  • MULTIAIR ENGINE EXPLAINED AND HOW IT WORKS DODGE DART CHRYSLER 200 FIAT 500X JEEP CHEROKEE COMPASS R
We took a Multiair engine apart and we wanted to show you and explain how it works. This is a 2.4 Multiair engine that has been used in Dodge Dart, Chrysler 200, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Renegade, Jeep Compass, and Fiat 500x, Fiat Toro. This is a very complicated engine the way it has been design. The intake valves on each cylinder are independently controlled which makes the engine very complicated.

I have a 2019 Cherokee and I’m impressed with the power of the 2.4! For being only 4 cylinders, my Jeep doesn’t do so bad on the highways at all. I was surprised when I test drove it as I was dead set on getting a 6 cylinder. I’m glad I got this one and save money at the pump.

I've had a MiTo multiair 1.4 135hp for 7 years. Has to be one of the best engines ever made. More than enough power and torque when needed, but can still get well above 50mpg on a long run, sometimes even nearly 60mpg. It's a 2010 car but not even newer mild hybrid engines can match the power and economy of the engine.

Have check the timming and have purge the oil at the check valve but without luck. The oil is new and i see good oil pressure.

Just as happens with hydraulic tappets, the oil within the MultiAir hydraulic system is probably the same oil used when the engine was manufactured. Changing the oil is always important but it's likely the MultiAir oil is there for life.

You need to do some research. The exhaust valves are opened conventionally with normal followers. The inlet valves are opened by hydraulic pistons - you could say they are hydraulic rockers. Oil is pushed in from the single cam lobe with two pistons down the nine opening the valves. Valve lift and duration is controlled by bleeding off hydraulic oil using solenoid valves.

Story time: this engine burns oil from the factory, I forgot about this ,and the engine shut off on me while on the road. I immediately knew I was low on oil. I was on my way to work and got some 5w-30 the lightest weight that the little store had. I had planned on doing an oil change soon so I though it would be light enough to work for a bit. About 120 miles later, and I get a check engine light, and my car ran like crap. I parked it and re started it. Light is still on but the engine runs fine. I plugged my fancy scanner in and I got a p1064 cylinder oil supply solenoid valve stuck. Even 5w-30 is too heavy for this thing. I'll be doing an oil change tomorrow, but I hate the sensitivity of this engine. My 92 trooper didn't care what oil was in it, as long as it had it.

Chrysler products reliability has always been sketchy but since merging with Fiat and using Fiat sourced products it has really gone downhill fast.
Chryslers most complained vehicles are those using Fiat engines and transmission like the Jeep Renegade that is just a Fiat 500 under the skin.
The Multi Air system sounds good on paper but in reality it has been plagued with reliability issues just like Fiats dual clutch automatic transmissions the Renegade and 500 used.
Chrysler's old 2.4 still used in the Journey though not as powerful as the Multi Air has been much more reliable because it has been refined over the years since introduced in the late 90's.
The same can be said for the four speed automatic transmission used in the Journey which was introduced in the late 80's which by the way is NOT a sealed transmission meaning you still have a dip stick to check and refill your transmission fluid from unlike the rest of today's automatic transmissions.
In addition the four speed auto transmission like the 2.4 engine is far less complicated than many new engines/transmissions which means lower maintenance and repair cost.

@@muskepticsometimes9133 yes you are correct the man above is clueless allow me to educate because I have a fiat 500x 2017 (2.4 multiair). If you pushing out 250k vehicles all with a new engine style of course their bound to run into issues with something but most of the engines that had these "issues" were 2016 and before. 2017 an after run flawlessly. 2nd the sealed transmission is sealed for a reason, you see the 9 speed transmissions have transmission fluid that is rated for the life of the vehicle and so long as said transmission is operating as it should there will be no reason to change the fluid.

    Hello my Friend.
What you tell is not interesting to users, because we are not going to design engines like Multiair. And we are not interested in how it works inside there, but given that this engine has a serious design flaw, namely, it does not start after a long stop (more than 2 weeks) despite the operable kinematics of the control of valves by the Multiair module due to oil leakage from the module and the formation of air pockets in it. This disadvantage is exacerbated by the traditionally high oil consumption in this engine and the user can actually miss the critical moment of adding oil to the engine. In my case, this happened, the oil level dropped, when braking or tilting the car through the suction pipe, air got into the oil system (Multiair module hydraulics sistem) from the crankcase and the engine stopped. After topping up the oil, attempts to start the engine were unsuccessful. At the same time, compression and spark in all cylinders disappeared in the engine. The last oil 5W40 change was - 8000 km. back. The filt Multiair module er turned out to be clean, the mileage of the car is 960,000 km., the condition of the engine is good.
    Questions:
    1. How can I bleed the Multiair module and remove air from it?
    2. What is the luMultiair module brication scheme.
    3. Why is there a small ball valve on the , from Multiair module he top under the filler neck? what is its function? Some experts in Utah advise pouring 240-280 ml through it into the Multiair module oil and then try to start the engine againe. I tried topping up, but nothing came of it, because the hole (1 mm) is very small.
    Senserly yours.

You can bleed the multiair unit by putting your foot on the accelerator all the way and turning the key to start, do this several times and it should bleed.
Yes you can also add oil to the small ball nipple under the engine oil filler cap.
If your car has 960.000 km then I would say it's a good designed engine wouldn't you?
