@tomr6955 I don't know tank tactics, but I feel like a tank commander would prefer to know if they're being targeted so they can try to maneuver to avoid getting shot.
Half German tanks broke down from mechanical problems, hardly brilliant engineering. Also their aircraft were technologically inferior to Allied aircraft.
@@numalesoybea1348 Not really they weren't. German aircraft were top notch for a majority of the war. They were the best in europe up until the latter part of 1944 when mainland germany started being hit hard, thus materials started running short and manufacture quality took a major dip. While the western allies had near infinite resources and had mainlands that weren't in any real danger. But until then, when aircraft like the Tempest started to see major service, Bf109s and Fw190 were among the most fearsome aircraft above european skies.
Yeah the T-34-76 (I think it’s a 76) sucked mostly but I don’t think it would have been destroyed on the frontal armor with HE but then again it’s a 88mm
@@F.R.E.D.D2986 it was so "terrible", the Germans made the Panther as reaction to counter it. In fact the T-34 had his issues, but a 76mm gun was enough to counter all German tanks of its time. It could possibly penetrate a Tiger I armor. Also the angled armor of the T34 was quite successful. But on the Internet you will read a lot of Bullshit when it comes to tanks, especially with "it could not deal with a Tiger". Even a lot of people consider the Sherman as a bad tank because of this. Fun fact: Most tanks are not meant to deal with a tank, espcially not a heavy one. Tanks have a lot of different battlefield tasks. Also there have been only 1500 Tigers and a few hundred Tiger II. Most bridges and port cranes at these times could not deal with more than 30 tons, so it is stupid to blame advancing armies likes the late war Sowjets and US for not using much heavy stuff. So the T34 and the Sherman in all its variants have been quite successfull tanks of there time.
Its mad to see how far these videos have come i watched a video from about a year ago and the quality has picked up massively please keep up the amazing work
I must say, the quality and level of detail in these animations are the best so far! Once again, a brilliant war story and animation, well done, Yarnhub.
As is often quoted : "Know the enemy AND know yourself." to secure the most decisive victory. To have a commander who does not lose that focus and a crew that has been mentored to the same UNDER FIRE is the strongest statement. That is why the best armies spend huge $$$ for Combined Arms Live Fire eXercises and simulations repeatedly. As close to reality as possible with goal of surviving longer than the enemy. (I actually wonder if "die and respawn" games/simulations are not actually deluding our skillsets and mindsets.....but games are JUST for fun....😅or are they?)
You mean IS-2 as this was the only tank capable of deflecting the 88mm shells, why? because the early IS series and Kv series tanks had atrocious fire rates and loading mechanisms and optics and overall combat effectiveness that had no protection with the combat ranges the tiger could fire at them and penetrate, while they had to close the gap and yet not know what or where they were being fired from. IS-2 is superior to Tiger 1 in the shell size penetration, range of gun, and armour (frontally). However the accuracy, fire rate and optics as well as combat effectiveness was no where near as effective as even the least unreliable tank of the Germans the tiger 2 (that says something) @@Красиваясоветскаядевушка
Exactly, but still the loading time was atrocious, it was even worse with the IS-2 obr.1944 (early) which had the double loading mechanism before being loaded in the breach. The largest tank battle of World War 2 took place not near Prokhorovka (Kursk), but near Brody in 1941. Correct. The Battle of Brody (other names in use include Battle of Dubna, Battle of Dubno, Battle of Rovne, Battle of Rovne-Brody) was a tank battle fought between the 1st Panzer Group's III Army Corps and XLVIII Army Corps (Motorized) and five mechanized corps of the Soviet 5th Army and 6th Army in the triangle formed by the towns of Dubno, Lutsk and Brody between 23 and 30 June 1941.
Too bad it was prone to break down, too little in numbers, just as vulnerable as any other tank to AT mines and easily destroyed when flanked or in air attacks.
The Soviets actually acknowledged their losses but the problem is who the kills are credited to. Since it's a general attack I am more into the Soviet perspective which accounts for multiple guns/artillery/tanks instead of just one Tiger tank with no support or whatsoever. Great video as always!
The other thing is that Germany used a lot of propaganda, so a lot of things, especially in the later war, is made up from real events Edit: I am well aware that the Soviet Union and Russia uses a shitton of propaganda
Actually German propaganda tried to make the SS look good. So I really doubt the German perspective. But none the less, having 10 kills a day would be fine as well.
I really like the perspectives and the use of German and Russian language here, great job. It's interesting that a lot of the understanding of Kursk as a whole has come from Soviet sources that have only recently begun to be challenged as unreliable. There are also some German-led myths that pervade to this day, such as the idea that the offensive was called off because Hitler diverted units to Southern Italy. I think in this case it's fairly apparent the Germans embellished the role of Staudegger (who died in 1995, not 1991) for propaganda purposes, but the overall nature of the battle was more or less as they depicted it.
this reminded me of the Crossroads scenario in Sprocket, where you have to fight a single King Tiger, which is in a really good position and is practically invincible
Great idea to use both perspectives, kind of wished you added in the t-70 tanks you mentioned but were not in the video which was a bit confusing. As well as some of the Tiger's turret movement but a bit jittery. Other than that tad criticism great video!
I have listened to quitw a few first hand accounts from German tankers, and these sorts of occurrences where more frequent than we would think, because a lot of them werent even recorded, as i remember one of the famous tankers from the eastern front said, that on the eastern front, they were always outnumbered in tank battles, and the german tanks could fight like 10 russian tanks each, and in the end it was only the sheer numbers of the enemy tanks that would overwhelm them, as they would run out of ammunition. The same went for sherman tanks, to the panzers, they were like popcans with a peashooter mounted. This of course did begin to change in the end stages of the war though, as the allies wised up and increased frontal armor thickness and mounted bigger guns.
It is little facts like this that concern me today when people brag about the Technological edge of the U S. Military (of whom I was a proud 20 year member and happy to salute the skill we have behind the tech.) We have to keep opponents off our soil to guarantee success.
M-18 and M-36, whose job was eliminating tanks, had very impressive kill ratios. This wasn't realized, and tank destroyers began to be considered obsolete.

I would love it if Yarnhub did a video on the Monchy 9 of Newfoundland. 9 men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment positioned at Monchy-le-Preux during the Battle of Arras in 1917 hid behind shrubbery and defended the town from a German force anywhere from 200 - 300 men strong for 11 hours to prevent a German break through. I think it is a very cool and very underrated battle that sounds like the plot of a movie.
@@samuelgordino The Newfoundland Regiment had been almost wiped out. When roll call was taken, only 68 men answered their names - 324 were killed, or missing and presumed dead, and 386 were wounded.
@The.National.Socialist thats because Germans produced lesser tanks than Soviets who were just pumping out mass produced tanks.out of the 1400 tigers hardly 6 remain out of which only one is operational remaining all were completely destroyed of abandoned by their own crew due to the beautiful fuel efficiency and reliabilty and Soviet aces like Oskin destroyed 3 king tigers in ogledow using inferior t34 85 out of 500 king tigers produced.if Germans produced more,Soviet kill counts too will be greater.also German kill counts were highly inflated for propoganda and you can see that right in this video's end
@The.National.Socialist my n@zi kameraden if you need to win a war you need a large quantity of tanks.tank on tank engagements were rare and the primary role of the tank was to support infantry and storm strongpoints.in this role, the Soviets required large numbers of tanks to supply their vast infantry units.the t34 might have not been the best but it got the job done and was always there to support infantry attacks unlike tigers for instance which were rare.German propoganda inflated kill counts and you can see that right there in the end of the video concerning staudeggers kills a brilliant example of how Germans counted kills.and only 3 king tigers because there were only 500 produced which is shabby when compared to 50,000+ t34
@The.National.Socialist my Nazi kameraden it the Soviets who are attacking here and not the Germans and most German tankers would just lay in a position and attack the soviet tanks ambushing was the prime strategy of aces like wittmann and carius.kolobanov confronted 22 tanks repeatedly received fire from panzers but none of them penetrated

I think it would be interesting if you did videos covering stories from the smaller powers in WW2 - Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Greece, Yugoslavia, etc. They had very interesting stories that barely anyone hears about just because they are from the less well known countries, and all stories should have the chance to be told and remembered.
This was a fantastic video, if y'all would be open to suggestions I would love an episode recounting the Italians in the war, perhaps the Devil Commander Amedeo Guillet, Unatu Endisciau, the action at Bir El Gubi, or the many kerfuffles the Folgore took part in.
Thank you for telling both sides of the story. It's rare that I see this on WWII channels, especially when action is done by the German side. They will only usually explain a one sided victory and how the commander received the Knights Cross with chitlins and collard greens on the side. You showed that there is more to just one Tiger standing alone and it depended on infantry, artillery, and aircover to succeed. Also the Russian faction had a rough going from their side.
I like the way with the perspectives, very cool. The Tiger was an absolute beast, RIP to everyone who died there. I‘m curious if you could make videos about even heavier Tiger 2‘s or even Jagdtigers.
Everything I ever read about this engagement was that it was a single tiger that was being repaired. Only the Russians claim otherwise. My gut tells me that the lone tiger likely was doing so much so fast, from such a crazy distance, that it felt like artillery and God knows what else was firing on them. Nice to see it animated though!
To put it simply, there was no way it was a lone tank that took 22 Russian tanks, it's simply not possible given the short time the battle went on for, even the fastest loader could not load 22 rounds one after the other at pace before the end of the battle, it was most likely a group of tanks, or artillery, or the stuka formation that took out the majority of the tanks and the tiger might have only gotten no more than 10-15 tanks, especially considering the distances and constant maneuvering of the tank and targets, there is no way it was one tank.
@igameidoresearchtoo6511 there were 51 kills on the particular front 22 was by the tiger though 51 were attributed to the tiger and it was powerful enough to be feared like the mg42 by the allies shame this was made under a bad political leadership

@@paulgrundy6864 Ok. Yeah that's pretty accurate but I would note that the Tigers were no less flammable but rather they were on the defensive. A disabled Sherman would be shot until it burned to avoid repairing it. A disabled Tiger was captured and couldn't be repaired by the Germans.

It is very interesting to see how different accounts of the war clash. Not just this example but across all conflicts.
Finnish and Soviet accounts of partisan attacks are diametrically opposed to each other too.
Yeah I like how the German account is that a tiger commander took out 22 tanks, when the Soviet tankers were driving with no maps into heavy artillery, anti tank infanty, and even taking aerial bombardment
The horror of not knowing if your tank would be the next one to explode.
@tomr6955 nope
@tomr6955 I don't know tank tactics, but I feel like a tank commander would prefer to know if they're being targeted so they can try to maneuver to avoid getting shot.

German Engineering during WW2 was insane but it was no use against the quantity of Sherman's and T-34's. R.I.P every solider who died in WW2.
They lost almost 45,000 t34s to Germany. Mind blowing that Russia just never ran out.
Exactly their gear was the best in the world at the time yet roughly 1500 tigers is nothing against 40,000 Sherman's
@@jojomaster7675 I got the claim about aircraft from Heinz Guderian who said it after the war.

@@F.R.E.D.D2986 Why does everyone say they are good?! like they were in theory but they were rush produced and I bet poorly trained crews
Yeah the T-34-76 (I think it’s a 76) sucked mostly but I don’t think it would have been destroyed on the frontal armor with HE but then again it’s a 88mm
@@mr_kb1420yea its the t34 76 confir ed in the video

"He knows his machine"
HE KNOWS HE ANGLED HIS MACHINE.
The Soviets had a saying:
-A T-34 always tips its hat to a tiger. Due to the Tiger tank usually popping the turrets off of T-34’s!
IS-1 joining the game:
T34 85
Is-2..
Exactly, but still the loading time was atrocious, it was even worse with the IS-2 obr.1944 (early) which had the double loading mechanism before being loaded in the breach. Plus the optics were better, however not German 9c turmzielfehrnrohr optics good and worse is that generally the tiger 1 could penetrate at 1000m a distance the IS-2 still had trouble seeing at.

I LOVE the addition of the actual photo's taken during the war. Keep up the great enjoyable video's!
The main weakness of the soviet tanks in world War 2 was the lack of communication between tanks
And visibility. Those defects combined to give Soviet tankers a small fraction of the situational awareness of the Germans.

The Soviets actually acknowledged their losses but the problem is who the kills are credited to. Since it's a general attack I am more into the Soviet perspective which accounts for multiple guns/artillery/tanks instead of just one Tiger tank with no support or whatsoever. Great video as always!
The other thing is that Germany used a lot of propaganda, so a lot of things, especially in the later war, is made up from real events
Edit: I am well aware that the Soviet Union and Russia uses a shitton of propaganda
Well one very unbelievable thing about the Soviet perspective is that the T-34s had radios... in real life, very, very few T-34s had radios.

I think in this case it's fairly apparent the Germans embellished the role of Staudegger (who died in 1995, not 1991) for propaganda purposes, but the overall nature of the battle was more or less as they depicted it.
absolutely a marvelous presentation of a single combat! I'm punching air right now for not having found out about this channel earlier!
this reminded me of the Crossroads scenario in Sprocket, where you have to fight a single King Tiger, which is in a really good position and is practically invincible

Tiger was a nightmare
That is the reason it was tiger
Everything I ever read about this engagement was that it was a single tiger that was being repaired. Only the Russians claim otherwise. My gut tells me that the lone tiger likely was doing so much so fast, from such a crazy distance, that it felt like artillery and God knows what else was firing on them. Nice to see it animated though!
Or its typical lies and embellishment to make your loss sound less embarassing , communists always do that sorta thing
Technically 88mm of tiger was a artillery gun i mean anti everything gun
@@ap-dk5yw I know. I love the technology The Germans created during WWII. Shame it was used for evil though.
@igameidoresearchtoo6511 there were 51 kills on the particular front
