And that's insulting to Firefly.
