The most impressive part of this is that fuckin left foot cowbell, I'd like to see Fred do that.
I used to think this was a bad solo when I saw it years ago. then I started listening to more technical metal and other music that use off time signatures and polyrythyms...now I realize that JP Bouvet is a monster when it comes to drums. anyone who says he is not a good drummer or the solo is not good needs to expand their mind and musical knowledge.
Karen Drab right? The octapad vibe solo and then soloing again on the kit all over a 7/8 cowbell clave ostinato with his left foot, keeping it consistent. That is crazy

Haha you gotta love how critical people get - These are probably good reasons on why you are not the judges of a million dollar competition. Please post your videos on how YOU would have; soloed over 5/16, rolls with you right hand and left foot and your 7/8 clave rather than rip someone a new because you can't or wouldn't have done the same. Then leave your comment when we can see you do that. Quite an achievement JP! Keep it up!

I was the 10,000th like for this video, 5 years ago. I've been coming back to this video several times a year for the past 10 years, just to watch the intro (0:01 - 1:23). It's maybe my favorite drum section. Love the dynamics of soft & loud, slow & fast. Very yin-yangy. (Sorry to use such technical terms.) Hope you're well, wherever you are, JP!

Jp you rock man! I love listening to these videos when I'm driving my semi truck! I haven't seen him in a long time, but JPs garage band and my garage band used to play together a lot in High School. They even made a record at my parents house. Watching him progress through those few years was awesome! To see him now living all of our dreams is a real treat! Way to go JP!

People who are complaining that other cats were way better ok maybe your right but technicality only accounts for 20% of your score. What really matters is creativity and originality that alone effects about 60% of your score. All the guys at the competition have amazing chops and catchy grooves and crazy polyrhythms. The judges see that every year time and time again. They're looking for ORIGINALITY something they've never seen a drummer do before. Name one person you've seen play doubles between there left hand and left foot while playing hip hop grooves between there right hand and right foot BEFORE 2011. After seeing all these solos I've realized it's about bringing something NEW to the table it's not about how hard your solo is its about how INNOVATIVE it is. That is why he won!

He doesnt overuse the pad, Granted the drum off is for drumming skill, but he added his own rhythmic section to it, and he kept on time and was able to do all of the changing and playing without messing up and skipping a beat, he was great.
So much emotion put into this... I love it!
I just saw a clinic that he was apart of and this really is just the tip of the iceberg. His odd time signatures, polyrhythms, independent stick control, and fluidity while being perfectly in time is something to desire. I've been playing for a few decades now and was thoroughly impressed.

Dope dope dope. JP is the man. I think just to change things up the next few years they shouldn't allow octopad. You basically have to use it to have a shot these days.

Good point. Agreed as well. Not just because it's a product placement, but because it might push all these awesome drummers even further when you actually limit their tools to percussive instruments exclusively. JP still killed it.

The rack-tom mic is quite close to the skin and at a sub-optimal angle.

I was in the very first one in San Diego 1989 (tied 1st place with George Zolenz), was a participant up til 1996, and then I judged til 2001 in the regional stores. It was amazing to see where the GCDO went; back in 1989 when we won, they took us across the street for pizza and gave us a snare drum! The winner in 2012 took home a lear jet or something? Anyhow, what an interesting solo! And the clave in 7 was a really cool touch.
You're such a great player, first I've heard of you and I'll go check out some of your latter-day work. I tell young drummers who blow my mind "I can't wait to see you in 10 years!"; and through the magic of UA-cam, I get to witness your decade-long progression in about 120 seconds! :D

***** His was great, the best part was how much fun he was having. I think he knew he wouldn't win going into it, because he's not really that style of drummer, but his solo was certainly impressive, and what a drum solo should be.

I hate it when peopple think the faster someone can play, the better. This dude demonstrated many different skills in a short segment. His independence was amazing. He played fast, slow, loud, soft. He can probably play any type of music very well. Very impressive.
Some one who took the phrase "More cow bell!" waaaaaayyy to seriously...But its awesome how he keep the rhythm on that going separate from the bass drum and other drums! Amazing!

As a old guitar player, or a younger one, we have a short attention span when it comes to drummers, JP had me from start to finish! Very unique,, innovative!! Keep an eye on this young man, you will see him very soon! Great job my friend!

Sometimes less is more. The addition of it in the beginning made the start of the solo amazing.
OH LAWD! The independence required to do just about every single section of this solo is ridiculous. That left foot cowbell ostinato? Insane. There is no arguing that JP has some unreal independence. Not to mention chops. Chops everywhere.
People are talking about how this is non technical or musical and I'm wondering what solo they just watched because not only did he do all sorts of time signatures or display great technique, but he also used the Roland pad for a lot of parts too. Some people just need something to complain about.
I thought it was alright. I think some criticisms are pretty justified. He's a great drummer though. I found him through a Helix Martin video.
Elwood Bond Octopad and Roland pad are two different things. Octo (eight) has eight pads while some of the Roland ones have like 4 or 6 (around that area)
flipping the splash off the stand into his hands was just about the slickest thing I've ever seen
The thing i love about JB is he is very capable of shredding on the kit for the whole 5 minutes, but he refrains from doing so do engage the audience that are not drum fanatics. Most people that don't understand drums thing the easiest beats are the hardest. He still manages to be technical as hell when doing what is assumed to be easy by the common population. Well done JB, keep doing your own thing man.

AMAZING. I inspire to be like you. I won Australia's Best Up & Coming Drummer Competition (largest in southern hemisphere) at 14 years old in 2011 and working my way up. I love watching guys like you play and hope to be on that very stage, very soon. Actually, not 'hope'... I WILL be on that stage. Gotta have a positive additude, right?

Anyone who says this guy sucks has NO idea what they're talking about. Not only does he have some of the most incredible hand-foot syncopation I have ever seen in my whole life, his solo was TASTEFUL. Guys, he's playing offbeat sixteenth notes with his left note, a separate bass pattern, and using his hands to play syncopated rhythms on top. If this is because he's using a sampling pad, grow up and read a book. Percussion (i.e. drum) - a musical instrument played by striking with the hand.
he was the 1st winner using the octapad .. and that was cool ... but now it is done to death and It seems you have no chance w/o 90% of your solo being based on the octashit
+Drummer_Jez He also uses the pad very tasteful. Now it is being used more and more as a crutch as opposed to another accessory.

Whether you like the octapad or not is completely meaningless, his skill and creativity outshine any negative opinions someone has. And to anyone who thinks his style of play couldn't function in a band, go look up Dave McKay Group...

If you were cultured, you'd realize how much Bouvet has done subsequent to this performance to prove himself. There's absolutely no reason to question why he is where he is.
If you believe so strongly than Mendoza is better, what's your reasoning? I, for one, found this to be a better solo.
Um, you have no idea what you're talking about. Bouvet is so technically mastered, it is beyond crazy. Bouvet's performance is more of complex rhythms and how he overlaps them over another. To people like you, you'd think it's just some boring and unexciting stuff... but look deeper than just the bare surface, you'll find a lot of sophistication and profoundness in what Bouvet is playing. Seems like you have a lot of studying up to do in drums my friend.
Joshua Strong denimsaint Ok first... You're right.. i don't know what Bouvet had to go through to get there.. very probably neither do you. Every drummer that goes through the finals have years of experience and dedication.. so I'm sure ALL of them had to go through SO much to get there. GC judges base winners on overall performance, originality, technique, stage presence and groove, i know because i was a judge for years. btw.. I've been playing for over 14 years so i would say I'm pretty "cultured". To say his performance is more complex than mendoza.. I'm sorry.. i HIGHLY disagree. Mendoza had much more grooves, technicality, versatility, originality, and just overall performance. Some of the things he pulls i just feel overall took Bouvet.. for example, when he turns the snare over and starts scratching on the snare wires, or throws those salsa and latin beats in there, or throws the michal jackson grooves in there.. I'm sorry but there was NOTHING like that in Bouvets performance. look i respect your guys opinions, but I'm sorry.. i just feel mendoza took that performance by the shit load. In all my years drumming I've never seen anything like it. Bouvet.. sure he can get technical with his speed and rudiments, but lacks originality and groves. And you want to talk about cultured, take another look at mendozas performance and see how many different styles and generas he throws in there. Again.. my opinion.

I agree with the original comment. In all the other drum off champion videos I have seen, it is a musician performing on the stage. When I watch this, I see a drummer. Although it may have been technical, that was really the only positive thing about it. Not saying the rest was negative, but it wasn't that impressive. It didn't really take hold of me like the other performers did. When I watched this, I sat and thought "Cool." When I watch the other champions, I'm really dragged into what they're playing. Their emotions are really being put into making music, while this guy is just playing the shit out of the drums. It's not bad, but just not someone I would have made champion.

How come drummers like these people don't go on Americas Got Talent? I have yet to see any drummers on AGT.....
because they wouldn't win. A lot of people who watch/vote on that likely do not understand what is happening. They will think its all noise and just hitting random things
because those shows are completely rigged. the "winners" are pre-selected. the large number of people that you see on there embarrassing themselves are the ones who move forward in the publicly held auditions, only to be crushed later on. i know this because i auditioned for american idol once and was able to see how everything worked and what a complete joke and waste of time it was.
Good question, but seriously? Musicians do not do talent shows, they work as musicians/artists. Please do not tell me you believe that talent shows show real talent...
And the judges are there to see what person has the most commercial value during a year or two... They are unfortunately nothing more than a 'product'
there was one but a young player with, in my opionon, just some basics.. and all "WOW HE PLAYS SO GOOD" what they say to youths like drummer in the video. But drummers like him play drums on more drummingnessassary competitions^^ I would more prefer play at "drum-off" then "AGT"

Good player. Very young. But the thing with a lot of these cats, as much as I respect their talent, is I'd like to see what they can do in a groove situation and then judge. A lot of guys can chop for days but are completely lost when it comes to holding down a pocket.

he gave a 3 day workshop at our school in The Netherlands and they jammed a lot, multiple groove situations as well. It was astonishing

Amen drumming brother. I teach - no pro by any stretch, but a longtime player. I learned on the set and even as a young teen I was proud of my role as the one who laid down the groove and kept time (I was 18 in 1985 in Los Angeles County when ALL of us were in a "band" back then. I teach, for fun, but with a seriousness and I get them started day one on the kit - but with music behind them to help them understand the groove. They don't need me to show them rudiment after rudiment (I do show I they have applicability to the kit though) and they can work those out at home on their pillow (or whatever they hear about).
Agreed, if you cant write or groove all that technique is a waste... I'll take a drummer who can write over a "show drummer"

how can u say that everything after 3:07 isn't musical? Keeping the 7/4 or 7/8 or whatever time its in on the left foot while improving over it? And then he plays a straight 4/4 beat over the 7/4 or 7/8 clave and that takes extreme independence, skill, chops, and courage lmao. For him to pull that off at a stage like that is unbelievable. I may not know a ton about music or theory or whatever, but I know that this solo isn't only complicated, hard, and for show, its very musical. If you wanna talk so much trash on him then you fuckin go up on guitar center drum off and win like he did. I'm all about structured criticism and new ideas but you just throwin shade for no reason is dumb. And no one really said hes the best drummer ever. You say "show me this kid working this stuff into actual music..." he went to berklee school of music, has workshops around the world, appears on famous drum channels like drumeo and shit, he has his own band, and he won the guitar center drum off. But to some point i agree. A lot of the judging is based on showman ship and just chops but this is entertainment. It's enjoyable to people to watch other people show off their skill. This isnt for a record or an album thats gonna be released or something. It's a competition. Youre so blind to what this actually is. You want only musical solos, dont go looking at the drum off. look at his other shit that he does... Interviews, his band, attend his workshops... The worse thing is that you just throw shade when you can just avoid this all together. All you see is just fast playing, electronics, and the audience. Other people and myself see the dedication, the sacrifice, the time, the genius drummers like JP Bouvet have put in into their craft. No one has to "show you" anything. You just do not know. You want people to show you when you have the youtube search bar right above your stupid ass comment. Please educate yourself and try not to be so ignorant.
They need to take the Octopad out of the Drum-Off. JP is an incredible drummer but I feel the parts that's rely heavily on Octopad are so cheesy.

+Charlie & snoopy If they are too resonant then they're really hard to mix and become muddy. Tipically this is what sound engineers go for. Especially for metal songs. All of them are tuned and miced this way. Hope this helps :)

Great player, TERRIBLE drum sound...
THeres never good drum sounds for these events cause they just use a standard eq/mic setup since every guy changes kits.
I'd say there's probably a rule where they use the same standard mics for all kits for consistency of judging.
