- Today I'm back on HOI4 playing a nation I haven't tried in years. Czechoslovakia in Hearts of Iron 4 appears utterly ridiculous. Can we survive against the might of the nations around us?

Bylo by fajn kdyby Alex někdy natočil Československo z nějakého módu třeba v Road to 56 je luxusní československý focus tree. Kde jednak můžeš lépe pořešit problémy s manpowerem, můžeš získat core na Silesii a je tam plno Focusů s historickými referencemi. Přál bych si kdyby nějaký takový byl i focus tree ve vanile.

Slovakia is basically a lost cause - there's not much you lose there tho. So turtling in Bohemia/Moravia is the way

@@Gustav_Kuriga It makes sense if you just sit there and wait to be invaded, yeah. My strategy was to, eh, "incorporate" Hungary and forge diplomatic ties with Poland, Romania, Yugoslavia etc. Poland is actually very strong, but they need help to avoid being overwhelmed with the initial German attack (Königsberg is really painful) - which you can do if you play your cards right and Poland asks for invitation to the Entente. What's a bit annoying is that it makes the Allies properly join the war far later - but at the same time, they're in a position to absolutely steamroll everything when they finally do.
The main problem is the manpower, of course. You can break German lines with a bit of finesse and take loads of territory, but the manpower cost makes it that much harder to stand against the Soviet onslaught. On the other hand, taking that sweet German territory helps quite a bit in the long run...

When Mussolini is couped, the resulting opposition government is always a puppet of the nation that is invading Italy. Since you were taking territory in the north east of Italy, which caused the balance of power shift, you gained the resulting opposing government as a puppet.

As a Czech, this video pleases me. You've retaken most of Silesia and Lusatia (lands taken away from us by germans centuries ago) and even gained parts of Saxony, it's a great way of making fans of the czech history happy lol

FYI, the reason you got Italy is because after BBA the country that capitulates Italy gets the new republic that pops out as a puppet.

This nation is much easier to play after like 5 dlcs I remember playing it after waking thr tiger came out and you had to train 1 horse battalion divisions and convert them into infantry just to hold
You can still do that. It's the most effective thing how to train large army very fast.

Hey Alex, nice video! As a Czech i already tried to hold as Czechoslovakia against The Third Reich but i failed every time. Maybe bcs i want to form Little Entente and for that you need a lot of national focuses before war start however after your video i will try to go to hold as Czechoslovakia and sacrifice some Slovakia and eventually join Allies.
Little fact i want to write about our Generals. They got so good stats bcs they all fights in WW1 and later against Central powers on both fronts. A lot of them were a part of the Czech Legions which fights on east front and even against Bolsheviks. They had to fought whole way trough Russia to Vladivostok to return to our homelands bcs they were not allowed to go back trough Romania i guess. In one time Czech Legionaires control whole Trans-Siberian Railway. Pretty awesome and i am proud of that. Unlucky the Soviets destroy everything here in Czechoslovakia after WW2 and yr 48 when Communist won the elections. That was also the reason why Skoda was so shit. In the interwar times Skoda cars, Tatra Cars etc was perfect for their time.

About the italy. If a cilvil war happens then the nation that occupies its cores will get italy as a puppet after the war. Its that balance of power mechanic.

@@Damzum Not really, because after war we were a bit of assholes ourselves and moved almost all germans to Germany. Sudetenland is now one of the poorest parts of our country...

Before I even go into this I have played a game where was at war with the Soviets and Germans on Normal and because of those pretty busted fort focus tree I can almost guarantee with enough defense based infantry and a proper backline so troops don't get pushed you will only lose maybe a couple of tiles before they run out of steam.

One thing, Škoda Plzeň is a different company than Škoda auto. Škoda Plzeň was making tanks, mortars and trains and now they make trams and buses.

Its a bit easier if you let poland fall so the allies dont have to fight the soviets. You should probbaly add flame tanks to your turtle units because you can add extra entrechment.

I did play Czechoslovakia a few days ago in singleplayer and honestly took a different route then you. I started with forming Antante and killing Hungary (annex) and Bulgaria (puppet). When Germans attacked, I pulled in Romania and together with forts and their army held off for quite a long time. Then Italy joined and curb stumped both Yugoslavia and Romania and I sacrificed my Hungarian lands and puppet but with the exile mechanic I had Romanian, Yugoslavian and Polish (Poland later joined Antante and fell to Germans) armies all to defend my country. Then it was simple wait game for Soviets and later pushing towards Berlin.

I found maybe even better to play as democratic Czechoslovakia, but it heavily depends on AI's behaviour. Start with strategic decisions and politicial direction (with the PP these focuses give you go for partial mob and limited conscription), then take democratic bastion. This will grant you stable increase of democratic support, which is relevant later in the game. After these three focuses, take the middle industry branch all the way down to united population, which takes away that terrible stability debuff. In mid 1937 you should start working on fortification studies focuses all the way down to lvl 7 forts. If you took the democratic bastion in the beginning of the game, you should be able to take beacon of liberty focus (only 14-day focus), that grants you pretty good buffs for defense game and defensive preparations focus (which gives extensive conscription for free) before Germans demand Sudetenland. When Germans declare on you, 2 9-1 armies with engineer, artillery and anti-air support should cover your border easily (just create a fake deficit and ask Soviets, French and Romanians for lend lease, they'll be more than happy to send you equipment). In fact Germans almost never attack you if you have lvl 7 forts all over your borders, just don't forget to build at least lvl 3 forts in Zaolzie. After that just focus on building lvl. 3 forts on borders with Hungary and Poland; once the forts are finished, take hungarian line and polish line focuses, which will improve your forts up to lvl 5-6. In the meantime, build 2 new armies - one for polish border, one for hungarian (again, lend lease should help you). Once WW 2 officialy begins, join Allies and wait for your time to strike. The forts on your border guarantees that even if Poland falls or Hungary joins WW2, they'll not attack you and if they do, you should hold pretty easily. + you don't have to retreat from Slovakia and Ruthenia. The other side of the czech playtrough in general is that game acts pretty unpredictable, I've been playing democratic CZ quite often, because I'm Czech and every time there's a different outcome 😀In the moment when USSR declare on still-existing Poland in early 1940, you know you have a very long game before you. For industry: build civilian factories until mid/end 37, then switch to military ones. In late game you should be able to build pretty strong airforce, which always helps. I usually go for grand battleplan doctrine, but I also managed to win with superior firepower.

I also like strategy to take Hungary and Bulgaria through "Entente of our own" which gives you lot of aluminium to build airforce and it allows you to build shorter fortification on Austria-Hungary border than all south Slovakia.
I am Czech and I played democratic Czechoslovakia since DoD. Out of 1600 hours in HoI4, I spent 1000 playing Czechoslovakia (pre and post DoD). I find it the ultimate nation to play. Playing any other nation, including new Ethiopia feels like cheating lol.
I hate the military/air focus tree, it is not only obsolete (CAS focus vs TacBomber? Neither exist anymore in tech tree) but massive time wasters for a nation that can't afford to waste time at all and has to be timed perfectly. Once Germany justifies, that's it. You're done.
But the 14 day focus is just *chef's kiss* to this day the best focus in the game.
I genuinely found static AA, radars, support AA's and 300 fighters on interception to be the key to outturtle Germans. You need 72 18 width divisions (Germans won't cycle charge 20+) and that is a big ordeal. You need engies. And you need to build up Hungarian and Polish lines too. You need rafineries for your planes. Essentially from day 1 you need to know what to do and you need to stick with it. Once US joins, you won.
Fellow Czech here, and my tactic is to pre-emptivelly puppet Hungary and Bulgaria. Together with Romania and Yugoslavia I never had an issue.

If you don't have the ability to build an air force to hold your air spaces, build anti-air. CAS is king in this game.

Czechoslovakia has great "historical" defensive focus tree. But lacks any alt history, it should have an Austria-Hungary Focus path like Hungary has imo (it has decision for it so why it doesnt have any focus for it aswell?)
it is not great at all... I mean if you make a whole focus tree you will be able to squeeze like 500 000 manpower at most while Czechoslovakia had over 1 250 000 + something over 100 000 reservists and could theoretically get a bit more. the same goes with equipment... no matter how well you play you wouldn't be able to get even close to the numbers they had in 1938. it was by estimated 8 strongest economies in the world (by hoi 4 logic 7 or 8 strongest economies are majors so it theoretically should be major in the game but again the numbers are very different as you have "only 25 factories" while Poland whose economy was vastly inferior in-game have a lot more factories... Czechoslovakia tanks were one of best in the world in 1938 but yet again they are quite weak in the game... this kind of stuff is supposed to be in a focus tree so that you can get numbers that they really had but paradox rather just put in random numbers that players might like to see. that's also why Czechoslovakia should have a focus tree -> in 1938 the army was nearly as big as german and was overall better equipped therefore if they decline Munich or did some other minor difference in political decisions it would shift WW2 way more than most other events as it was in a time when Germany wasn't such powerhouse yet as they didn't annex whole Europe.
