- Chris Harris speaks plainly to Top Gear magazine's Jack Rix about some of the latest SUVs and off-roaders. Expect no-nonsense views on the BMW X6, Porsche Cayenne, Ford Bronco, Mercedes G-Wagen and Ineos Grenadier as well as on how the new Land Rover Defender compares with the old model. As for electric pick-ups, well, no spoilers on what Harris thinks of the F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T and Hummer EV.

This is why we love Harris. No filter, no consideration, superb driving skill , valid opinion and sensible thinking. Please grace us with more grumpy Chris!
Grumpy Harris is the best Harris. I love his utter disdain of SUV’s! 😅
So few people speak from their heart, clad Chris still does! 💎
He’s got a stinking I’m better than you attitude. Posh boy thinking he’s not. Good driver though.
All of these just explain clarkson too lmao
Meh. I still prefer the original 3 hosts. Clarkson, May, and Hammond are best in my opinion.
"A bad advert for our species" - the best description of a Cullinan to date.
I LIKE CHRIS. BUT MOCKING SUVs AND THEN ADMITTING HES GOT G WAGON GANG BOX IS PRETTY IDIIOTIC. RR VELAR MAKE WORLD 100000000x NICER PLACE. ONE OF THE MOST INCREDIBLE LOOKING HIGH FOUR DOORERS IN AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY.
Nah U just mad you cant afford one.
I could sit and listen to Harris being interviewed about cars for hours and still not get bored

"Just get an estate car." Words of wisdom at 1:29.
VW ID Space. Sad that won't be a real car anytime soon. FYI the base is RWD.
haha, "the BMW X6, a pox on humanity" brilliant
The coupe SUV is just tricking people back into saloons 😂
For more money.
Chris Harris is a car manufacturer's worst nightmare, he doesn't give a toss, what a journalist!
What a journalist should be
*flashbacks to being blacklisted by Ferrari*
@@jus1029ph Wasnt it Lambo?
@@charmingpeasant9834 nope Ferrari. Lamborghini is VAG so less likely to get upset as opposed to Ferrari, who are renowned for their arrogance.
He's been banned from driving press cars from Ferrari (cos ferrari), Lamborghini after taking the piss out of their cars several times, and also by Aston Martin after crashing a DBS into a verge trying to get an oversteer shot when he worked for Autocar in 2008.
We really need an hour long episode of Jack and Chris talking about cars.
This was most likely a one hour long video. They divided it to short ones and give us bit by bit a taste of it, like a crack dealer. It's working, I'm addicted now.
Collecting Cars podcast although there's no Jack.
One of the few automotive jurnalists that has his opinion and say it.
When i listen to Chris, its like i hear the echo of myself ....if i would be Interviewed i would give the same answers.
I hope, Chris will not change..never,because we have a big need of honest jurnalists with great skills.
Just love these chats with Chris. Proper car chat. Could watch/listen to them all day. More please!
'Just get an estate car!'
BOOM! Thank you Chris! (Current owner of an A6 Avant 3.0 TDI, formerly other A6 Avants and a Volvo 940 Estate!).
Whilst he drives a G-wagon ...
You didn't even ask him about the ultimate SUV or Off-Roader... the Land Cruiser.
what? they're Briittish.
They'll never accept that.
They have Land Rover.
@@XayuapChris actually owns a Land Cruiser
Absolutely agree. And a 4 tonne E-Hummer defeats the object. The best off roaders have always been lightweight little mountain goats. Suzuki Jimny/Samurai, Series Land rover's, Earlier Jeep Wranglers etc.
"Earlier" Jeep Wranglers don't hold a candle to modern ones. FYI. Comparing a CJ to a modern Jeep is like comparing a '67 Mustang to a current one. Yes, they are cooler -- but the performance is night and day.
@@JeanPaulConnock Depends on the situation. Off road ability is not just about performance. The point i was making is that a heavy modern 4x4 will (most of the time) be out performed off road by a lighter simpler one. In the U.K. at least if your faced with deep mud or snow then you'd be better off in an old series land rover than a new defender.
@@JeanPaulConnock nope, you dont got any Clue what you talking about. A Mustang is a sports car, off course they got faster/better! But Off Road is about Size, toughness, reliability and robust mechanical parts.
@@carhawara3394 I've owned several of both, all built, but bought. My experience tells me that a Jeep with lockers front and back and hundreds of pounds feet more torque is always better. So does a little common sense, honestly.
@@JeanPaulConnock bro, you basicly fgd when a wire burns through and than a 67 jeep will have to come and Pick your more torque ass up.
No mention of the Mk4 Jimny?
...proper off-roader and compact at the same time. Win-win in my book.
The design is also timeless (IMO) and the limited supply will keep residuals super high, making the car a good contender as a future classic.
Any Jimny got that, the latest is just the newest. Also Samurais, First gen Vitaras and Sj
Great little thing, I'm sure Chris would say.
I own a 2016 Wrangler JK in the UK and actually use it. Granted I'm talking Lake District and not Utah but we love it so much we're getting the new JL Rubicon.
Awesome off road and starts conversation in every car park.
This is what a car program should be-straight talking, shooting from the hip-brilliant!
if you ever need a frank and honest opinion on ANYTHING car-related, that resonates with >99% of the car-loving population, listen to Chris.
The confidence it what Chris knows about cars is just awesome I love it 👏
Chris Harris and Tiff Needell should head up top gear. What a wonderful and unsavoury combination that would be!
Tiff is outdated
LOL. Every time I hear this guy (Harris) talk, it feels like someone else’s voice sounding off while I’m talking to myself in my head. It’s just uncanny how his impressions of the motoring community and the vehicles that populate it are literally IDENTICAL to mine. And when he loves something, he uses the absolute perfect words to express the feeling or emotion that vehicle itself or specific attribute/characteristic instills. He is literally my favorite person to watch while dissecting an automotive experience. 👍🏻😎👍🏻
I’ll agree with this.
If you drive something new you’re not taking it off road. I off-road in an almost 20 year old Toyota. That’s the real deal.
took my brand new jeep wrangler off road and the transmission oil filter housing immediatly broke
Love the clarification in the ending line.
Chris 'arris, best thing to ever happen to Top Gear.
One measure of appraisal allotted to you, Mr Harris!
...and he didnt mention his Landcruiser :( Love a bit of Chris on cars. Keep this up. I used to love his Best Hatchback/estate/sportscar etc... in 5 minutes segments he used to do on topgear. "and now the Vauxhall Insignia....Not a bad looking car but why would you" :)
Damn, I love these Chris Harris perspectives. More please.
Absolute unit of proper journalism
The worst part about SUVs is that anyone driving them down a tight country road is too afraid to get within a meter of the nearest hedge
Damn; that's frustrating enough in the US, so I can't imagine dealing with it over the pond.
Massive Chris fan, but the reasons he has his G Wagon are the same as why most people have an SUV.
Would love to see a Sasquatch bronco on top gear. Pls and thank you.
I recently spent 3 hours being taught all about proper offroad driving by a police driving instructor. How to drive in sand, mud, hills, across rivers and lakes. In my own vehicle. Which happens to be a Porsche Cayenne. Yes, I own an SUV which most people would never take offroad but I do and it's remarkably capable.
They may be capable, but are they durable and reliable enough that you would feel comfortable to take them to remote places?!
@@aabidamn probably as reliable as anything from Land Rover these days. Nothing like as reliable as a land cruiser I guess but more than sufficient for the amount of off road access I need. Had an estate before but it lacked a few inches of ground clearance. In the interest of sense, I hasten to add that I didn’t specify insanely massive rims with sprayed on rubber :)
Protect Chris at all costs !!!
Agree with Chris completely. Drove a G-Wagen 240 Diesel when I was in the army, fantastic piece of engineering. Really slow, really functional, really good looking and unstoppable off road. Oh, and it could run on anything even remotely flammable. It's one of the only offroaders/SUVs I like, together with the Fiat Panda 4x4.
Just like Toyota Land Cruisers
His comment on the Cullinan we spot on and hilarious.
What's the difference between daily driving a Defender, which according to Chris makes you a knob, and daily driving a GT3, which Chris does, and admits he doesn't track it? Why is one a waste of energy and one is fine? Neither is being used as it was intended.
That is going to be an unpopular opinion but a valid point.
Because one of those is aerodynamic and lightweight thus more economical and the other one is a heavy brick that uses more resources to achieve the same result. And i have seen Harris' touring on track more then i have seen most new defenders off-road
GT3 is still great on the right roads. Windy low traffic areas. And the handling benefits of a GT3 can be felt even in normal driving compared to a regular car. Also while the GT3 makes a lot of power it's not an obnoxious amount of power. The GT3 touring is meant to be the every day GT Porsche
Vs the people who buy a defender and then never offroad. They are never using it in a way that plays to its advantages, so then its just wasteful. There are no tangible on road benefits of a defender over other kinds of cars
@@jaimykok6533 is that why he himself has compared the 911R to a Peugeot 205 street rallye and said the 95 hp car is more fun than the 500 hp one on a narrow twisty road that most people tout the 911R ot Gt3 element?
@@samharper5881 sure the 911 line is probably the most dailyable supercar but they are still overkill for most narrow roads given the power. The only place you can actually use 3rd gear on them while revving higher than 5k rpm is the highway. Don't get me wrong, the 911 is the greatest sport car brand ever created and I would want one of each, but let's not pretend they are better than mallcrawlers in terms of their utility, economy other than a good steering feel. And I love steering feel, but having 500 hp I can use rev out for 5 seconds daily on my commute and have fun with twice a month in the twisties is no better than a Land Cruiser you get because you go fishing twice a month on a compacted trail.
love how Chris always looks so pissed off when SUV's are mentioned haha
This lighting and format suck. Not saying the content is bad but all that white and light washes things out.
What's sad about vehicles like the G Wagon is it's moved so far away from it being a proper G, that it's kinda sad. I stuck my head under one and I was shocked the fuel tanks are just exposed, with no skid plates or protection of any kind. Yet they still give it 3 locking diffs and a hi/low transfer box. I have no issue with companies taking their offroaders and luxing them up. Toyota gets this with the land cruiser lineup. But the G only now comes (at least here in North America) as the top-end model. They still make the hardcore version with solid front axels and a hose-down interior, but they won't sell it outside of Africa. You won't find it listed anywhere, you need to look up G Class professional and you will see what we cant have.
Chris Harris, is a proper BBC Top Gear presenter.... He says exactly what needs to be said...!! He knows his "trade".... No flys on this guy at all... 👍👍👍
Absolute spot on re old Defender and Bling Defender
I hate how little content of Chris Harris just talking about cars there is. I want more. More. Mooooooooore. (Kylo Ren meme here)
Harris is the only reason Topgear still exists. He's literally carrying the show
I own a bronco and it’s an amazing everyday on road and off road. I think it’s the best
I'd like to see a conversation between Chris Harris and Jason Cammissa (a funny, cantankerous American auto journalist). That would be great entertainment. They're both very knowledgable, funny, no bullshit types.
As always, I couldn’t disagree with a single word. Imagine the tw8t that drives a 4 ton e-hummer.
Old defender over new defender
Marcke 2010 i agree. 4 ton is just sooo crazy
Poms have no right to discuss Pick-Ups/SUV's ... Period!

These videos with Chris are the only reason I come here.
Hope the Ineos Grenadier is a success!
Ha! This was immensely satisfying to watch. I drive an 80 Series Land Cruiser, which is an incredible vehicle ( I live in the sticks of northwestern Malibu, and I need it, especially during the rainy winter). She has served me well.
No mention of the Jimny? Or Kei Trucks?
Don’t get the defender?
I currently live in a third world country and I find SUVs (even the non proper 4×4 ones) actually are very usefull to live with. Potholes are common including on motorways. FYI potholes here are a different breed than what you called potholes in the UK and other first world countries.
There are also speed bumps everywhere. Because the police couldn't be bothered handing out speeding tickets, so the locals took matters into their own hands and build those horrific speed bumps on their own. If you're in housing areas, you'll find them in almost every 10 metres.
Driving an SUV here gives me more confidence in driving not only because of the extra visibility, but also it gives me a more piece of mind knowing that I would barely hurt my car whenever I encountered those potholes and speed bumps.
Agree on every single point.
Love Harris, this series of vids are amazing, best videos.

Chris is the best.
When are you guys starting the theatre tour of this?
Cullinan looks like the end-result of if Rolls were tasked to make a London taxi.
As we progress to higher tech more environmentally efficient vehicles, we consistently make them unnecessarily larger and heavier, undoing all the progress made.
It's not like super efficient electric cars don't exist
I was sus on Chris giving off road advice but he's obviously done his homework. Good on him 👏.
Part of my respect for Chris Harris is based on my assumption that as a contrarian were he to be an American he would never drive an F-150 unless it was a red Ford Lightning maybe.
I have a Nissan Patrol GU wagon, can you get them in the UK?

Im surprised they didnt mention all the offroad benefits that electric vehicles have. They make offroad gas powered cars practically obsolete.
Always agree with what Chris has to say.
Big Respect to Chris Harris for attacking energy thirsty excessive vehicles. Surely BBC has to make $ on ads but there were the times in our history of a complete madness when the decision whether to collaborate or resist made all the difference.
The BBC doesn’t have ads, it’s funded by tv licenses. Surely the only concern would be car companies they criticise not lending cars to them anymore, though only Ferrari tend to be that petty.
I also don’t like SUV’s I have a question for you.. why after 9 years has no manufacturer made a hot-hatch EV? In fact my BMW i3s is still the quickest EV 0-60 6.4 seconds of any EV under £40k WHY? Surly we should be in the 5’s by now.
In the US we've had the Chevy Bolt for awhile now, it's quite a bit quicker than the i3 and drives shockingly well for what it is. It wasn't sold in Europe but y'all are getting the ID.3 GTX soon which is a hot-hatch EV, but it won't be sold in the US :(
@@CrazyWeeMonkey and the bolt catches 🔥 lol
@@garrycroft4215
That makes it the HOTTEST of hot hatches
@@CrazyWeeMonkey seriously though I’m looking forward to seeing the ID3 GTX could have the ID4 GTX running gear which gives this nearly 3 ton SUV a 0-62 time of 6.2 so should be well into the 5’s a first hot-hatch EV for sure.
Because an actual good hot hatch is exciting, light and cheap. That's not possible yet with an electric drivetrain but very soon might well be. Looking forward to it!
SUVs has a perfect logical place in the country with decent roads but with say bad winter conditions. Not for going off road, but makes perfect sense to drive like out where my parents live; decent roads but if there's a blizzard you might suddenly have a quarter of a foot of snow, or ice and slush. For driving to get Pizza in town? Heck no.
