*Awesome product! Great quality feel **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it’s light yet extremely sturdy and well built. Will definitely recommend. Already placing a second order!*
Thanks for the video. A couple years ago me and my girlfriend were walking on the beach in the outer banks NC, when some kind of giant trigger fish washed up in the waves, my girlfriend saw it just flopping and started yelling at me to get it. First mistake I made was trying to stick my finger in its mouth like you would with a bass. We decided to keep it, and it was incredibly hard to clean. I've only ever cleaned Trout and bass, but after a long time of trying I did end up with two real nice fillets. It tasted absolutely amazing, i think it's my favorite type of fish now. 🤤🐟
I don't even live anywhere even CLOSE to where I could go out and get one of these fish and I STILL loved this video. Thanks man! I LOVE my Dexter knives too!
Triggers are delicious and worth cleaning.. Easy to catch if you get on top of a school of big ones. I usually let my weight fall to the bottom then reel up about 15 feet and let it sit there. Fresh squid chunks make the best bait imo.
I once caught 2 nice sized trriggerfish on a party boat and a guy caught a super large grouper and said I'll trade you. I had at that point never eaten a trriggerfish only given them away so I quickly made the trade. The captain who was watching said son you've just been punked. That's one of the best tasting fish in the ocean. I've been eating them every since.
Victor, your videos always make me so jealous. Galveston bay is my fishing grounds and it's been continuously polluted by fecal matter and pcbs lately and I'm dying to eat my catch! Your videos do always give me great tips to apply to my fish when I can keep and eat. Thank you! Tight lines my brother!
One of my favorite fish to eat and keep in the aquarium. So weird keeping such a beautiful fish with awesome personality as a pet yet can eat them without second thought when catch them while fishing.
I just catch 3 of them today and took them home. They were kind of oil on the skin once took them out from ice. Tried to fillet the way Victor did. 6 pieces of fillets and just simple fry them with oil. Oh man supprisingly good. The meat turn out firm and goldden. Yum. I knew the reef that holds a school of these. Will come back for more and they are easy to catch😂
You are a superior instructor my friend. I only wish my father had the patience and skill you do when imparting knowledge. I would have done more fishing and cleaning earlier and ruined fewer fish.
Unfortunately he really didn't demonstrate the proper way for this fish. Pierced the stomach while cutting into the skin. Initial entry was in the wrong place.(under dorsal fin). Its a shame that any poser with a camera can mislead uneducated viewers.
1st of all excellent video and I've only seen trigger fish in certain places they're awesome fish I never knew you could eat them that was pretty awesome in your filet was excellently done. Bob Storm !!!
My old man was a butcher and a banquet chef. He swore by Dexter knives. He swore if a person wanted Hinkles, they should buy two if them: one to crap on and one to cover it up with! Anywho, great how to video. You put out good content. If you want to.get out of your element, I could recommend some epic Montana trout destinations.
I use a serrated knife for getting through that skin and a regular filet knife for the rest. That way you don’t dull your filet knife on that tough skin.
In Australia we have a similar fish called a leather jacket. We skin them before filleting. Make a small cut across the tail just through the skin then the skin just peels away really easily
Land Shark, another great tip for filleting any fish is to do each step for both sides, rather than doing one fillet at a time. It’s more time efficient and can lead to better fillets
An easier way to get into them is to use the soft spot behind the pectoral fin. Pop the tip of the knife in there. Put the edge to the sky and slide the knife towards the top of the head 👍
For an easier start, go to the big dorsal fin and poke in there, its the softest part. I also like to turn at the head and to down to the belly cutting up from the inside,it its easier
I was in the seafood business in the Fulton Fish Market NYC for 30 years..... good job. Try trigger fish whole, just gut it and skin it, leave it whole, and then cook it. If you think the fillet tastes good, you have to try it cooking with the bone!!!! 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
America. A great idea! I keep a blade for cutting my son's wrist and ankle tape off after games and practice. I should be a pro on a trigger! It wont yell at me.
Most fish a best cleaned asap. Removing the edible flesh from contact with blood and dark meat generally produces the best taste, whether cooking or raw. Iced/chilled fish will be best for cleaning.
When I've got a big pile of bluegill or porgy, I sit down on my couch and do em right on my coffee table....just get a big pile of newspapers and rags...take my time, watch vids....relax and fillet at the same time lol👍🐟👊
@@bradcondon6632 Mom always split the Bluegills we caught at night on the houseboat, and cooked them on the grill with barbecue sauce for breakfast. The skin and scales were perfect to cook on and when done, the fins and bones just lifted right out! EASY way to eat bream!
Get a dexter eight inch tiger edge serrated knife and you don't have to risk eviscerating yourself on that initial cut. It will save the edge on the six inch knife. A triggerfish is actually one of the easiest fish to clean. You should ask the guy you hire to charter how to get the throats off the trigger. It is a true delicacy.
In between the trigger and the second dorsal fin there is a patch of soft flesh tight to the back bone. If you start your initial cut there rather than forcing it in up by the head you won't risk the knife jumping off their hard skin, and potentially cutting your self.
Do you do guided trips? Looking to take my wife to Florida to do some real fishing for my 30th and it would be awesome to get her on some real fish like you seem to do every time.
Aloha Vik, great fillet job. What we do here in Hawai'i before we fillet we'll make a small starting cut like you did but after that we'll take a linemans pliers or Vise-Grips, and we grab the skin tightly then proceed to peel the skin right off the flesh using the pliers. It's quick and easy. Some local people like to just skin and gut the "Humuhumu" then cook whole either steaming or frying. I personally like to fillet the Humuhumu (who-moo-who-moo) after skinning. I love the firm flesh because it take well to stir-frying. The Japanese love to use what they call "Hagi" in hot pots dropping the thin slices of flesh into a hot pot of flavored broth, great for cold winter nights. Mahalo nui, and keep up the great work.
A buddy of mine used to make me throw them away every single time I would catch them and i would always catch them alot. One day i caught one and i ran out of bait, i fillet them but the meat was so good looking that it made me curious and I wanted to taste the fish. It was surprisingly very flavorful. Guys these things are hidden treasures try them once it will change your opinion about it.
Under the dorsal fin. Someone suggested a roofing hook blade! I can't wait to see how it works. I have one at home. Could use it on many other species if it works.

I gave this as a gift to my wife. She loves using filet knives versus other knives because they are sharp and easy to hold.

Love triggerfish! Always bring in around 20+ of them when we go fishing in Rocky Point

Quite possibly my favorite eating fish. Absolutely delicious.
Good video! I sometimes catch these and agree that the meat is good. Now I see a way to more easily clean/fillet them before cooking. Thanks!
Crazy timing as I just cleaned my first trigger yesterday and was looking on your channel for a how-to video.
Jason Schofield was it good? Trigger is my favorite fish
