Runs forever. We have a 2002 model thats flawless still.
I know a farm contractor in Cork Ireland who bought the older version of this new in 2003 with the 4.2L straight 6 diesel and he still has it, uses it all the time and has around 600,000 miles on it from new and it never misses a beat. He refuses to get rid of it, it's pulled big fendt tractors from fields that broke down and it's a complete donkey that NEVER lets him down.
That engine is even more reliable than the 4.5 v8
We live in Aus - This is a legendary car here in Australia - in our family we have three LCs all of which are over 700,000 KM on the clock... These cars get used in here like they are meant to be... one of our LCs has been to every off-road track in AUS and is still like a new car...
Land Cruiser King in Never Never
My GXL V8 ute was a beast... I loved that thing, had it as a company car when I worked for a mining company in Kalgoorlie. I used it as a 4WD work ute every single day and in the most demanding of conditions. There was almost nothing it couldn't take in its stride. If anything, I'd say the V8 was a bit too powerful for 99% of what people would need and probably not worth the extra money unless you really need it. It never even hinted at letting me down, no matter what the temperature or task, but thank goodness I never had to pay for the fuel! It was shocking how thirsty it was when it was being worked.
But as the saying goes: If you wanna go to the outback, take a Land Rover. If you wanna come home again, take a LandCruiser.
Out there, nothing else will do.
Yea i bet it's hit every dirt track that a corolla could get down. People are taking rwd cars along the tele.
Deep down everyone especially closetdd cruiser owners know that if you plan to do any actual off roading you get a nissan patrol.

Long after the current trendy suvs and crossovers have been recycled in to a fridge or a dishwasher this thing will still be plodding along effortlessly anywhere you take it. What a machine.

I nearly got a new LC as a Xmas present to myself 2 years ago. I was drunk at the time, and next day thought maybe not. It wasn't unaffordable but I couldn't justify it at the time as I was looking to buy a flat. I would like one though as it would last for decades until they find a new way to power electric cars.
@@oddities-whatnot They last decades if meticulously maintained. Unfortunately rust really kills them in the UK. So many have 'dangerous' MOT fails by year 10 due to rust and dodgy repairs.

Toyota 4WD's are the singular choice for use in outback Australia.
It's also the singular choice throughout Africa and also the only SUV United Nations uses.
I own one of these in Australia and I agree 100%. Put a lift and some tougher tyres and these things are just fantastic in the most remote places you want to travel to.
A Land Cruiser is not just a car, it's something you look after for the next generation.

Nailed it. I have an 80 series Land Cruiser and every single thing on the truck still works perfectly. This paired with my GT3 are all the car I will ever need.
I would like to get a 200 series but I don't want to down grade from a 80 series

I have a Toyota FJ Cruiser and a 981 GT4, so I have the lite version of your ideal garage. The FJ has seen hard use offroad, with several long trips from Cape Town up into africa proper. It has a snorkel and lifted OME suspension and has managed water crossings in the Okovango Delta midway up the windscreen at times. Never skipped a beat. It's true what Chris says about Cruisers and africa, you take a big risk putting your faith in anything else.

Having just completed a Safari in one of these with over 400km on the clock, couldn't agree more. The only car you see on the Tanzanian trails for a reason!
Agreed Chris! My '16 LC200 also happens to be the "best" car I've ever owned. And while I haven't owned as many as you, I've owned (too) many. The Land Cruiser is built like a tank, is ultra-reliable, it's comfortable and reasonably luxurious. And certainly highly capable.
Mine is the 5.7L V8 which I always assumed was the same 5.7L V8 in other Toyotas - Sequoia, Tundra etc. A side-by-side comparison by a youtuber revealed the LC engine is different. Built with harder and more durable plastics, larger and more solid reservoirs, etc. Point is: the Land Cruiser is simply "built differently". In a very good way!
One of the only cars I ever sold as a used car salesman in Johannesburg that had over 350 000km`s on the clock and sold for R50 000.00 over retail book value...the minute we advertised it for sale the phone started ringing and didn`t stop for over a week after it sold...
P.S : You have very fine taste in dogs too Chris, English Bull Terriers are the best breed ever!!!

Is that a (u.s.a. here) bull terrier? My youngest brother had one of these with that straight snout but his was white with a black circle around his eye. Was the most good natured, loving dog I've ever been around and would excitedly run and constantly spring up in the air like a deer on caffeine😄 little guy just died at 12-13 years old and my other brother buried him on their tree covered 5 acre property where he spent the last 7 years.
Edit- yeah it is. Aka the ole US Spuds MacKenzie mascot and my brother's dog looked identical.

This is a really good tribute to a car whose real beauty is hidden underneath....The breadth of its abilities, the ownership experience, the static engineering and the real-world dependability of the 200 Series silently screams "SOD OFF" to every proponent of its (non-existent) competitors!!!

My neighbor has this car and they have had it for over 20 years and they swear by it for its comfort and capability, they drive to Turkey on a regular basis. It's tough and an enjoyable ride. I agree with you far superior to most high end SUV's
Love the way he keeps the reviews very different every one’s doing hi end cars as a review nobody keeps it real the message is you don’t need to spend thousands to make you self happy anybody can have a nice new car, these days it’s not like it was when l was at school cars are not as special as they once was on the road and everyone is getting in to debt for something they can’t afford and doesn’t really make them truly happy because if it did they would keep it for ever and remember it or keep it until you really needed a new car l
Love to see a top gear show or a car show on older cars cars that was out of your price range but now in arms reach l think that’s what we need as times are getting harder also it saves the planet keep the reviews coming 👏🏾👍🏾👊🏽

I had an Landcruiser 80 series and I also have an amusing anecdote.
Around 12years ago I took said Landcruiser towing a Toyota Supra on a trailer to a track day.
My mate towed his Subaru on a trailer with his Volvo XC90.
It’s been long enough now, so I will reveal that we stayed at Brands Hatch Place Hotel just up the road from the circuit.
There’s not much parking there for long vehicles, so we were pointed in the direction of a wooded area adjacent a large lawn. It was winter and the ground was wet. I think you have a idea where I’m going with this.
My mate in his infinite wisdom, decides to drive onto the lawn and turn around with his Volvo and trailer. It’s going ok until he turns and the struggle for traction begins. He ends up more or less facing the right way to drive but is up to his axles by now. Going no where. Properly sunk.
He cries for help and asks if we should unhitch the Landcruiser to tow him out. To which I laugh and back up to the front of his car with trailer attached. Didn’t have a tow rope to used a 3” trailer ratchet strap and hooked it to the back of my trailer and then to his towing eye.
I had BF Goodrich All terrain tyres, which helped compared to his road tyres.
Any way, in case you’re not aware the Landcruiser 80 series has not only a centre locking diff, also a rear locking diff AND a front locking diff. So I put it in low box and locked the diffs up and pulled his Volvo with trailer attached and Subaru loaded on it, out with my my Landcruiser with trailer attached and supra loaded on it.
Just came straight out. Was in the region of 9 ton trainer weight.
It was an astounding car and I rue the day I parted with it.
Just as I'm moving to Shetland and already thinking of buying one of these, old Chrisy boy nails it for me.. I'd watch 2 hours of this !!

I have a 2013 Land Cruiser with the 5.7l V8. i take it off-road on the beach for 2 weeks each year. I've taken it off-road in the mountains in CO. It is a superb vehicle with impressive off-road abilities.
Being a car nut I used to be hung up on performance when I was younger. Being well travelled, and seeing these things go about their business in terrain beyond comprehension gains you an extra special love for Toyota. 💪 Great video.

Have a mate in NZ that put one on its roof in a lake completely submerged. 24 hours later, it was rescued, fluids drained, etc, and he's still using it. Everything still works, and that was in 2008. Got my father one in 2006, and he still says it's the best car he's ever owned. Towed his caravan 21 miles before realising the caravans brakes were still on. I'm not talking about a modern caravan but an old one that tipped the scales at close to 2 tons. Didn't even notice, though caravan needed new tyres and rims.
My grandpa owns an old Land Cruiser, and it is honestly one of the nicest cars to drive in. So when I heard that it is getting discontinued, I got a bit sad.
I’m an European living in west Africa, and I can confirm these are the must have cars, the premium luxury vehicle everyone aspires to have at some point in their lives.
Can’t beat Toyota and the Land Cruiser in terms of build quality and reliability. It’s a top top car.
In Australia the LC200 and all the other models of LC are king and for a reason. I have one of the first 200's that came to Australia, 2007 Sahara, similar to yours except no seat heating - it doesn't get cold here at least in WA. But you are absolutely correct, they are an immensely capable vehicle, and put most others to shame in going through the rough and tough. Yes they love to drink, but hey in Australia which is a huge place as compared to the UK, then you do what you have to do in order to get around. I love the simplicity of the vehicle and its virtually 'bullet proof' performance and reliability! I've said to my wife, I have no desire to get another car for the purpose that I use this one. Good review. 👍
An LC200 is one of my dream cars, too bad the current price of LCs in Australia has priced me well out of the market

@@fastlion6553 with my 200 I get around 15-16 litres/100 kms around town, 13-14 litres on the open road or highway and when I’m on the boggy tracks in the bush or the beach then I can expect to get anywhere from 18-24 litres/100 kilometres. Like any situation the variables change depending on the road conditions, tyre pressures and how much gear you are carrying. The beaches down here in the great southern and south west are pretty soft so you have to be prepared to go through the fuel.

Love the last v8 gen of land cruises. They look timeless, bullet proof and to me rides like a rolls Royce even though I’ve never been in a rolls Royce
I really understand your love and appreciation for your car. I own a Pajero 2800 intercooler turbo, a BMW 520 F10, a SEAT IBIZA GTI 16v group A rally car and a Toyota Yaris. By far my Pajero is my favorite car (and I know is not as good as a Toyota). 25 years and 222,258 miles after, I still love it and enjoy it every day as my daily drive and as a family car...
Reliable as hell, I used it as my recce car for Cyprus Rally twice, 2010 & 2011 (meaning, it did the whole rally 6 times) and then it was my service car. I tow my trolley with the rally car to all the events. Still standing strong. Respect!
The name of the car is the most true title of any vehicle. If you or I wanted to set off, say from London, to the Gobi desert in our LC, all we would need is our passports, access to fuel and access to supplies and it would get us there. It really is special, it really is a Land Cruiser.
They are the GOD TIER vehicles down under in Australia... they can cross the country without fail in comfort no matter what. awesome video.
Someone who likes cars reviews the flashiest new Ferrari (not that Harris doesn’t do this very well) but people who really love them as machines just GET this. Brilliant vid!
Buying that Land Cruiser was one of the best decisions in my life. I wouldn't add nor subtract anything more from what has been said about this car. It's simply the best, oldschool and long lasting vehicle one can get in the whole car engineering history. And to tell the truth - they don't make this kind of cars any more. It's a partner in everything for life.
These are the Chris Harris videos I was unknowingly waiting for. Never watched him on Top Gear as it died for me when the real trio left but Chris is so good just on his own.
Australia and Africa love the Land Cruiser.. No nonsense vehicles. Just pure awesomeness
Perfectly done, Chris. It is *not* an SUV, it's a pukka 4WD off-roader with a lot of creature comforts built to industrial standards. If want something that makes an impression at a swanky event, get a Range Rover: if you want something that will muck in and get on with it, get a Toyo LandCruiser.

I have what I like to think is a baby Land Cruiser - a 12 year old Rav4 - beefy and sturdy. Frankly I don't see too much difference in my impressions and my feelings - built to last and built to perform. Love it! But having said that - this is the puppy I would love to have when my car grows up!! I work extensively in the Arabian gulf, and the countries there are just oozing with these puppies, and performing with astonishing reliability.

We need a full length adventure out in this thing Chris. Remember its not just this one, its generations of Landcruiser's before it that brought us here, All brilliant in their own way when released. Had an 80 series until recently and was started to show some age after THIRTY years. Moved on to the 200 as soon as I heard they were dropping the V8 and the Tailgate. Impresses me every day I drive it. 3 kids 1 wife and half the house in the back for trips away, no worries, There and Back again.
I would like to get a 200 series but i don't want to down grade from a 80 series lol

I bought a new 2021 Land Cruiser to tow my caravan which it did admirably for a 13 month trip around Australia. I have sold the caravan now but there's no way I'm selling my LC. I love this car. Comfort plus and probably as reliable as any car on the market today.
I have a 2013 URJ200 (US V8 gas version) in New England. Chris is spot on with his review. It just proceeds... anywhere, even towing our 2 ton travel trailer. A personal bonus is it that it doesn't stand out. There are so few of them that one really knows what it is. But the ones who know... they know. I plan to keep it forever.

More videos of this please! I just bought a 200 series here in the States and catching up on various maintenance. I have already fallen in love and have completely forgotten about my 100 series I just parted with.
I'd still say this is an underrated car. Love the LC, it's incredible! Even more tempted to get one now!

I also traded in my G550 for a Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser is far more comfortable, quiet, and reliable vehicle. I took a 3,500 mile road trip in it about a year ago and it didn't skip a beat. I put BF Goodrich KO2 tires on it and it can go pretty much anywhere now.
It's a living legend. I had on for fourteen years on issues at all, ages like fine wine.
I drive a 1991 Land Cruiser. It had been badly abused by previous owners, towing, salt water dips, poor maintenance, bolts missing, you name it, they tried to kill it.
I have taken care of it for ten years and it is by a very long way, the best vehicle I have ever owned.
Chris, we need more journalists to do reviews like this, not about new cars, but older ones, maybe ones weve forgotten about, ones that revive memories for people. Excellent

I’ve got an 04 Lexus GX in the garage and I feel the same way about it. The GX isn’t as posh as the LC but it shares a lot of the same ideas and hardware under the skin. There’s something very compelling about them and I still enjoy cruising around in it all these years later.

Once you go Land Cruiser 100 or 200 it is hard to sit in anything else and enjoy it. Everything else pales by comparison. I have owned 2 Land Cruiser 100 1HD-FTE’s and a LX570. I regret selling each of them.
I now drive a Prado 150 V6 and think about my “Proper” Land Cruisers every time I drive the Prado.
The 1HD-FTE 4.2 inline 6 turbo diesel is built on another level in terms of durability. Built in a hermetically sealed factory, single pulley on the entire accessory belt drive system, dual belts on the alternator, the service manual suggests using a wire brush for cleaning the injectors. They can also make 500kw and over 1000nm when tuned.

Great video Chris. I'm a Toyota fan. I've had since 1989 1 corolla 4wd est and 8 Rav4s since 1995 now driving a 2019 rav4 hybrid. When Toyota had Club Toyota I went on a Landcruiser off road course with Motor Safari in Wales. A fabulous day learning all the off road skills. I completely agree with this review, a fabulous vehicle.

Just bought a 2010 petrol 200 series! The most complete car ever made. Sports cars aside, it is the answer to every question here in Australia.
"A land rover will get you there.
A Landcruiser will get you there and home again".
They are talking about the Defender and 70 series.
But the 200 series is still very reliable but much more comfortable.
