  • TaylorMade released an update on its P700 series of irons for 2023, which includes the 2023 TaylorMade P770 irons. At first glance, there isn't a lot different from the new TaylorMade P770 irons to the old. However, TaylorMade did make some adjustments to the construction, including less offset in the long irons and the new FLTD CG that progressively gets higher in the shorter irons.
In this video, 2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald and Taylor Ledwein test and review the new 2023 TaylorMade P770 irons against the 2020 TaylorMade P770 irons using Trackman technology.

That's the thing with "new" irons. Technology can only advance so much in 3 years. Really the only time I'd personally upgrade to a newer model of the same club is if I wore out my old ones (even then, you can buy single irons to replace the worn ones) or it's been like 6-7 years and there's some new tech worth getting. Great video as always guys!

A lot also depends on one’s usual tendency but also choice of shaft. For example I tried it with five different shafts - two did not perform so well. But while three did, one stood out by far both in terms of consistency (n-s and e-w) and my ability to strike it well. I immediately knew that was the shaft for me and indeed have since switched from my gamer to the p770 2023. Though was not planning that when I started testing the clubs.

I liked these a lot but the srixon zx5/zx7 combo set just felt so nice and the dispersion was too tight to ignore

How strange, when you hit the center of a high tech club, they call it a jumper. And when you get 5 yards less for slightly off center they call it , normal. Then on blades, center hits, called sweet. And off center called, lack of forgiveness.

Not really though. I play the P790s and I hit them quite well about 180 with my 7 iron. From time to time I hit fliers that can carry over 200 yards off the same 7 iron club.

Due to some manufacturing problems I ended up playing last yr with the 2020 version demo clubs and then just ordered the 2023 version. I noticed on the spec sheets that the swing weights are diff btw the two which I think is why I am hitting the new ones better. They feel better balanced to me with a slightly lighter feel. Maybe they are more like my 20 yr old Nike pro combos and I'm just used to this weight more. But I havent seen anyone address the diff swing weight

Since the big difference TM is touting is the progressive weight positioning from short to long iron, doesn’t it make sense to compare the PWs and 4 irons? I’d kinda expect the 7 iron weighting to be the same on both since it’s about middle of the range

I’ve not seen anyone say it’s worth upgrading from the 2020 version, clubs are soo expensive it’s just not worth changing because it looks a little bit nicer

Has anyone ever done a video on how forged grooves wear bs cast grooves? I can’t afford new irons every year so I go with cast. Just wondering.

6:32 I don't feel that there is that much difference in dispersion. You take out the one shot well right with the 2020 model and its dispersion will tighten up considerably. Too bad you did not remove that from the data to verify. Therefore, the conjecture that the new model may have some technical differences making it more forgiving may also just be imagining.

Not to mention the circle for the 2020 model is widely exaggerated. With the exception of the one short shot, I’d say the north and south dispersion is better with the 2020 model.

I have the 2020 770 and mostly they are great.
Downfalls are the occasional hot one and the fact the launch so high… nightmare with punch shots under trees.

    • @danrichter9864
      @danrichter9864 11 місяців тому

I agree hitting punch shots are difficult with them and the high launch. But I like a little higher launch so if the spin isn’t there as much it lands softly. Being able to them lower as well would be nice. Thinking of trying the new T-100-150s.

    Any idea when the new
P 790 comes out? I am assuming it will have the flight technology too. So hopefully a little higher ball flight with a little more spin.
A P790/ 770 combo set would be nice!!

I dont like the idea of the variety of numbers in the 2023 model. I opted for the 2020 because spin is king for me. I dont struggle with any other numbers but spin really so it made more sense for me to use the 2020 model. Flighted cg can get too up in the air for me

I love the performance and feel of this iron but it’s topline, especially in the short irons, is atrocious for a players iron. It makes the 8-PW look very stubby.
Pretty disappointing to hear it’s even worse in the new ones.

Your test is flawed….difference is related to longer irons……you should have tested 3I -5I

    2020 P770 is 1000x better looking than the 2023 model. Newer P770 reminds me of Pac-Man. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️
