The 348 and 409 were basically glorified truck engines and were soon replaced by the Mark IV 396 ci 425hp big block Chevy and the rest is history !
this feature is great for tall people especially with long legs. Wish they still had it.
We had some impeccable engineers in the past things were made to last a lifetime literally
Cool old Italian Mafia car!😮😊
Only one carb has a fuer line going to it
Easy way to measure the bore an stroke with out doing a real tear down...oil pan is harmeless...just a upside down valve cover...an a gasket...yeah the kid didnt know yeah ok....not likely....i heard they were fast in nascar but blew up for lack of a big enuf oil pan ...i heard....Got a race hemi im good
So much here to learn. Thank you for all the comments the information. The stuff we never knew appreciate all that
I only heard the song. But my cousin had a 348. Same weird valve cover. 😊 Such a strange combustion chamber.
I used a soap stone stick, then crawl under the car w/ a recip-saw & cut it off.
That clear top. On that car makes it very valuable.. the mercy was called the Sun valley.. I'm not sure what the Ford was call... You never see those cars anymore.😊
Was at a local carshow and there was a 61 Chevy bubbletop with a 409 and it had edelbrock aluminum heads..I was surprised, I didnt even know they made aftermarket aluminum heads for the 409. Of course they are very rare to see anyway.
Great story! I was born in Terre Haute, lol. That had to be really cool seeing that 409 when it was new.
This guy is a treasure trove of great ideas
👍👍🙏🙏
I believe you have to pull the engine, just to get to the oil pan bolts,,,, so...😶☕
That might be why he was upset, it probably started to be a pretty big deal!
Skinny jeans and man buns need NOT apply.
Back when things were designed to be maintained and repaired by the owner. Today is a sad day for automotive technology. Ill take slow and reliable over fast, "efficient" and "environmentally conscious" every single time.
We put 348 crank in a 396 makes a nice gasser engine.
Excellent! 👍
Saw one a few years ago here in the UK .I took a photo. Off memory it was a coupe colour was bronze golden. Beautiful automobiles.
Some good men here. :)
🙏🙏
427 in a dump truck to
Yes indeed
Correct a dump truck would have a 409 in it
My grandpa said that's how the name Mopar came about. When Chrysler heard the 409 they looked at each other and said we gonna need some mo par😂
🤣🤣
The Mystery Engine 427 looked like a Mark 4 427 Rat Motor and not like a 409. The 427 version of the 409 had a longer stroke and 2 piece aluminum intake. I've seen one in person. Hermon Chapman here in Colorado was restoring one in his shop about 30 years ago. I knew Hermon through the car clubs in Colorado.
Thank you for adding some personally known detail here!
I wonder if he ever raced at the famous us-30 if someone could find that out that would be it's closed down now but I'd still like to know
There’s a good chance he did, I will ask Ed… I’m trying to put together a show to get him talking about his drag racing days with the “sour six” … I know he raced all over the country so that’s a good one to include
He is correct about it on tame, street driven cars. I run a 8-71 on my sbc at 10 lbs boost. It's aggressive and fun for this old man to drive.
Wonderful
Next up maybe ,using Fuller's Earth to redo a leather clutch face.
I had a 430 ci 2 bolt. 400 block that ran mid 8 in a 3000lb mustang
See this is the true American made things that were built too last not. This plan obsolescence.
I am with you on the heart of the matter, but also this car was designed and built in France… 👍
Can this concept be replicated on something a little more modern such as an 88 nissan hardbody with a 5w71c? Ive had this truck for 17 years and replaced 3 clutches. Id love an eternal, no machining necessary setup on this truck that doesnt want to die.
I wish more folks would build up a 472 or 500 Cadillac. Imagine if there were aftermarket blocks available?
I agree!
Very interesting Barry. Definitely a unique design. Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas. 🙏
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too!
Everyone saying this old design is in any way better than the modern clutch is a little crazy. There’s no way that clutch could handle the power of today’s engines, there’s a reason we’ve quit using clutches like that.
You have an interesting comment. I need to learn more about wet clutches, I know they’re still in use today, but I don’t know the details - we can find out!
That was a very unique engine, the bottom end had a smaller journal than the standard big block Chevy the heads had the valve layout like current big block Chevy it had more stroke than the standard 427 , it also had a roller cam from the factory, 12.5:1 pistons, a winters two piece dual carb setup twin Carter AFBs also Holley carb options there were a lot of the popular racers that ran those 63 Impalas that those engines came in , it was called the Z-11 that car was very special it had aluminum fenders and bumpers improved steering geometry among other options Malcom Durham had a entrepreneur who invested in his drag racing program, this guy was a road racing professional enthusiast. He has two Corvettes that were prepared by Malcolm and those engines were dropped into those cars and sent to Europe for Lemans according to Malcolm they were very successful I have yet to look up these two Corvettes from the 63 years of 24 hours of Lemans, that guy helped him to get one of those Z-11 also those engines had aluminum heads like the big block but some variations in the head and block coolant passages, great topic on a awesome engine that was the predecessor to the big block Chevy
Love Ed Smith
Ed hacks!
Always love to learn from Ed!
I will pass that on to Ed!
Wow super cool
The cyl. Head is flat, and the combustion chamber was built into the block on 348s and 409s.
The machines I work on work the same way. Shits ancient
a old buddy of my owned a machine shop he's dead now think one of his boys run the shop now anyway he had alot of 409 an 348 stuff
1963 427 Z11 was the Mystery
My grandfather had one back in the day. I thought it was the coolest car ever.
Ed could bring back any lost car manufactuer. Ed bring back Olds. You are great Ed. If Ed had been in charge of the American auto assoc. It would never have been lost. Damn these cheap foreign im-puts!
Bad paint job on front, overspray and missing pin stripes
You are 💯 percent correct nice ride I would take my old school cars instead of a new $80,000 car any day
Yeah, but man they drank gas ! I had a Caddy with a 500.
Have a 1925 Bentley in the shop Right now..
I think that Dodge motor that he's talking about and he's talking about shimming it is the dual overhead cam Dodge motor where you shim the lifter buckets
Which is the better stock engine, 351 Windsor or the 351 Cleveland ?
Cleveland
@@knucklehead68 Windsor
Totally useless info on how to adjust. Should have shown the entire process to be really helpful. Just a tease.
