    There can be a lot of joy in collecting retro systems that aren't necessarily Nintendo or Sega and hopefully this video can open people's eyes up to something a little different... and often much cheaper!

      MetalJesusRocks I think the system had power but the programmers just weren't there. No Japanese support in the 80s and early 90s was a death wish. I like seeing your opinion on the system though.

      Movie Nerd Fair enough, but I think it's not all that different today it's just that we have more American and European developers to choose from. But even back then you had plenty of non-Japanese games.

    Gotta say, In a day and age where the internet is filled with clickbait, you bring titles that say what your video is, and the content is GREAT! This is just one reason you will always be respected in the gaming world

    Interesting thing about the lynx is that its actually a 16 bit machine which in 1989 was pretty damn crazy.

      Like the NEC PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16, it has a 16-bit graphics chip. The CPU is a very fast 6502 though. The 6502 was cheap and the Motorola 6809 or 68000 weren't available with a decent licensing deal like the 6502 was at the time.

      Same. I was so jealous of these kids that brought one in to my local barber shop. I always wanted one, but my parents weren't going to drop $180 ($445 adjusted for inflation at the time of this comment) on it, so Gameboy it was.

  • @Guns7469

    The atari lynx had one of the clearest, most brilliant screens of its time. The games were amazing with scaling effects and gameplay that outhoarspowered even some of the console games of that gen. Its such a shame it was overlooked by so many. This system was a beast.

    • @AlexOjideagu2
      @AlexOjideagu2 6 років тому +3

      it's so annoying that Lynx games look terrible in videos. All these kids have no idea how amazing the scaling and other effects look on the hardware. For example California games the waves and scaling on the halfpipe.

      @10072018 6 років тому +2

      Even back in the day the screenshots looked HORRIBLE, but in real life the screen looked great. The scan lines disappeared and the sprites were usually so big that pixelation wasn't an issue.

      Lynx had the lowest resolution of all handhelds at 160*102 , blocky visuals but once you saw it play ? Nice. Actually technically very impressive with 64kb ram

      It was way pricier than the Gameboy, it's main competitor. Also, bulkier in design. And a paltry library (with some gems in it, admittedly). I guess that's why it wasn't an instant hit.
      Still, nice to look back on as an intriguing piece of hardware.

    Minor technical jargon thing; the original back-light is not a "back-light", it's a "front-light". It's the same difference between the AGS-001 and AGS-101 GBA SP. EDIT: Correction, the Lynx does indeed have a "back-light", however it is a giant CFL bulb that is stuffed into the console! Most solutions at the time would have had a smaller pair of CFL bulbs at the side of the screen acting as a front-light, rather than a big one at the back sucking up all the battery life.
    If you want more detail about this (for the technical curious): Old LCD displays had a reflective surface behind them. Light would reflect off that surface and the colours would get filtered out (or blacks, in the case of the monochrome Game Boy). This is why you need light to see these screens (the old sun-light issue, or playing Gameboy during a road trip by street light).
    A front-light still uses the same reflective surface, but shines light inside the device itself so you don't need an external source of light to see what the heck is on the screen. The problem is, it's still heavily affected by surrounding light (still has the same reflective surface) and the actual front-light produces glare.
    A back-light replaces the reflective surface with a light-emitting surface. The lowering costs of the blue LED allowed manufacturers in the early-mid 2000s to use a single white LED panel rather as a back-light, so rather than reflecting external light (or front-light) through the LCD the white LED panel will shine light directly at you, through the LCD display. Means that far less external light reflects off the display.
    It seems like a small thing, but the back-light on a AGS-100 GBA SP is a milestone that shows exactly when white LED panels became cheap enough to replace the white LED strips that typical illuminated displays used prior. Seems rather cool to have been alive during that threshold in technical achievement, now that practically every single device we have use white LED panels for illumination.
    OLED is the next milestone, which will replace white LED panels with actual RGB LEDs.

      Xilefian that was fascinating

    • @Xilefian
      @Xilefian 6 років тому

      Hey, thanks, but I must correct myself that I was actually wrong; the Atari Lynx DID indeed have a "back-light" - but it did not use LED panel for it (being a 90s device) - it used a giant CFL bulb!
      I couldn't believe this when I found it out. It seems absolutely ridiculous to have a handheld game-console that has a full-on light-bulb stuck inside it just so you could see the screen. It would have seriously killed the battery life - most of the energy consumed would have been powering that fat, beefy, inefficient CFL bulb!

  • @10072018
    @10072018 6 років тому +3

    Things people today need to know:
    1. The scan lines are not visible in person. They are an effect of photography.
    2. In most of the games the sprites were so large that pixelation wasn't really that noticeable.
    3. The Lynx was extremely powerful, rivaling or surpassing some home consoles. It could animate polygons and run real 3D games (Hard Drivin'). The scaling capabilities are stuff of legend. Many of the games had parallax scrolling too, and again HUGE sprites.
    4. It was very solid and sturdy, did not have the cheap feeling of the Jaguar.
    5. Aside from battery life and game selection it was better than Gameboy in every way.

    I got my first Lynx as a birthday present (I had to "cash in" my Christmas present as well that year to talk my parents into getting me a Lynx) in 1989. It was my favorite thing on planet Earth, even though I only had California Games to start out. People used to come from all around to watch me play it because it was so amazing for the time period. Seriously, strangers would walk up to me and just watch me play at gas stations, mini golf courses, the mall, wherever. That's the only time I've ever owned anything that made me the center of attention wherever I went just from owning it. As a shy kid back then, I was not a fan of the attention, but it was worth it for the sweet sweet gaming, color screen, etc. It wore out from "normal" wear and tear (I played it A LOT) after only a year or a year and a half or so. I got another one for Christmas/birthday immediately and that one lasted 2 years. At that point I decided to move on to other systems since I couldn't stand to pay all that money for a 3rd Lynx. As the years passed, I couldn't stop thinking about some of my farvorite Lynx games, so I bought another one about 10 years later and still have it to this day, despite a cracked screen. I did lose one of my favorite games, but otherwise have all of my original accessories and games and I bust it out several times a year to have some nostalgic fun. Thanks for the heads-up on the screen mod, I plan on getting another lynx soon and a few more games and the screen mod looks like a must. I always thought the 2nd lynx model looked like garbage compared to the 1st one, so I hope I can find a model 1. Btw, my favorite game was Gates Of Zendocon and I still have the entire game memorized because I played it so much. Thanks for the great video. :)

    From a old skool lynx owner that owned and played the games way back in the day.
    Bad games / not worth it that are in this video :
    Slime world : its nothing like metroid , dont get your hope up this game is boring, repetitive and confusing.
    Scrapyard dog : Not a very fun game , its somewhat unclear what this game tries to be , its not really a platformer and the gameplay is just bad.
    Should add to your collection :
    (not showed in gameplay but some where in the last shot with the pile of games )
    Toki : Best arcade port of a very fun action side scroller, my favorite lynx game.
    Fun gameplay , good graphics.
    Klaxx :
    A very fun adn addictive puzzle game with voice samples that blew my mind back at the day when i played it.
    Rampage :
    This game is on many platforms but the lynx version is sone of the best a great arcade port, fun game twhith great graphics and sound effects as well.
    Pac Land : Fun version of a old skool arcade game.

    The Lynx and Game gear are different and not similar, outside that they both drain batteries and have a colour display.
    The lynx is based on the same tech as a Amiga home computer and is a 16 bit handheld.
    The Game Gear is based on the master system and is a 8 bit handheld.

Most games are cheap, but you will notice there are a few expensive ones like Lemmings and Desert Strike. Also, you can get a flash cart or emulate lynx on the psp or other emulators. Feel free to join our Facebook group "Atari Lynx Fans". Great video man!

    lol I watched the entire series run of "Sex and the City" when I was a teenager (I imagine sex in the title drew me in). It's actually a fun show, but the films are pretty crap.
    My friend growing up had both the Game Gear and the Lynx. He was always big into games, whereas it took until the PS1 days which is when I really get into games. I think it's mostly down the fact I was an active kid. Most summers I'd only return home to eat & sleep.
    Unsurprisingly, my memories of trying his Game Gear & Lynx at his house include sitting by a power outlet. Great systems, but you would have needed a decent supply of rechargeable AAs, or just the power adapter. And at that point, is it really portable?

  • @ClaudiuK2
    @ClaudiuK2 6 років тому +5

    Why did it take so much for others to come with a system like this but cheaper?
    The GameBoy Color was released 9 years afer this one... And it was a small upgrade from the original GB.

    • @northofnashira2575
      @northofnashira2575 6 років тому +3

      Claudiu K2 Did you look at the original screen quality and hear that 6 AA batteries would be completely drained in about 4 hours? Basically, Atari beat Nintendo to the color display (mostly due to cost since Lynx was about $100 more than the gameboy) and the tech wasn't available yet for Nintendo to improve above the Lynx's graphics. On top of all of that, Nintendo was already winning the handheld market. Though I never had one, I knew tons of people that had gameboys, even multiple for households so siblings wouldn't fight over one gameboy. I knew a total of one person that owned a Lynx.

    • @TheJeremyHolloway
      @TheJeremyHolloway 6 років тому

      Atari Corp didn't expect the Lynx to cost $179. It was supposed to be $129-149 but the LCD vendor raised the price on them before launch.

      Atari Lynx is definitely WAY HIGH UP on the list of shittiest handhelds of all-time. MJR has a serious problem with judging anything. I can safely say to anybody watching his videos that you should NEVER take a word out of his mouth as representing reality when it comes to video game software. He knows his hardware very well, such as mentioning the screen mods he had done for the Lynx, Game Gear, and GBA, but when it comes to the actual games he is completely wrong basically all of the time. I challenge anybody who has never played an Atari home or handheld console to actually try ANY of the games he mentioned in his favorite games list for this system and have fun for more than a few minutes before you turn the piece of shit off and never play it again.
      Even if you had an Intellivision, Caleco Vision, NES, Master System, TurboGrafix, and absolutely loved the arcade and PC classics like Rygar and Red Baron it is beyond any doubt that you will not be able to have any decent amount of fun playing any of the crap in this video. Lynx games were shit back then, still shit today, always be nothing more than shit, and perfectly match the value of MJR's opinion on what games are good or bad. Don't waste your money by listening to him. It's really sad that there are probably a ton of people who make purchases based on this shit.

    • @Carnage6X
      @Carnage6X 6 років тому +3

      Sorry but you're wrong. I had a Lynx only back in the day by choice because I loved the Atari arcade games and the Lynx had tons of good ports of those. You sound like one of those people who just goes on people's videos to crap on their opinions but you have no experience actually playing the games that are being talked about. I played games like Battlewheels, Blue Lightning, Electrocop, Gauntlet, Rampart, Ninja Gaiden and more for hours so your statement is factually untrue.

    • @GarageLoot
      @GarageLoot 6 років тому +1

      djhenyo I feel like you are comparing to today's standards. I was a Game Gear kid and the quality destroyed the Game Boy....Look at the Game Gear Today.... :/

    • @djhenyo
      @djhenyo 6 років тому +1

      +Carnage6X didn't play Ninja Gaiden on the Lynx. What you played was "Ninja Gaiden" because the one and only way it even remotely resembled the arcade game was if you were staring at a static screenshot with your eyes squinted as hard as possible so that your vision becomes very dark and blurry. The moment you unpause the game it moves, controls, and plays absolutely nothing like the real thing. Same goes for Rygar and all of the other arcade "ports" on the Lynx. They couldn't even get Ms. Pacman right. She moves slow as fuck just like Ryu. If you want to play a horrible looking, sounding, and controlling version of Atari arcade games when there are infinitely more faithful and fun ports of all of those games for cheaper on other systems, then go ahead and waste your money on a Lynx. People without shit judgement will be able to easily see that this is NOT the Ninja Gaiden game they were looking for: ua-cam.com/video/khK5RD5CFOc/v-deo.html
      If you cannot tell that whatever is in that video is pure fucking garbage then you're beyond help.
