Since my Multiair Unit caused misfires on cylinder 3 and 4, it was about time to replace it. Probably could have prevented this repair by using the correct oil recommended by the brand itself.

DO NOT change multi air unit without using the specialist tool. You stand a VERY high chance of bending the valves in the cylinder head. Then it will cost more money to put right
In what case would a valve bend? I am really curious because I wanted to get the tool but a local Alfa shop recommended to try carefully without
@@itsaboutcarsyt
If you dont get the buttons underneath the multiair unit perfectly in line with the tops of the valves in the head. If you push it down on a slight angle, the “buttons” can push past the valve stems and operate scraping down the side if the valve stem. I have learnt this the hard way😫😫. The tool takes the pressure of the valve springs so the unit can be sat perfectly flat to the head without any force to push it past the cam.
@@Dering79 so you mean the little pushers on the downside? Those seemed to be so light. Never imagined they could provide pressure to the valves without the engine running. The Alfa shop recommended me to just go very easy on the multiair, not pushing it but screwing it in as even as possible. I guess the best way is to lend the tool somewhere to be safe
@@itsaboutcarsyt
Because the multiair unit doesnt need timing up, those springs are tight against the third lobe of the cam shaft.
They are light with no oil in them. It is when you fill the unit with oil and run the engine that the damage happens. And if you dont take the pressure of the springs you cant guarantee they are lined up with the valve stems. Because those little “pushers” are in essence a small hydraulic cylinder. Which if not seated correctly will just rub up and down the valve stem. Fluid cant be compressed so they just bend the valve then it is a full head off job to replace any bent valves.
@@Dering79 that's good information thank you. I was either lucky or you were extremely unlucky back then... Hopefully the viewers will read this and decide what to do for themselves
Very nice exploration and information(it's a especial tool to install it,that help to keep the spring tension till you center the unit to avoid damage to your bolts,$220 dlls kit, engine actuator compressor PQY..
Man. I waited for you to post new content for months. Thank God you are back. Please make content, I'm here to support ya.
Thanks bro!
Great Job!!!! Applause from Italy.
good job bro. i guess I've been super lucky i use castrol oil in mine with no problems so far and i have to admit ive never replaced my multi air filter, my milage is over 100k... think i will do that as my next task. but i do service the car myself and regularly so i have been lucky. also thank you for revealing where that oil leak from the crankshaft vent is coming from.
As always quality content bro keep it up :)
Thanks mate, really helpful detailed video on this operation.
Many thank for sharing I like to do mechanic job by myself and I follow your videos becouse are very good tutorial
Y’et another fine video 👍🏼
Real work ..real experience...
Did a great job, thanks.
Bold work. I’m officially gonna use the manual from now on for my torque figs.
Where do you get the manual I am looking for years now
The manual I have says 22 N.m (16 ft. lbs.) for the multiair bolts.
Great video mate, looks like i could do that myself if i ever need to. tought it was a lot harder😅
Yeah just don't rip your thread off lol🥲
Need to see the multiair teardown!
Nice!!
Hey man... Great content... A few of your vids actually helped a lot... However I'm hearing a ticking like noise, how do I know if it could be my multiair unit? There is no check engine light appearing.

Nice video 👍
In my QV I only put selenia oil!
It's very important in cars that use this multiair technology
with the selenia I risked losing the module, after replacing it with the motul xclean the machine had no more problems. with low temperatures the selenia becomes too dense
@@fabiosini848 a few months ago, I talked to a guy who is an mechanical engineering at Alfa Romeo, and he was very clear when it comes to Selenia oil has Alfa recommend
But I respect your opinion
Since you have the car, have vou had any problem using the selenia?
@@gowap97 first cold ignition some cylinders did not work, selenia with 8000km. replaced with the motul I no longer had problems with misfiring.
@@fabiosini848 like the revs go up and down when it's cold?
Thats been happening to me
Just when it's cold in the first start
@@gowap97 the engine rumbles and dies? it happened to me in the morning at the first start. with motul xclean i solved it being less dense
You should always screw bolts in from the centre working out from centre to get equal pressure across the unit /head
Yes that's why I torqued the screws down from the centre to the outside
Parabéns, me ajudou
Is an aftermarket replacement system, utilizing remote oil sending and a BIG oil filter, maybe an oil cooler, available ???
Just going to leave this here even though it's an old video, but after replacing the unit you should calibrate it using special software, like multiecuscan.
Nobody seems to mention this, but you should actually do that after an oil change as well.
Could you please supply oil spec as indicated in the video
hello can you tell me wher the oil comes out to feed the cam ive done my head gasket and now have zero oil coming to top of engine but it is pumping strong to top of turbo i think its failing to start as the multiair unit isnt primed ????
Hi i have a punto 1.4 16v turbo.and a ratling noise.kan it be the multiair unit.i was thingking that my.pistonrod berings war gon.and i fixst them.but the noise is stil ther
Hi!
Having cylinder misfires more and more often (P0300, P0301) and now the P1062 code is constant, can't use the DNA switch also. That's gonna be a multiair issue right?
Very nice and concise
can you please provide the crank ventilator gasket part number number
And also part number for the rocker cover bolts?
I've unfortunately snapped mines and need to get it out of there
Hey, sorry for the late reply. If you couldn't find it so far: here's a link to the website where I usually find out about part numbers alfa-romeo.7zap.com/de/mit/qz/145q36101000-010/101/1+10101-030+2-0/
However, the OE Number for the Crank ventilation gasket is: 14457880
The cover bolts: 55199486
hello ! do you know if the damaged previous multi unit it was first generation ?
Tightining up the multi air filter that hard is one of the reasons to damage your multi air unit simply..it just need to be tightened gently with a specific torque turns
Can you help me with the torque specs for the camshaft carier and camshaft bolts inti the camshaft carier?
Mit wieviel Newtonmeter hast du die Schrauben angezogen bis zum abreißen. Und mit wieviel hast du sie dann danach angezogen?
War die Dichtmasse ? Lg
There is an oil prefill hole just near the dipstick
hey, sehr cooles video :)
According to the workshop manual the multiair unit must be torqued down with 22nm, and cam cover with 9nm.
Where can i find the workshop manual ?
Guys, so what's is the exact number of torque for the multi air and the cam cover ?
@@juliangarcia1515 it’s in my comment. Multiair unit 22nm and cam cover 9nm
@@danielvanachterbergh8103 thanks man, can You please share the workshop manual or at least a screen shot ?
im looking for the multi air need to replace mine
Why did you have to change the multiair, did you have a misfire code ?
For some reason I often see the turbocharged MultiAir units failing, no idea why. The NA MultiAir unit I have in my MiTo has been working for 11 years and hasn't even used Selenia all the time (Q8 5W30 C3 since the last few years) and it runs fine.
Maybe the pressure chambers are affected by the additional power due to the turbo. I can't tell what the problem is so far, since I haven't opened it and others do run other oils with no issues.
An official statement would be great but since this engine is quite old I don't think we'll get that
Did you know that there is a turbo oil strainer filter, the white plastic mesh insert gets burned or disolved since it is no longer around (happens to several people including myself). When ordering a replacement, the white mesh is there and fully visible. I wonder if that dissolved plastic is able to somehow get into the multiair? The multiair oil strainer filter has a similar mesh, it does not dissolve or burn of. Maybe the oil temperature is temporarily higher on top of the turbo.
Hi there, did u used something to block cam through this operation? (Like when you change timing belt). Thanks for this video 😇
No nothing actually :)
@@itsaboutcarsyt thank you so much, I would like to do the same operation on my giulietta 1.4 170hp.

Good job bro ! Same engine with giulietta 1.4 tb right..your gbox is manual or tct?
Thnx!

I am writing from Hungary, using Google Translate! The car throws error codes P0302-98, P0300-98, apparently 3 cylinders are firing. I changed transformers, candles were changed. I dismantled the 3rd transformer wire as much as possible, there is no break. Multiair error?
27 N-m is the torque spec on the multiair filter.
what year is yours? mine is from 2010 and the same problem, they say that since 2012 they have modified it and it won't break now I have to replace it too an important expense for a small car that the FIAT of my country that is Italy has made a bad impression on us in the world ! thanks for the tutorial
it's a mid 2012 model so can't really tell which variant it is, maybe it's one of the last "broken" versions haha
What can cause that?
How did you loosen the shield of the vaccum pump? It has 5 bolts, but the lower bolt on the front side is really difficult to reach... did you undo the big hose?
There is a detailed video about removing the valve cover on my channel where I do this, yes I removed the big one
@@itsaboutcarsyt Hi I only found this clip but the bracket had already been removed at this stage. ua-cam.com/users/clipUgw238JjewfVDR8byr54AaABCQ
@@SuperZardo Nono that's the wrong one, I am talking about this ua-cam.com/video/ovWshJWA1X4/v-deo.html
Hi, my new multiair unit is in. Actually, it's nine RIBE M8 bolts and the torque setting seems to be 20 - 25 NM. This would explain why your bolts did break. I reused mine.
@@SuperZardo yes, the tourqe spec I got was highly wrong. Glad yours went in in one shot 👌🏼
How did you get round problem of stripping thread or did you snap the bolt, ive stripped thread on 2 and don't know what route to take to rectify it
Had to drill the thread out and cut a standard M8 thread in it
@@itsaboutcarsyt what are standard threads then?
what oil Brand you are using, could you please give me the name? I have a fiat with the same engine and I us ligui moli full synthetic 5w 30 . I'm always trying to get the best engine juice for this engine. Now what grad are you using and are you using full synthetic
Sellenia....
The reason Selenia is recommended is because of a commercial arrangement between Petronas and Alfa. It’s not really special.
The key is keeping the oil clean and using a good quality oil. The Motul was not responsible for the MA failure.
In the US market, they recommend Pennzoil, which is the same as Shell Helix Ultra.
Heard a lot of similar opinions by now. Did exactly what you suggested, am the third owner though. What the reason for MA failures is will forever be a riddle I guess.
@@itsaboutcarsyt It’s no riddle. Poor maintenance results in carbon particles blocking the filter in the head and starving the unit of oil, and carbon particles blocking solenoids in the MA unit..
Some failures are electrical failures of the solenoid, that’s going to happen regardless of maintenance regimes.
Early ones sometimes had a thread fail on the plunger that is activated by the cam. That was a manufacturing issue, solved now and also not a maintenance problem.
If anyone tells you only Selenia, ask them what is special about that product and what failure mode does it protect against and how.
@@itsaboutcarsyt Your engine was not well maintained - the colour of the innards tell the story of far too many kms between oil changes.
You were also not nearly clean enough in your work - should be virtually surgical and especially careful to cover/block off oil supply passages in the head. One tiny little bit of grit in there and your new MA is toast.
@@froggy0162 thanks for the advice
SO TRUE. It’s the same story with Alfa/Fiat/Lancia always! On Punto I changed to TOTAL years ago, and now I use MOTUL on Alfa! No fuss.
How do you know if the multi air unit is bad how are the signs?
The motor misfires badly and you get error codes indicating which cylinders are not working right
does this apply for all MultiAir? As I got Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500L. thank you.
There are different multiair units out there and i cannot say for sure if the process is exactly the same. If you have the 0.9 in the 500L it's a smaller component, but I guess your renegade has the same 1.4 engine as the Mito and therefore the same multiair component
Greetings ... I have a Mito 135hp ... 70000km ... I used that selenia oil and I used to turn on the engine light all the time ... I replaced the micro filler (in which I found a piece of cloth) 😬, cleaned the oil pump sieve and poured Motul oil ... I haven't had a problem for a couple of months, the car is running normally, like new ... the oil needs to be changed at about 8000km and every 30-40000km the oil pump sieve and micro filter need to be cleaned ... and Selenia oil disappointed me how much creates dirt
Yeah I hear lots of stories like this. I guess you can say there is no correct answer to the oil question, it's like a gamble haha.
Never checked the oil pump sieve that's a great idea!
@@itsaboutcarsyt be sure to clean ... you have to remove the crankcase and fix it
Is that the oil feed to the turbo. The bolt on top ??
@@10Rale is that the oil feed on top of the turbo ??
Hi. Can a damaged multiair flood the cylinder with oil? In my car, the second cylinder is flooded with oil, there is a spark before flooding, so the coil is operational and gives a spark. Thank you for the information. :)

Where do you buy your multiair unit? I have the same problem (i think) on my Mito 1.4 MPI Multiair Distinctive and I don’t know where to buy one except the Alfa Romeo dealer

Nice vid! On ua-cam.com/video/E7Tg5VEN7Xk/v-deo.html you say T45 which is torkx, the bolts you show are Ribe bolts. A lot of Fiat / Alfa / Lancia's use them on the engine.

@2:47 Why would you have a failure just because the oil is cheaper? As long it meets the same standards, there shouldn't be a problem, right?
But give me a oil with the full specs other than selenia. The others don’t have the fiat spec well they don’t here in Australia. I’m sticking to the recommendation of selenia KPE
