In almost every series, Transformers tend to merge with each other. Is every multi-part Cybertronian a combiner? If not, then what IS a a combiner anyway?

Anybody remember an episode when Optimus Prime and some other autobots disguised themselves as Stunticons, and they were also able to merge into an impostor Menasor.

It was my favorite episode when I was younger, I loved it.
Easiest to describe Combiners, “Individual bots who combine and their shard personalities traits form the personality of the combined mode.” Which is why Devestator is dumb compared to his individual bots, Predaking is a unrelenting killer, and Computron takes forever to compute an answer.
Pretty much the subject of part 2 which is halfway finished.

I would define a combiner as more than one sentient robot that when merged form a single entity that has its own sentience and personality. Thus any character that has drones like Primes roller is not a combiner
This is the purest explanation and the only one that fits most TF story lines in my opinion.
Yeah. Basically, something similar to devestator. I would add that a combiner has between 5 and 6 robots and ideally have them sized like a typical autobot or decepticon
I agree, roller counts as an extension of Optimus just like his trail. Their all the same being like Skylinx. I've heard people veiw headmaster's as combiners. I totally disagree, it's two self aware beings forming a partnership. To me I see combiners as a group of singlings that have a extra special ability to form together to make a stronger and self aware being.

I wonder if Transformers like Prime and Skylinx would be split personalities. I do see the point with the master series. In a way, they are combiners as a second actual robot merges with another. On the other hand, it's either the head, gun, or a power pack of the larger robot. They are also not robots. They are an organic person in a suit that becomes apart of the main robot. With the exception of Fortress Maximus and Scorponoc, the main robot is a Transformer and has a personality. At least in the TV series, these two robots were cities that could transform. They were controlled by an organic person. In the TV series, a Transformer did make up the head of Fortress Maximus, but Spike controlled the body.
Now, in the sense of the masters as combiners, they had to work together. During Season 4 of G1, the head masters and target masters did work together. Sometimes, the main robot did its own thing and the person was there for the ride. In the case of the head masters, the body could not stay in robot mode when the head separates. Target masters have no gun without their person. The big combiners could operate with one missing component as seen with Defensor.

I've never understood why some people are obsessed with seeing the dinobots combine. Part of their mythos is that they're powerful without needing to combine.

so, do they ever combine? i have a vague memory of them being a combiner, but since it didnt mention in the video (or maybe i just miss it) i though my memory just messed up.
@@hendrayudhapratama1027 Yes they do. I just saw it on the video The Basics of Grimlock by Chris McFeely at 11:41 mark. He shows the clip and says which series its in. I was excited because I'm one of those people that has always wanted see it.
Probably because power rangers. The rangers main robot type has always been dinosaurs and they often combine into a near unstoppable robot warrior

Combiners are cool and all, but when there’s like 50 of them they stop being special. There should only be like 4 or 5 of them.

I agree with your concept of combiners, but I think not all transformers should have that ability.
Combiners were a great idea to make the g1 cartoons much more interesting.But from Hasbro's point of view it was a gimmick to sell more toys.The only complete combiner I owned in the mid 80s was bruticus even though I owned the leader/centerpiece to many others like silverbolt,motormaster,hotspot,and razorclaw.so I had a ton of heads,hands and feet because the centerpiece came with all the combiner açcessories.I also hate that I didn't own any contructicons because devastator was my favorite combiner in the g1 cartoon plus he was the only one that utilized 6 regular size figures.

That was a well done, informative episode. As a Transformers fan, I pity any complete newcomer who tries to comprehend all of the many series/iterations/storylines/timelines in the mythos. It's enough to make your head spin!

While it took some time, I have all of them that were released in the G1 series.
I love that when Predaking Merges he actually mass shifts Bigger.
To be honest, the Beast's combining process reminded of John Carpenter's The Thing. One could say the Dinobots in that story actually fused and not really combined making the Beast more of a fusor rather than a combiner.

Combiners are the coolest.
But, as with everything: if it is overdone, it becomes lame. So should every Transformers have this ability? Hell no. That would diminish the awesomeness of the G1 combiners.

That is so much details that you gathered. Not even going to ask how you have possessed so much info on this combiner topic. That was to much info for me. You lost me after G1 Transformers that you mentioned. That sea combiner I never heard of it. Applause for all the work you did on this topic.
I had most of Piranicon but they are all broken and missing pieces now. Some of the post G1 combiners are awesome.
Im with you i didnt know there was so many some i never even heard of and im a transformer fan from back then til now but i wished they wouldve started out the movies like the cartoons kept everything original

Lets just say you have to treat it like a baby
G1 toys were very intricate and detailed. They hadn't yet learned what works and what didn't. This led to kids using their imaginations on action poses. The combining with Devastator would lose how well it stayed together with normal wear and tear on the toy. I'm sure this is why they came up with how they fell apart in fiction.

Ive always called the Drone Combiners as well... "Drone Combiners" or "Singular Combiners" besides that great work and insight as always Primal.
A combiner is when 2 or more Transformers, (each with 3 modes, robot/beast + alt mode/beast + combine mode), merge to create a gestalt entity.
The gestalt entity has its own unique name, its own unique personality, (which is the result of the individual personalities merging), and the gestalt is more powerful than the sum of its parts.
Sky Lynx is not a combiner because he is 1 mind, 1 personality, that is shared between 2 bodies.
Reflector is not a combiner because the 3 bots only have 2 modes, and there is no evidence of their minds merging.
On the subject of combiners, do you have any idea as to how Optimus Prime knew the exact weak spot to Devastator that then made him split up in to his sextet constructicon components? I'm guessing Teletraan 1 did a technical analysis. Its funny this has never been touched upon again in any media or nobody has never questioned it, regardless if the answer was obviously Teletraan 1.

I loved the combiners when I was a kid watching G1. They were really well animated, shame the toys couldn't match the look and range of movements shown in the animated series but that just meant I had to use my imagination to fill it in when playing with them. I had a devastator set as a kid and it was really delicate. Too much for the sort of rough and tumble play that kids would subject it to. But in the animation it was good that they gave the combiners a weakness that would see them fall apart when hit in the right spot as that was useful for kids playing with a combiner as it worked well with the delicate bonds between the combiners. It's funny how I remember playing with transformers made me feel more like a director than anything as I was in my mind scripting the action in line with the rules set out by the show so there had to be a reason for conflict (couldn't just be I feel like shooting up some deceptions today, hur hur hur), characters couldn't swap factions at will without some sort of logical explanation and any crossovers with other toys would need some sort of logical explanation too. In fact the more that I recall this, the more that I realize that this is probably one big reason why folks who grew up watching G1 absolutely despise bayformers (for the most part). When I watched revenge of the fallen and saw that garbage heap that Bay passed off as devastator my reaction was the same as how my younger self would have reacted if some cynical jackass had glued some trash together and tried to pass it off as devastator when playing transformers.

Thanks for the information, I've always wanted to know more about gestalts. And I think that the constructions should be rivals of the aerialbots. Since superion and devastator make good rivals.

I've been coming up with combiner teams for over 25 years! Many inspired by Power Rangers Zord formations! With some additions that have the teams consist of 9 instead of 5 members. Sometimes the zords' names are good enough for the Autobot name, too! Like Thunder Loader, Star Racer, Pyro Rescue & Med Rescue.
Am I the only one who realized he forgot about Safegard? Aka Jetfire and Jetstorm from Transformers Animated? 🤔 I love those bois XD.
Also forgot about Omega Prime from Transformers RID.

As a G1 fanboy, I'm a bit opposed to the Dinobots being combiners etc., but now that I have the PotP figs, I can't help but love how well they pulled off Volcanicus. Guess that's another vid
I agree, they are a bit unstable and uncontrollable as individuals, I can't imagine combining all five of their personalities together, even if their combined body would likely be unstopplable.

Cool video. Most of those "combiners" came after my time but it looks like they got carried away and a bit lame. The real combiners were the teams and not the mix of any/everyone. Decepticons had the coolest; Predaking, Bruticus, and gotta show love to the original Devastator. Those "power-up duo" types are not combiners at all. From all the sets shown it looks like they were trying to milk the idea pretty badly and looks like they were losing their cool factor.

Yes, but it depends. If they merge in both body AND mind (even if slightly broken like Menasor) then its a combiner. The Powerlink of Energon is a gray area I may cover next time.

The Combaticons are my favorite. So far I've only collected 3 of them, Vortex, Swindle and Blast Off. I still need Onslaught and Brawl.
I hear ya. I've had every Protectobot except Groove for years. But even if I get him or a replacement I don't have any of the hardware that came with them.

Awesome and informative video, and no I don't think all Transformers should be able to combine, cause if they could the series should just be called Voltron. lol
As for what I consider a combiner, I guess it would be a larger robot made by two or more separate robots, and for me they would also have to have a different head in the combined form, so the Powerlink bots from Energon would not count, nor would Optimus using Jetfire's body from ROTF.

this is very thorough and a great analysis too. I've been a fan since their start, but even I wasn't aware of all these combiner robots and their variations. Well done here. I would say the need for a combiner really came out of the smashing success of guys like Voltron which came out in 1984, which sort of passed up the interest of any single transforming robot. So I would say that mold set the quintessence of the genre, and from there lesser versions of that theme popped up like super versions, and double robot modes, etc. These cartoons basically set the mold of what a fantastic cartoon should look like for the rest of time.
Combiners should be a team, with a theme, with alt modes that merge into one entity........the rest should be called “Link Mode” transformers if they can merge with anyone

in g1 besides the ones in the g1 cartoon there's piranhacon (seacon combiner), monstructor (pretender monsters combiner), raiden (trainbots combiner), dinoking (dinoforce combiner), and many more.

This is a great video! Oh man, combiners are awesome! I have Devastator, Superion, Menasor, Defensor and Bruticus, but my Defensor doesn't have all his comininer armor parts, just the hands and feet.
Those teams are definitely combiners. Drone commanders aren't, and others helping Optimus get a rocket pack or cannons etc is just teaming up to assist Optimus, not a combiner, per se. No not all Transformers should have this ability.

For me Combiners/Ghestalts only 'count' as such instead of 'multi-part units' if each part could function as its own unit with its own alt mode. So units like skylinx or that one dinobot with drones don't count because they simply have added parts (ditto omega suprime.)
That camera doens't count because all of the parts seem to be a group mind that happen to form parts of an alt mode instead of each functioning as their own person.

Who is your favorite combiner? Mine are Devastator and Menasor.
Anyway, my take on combiners is the definition and bias shown to them in recent toons and books. One of the few modern concepts I enjoy. it makes sense to fear the merging of autonomous robotic organisms. Machines without consciousness would be no big deal to merge. However, they have individualism feared to be lost and corrupted by merging. A "sickness" of wanting to combine into a greater whole. Bloody brilliant.

Ok, first I love this video, but this is a topic I am a bit...passionate about, so I apologize in advance if I come off hot blooded or rude, and also if I get long winded. The problem is the difference between combining and merging. In the G1 series, the term combinatics was created and referred to the Gestalt Combiners: Devastator, the Scramble City Combiners, and so on. These teams MERGED into not only a single machine but a single individual mind. Therefore the Combiners are machines with their own unique minds. Optimus, Reflector, and the city or otherwise giant Transformers were single minds that could control forms composed of multiple parts or smaller machines. By this definition, they are NOT Combiners. In the case of the Masters (Head, Target, and Power), these are what I like to call the first example of Power Linking (yes, that is referencing the Mini-Cons of Armada AND the Aubotbot combos in Energon). With Power Linking, one being combines with another physically but not necessarily mentally, and one being is clearly dominate over the other. The Head Masters of the cartoon worked WITH their Transformer partners, they didn't MERGE to become a new single mind. The Mini-Cons of Armada were often forced to bond with other Transformers, whether directly or out of necessity, and had little to no say as to how their powers were used. Even the Star Saber, Skyboom Shield, and Requiem Blaster, each composed of a team would answer to the one holding them usually, regardless of their own feelings. The Autobot combos of Energon likewise had one Autobot bolstering the power of another, but the combo was not a merging into a single being, one was clearly shown mentally dominate. With this in mind, it is difficult to call the combined Transformers of Animated true Combiners. Despite their various combination, many times it appears that the component Transformers are simply working together, and are not a combined mentality. However, I am sure other people have their own interpretations and I would like to hear them, so please let me know what you think.
I for the most part agree. Though, the Mini-Cons of Armada merging did so with a single mind of being used by whomever holds them still constitutes a Combiner, but Powerlinking to an Autobot or Decepticon does not count. I kind of agree with you on the Energon bit though it is a gray area there. My next video will talk about the gestalt mind in addition so I am doing research for it now.
I'm glad we agree, and that I wasn't too much of a jerk about it. This is a topic that I have strong feeling about, and sometimes I come off far more opinionated than I mean to. If I may suggest some things for your next video, the gestalt one, I have some data about some of them you may wish to use or perhaps verify. First, about the Seacons and their combined form Piranhacon (hope that's spelled right, too tired to go look at my old notes). According to the Marvel comics that had bios about the Transformers, every one of the components could assume not only arm or leg form, but that each one also became a different weapon for the gestalt to wield. Second, Piranhacon is not the only Target Master gestalt. When the Action Masters were first released, there was a normal size Devastator figure among them. I remember reading somewhere online that after becoming Action Master, the Constructicons found that they could no longer form Devastator so were actually building an Action Master clone of him, which would help explain the figure. Its been so long that I have forgotten where I read that so you may wish to verify that. Btw, when were the Action Masters renamed or reclassified as Target Masters, and does that include the ones with vehicles.
Oh, one last question, where did you get that pic of the four gestalts with the mixed up components shaking hands? I want to get a copy so I can use on my desktop! lol

I'd say for a transformer to be considered a combiner the combine form must have its own identity seperate from the individuals used to make up the combiner body. Rather than a single speaking transformer with four drones.
And to answer the question about if all transformers should have the ability to combine: no. I've always viewed combiners as a specialised team of a collective theme such as Bruticus being comprised of military vehicles, Defensor of first response vehicles, Devastator of construction vehicles and Superion of air vehicles. Having a large amount of transformers having the ability to combine just seems like it'd just be a pointless power up move to help shift the tide of battle.
This was well done. Very informative. For me I stopped watching TF after G1 Season 4 with the Targetmasters and Headmasters. I feel Hasbro has gotten in the way of great lore and storytelling trying to sell toys and ends up ruining great concepts by overdoing them in the name of sales. I also wish the U.S. and Japanese storytelling cannon were more consistent. It seems like we missed out on a lot of cool stories and characters never introduced in the U.S. and Canada. That was a missed opportunity for them. Also them not following the original comic book lore or taking bits and pieces from it made things a bit confusing. Marvel Productions and Hasbro had so much more they could have done after Optimus Prime’s return at the end of G1 Season 3. Keep up the great work!

According to the G1 cartoon, It is pronounced “Hun g-ARE” not “ Hunger”
I do not believe it’s for fans to say what can be considered a combiner, if Hasbro says something is a combiner and labels the item a combiner then it is a combiner, and apparently that includes nameless drones
I cannot believe you completely forgot the micro master combiners, two robots that would form a single vehicle… Which in my opinion is very similar to reflector, So if the MM combiners were considered combiners by Hasbro I cannot see why reflector would not be
And if the mini cons that form weapons or Shields Canby call combiners then again I do not see a logical argument against reflector
And in my opinion anything that utilizes combiner technology and is formed by separate characters then it should be called a combiner
I think the real issue here is that combiner is confused with Gestalt

I'm about to mention a team that has only appeared in a japanese sequel to g1...the 6 trainbots the actual rival to the constructions
They merge into Raiden. I'd love to see them get updated and not just their announced MPs.
What about omega prime when ultra magnus and optimus prime combine in Transformers robots in disguise 2011 are they considered a combiner
When I look at the later versions of the combiners... I begin to see where the Bayformers came from.

So Rodimus I'm not sure if there is an answer to this but how did the Combaticons went from WW2 vehicles into post war vehicles? Like brawl went from a Sherman tank into "According to the wiki" a Leopard 1
I think Starscream had something to do with it.
In the episode, they just morphed into the new versions, but to give a techno babble response, the forms could have been loaded into the memory of the modified vehicles so that when the "sparks" , for lack of a better term, were loaded in they were morphed into a new form, much the same way Rodimus got a trailer when he got the matrix or when Optimus Primal became Optimal Optimus with the matrix, just not as powerful
Didn't you know Primal, according to Ask Vector Sigma, that...unmentionable thing's universe/timeline was consumed by Unicron...it doesn't exist anymore...technically it never did.

It seems to me that the whole combiner idea was maybe over used a bit. When new teams are constantly being made,it makes the whole idea less special. I don't think all transformers should have this ability,wasn't this something that was done recently where autobots that weren't normally part of a combiner team were made a combiner?
Pretty much with the Prime Wars Trilogy, they made almost EVERYONE a combiner. I agree, and it might be something the next video will cover.
