You KNOW that wheel is VALUABLE, when they're willing to sacrifice an original Halibrand magnesium wheel to fix it! That Halibrand was probably worth 500 bucks before they cut it, but that Cobra wheel has gotta be worth ten grand!

You are right, Jamie. Can't be done if you don't know how might be more correct. Thanks for watching and the comment.

How does the heat from the welding not turn the wheel into a giant signal flare? Magnesium burns hotter than gasoline!

I’m not the expert, but from my understanding it’s preheating the metal so the differential is not so much and then just using the right welding technique!

I believe Magnesium only burns in powder or shaving form when oxygen is more easily mixed in.

im one of them really old car guys, just hit 80 this month, i was always under the impression you couldn't weld magnesium also, but i also recognize those wheels and the original cobra had genuine magnesium wheels. i have two very early 15x8 ted halibrand wheels, no windows and two bolt patterns, 4 1/2 and 5 in, no damage but very very need of cleaning, came from thomas bros performance enterprises in san antonio tx in late 70s. he told me not to clean them and to try and sell them the way they are. i can't find anyone that really knows a safe way to clean these, any ideas.

Have you tried Mother's 05101 Mag and Aluminum Polish? Always use caution with real magnesium around power tools because of fire hazard. Also, some suggest a clear lacquer finish once polished to keep them from re-oxidizing quickly.
