Road Riot 4WD on the Lynx (was never released) graphically put the SNES version to shame! Thats insanely impressive for a handheld from 1989! I have the model 1. Just a quick little side note "Atari is still around, but it's a different company" Well, like you said, that doesn't matter. Companies and buildings are not people, even the original Atari wouldn't be the same company today if they hadn't destroyed themselves back in the day. What matters is if the SPIRIT of the original company exists today, and I honestly think it does.
Love the Atari Lynx. I have most of the games. Going for a full set. I have 3. Two model 2s and a model one. The homebrew scene is worth getting into the system alone.
A few years ago I had a couple of my Atari Lynx systems modded with McWill screens. Made playing Lynx games a completely new experience. Now the Analogue Pocket pretty much accomplishes the task for about the same price as sending my Lynx out for McWill mod LOL
This is my favorite hand-held EVER...I remember seeing Child's Play 3 and that little kid (Tyler) was playing Blue Lightening on the Lynx and that's what made me want one! Granted, I had no idea what it was at the time but when I went to KB Toys I saw an Atari Lynx and it came with Blue Lightening and it had screenshots from the game. I knew it looked familiar. I even asked one of the employee's if that was the game that weas played in Child's Play 3 and he confirmed that it was. I had already told my parents I wanted a Game Boy for Christmas and they were fine with that but once I realized that the Lynx is what I really wanted, it took some convincing. The Lynx was double the price of a Game Boy. But my parents told me if that is what I wanted, that would be ALL I got for Christmas that year. So I ended up getting it....then less than a month later, it got stolen at school...(side note: I was only 7 when Child's Play 3 was released. My aunt took me to see the movie in theater. She had no problem with me watching R-rated movies and I had already seen the first two Child's Play movies at her house)
One of my Lynx consoles has a BennVenn screen upgrade (and USB power) and it makes the Lynx live up to the promise of 1989. It is a very comparable screen upgrade. They make upgrade kits for most vintage handhelds. I bought this one already upgraded so the choice of screen wasn't really up to me, but I have absolutely no complaints, other than the lack of VGA out. McWill made the first modern screen upgrade that I was aware of and even more exciting, to me, he also included a VGA out which has since been made optional since many chose not to install it. Originally you had to order the kit directly from him through AtariAge, but now it is available through online retailers.
The lynx commercial was classic with the kids in school asking to go to the bathroom and play 2 player with the cable under the other stall from the other kid
I remember as a wee lad, being enamored with the Lynx after seeing it in a display at Babages. It was something i always thought about, but having to make a choice for a system and getting the Game Gear, i was satisfied with my pick. It's great to see these innovations on old equipment. And even cool to see some Lynx games get put on new collections that i can play on my OLED Switch, like the Atari 50: Anniversary Collection. Thanx for talking about the Lynx Adam! I appreciate the video!
greetings from the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley… hope you had a good trip here. Born in ’84, always wanted one of these as a kid, but just couldn’t afford one. Anyways, great vid Adam!
@@MrNeffect209 That's basically inevitable, it's more a matter of when since my return to there is always pretty random. The best way to keep track of that is my Discord.
I have a Lynx 2, like yourself and around a year or two ago I had mine McWill modded and for tv out. Yes the Lynx can in fack scale and rotate. You maybe thinking of Warbirds or Blue Lightning which are both 3d flight sims. To this day the lynx has the best version of Klax in my opinion with superb voice sampling.
I still own the huge launch version of Atari Lynx, and also the first Gameboy. The only handhelds i bought after those two is a short list... (Lenovo Legion Go, 2023) VITA, 3DS, Switch and 2 x Nokia N-Gage's + (Wii U). The only reason why i bought N-Gage is because it had the highly popular Symbian Series 60 OS which were also used on cell phones from several brands. Everything made for Series 60 phones also worked on N-Gage and there were a great homebrew scene for N-Gage.
I bought mine from McWill himself on Atari Age. Don’t know if he still sells it there though. It wasn’t cheap. I think it was like $150 for it. Definitely a novelty kind of thing.
I always wonder if these colour handhelds (Game Gear, Lync, Nomad, etc) would've been more successful if the companies had the screen tech we do today. The LCD's back then were horrid and blurry and relied on CCFL tubes which sucked batteries dry.
It has amazing scaling and colour but the sound sucked on Lynx ! Bi have a question How many bits was the Lynx ? the Gameboy & Gamegear were 8 bit i think
It’s an 8 bit system, in that it has an 8 bit CPU (65C02), and 8 bit architecture, but it’s also true to say it has 16 bit graphics because it’s custom graphics chip is 16 bit, and incidentally runs 4 times faster than the CPU. The graphics chip has some other functionality. You can palm off some 16 bit integer math to it.
I have the gen 2 in storage. it would drain 6 AAs in just over an hour. Power adaptor wasn't much better. the connector was cheap and would break contact if you moved too much.
Yeah modded handhelds that aren't GameBoy are hard to come by, I wanted an entire arsenal of retro handhelds with modded screens but I'll stick to my IPS GBA.
So basically Nintendo had a blsck & White GameBoy and managed to be more competitve than Lynx? Variety of games? Do you have another video talking about Lynx's games?

why do people tend to like tube tvs over the flat screens? I thought it was better at first but then i tried going back and was like nah something else is wrong lol.
That screen comparison is basically the RTX off/on meme 😅 That's a fantastic improvement!

You know it's something pretty cool if Adam Koralik is talking about a handheld! I have an IPS modded GBA myself and love it.
The lynx does have some pretty good games. I like the sound and graphics, it's unique to the system
I like the way your palm covers the speaker. No more pesky sound!
I mean, I intentionally muted the audio...

I think the BennVenn draws less power than the McWill, so batteries last a bit longer.
Wow and just like that. all the ghosting is gone. Now you have a decent handheld and potentially form of self-defense in the Lynx.

Best version outside the arcade of Xenophobe is on the Lynx. Try it out if you haven't Adam. Thanks for the video!

Atari Lynx screen mod. Always good to see these types of mods to make these hsndheld systems better. Thanks for the video Adam.
Always wanted a Lynx II, but none of the games pushed me enough to seek one out.

The McWill mod is not easy to do. Quite stressful to do.
All the Lynx needs is an HDMI consolizer mod and the backing of Phil, Alastair, and Dan Redfield to publish new games and ports for the platform
Have a game gear with a modern LCD. Epic to play now
Atari time with Adam
Ah yes the lesser known Ecuadorian Butt Lift.
Backlit screen in 1989 is definitely a big deal! Problem is the tech of the era wasn't enough for powerful handhelds.
2-3 hours on stock but the LCD pumps out 5 hours? thats actually REALLY good for how old it is
To my understanding, yes
Impressive!
I wanted a lynx back in the 90's but couldn't afford it.
5:15 I felt that… I think we’re the same age 😅
I bought mine from McWill himself on Atari Age. Don’t know if he still sells it there though. It wasn’t cheap. I think it was like $150 for it. Definitely a novelty kind of thing.
I have the model 2 and it's great that they make replacement screens. However, and in all honesty, I prefer the original screen of the model 2.
Atari lynx is a great habdheld. It seemed overshadowed by ultra popular gameboy

I have a Lynx 1 with the McWill screen. It is fantastic. Literally the only flaw is no brightness settings. So it’s too bright in a dark room
Atari Lynx, Atari Jaguar... why was there never an Atari Cougar ? 😎
It has amazing scaling and colour but the sound sucked on Lynx ! Bi have a question How many bits was the Lynx ? the Gameboy & Gamegear were 8 bit i think
Part of it's charm
The atari lynx was 16 bits also I would be the only true portable with that power until the gameboy advance which would be 32 bit
@@lisabd8906 really i thought the Atari Lynx was 8 bit , looks and sounds 8 bit ! The Turbografx Express had a 8 bit cpu but looked and sounded 16 bit
@@lisabd8906 you forgot Turboexpress was way better !! it had StreetFighter 2 Champ edition
It’s an 8 bit system, in that it has an 8 bit CPU (65C02), and 8 bit architecture, but it’s also true to say it has 16 bit graphics because it’s custom graphics chip is 16 bit, and incidentally runs 4 times faster than the CPU. Now they just need to make a kit so we can have an Atari lynx the size of a Game boy micro 😅
I have the gen 2 in storage. it would drain 6 AAs in just over an hour. Power adaptor wasn't much better. the connector was cheap and would break contact if you moved too much.
Idea para una nueva serie de videos sobre consolas portátiles

I have had my model 1 from day one. Screen died and modded it with a McWill screen. Only 2 good games raiden and roadblasters...
I bought one brand new and retuned it within 12 hrs because at the time I was disappointed with it. Regret it now. Should of kept it. Lesson learned.
