  • With the ability to transform into various objects, the Transformers are usually known for their alternate mode. But the leader of the Decepticons, Megatron, took the most controversial one of them all!

I was too busy playing Spy Hunter the arcade game in the front of the store near the cashier's, I saw a mother buying her son a He-Man toy, I was excited I ran to the toys section there were two Megatron's left , I sed to myself DAM! I have no money I spent all my money playing Spy Hunter, I ran home I saw 2 rolled up quarters my mom's laundry money, My Dad saw me and said we are doing the laundry, I asked him " can you buy me Megatron toy it's at CH Martin please now? There's 2 left Dad" he sed NO next time, I was so angry and pissed off, After doing laundry, My friends and I visited CH Martin I checked no more Megatron sold out, I never bought Megatron brand new from a box I traded an Nintendo game for Megatron

I'm a G1 fan, so gun mode is always gonna have a soft spot in my heart. But making him a tank is a good, sensible solution. It sort of preserves the idea that Megatron is essentially a self contained weapon of mass-autobot-destruction whose alt mode largely exists to boost his already extreme firepower, and also makes him more versatile and autonomous in combat.

    • @RodimusPrimal

I like the idea of both. The gun is also psychological to his troops. They follow Megatron because he lends them HIS power, but ultimately he commands. The tank is basically a mobile gun.

The image of megatron as a gun needing to be held, aimed and trigger pulled by someone taught me at a young age that a gun, though a deadly weapon, is just a tool, like a knife or axe. It all depends on who's holding the gun, and how they use it.

  • @Autobot_Megatron
    @Autobot_Megatron 3 роки тому +30

Being a tank is probably the only best alternate mode for Megatron, although Galvatron transforming into a giant cannon is also another great form that could've fit for Megatron as well. I'm also a huge fan of the IDW comics too, and Megatron had a kickass redesign when he took on the form of a stealth bomber (though I hated the fact he used a rail gun and not a fusion cannon).
The thing for me is that while these alternate forms are great, they're not unique to Megatron. To me, I'll always associate a tank mode with guys like Blitzwing and Warpath. The cannon was unique to Galvatron, and thus I associate it with him (even if they're technically the same character). The fighter jet was a form that many characters took on, but Starscream always comes to mind first when I think of it. And of course, anyone would think of Optimus Prime anytime they see or think of a truck first and foremost before any other character that has that form (ie: Motormaster). So, when we're talking about Megatron in this sense....he'll always be a handgun, first and foremost, to me. That was the unique part of his form was that, despite being one of the most powerful and feared transformers around, his form was practically useless if he had nobody to weild him- he had to rely on someone trustworthy. I liked that.

There is something symbolic about Megatron, the Leader of the Decepticons, having to be used by one of his underlings. Not just the trust matter, but the idea that he is making himself a servant, reducing himself to beneath those he leads. It is, ironicly, a positive leadership trait, and likely why, despite his autocratic command style, he has the loyalty of those like Soundwave, in a society based entirely on strength.

Always thought Megatron would have been a bit more imposing in animation and the comics if he could get around under his own steam rather than having to be carried by his troops (even though in the cartoons he could fly in robot mode). As a tank, Megatron looks well-suited, while still retaining the gun component.

I'd love to see a Megatron who, when in gun mode, completely overtakes the consciousness of whoever's holding him, be it Decepticon OR Autobot. That way he doesn't need to rely on the potentially inferior skills of whoever's using him, he doesn't have to worry about being misused (I.E. Starscream holding him and "accidentally" sabotaging his plans with him), and it adds an extra element of tension for the odd chance an Autobot is forced to handle him to take care of a greater threat. If Optimus has to use him, there's the possibility of Megatron taking over his mind, and all Optimus has to go on that Megatron WON'T is his WORD. O_O

For that reason... no. I don't think we should. I could imagine a scene in a movie where a human politician needs to be escorted by a Decepticon inside a courtroom (to be under Megatron's surveillance) and Soundwave picks a nearby object to transform into that the human could carry. Maybe the tape recorder can also be used to read the mind of a human ( similar to powers that Soundwave had in the cartoon )

Since one of the most defining characteristics of the Decepticons is their ability to fly, it would make sense why their leader would transform into a jet. Plus, he's able to move faster from one place to another by soaring the skies, than if he was a tank or a gun, while still being able to blast others mid-flight.

Yeah I can understand why toy gun laws changed and maybe it's because I live outside USA but it's kinda amusing that legislators in America can change toy gun laws overnight when a tragedy happens but there have been mass shootings occurring for decades yet the NRA is so powerful over there that the laws surrounding real guns are as good as untouchable. The irony is that a person in America can more easily get their hands on a real gun than they can get a toy gun.

@@Nagatem That's not a bad idea. I used to own the Megatron that turned into a Nerf gun (for which I was perfectly happy with) likewise the original Galvatron (come on Hasbro/Takara you really should do a Masterpiece version of him sometime soon) toy not only turn into a space age laser cannon, but also a space age style ray gun.
So really they could still make him into a gun, just not one that exists in real life.
That said though as cool and edgy in having Megs turn into a P38 is to some people (myself included) may be, it is at the end of the day a little silly, I mean think about it if Megs is the Leader of the Decepticons, right so why would he turn himself into something as lowly as a weapon? This would put him into a potentially vulnerable position, especially if he were to keep on putting himself into the hands of a certain Air Commander we all know and love, if you get what I mean...
That said however, you could say that Megatron sort of did it to truant Starscream in the sense that Megs would put himself into his second in commands hands whereby Star would see it as a chance to snap his leader in two on his knee, however he would also know that if he attempt to do so Megs would simply turn back into robot mode and kill him.
This I will add is my head canon with regards to the characters.
The tank mode on the other hand is in fact the mode I grew up with, not due to the more recent versions of TF but rather with the G2 toys, although I'm a G1 fan though and though, (I started watching Transformers thanks to re runs on Sky One's 'The Fun Factory' and I used to have a few second hand toys, books and annuals, plus the VHS of the 1986 movie to boot) the sort lived G2 line you could say were 'my' Transformers as a boy (I wasn't all that keen on Beast Wars though, in fact it was quite a while before I found that it was related to Transformers at all!) I didn't have the G2 Megatron at the time (I do now) but he always was a figure that I wanted, among others...
The tank mode, which I feel is fairly reasonable it certainly suits the character, plus in the G2 comic he is in fact the SAME Megatron from the G1 comics who had been repaired by Cobra in return for a few bits of scrap, for which they see as cutting edge tech (well we are talking about an advanced alien race here, their trash would surely blow our minds) in order to fight GI Joe with, so in a way that is also a variant of sorts, of the original Megs, with that in mind I am kind of stuck in the middle, I'm not all that keen when Hasbro have Megatrons that look like the G1 version in their robot modes, but then they can only turn into a tank, in a way I feel like its cheating fans and I'd even say that it's mocking fans who cannot afford the Masterpiece versions or to be able to afford to get one from overseas (unless they live in Japan) plus the fee to bribe custom officials to 'look the other way' when bringing it into nations where the figure is banned. That kind of behaviour ticks me off.
As it stands I do own the MP 36, so as far as I see things I've (sort of) got a G1 Megatron, in a way, so I'm fine.
PS If I've inadvertently made anyone envious of me for owning a MP 36 then I'm sorry for making you feel that and you have my sympathies, who knows maybe you'll have better luck on the other side eh....

No, and I'm a G1 fan. I'm a child of the '80's, I watched the original cartoon as a kid, Optimus Prime was my hero, and I cried my eyes out when he died in Transformers: The Movie.
It was *always* silly that the most dangerous and menacing of the Decepticons had to be fired by someone else. And it's not a sign of trust in his troops: he kept having *Starscream* among all his Decepticons fire him? Starscream, always scheming and waiting for a shot to usurp him? Whom he finally reduced to dust in the animated movie? His real concern when transformed into his alt mode was blasting Autobots and anything in his way and Starscream (and Soundwave) were usually conveniently nearby, being high-ranked Decepticons.
I pretty much agree with the update of turning him into a tank. Giving Megatron autonomy in his alt mode is just proper for the franchise's main villain.
Alternatively, Megatron/Galvatron's transformation into a cannon also works. In the sense that he's immobile (but firing himself) but ultra-powerful, it's a pretty good statement of his character that his alt mode is *purely* a weapon, an instrument of complete destruction. He blasts stuff in his alt mode- that's all he does. It's perfect.
I gotta draw your attention to 17:40. His Cybertronian form on the left, as a tank, was based on his appearance in the War for Cybertron video game. The brilliance of that design is that it's not just a tank but it looks like the entire vehicle was built around his cannon. Yeah, okay, tanks are pretty much vehicles built around their main guns, that's their point, but tanks are built with a hull and turret in mind first. War for Cybertron Megatron, as a Cybertronian tank, was basically a cannon that they added stuff to just so it looks like it can move. And it's in that sense that this version of Megatron is a pretty good update that also recalls his original form as a Walther P38-style gun. It's got the best of both old and new.
I do disagree, though, with his depictions as some sort of flying vehicle because they add an element of lightness and flimsiness to him. Those are not things you associate with Megatron, even if originally only Decepticons could fly.

Younger generations MAY criticize the alt mode of a gun, but I say it was one of the most innovative things to occur ever in cartoons and that was back in the 80s. Today either they fail at innovation or fail at abusing nostalgia incorrectly. If Travis Knight has a sequel, I really wouldn't mind Megatron turning into a Tank, but there's something about that pew pew gun that really made the 80s something special!

Megatron's alt-mode was a Walther P38 with extensions and optics. It was a fictional gun used in an episode from the 60's spy-series The Man from U.N.C.L.E., then sold as a japanese Diaclone toy, and then Hasbro formed the story around him for Decepticon leader. I always liked the complications for Megatron's altmode such as the "why," the mass-shifting, the inmobility of his altmode, it was cool.

In truth. Megatron's gun alt mode made him more terrifying than his Tank Alt mode. Why? Because anyone can use it. Anyone. Even though Megatron is never seen being the one to sit around and wait (which I know I can be called out on that opinion). If Megatron could play the long game and warp the minds of humans. Suddenly could take over the Earth through a massive war. To witch Megatron and his "Merry Robots" could just show up and "Rescue" the humans from destroying themselves. All to end up having a slave race to mind the resources they need to make energon. And even kill all humans.
Though the reason Megatron's alt mode was changed. The really bad light and stereotyping and stigma that a gun has. Any gun violence that happens. Everyone blames the gun. Never blames the person wielding it. Though also. This is Megatron. He is a Leader. He is a egotistical dictator. Really it is kind of stupid for him to be used by others. So that is why he has a Tank Alt Mode now. HE controls his own abilities. Not allowing some fool or a human just pull the trigger. After all. Humanity blames the object before the person.
Besides cars have killed more human beings than any gun. Yet people like the Autobots...who are mostly cars. *Megatron is confused by this*

"Besides cars have killed more human beings than any gun." Whoever told you that was an idiot. Not as big as you believing him. WWI killed 16,5 million people. WWII killed 72,5 million people. That's 89 million dead just in the two world wars. According to "Deaths in Wars of the 20th Century" by Milton Leitenberg, Cornell College (always state your sources), 41 million people died worldwide in military conflicts from 1945 to 2000 (the 55 years after WWII ended). 2,5 million people died in wars all over the world before 1914 (WWI).
The same source claims 187 million people died in wars in the 20th century alone (1900-2000).
Are you trying to tell me more than 187 million people worldwide have died in cars??
You wouldn't even be correct in regards to the U.S. where there were 39,773 deaths by firearm in 2017. The same year 37,133 died in motor vehicle deaths. Mind you that's in a country "at peace" (debatable) one can only imagine how bad it is in the war zones of the world.

I also like his double-bladed helicopter mode too which looks really aggressive!

he should turn into a tank vehicle mode, and some sort of bazooka as a fireable alternate that his troops can use. The handgun was iconic but not really modern, but something like transforming into a fireable shoulder cannon for one of the other decepticons would work just as well and accomplish the same role as turning him into a weapon that is used by his troops, and it would also add a new element to his iconic arm fusion canon since he'd basically transform into a jumbo version of that for someone else to fire

  • @_WillCAD_
    @_WillCAD_ Рік тому +1

I always loved the irony of Megatron's gun mode requiring him to place trust in one of his troops to use his greatest power - it's what prevented him from simply blasting any of his people who got out of line, because he had to retain enough of their trust for them not to blast him in his more vulnerable alt mode.
But when the gun alt mode became problematic from a PR perspective, I always thought that an M1-A1 Abrams tank was the perfect alt mode for him. It's a huge, powerful Earth vehicle that's a direct match for Optimus Prime's semi truck, yet it's an instrument of war as much as Prime's truck was an instrument of peace. The real Abrams is also equipped with a gigantic main gun, which gives allows the concept of Megatron's fusion canon being most powerful in his alt mode to continue.
Having an alt mode of a Cybertronian aircraft is not a bad option for Megatron, as it reinforces the notion that the Decepticons control the sky while the Autobots rule the ground, but none of the aerial versions of Megatron that I've seen have the oomph of the M1-A1 tank.
Funny thing is, there was an opportunity to give Megatron the best of both worlds - if the Blitzwing triple changer had been used as a new version of Megatron, he'd have had both a powerful tank alt mode, and an aerial alt mode, and being a triple changer he'd have posed more of a danger to Optimus Prime in one-on-one battle since Optimus is not a triple changer.
I'd especially have loved to see Megatron be a triple changer in the live-action film rather than just a jet. But Bay missed the mark on the Transformers in so many ways, I really lost interest after about the third film and couldn't care less about the character designs any more. The recent Bumblebee film, on the other hand, gave us robot modes that were way closer to the G1 animated versions and looked fantastic, while giving us realistic Earth vehicle alt modes, and I'd have loved to have seen a G1 accurate Megatron on Cybertron leading the attack on Iacon.

I don't like the whole mass displacement thing. In my ideal TF universe all the bots would be scaled based on their alt modes. (So that the Aerialbots and the Seekers should be the same size in bot mode, as should the Autobot cars, the minicars and the Stunticons). So Megatron as a pistol makes no sense to me.
The problem with tanks as alt modes is that usually either the turret doesn't rotate as it should to facilitate transformation, or the turret does rotate at the expense of transformation.
I think the best alt mode for Megatron would be an assault gun/self propelled gun. Kind of like a tank with a fixed turret and a cannon that fires forward.

I was recently finally able to get a G1 Megatron again, after my old one had had broken, so I decided to watch this video again. As you said, due to U.S. toy laws, the original toy could unfortunately only be reissued in Japan, making the reissues expensive as well (because of rarity, demand, and cost to import, most likely,) so may as well get the original!
It is definitely a cool toy and unlike any other Transformer.
For a time, I did think it didn't make much sense to have Megatron transform into a gun, but watching the series again and looking at this video and reading around, I can understand why. He does indeed seem to be more powerful in gun mode. Perhaps mass shifting focuses his fusion cannon blast into a death beam of sorts. There is also the addition of the silencer which might provide extra power.
And as you said, Megatron is very much leading from the forefront, and putting trust in his troops to wield him as the ultimate weapon of destruction.
But I also like the addition of the "household item" Transformers, that add variety to the usual vehicles and beasts. It's the idea that a Transformer could be anywhere and be ANYTHING, robots in disguise, as they are. Megatron, Soundwave, Reflector, Blaster, and Perceptor, and of course the cassettes.
I'm glad that the live action movies at least had some of these, Frenzy etc, even if they couldn't mass shift because of "realism." We had not seen those kind of Transformers in a long time.

I agree with what you said about Megatron and the household items alt-modes.
I think that Megatron is more powerful as gun because all the energy normally used for moving and other function needed by his humanoid form, is detoured to his weapon system, increasing consistently his firing power.
I'm fine with Megatron as tank because it fits as well, but is a far more predictable alt-mode than a gun for him.
Looking at Megatron, the bad guys leader, a big robot with a huge arm cannon, a powerful tank is the first think everyone would think as his transformation: no surprise at all.
