As one of the 4 people who wanted to know about dvds I just want to say a massive thanks for checking all that and thanks again for the amazing content
Hey Adam, I was looking forward to you covering the retro gem for the PS2. I love the PS2 as I grew up with it but the picture quality always disappointed me on modern displays. Hopefully the output quality will continue to improve over the next decade. Thanks for another great video!
dude i know its not your typical video but I'd watch a Twisted Metal Black video. That game is so cool but so HARD! would love some game play tips, game play video, and why its your definitive childhood PS2 game. love your work dude!
Physical DVDs & PS2 both are one of my favorite subjects! Whenever i got those Blu-Ray & DVD sets i would give away my Blu-Ray & keep the DVD version! Love the intro to the PS1 & PS2! That intro noise just brings back fun memories! No Wii games for me today going to play my PS2!!! Tekken 5 on the PS2! You are a Formidable Fighter Adam! One of Tekkens Best! Strength through Order! That is Tekken!
You don't even need a MC for Free McBoot anymore. The Memory Pro 2 can be loaded with a virtual version of Free McBoot and then you set it as the original MC to boot from and it just works. It'll load Free McBoot on launch and then switch MCs when you load games. It's pretty sweet and then you still have an open MC slot for whatever you want...
also, for some years now if you opt to use a hard drive/ssd of 2tb or less you can install it directly on to the hard drive. Takes about 8 seconds longer to boot but no need to fiddle with a memory card which is nice for some folks.
sweet setup! about the only part of the equation I have any experience with is FMCB, mostly because I had it before I was able to import my own JPS2! from what I understand in the way it works it makes sense DVD movies would have issues with it. might also have to track down one of those memory cards as well!!
Adam, I have fond memories of PS1 & 2 and my brother & my friends playing the wrestling games on that system. The WWE Raw Vs. Smackdown games were just awesome until the relaunch of ECW roster in the game & didn’t let me have my controller setup and then when the 2k series happened the fighting engine as far is setting up my controller the way I like it doesn’t exist.
Great video! I ended up copying everything off my freeMcBoot card onto the Memcard Pro. Just so I don’t need to have that second memory card plugged in.
3:25 Blood will Tell is one of those games I think deserves a digital re release on the PS store, but I feel like the licensing (The manga the game is based on, Dororo) might be holding that one back. (Haunting Ground should get one as well. That has a better chance to get a digital release. It was gonna on the NA PS3 store, but that never happened.)
Hey Adam! I just recently upgraded my PS2 with an SSD and copied about 150 of my games to it and it's been an absolute blast! The load times are insane and some of my games play even better than ever since even some of my damaged discs were somehow able to create clean rips on my PC! It's almost perfect, but I have one small issue that I wonder of you're familiar with. The PS2 that I modded is a model 30001 bought day one in October 2000. The reason I chose to upgrade thos console specifically was because the disc drive completely gave out on it a few years ago and I wanted to give it a second life. My main unit is a model 30001R from May 2002. I've been using component video on my PS2 consoles for as long as I can remember, but I noticed that 480p games look ever so slightly softer on my modded console compared to the unmodded one. This is something I probably would have never noticed if it weren't for the pixel perfect profiles I created on my retrotink 4k. My question for you is this: is the image softer on my modded PS2 because it is a launch unit and they are known to have worse image quality than later revisions, or is it just a quirk of OPL? I can't find anything about it online, and I know that you are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to picture quality on retro consoles. If it is an issue with the console simply being older, I can always just pop the SSD into my main PS2, but I kinda like the idea of using the older unit with the SSD since it is literally unusable otherwise.
I do have a complete full ps2 set. All the North American release and all the other regional exclusives. I was collecting them for 7 years, and then in 2018, I finally got the full set. The hardest games for me to find were Kuon, Rule of Rose, and Silent Hill 2 and 3, but almost 7 years ago I did tracked them down in really good shape and very cheap. I also own a lot of ps2 controllers in different color and regional versions of ps2 consoles in different colors. It's almost like how you did with the dreamcast. The hdmi mod on the ps2 looks cool, and I think I might get my hands on the kit one day to have my ultimate ps2 even more better.
I've been looking for an HDMI solution for PS2 for years & now it's here!!! I have a mod chip in mine for imports (STILL won't play Vampire: Darkstalkers Collection - need an actual Japanese slim for that...) ⛩🎮⛩ LOVE Justin - hasn't been returning my phone calls!!! Brother does FANTASTICAL work, indeed!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Great video, Adam!!! Keep up the great work, Bruv...🤓💙🕹
I use my PS2 with retrovision component cables and the retrotink 2x pro multi and it cleans the image the best without mods. It's plenty enough for me. I've been wanting the retrotink 4k but it's so expensive.
i also have an hdmi modded ps2 and even though the image is quite clearer the ps2 is the only one from that gen that looks good only on a crt. Unlike the gc xbox or dc that become amazing with hdmi the ps2 still looks blurry and crappy...
I have a soft-modded PS2 and I use OPL with GSM to force video modes other than 480i. As you mentioned, the results are patchy but I'm lucky that most of the games I play do have a native 480p mode, which is why my system plays NTSC games even though I'm in the PAL region
An additional upgrade you can do is install an internal BlueRetro controller mod, this will allow basically any BT controller, that includes the Dualshock 4 and Dualsense.
I wish everything would load better. I modded a PS2 years ago but you're right, playing discs is by far better. I just want a PS2 i can load up games i own on a hard drive and play. It works great in an Xbox... Perfect.
everyting loads better from HDD... OPL has near perfect compatibility, but i noticed a lot of people have problems with their HDD setup for some reason.....
Hopefully we get a mClassic that upscales to 4K (or 8K if you happen to have an 8K TV). I also don't understand why a lot of people don't like the mClassic.
I don't get the hate for the mClassic either. I set my Nintendo Switch to 720p, then I let the mClassic pick up the slack and the games look incredible on my 4K TV. I also use the mClassic with my PSVR1 and it really helps Skyrim VR to look better.
So, I like your ideas and knowledge. You have a nice setup(gameroom, the games and props) Update your camera tech maybe use a filter. Your content is very dark and grainy at 4, so just a simple tweek. Other than that you are golden.
No amount of money will make a PS2 output good looking video in my opinion. My recommendation would be passing it through GBS-Control for basic motion deinterlacing and then an OSSC for line doubling and saving a bunch of money
Nice, I wish mine was this hooked up, but since I have a Retrotink4k PS2 comes out pretty nice with just the HD Retrovision Component cables. I bought my XStation modded ps1 from PowrUp, was decently priced, I wish the hdmi mods didn’t cost this high though..
The region mod seems cool too, at the moment I just have 2 PS2’s - my original fat from 2000s that is HDD modded and plays some US discs, not all though - that drive is on its way out I think, then I have a Japanese PS2 slim that I use for my JP disc collection 😊
Just throwing out there, Mechapwn is a soft mod that makes ps2 play as developer system and region free. It’s free it takes like 5 minutes and no mod chip needed. I’ve never had issue playing imports off it. Also can’t believe Adam doesn’t know Jackass the video game also supports 1080i. As does Valkyrie profile 2.
@@ar-game-test yeah I was just strictly talking about importing physical games. To me I don’t have need for back ups or burns, I rather just play off OPL or HD Loader at that point. But of course Modchips and hard mods still have place, just larger investment and technical know how.
I’ve been a sub for you for years but respectfully say, you’ve made allot of ps2 videos.Especially for a guy who has said he hates the ps2 and wish the ps1 was a one and done.
Retrotink 4K couldn't make PS2 480i games look good for me on LG G4. 480p games looked OK. But I was using component cables through the tink as I don't have a PS2 with RetroGEM. I wonder how the RetroGEM and Tink 4K combined would look...
Have a similar setup as this PS2 and same TV as you and for me on my 77" G4 my CECHA00 PS3 when playing PS2 games is the GOAT for best image. Paired with both an Mclassic and Retrotink 4K PS2 games genuinely look incredible. I just played through Urban Reign that has native 480p and widescreen...wow, genuinely looks like an original Xbox or Gamecube game. I'd recommend that all day.
I want Power Up to do more mods for PSP! I sent him my PSP to do the tablet battery mod, I suppose he hadn't done one before, because it didn't really work very well. I hope he gets back to it so I can get it repaired!
Could you ever do a video showing your PS2 collection? I'm curious to see what you have. Also, I don't know if I've gotten used to the PS2, but I think regular component 480i looks fine (at least on a TV that natively supports it)
I got mine with a DualSense pad via 8BitDo adapter, FMCBoot and SSD via the HDD adapter. Very satisfied, my real problem is connection to HDTV... Im using a good Component cable, my HDTV still have Component input but it clearly does a poor job deinterlizing. Retrotink products are way too expensive to import in my country and i do not know nobody who does that GEM installation. Also, i thought Region modifications were not necessary anymore, my PS2 is Japanese and it reads US games disc... AFAIK you can free the region locks just with software. Am i wrong?
I've heard the retro tink 5X and 4K do a better job with motion adaptive deinterlacing than the Pixel FX mods which produces a sharper image when displaying interlaced content but it would be nice for the ps2 modding scene to get their sh*t together like the GameCube community with forcing 480p in all games
PCSX2 emulator is the cleanest ps2 you will ever see, and its emulates top ps2 games so well they look amazing in 4k, few years ago I would say that I prefer original hardware today emulation is my go to, ps1/ps2 games played that way invoke more nostalgia for me than aging original hardware.
I never used the TOSlink, but I'd rather preserve that than lose the port for a mod. I would rather sacrifice the disc drive and all the lasers prone to eventual failure for a true ODE MODE to run games instead of HD loader/Free McBoot, especially for slim models that never had a native hard drive connection. But it's nice to see progress nonetheless for the scene to mod the console to right the wrongs of not future-proofing and hopefully restore it to GOAT status and reclaim the throne from the VM Labs NuOn and the Nintendo Gamecube
I'm kinda shocked NTSC PS2s can't use 50Hz. I've had experiences using boot discs and modified PAL consoles, once you get past the region lockout they display either 60Hz or 50Hz depending on the region of the disc. I don't know if it is purely a PAL thing, but here you'll be hard dressed to find a modern HDTV that doesn't display both refresh rates. Even my CRT has the option to display both. I'm Australian.
Most Australian PAL TVs, VCRs etc. by the mid 90s could display both PAL and NTSC modes and even consoles of the PS2 era had some games with 60hz display modes. Only issue is input with some NTSC consoles if using RF or trying to record from an NTSC player (e.g. LaserDisc to VHS or DVD) depending on the recorder.
Thanks for sharing such valuable information! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
I love PS2 because of this very reason, I have played ps2 on fat ps3 - it works fine (i didn't want to spend on modding the ps2 and the ps3 exploits run ps2 from its harddrive easily - that said, I always found the ps2 visually lucking compare to its contemporaries - and I don't believe I say it, but playing ps2 on pcsx2 (emu) is night and day better than any of the other way, I think its the only system (apart from old dos games) that I prefer to play on an emulator, it looks nothing short of stunning! (you have to try once - and you don't have a beefy pc for it) - I know there are thing I am not proud of and I can't believe myself enjoying emu over og. but man... give it a try.
I have my memcardpro2 always boot bank 1 which is freemcboot, and then any game I pick it switches to a new bank based on the game 😁 so I have an empty slot 2, but I prefer that
I found out and it's funny that having two ps2 multitap and having 8 ps2 memory cards the ones that are 128MB. The grand total of save space is 1GB. ^_^
IMO, booting game from a hard drive with the PS2 is way less enjoyable than what we can encounter with original xbox, gamecube and the dreamcast, there is always a thing to tweak and it is why I stick to my good old modbo modded ps2. If you have a sizeable collection, OPL has always been a nightmare for me. Also concerning capacitors, even if they haven't leak the one near the power line are usually very out of specs. I've recapped 3 differents PS2 so far and it is what I have seen
@AdamKoralik right. Its hit and miss. Some won't even run. However I find it runs some games even nicer than deinterlacing methods. Check out bully, san andreas, or resident evil code Veronica
Hey adam i finally moved back to alaska and happy i moved to anchroage the 5th ave mall has this awesome retro shop and since my 2024 has been nothing but retro on my switch playing hd remasters defentive edtion of those games and gave up my ps4s cause of the move and the ps2 cost alot and its hard to find mint comdition games i was like i know what i can afford thats now retro i traded in my 2ds xl for a 320 gb ps3 slim got ac 1 revalations and red dead and fifa and omg 07-15 memoreys feeling like i was in my 20s again just feels great screw modern gaming and lets go retro again ahd whats funny is the ps3 is still the best when my wired switch pdp mario comtroller works on it better then the ds3 😂😂😂😂😂
How could he forget enter the matrix? 1080i baby! Also I was able to run lego batman at 1080i with GSM, and that baby was clear. Probably more games since GSM in some cases is pretty nice. (not all though, lol)
Hmm, not sure about this. Glad I still keep my ps2 original for nostalgia and for all these "features" I emulate to get an even better experience than this
Constant uploads, viewer interaction, thorough vids and more! the ultimate channel!
And I don't even do sponsorships.
The PS2 scene always surprises me with how much thing keep changing, I almost can't keep up with it. Thanks for sharing Adam! 😎
If you want the PS2 output to look good, use a CRT TV/monitor with RGB or component. All blur gone.
The amount of in depth explaining and dedication to your videos is outstanding.

Cool to see how far we have come technology-wise for console hardware capabilities. Thanks for sharing.
This looks awesome. But yeah I do agree the software side of system modding does need some updating.
Dude, amazing video. Never heard of a Mclassic until today. Just recently bought a new PS2 with All these upgrades. I might have to get a Mclassic now
Get a proper video upscaler. Not the mclassic.

Four PS2 games support 1080i: Gran Turismo 4, Tourist Trophy, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria and Jackass: The Game (for whatever reason).

Is there actually any speed benefits from sdd to a hdd on the ps2 itself
Just the absence of seek times. I do it more for reliability.
I have my memcardpro2 always boot bank 1 which is freemcboot, and then any game I pick it switches to a new bank based on the game 😁 so I have an empty slot 2, but I prefer that
Is it possible to use the freemcboot using the multitap?
I found out and it's funny that having two ps2 multitap and having 8 ps2 memory cards the ones that are 128MB. The grand total of save space is 1GB. ^_^
What's your take on the Evercade?
Is it a good investment for reteo gamers, who want to own their games & play classic games on modern Television?
Never used one to be honest.
PCSX2 can natively/internally render PS2 games in HD, 4K, etc.
That's because it's an emulator.
Hey Adam, I’m looking to mod a 360 I got. Any places you recommend I can send it in to?
I did a video on one a few years ago, but the guy who did the modification doesn't do that anymore. :/
@@AdamKoralik I’ve seen a place called powrupgaming, but I don’t know much about them
IMO, booting game from a hard drive with the PS2 is way less enjoyable than what we can encounter with original xbox, gamecube and the dreamcast, there is always a thing to tweak and it is why I stick to my good old modbo modded ps2. If you have a sizeable collection, OPL has always been a nightmare for me.
Also concerning capacitors, even if they haven't leak the one near the power line are usually very out of specs. I've recapped 3 differents PS2 so far and it is what I have seen
Run gsm at 480p then mclassic upto 1440p. Get a edid to force 1440p if needed
Yeah, as I said in the video, I find GSM to be insufficient.
Anchorage is great!
retrogem does retain the original video out support. thats one of their pros
Can you review XEB+ neutrino and UDPBD for XEB+ for ps2 it's a xmb like version that is similar to OPL with new features 🤔
It supports 2tb+ hdds in exfat and isos format, i saw a vid from a youtuber
Never heard of it to be honest.
Didn'trealize just how far fat ps2 mods have come
ultimate comment
Adam!
How could he forget enter the matrix? 1080i baby!
Also I was able to run lego batman at 1080i with GSM, and that baby was clear.
Probably more games since GSM in some cases is pretty nice. (not all though, lol)
I forgot to mention, you patch games to run in 480p manually also
Ah yes, the Sony GameCube
Twee-ter! 😂😂😂 Woah, man 2005 is back….woohoo! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
1080i looks great on xbox 360. Nearly can't tell the difference between 1080p. It's not the format
Since you have a hdd in a fat ps2, you can use freehdboot, and dont need a freemcboot card.
It’s morphing time
480p. Yeah with lag, dropped frames and screen tearing 😔
he has modded my consoles
hes gg
Yikes! $700 for a console with similar specs on that website.
You poor bro. A root Canale is 1.4k. The PS5 Pro is an even worse deal as it has 0 games. Thats a down payment on a Changli.
@@TempoLOOKING Im not poor… I am just not an idiot willing to pay $700 for a PS2 😂
I just use my PS3 😉
Ps2 pro ❤
There’s an update to opl way better
Hmm, not sure about this. Glad I still keep my ps2 original for nostalgia and for all these "features" I emulate to get an even better experience than this
I mean, the whole point is not to use emulation, but I respect if that's how you want to experience your PS2.
Lol shiny edition 👍
TwiTTer like an Englishman.
twi-terrr...lol
Mod the ps2 so that it can play ps3 games
Seems legit.
I want this. But do you still prefer to play PS2 games on a PS3 that can play PS2 games?
Hit or miss depending on the game to be honest.
@@AdamKoralik well then this seems like a great option to get.
