And now he's playing with Covet, damn Yvette and David are fortunate to have him :0
Not anymore unfortunately.
Less use of the octapad than the winner. Mixed several styles, had an actual focus on the drums and making some patterns with them, had a nice solo at the end. I'm thinking this guy was the best one of the group.
For sure
After seeing the winning performance, I found this one to be superior. More musical, more variety, and definitely more complex use of the octipad. Very impressive!
yeah but you have to always keep a beat or rhythm throught out ya know and not sound like alot of noise
Cory Koch Not true. I've been in the drum off. Groove is only about 1/4 of the criteria. Story telling is key. I think this guy told a better story.
Cory Koch this fella's grooves were pretty consistent throughout his pad grooves. solid, not overcrowded with distracring fills. this was my favorite of the 3 performances i've seen. i hope he comes back again next year.
kodiak wild Thanks dude! I hope to make it out this far again. Theres some crazy cats out there! Nathan Redmon Thanks for the love! Story telling is where its at!
i agree! Forrest did bomb i was just sayin drumming isnt just making them make sounds.. this guy was excelling! i heard the groove threw out!
I think this guy should have won! He was amazing and I was on the edge and of my seat the whole time
He’s really, really good. I agree with all the comments about his use of the Octapad and all that - except that his programming of it just didn’t sound good - but I think a lot of the guys who won over the period about 6 to 10 years ago, or so, were not always that great at all. On the other hand, some of them, like Aric Improta, were technically superior (at least somewhat) to this guy and composed vastly better and more coherent drum solos. For example, Juan Mendoza’s solo, the guy who won the year Improta participated, was also far better than this one.
Dude that was awesome!!...
People hating on the Octapad but that thing is an industry standard now! Drummer's these days have to learn incorporating and playing with live samples. Tough to do and he did it effortless!
World class musician!
Wow thanks so much for the kind words!!!
Forrest Rice no problem man!
Have a look at our West Regional winner Forrest Rice's performance at the #DrumOff Finals!
I love how you were using the nobs to tune the pads while you were playing! That was sick and so original!!!
I love you Forrest! You're a great mind in our industry, and I hope that becomes more known in due time :) Great conceptual solo my man.
I was at this thing, I thought no doubt in my mind that this was gonna win. He was frickin DJ'ing while he played.
This guy should've won! What a solo!
Forrest Rice absolutely killed it this year! Great job, man! Keep up the good work!
.,
I met this may a couple years ago in Pasadena... Humble hard-working and mad talented... Great job bro...
Musicianship + stage presence = solid performance
awesome name!
WOW from 418 to 438 was very nice and more importantly very different. Brought a tear to me eye. Bravo son
Thats my good friend Forrest!! Dude killed it! So proud of him! :D
Hell yeah!!! Forrest Rice representing my town!!!
so so so so happy hes with covet
This is some tasteful octopad use and skill. Great solo!
So far this guy and Tony Taylor Jr. are the only guys I've seen recently that actually used the pad in a way I liked. All the others were focusing on it way too much. I don't really mind it that much, but if you've got like ten other things to hit with more than one sound application, don't just focus on 8 unchanging notes. This was a great implementation of that. Awesome job!
Thanks man! :)
Forrest rice, we all know the you are the champion, even when they dont gave you the major prize.
Thanks so much :)
I was so close to winning my store final. a tip to anyone who competes in the future: use everything they give you! I was the only one to use the Octo pad the day I played. I was so nervous though that I screwed up 😋 everyone who competed in the store final used the Octo pad afterward
keep rocking, warrior. Peace.
No seriously, this performance is way more dynamic and musical than Shariq Tucker's. What the fuck, judges? This contest is starting to become an exploit for real drumming.
This guy should have won!!! Forrest has a awesome authentic playing style ,which should have let him won. the winner had a old done that seen it before tipe of performance
awesome love love
Wow man! Awessome performance!, good musicality, attitude, chops!.... Everything. One of the best solos i've ever seen on the drum off!.... But... I watched shariq's solo and i dont know what happened to this guy, since juan carlos mendoza's solo this was a really great solo too... Im kind of dissapointed with these judges, what they are looking for?... Forrest has a lot of potential and musicality, he seems to be a really cool guy, i think that the drum off judges maybe should "judge" personality, energy and uniqueness and not only drumming involved...for me THIS SOLO should have won!!
after watching everyone else. this guy was awesome
This guy should have won, hands down. You fucked up Guitar Center drum off judges.
The real winner!
He looks like he's having a great time!
Reece Ryan Smiling is underrated. :)
Very creative!
He looked like he was having a great time on those drums!!!
better luck next year mr Jack Black
Hey Forrest! Great Solo man. Very Musical and entertaining. Nice Chops!
Loved the Miles Davis Kind of Blue reference at 1:56
This guys should've won. He was robbed.
This dude should have won it
Guitar Center OctaPad-Off 2014
idk how I feel about the use of the octopad, almost less of a focus on the drums now.
still a great drummer he is, just commenting on the octapad that eveyone uses today. thanks for the great solo and skills though.
Personally i like this one better than the winner. He manage to balance the use of octapad and the drums imo. No dis!
Fuck, This guy killed it, way better than Tucker´s performance, He used the pad, but still showed variety & technique on the drums, Tucker just straight abused the octapad!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah this was WAY better than the performance that "won" it this year. Good solo, dude. Wish they'd toss those roland pads but I like what you did with it.
very very nice!! Octapod....freakin sweet
un principio genial
4:29 WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is wonderful. It's been a while since I've seen a white dude in these finals. And he owned those brothas with his musicality. Bout time someone did something other than annoying gospel chops and licks. Groove and pocket for days. And he had some nice swing in there too. Oh the irony with this whole thing haha.. Token white guy for the win this time around! HAH!
This guy should've won
wow.
That was nuckin' futs!
Zach Galifianakis - Guitar Center 2014 Drum-Off Finalist
tommy 6oy HAHAHAHAHAAH!!!!!!OMG
Forrest Rice
lol I'm glad you thought it was funny, your solo was my favorite!!
forrest definitely deserve the win more than Shariq tucker. Very dynamc drum solo indeed!
1:33 waaaaaaaaaaaaah
Drum Centre Octapad contest
Just amazing, the song has a name? or it's just improvised?
Bummer :/ they might have actually got it wrong this year by the looks of things.
Ya the token white guy should have won lol. Just a better solo. If anything, they should of had this guy,(Forrest) and Shariq have a drum off at the drum off. I think this solo had more depth and rhythm, and a bit more groove then Shariqs.
I don't know, the drum off is starting to look a lot like the NBA. At least the last couple of years.
So glad he's in covet now.
Drum off has basically become octopad off
He should have won
And NOW look at this guy absolutely KILLING it with his band Covet! ua-cam.com/video/iaBYzjaMCuQ/v-deo.html
he really needed to tune down the second tom, in fact to me thats something that the judges leave as a small trap to the players. I always catch it when I set up for my five minutes.
am I the only one who noticed he looks like streeter from collegehumor?
He didn't win because the judges weren't prepared for the high cymbal gang
Dude that was awesome! You def should have won. You played the octapad like octamad! Made songs with it instead of hitting it random like a tard. Nice Bro!
the only reason he didn't win is because he killed a judge when he threw the drumstick
Imho a full backing track would've been waaay better. Better for the guy playing too.
Forrest Rice What Snare is that?
PDP Maple
I'm gonna be honest I don't know why the pad is always needed.
Just show me your pure drum skill!
I know I'm ridiculously late, but what are you even talking about? lol Try incorporating an octapad into your playing, it quite literally makes drumming considerably more difficult because it adds a whole new layer. Suddenly melody becomes way more important, and it 100% demands limb independence.
Jesus Christ guitar center can you get these toms right??
Am I the only one who thinks that snare sound really "over-cracked"?
Definitely a better performance than the winner... the winner used, in my opinion, too much Octapad. Forrest used it a good bit, but used it well. In the winner's performance, I lost interest after a minute or minute and a half because he used more Octapad than drums, and it kinda just felt like the solo was going nowhere. They probably just wanted another handsome, skinny black guy to win (not saying he's a bad drummer, but Forrest was definitely better)
yes agreed!!!
Honestly don't really like Forrests drumming on the newest Covet album, Technicolor. The reason I state that is simply to show I have zero bias when I say this drum solo was extremely well crafted, the performance of it was flawless. It's quite honestly better than the overwhelming majority of drum solo's I've seen in my life. I saw King Crimson in 2019 and they had 3 drummers going back and forth soling during "Indiscipline", and even with Gavin Harrison there, it was still nowhere near as interesting as this solo.
Круто конечно, даже очень, но всё все финалисты прошлых лет без октопада больше нравились (ИМХО)
There should be a new rule "no octopad" Takes away from the art of drumming
is it just me or are drummers becoming to dependent of the drum machine? something Dave Weckl has spoken about in many videos on soloing and comping..
It's almost hard to watch this, the drums sound absolutely terrible. Drummer is great though, very creative.
He must've pissed off the sound guy.
He looks like Bonham. The toms sound crap. Nice solo.
i don't care much for the octi pad stuff. i wanna see what a drummer can get out of the dreamiest, not some weird electronic stuff
i meant drum set not dreamiest
REALLY sick of all the Octapad BS! Come on!
I can't believe Shariq Tucker won. He has no control or creativity compared to Forrest Rice
drums sound like crap
i think the octapad is too basic. its a one note at a time pony trick that is easy melody...
its not being used to enhance the drum kit, nor the rythym, its just being used to make the drummer look clever. look at me, i can hit one note at a time and play a new counter beat every bar and every note... its old and unoriginal now. so what if you can be a one man band. go look at some street buskers these days... they are great.
dont these pro modern drummers here see the drum kit as a tonal melodic instrument anymore? a good drummer knows, that a drum kit is no more or less than a baby grand piano.
Forrest Rice lebih baik daripada Shariq Tucker
This is why I hate these drum offs. They aren’t drum offs or battles, this isn’t a solo. This is just simple mid shit. This is why the real greats never do this stuff.
ua-cam.com/video/B6nk-pZnvik/v-deo.html
Huh, I guess Dave Grohl got a little heftier.
does a real drummer need a machine to make sound ? I thought that is what the drums are for,
why does the bass drum sound so god awful in all of these videos?
Have a look at our West Regional winner Forrest Rice's performance at the #DrumOff Finals!
Oh my! This guy is incredible. Who said you can't get a full body workout while remaining seated?! 👍
