Here’s my view on it. It was kinda cute in the first few movies (ignoring the inconsistency with the ending of the first film) and it worked in Prime, because it created and interesting dynamic between the team, with Ratchet feeling guilty about not being able to fix it, Smokescreen not understanding why it still bothered Bumblebee, and him not being able to communicate with most of the humans, and the buzzing wasn’t annoying. I personally like the Mute Bee, I understand that he should have his voice back and I'm totally fine with that. However, him being mute gives him a sort of quirk. So we could empathize with him They probably also thought that it'll give him a sort of r2d2 appeal with him mostly going for high pitched boop beep sounds. But yes, at the end of the day, I'm fine and happy whether or not he has voice.
Anyway they ended up bringing Frank back for TF4 and 5. And even thought Galvatron and Megatron were totally wasted characters, at least Frank did a good job with what they gave him
Should *Bumblebee always lose his voice? No. It's an annoying trope that only kind of worked well once, and when it did, it wasn't even in a Transformers movie.
Bumblebee losing his voice has been done to death, as have the jokes around it. And it was only done decently three times: Prime utilized it much better than the movie that spawned it, but other than some communication issues didn't use it to handicap the character much. And when he DID get his voice back, it was epic. Cyberverse treating it as an effect of his amnesia and a bit of PTSD. The Bumblebee movie 1) actually showed how it happened as part of his backstory and 2) used it better story wise and humor wise (communication misunderstandings) and used it to help the bonding between him and Charlie. PS: Ratchet making entirely meta jokes about it happening AGAIN in Fall of Cybertron is funny as heck, but that's about as far as the jokes need to go. Hasbro needs to stop falling back on this quirk just because they can.

I grew up with g1 and prime but I always preferred his beeping, it was endearing and a pleasant juxtaposition to his warrior-like appearance (in his recent adaptations). But I do think it’s a shame that mute Bee is seemingly canon now.
I prefer Bumblebee having a voice. I actually remember I wrote a fan script at one point, which had a scene where Bumblebee's voice box was damaged by Circuit Breaker, only to heal later on. Just a subtle nod, while maintaining the classic motif. Also, in that screenplay, I made it a point not to put him in the heat of combat like the other movies. He does provide some support in fights, and defends himself when attacked, but he's a scout first and foremost
Yes, he looks like Prowl, and "the Streaks", but also his personslity in the movies I think is more like Sideswipe's, who also had a Camaro altmode in 2001, and also he had really similar head with the round eyes with the visor-like parts, those sideparts with the vents, the faceplate, the horns, and that middle part on the top of his head(Silverstreak also had that form), and that whole talking through radio thing was used for Wreck-Gar originally, as well as those spiky wheel thingies he had in tf4.Also, he's too big.But he's yellow at least, so there's that.
I'm kind of half and half on that. I like Optimus with his face plate, but I like what they did in Prime, too. I like the idea that he can retract it when he wants to. I liked seeing more expression on his face. I just don't like the way they did it in the live action films. He frowned too much.
@@nickzilla20 A little bit yeah. Maybe they just need the right kind of design for him...not that I could find it. I'm barely a passable artist myself but mecha of that sort are soooo hard to draw! I've been struggling bad. Straight lines are my enemy! That aside . . . I wonder if for those who prefer the mask be permanent there could be a compromise. Optimus's battle mask isn't permanent, but what if he had some kind of disfiguring injury that made him uncomfortable showing his face, so he keeps it on? Or maybe it's an outward sign of his grief when he thought he lost Elita? It could even be a mix of both? Either way, there has to be a way. The artistry and technology of today is so incredible. I'm sure they could figure something out.
I still kind of want that Last Knight Sequel as a Final Bay Universe Movie where Bumblebee keeps his voice that he gets back for the final battle against Quintessa & Unicron. Also I want the crappy Bumblebee movie to be the prequel to the 2007 movie. We don't need another movie universe where he loses his voice.
I grew up with the Michael Bay movies and mute Bumblebee, so at first I was so used to him with a voice hearing him with one was weird to me. But after rewatching the g1 show I like him a lot more with a voice.
Paty O’s - And that’s largely because there was an actual arc to the concept (same as in “Bumblebee”) instead of “wouldn’t it be funny if he used random pop songs to talk?” And the ending, where he gets his voice back was done so beautifully.
Great video for discussion, but it's a simple answer. No. It was a bad idea then and it's a bad idea now. The whole Wreck Gar-esque radio voice worked well for a quirky Junkion...but not at all for a main character
Now that Knightverse is a reboot, they really outta fix the voice box to distance itself from Bayverse. We saw Blitzwing rip it off and throw it on the side of the mountain. So let's say Sector 7 picked it up and have the Autobots get it back. Ratchet can adjust it back and boom, voice is back!
I want the Sequel to Last Knight to still happen & have Bumblebee with his voice participate in the final battle against Quintessa & Unicron! Let the crappy Bumblebee Movie be a prequel to the flawed Bayverse rather than the start of what will probably be a worse movieverse than Bay directed! We don't need a 2nd Movie Universe where Bumblebee loses his voice!
Caye Daws "does it work as a continuing storyline?" "Yes" "Does it have a large array of characters at its disposal, a lot of which barely see the light of day?" "Yes" "Is it a recognizable brand that can also have entertaining action?" "Yes" "Then it can be a cinematic universe." Unfortunately only two transformers movies so far have been made with the purpose of being in an extended universe (TLK and BB) and neither have had sequels yet. Otherwise every other film has been made with the purpose of just being its own film, except for DOTM which was intended to be a complete conclusion to a movie trilogy. This is why Megatron keeps coming back from the dead only to be a secondary villain.
Godzilla guy 54 while you're at it give my autistic brother a voice too. Give me and my social anxiety ridden, Aspergers ass the ability to talk to people and make friends IRL. Give Beethoven the ability to hear back, Lance Armstrong his testicle so he can have children, go back in time and make Steven Hawking not paralyzed so he can live a normal life and not have lived it in a wheelchair with an artificial voice. Wait, what do you mean it doesn't work like that? Disabilities don't just go away? Damn, you got my hopes up dude.
I didn't mind him not having his voice in the '07 movie, especially since he got it back in the end. Him not having his voice for long periods of times literately doesn't make sense. They can repair most damage, but not the voice box. Doesn't make sense. All versions of bumblebee should have their voice
@023 Studios TF Prime isn't a sequel to the live action movie. And he did get his voice back right before killing Megatron. And having a biological mechanism doesn't make sense. Just saying its too advanced just means lazy writing, understandable for a show for kids whose primary purpose is to sell toys, but still lazy
I feel like it's a matter of what they do with it and actually letting him have his voice once he gets it back. His muteness affects multiple relationships in Prime, and it does have story consequences. When he finally speaks and doesn't even realize it is such a perfect moment; it shows that he was talking the whole time he just couldn't be understood. It really works because he kept his voice through the movie and the next series. When his muteness is just the background for a joke or it doesn't actually affect any of the characters, then it feels like a crutch to avoid giving him more personality.
Omega Maximus I have to disagree with you, I like how Bumblebee has to convey complex emotion with his facial experience instead of his voice in the Movies like the other Transformers, The whole talking though the radio thing is really cool and interesting I never seen it done before, 🐝 Thank you for reading.🙏
I like how in the fall of cybertron video game on the first mission wen u play as bumblebee, when ratchet is checking him over he says "his voice chip is still crushed, nothing new there then" a subtle nod to the 2007 movie
I related to Bumblebee so much as a kid, he was a witty smart ass that often messed things up but he learned from his mistakes and eventually respected the wisdom of his fellow more experienced autobots. His voice was a big part of the character. The radio talk is clever and fun but it shouldn't define who he is, get on it Rachet!
I agree, I want ‘Bee to speak again. Off topic, why did Bay think Welker wasn’t a good choice for Megatron? He IS Megatron in my books! The clip of him speaking Weaving’s line in the first film sounds perfectly fine. Gah! I’ll never understand that man. Bay I mean, not Frank Welker.
Honestly I was marginal on the original G1 Bumblebee but the character grew on me! I think the Bee needs his voice not a radio & if they're so bent on using radio speak, let us be reintroduced to the Junkions. As to why Welker wasn't used 1st in the Bayverse (aside from them being misinformed) was 2 fold: the star power of Weaving & supposedly Welker's voice hadn't aged well. And my reply to that Mr. Bay is, your franchise hasn't aged well!
RodimusPrimal oh okay, so what other transformer characters that we see often have disabilities, specifically non verbal? Pray tell so when Bumblebee gets his voice back for forever I can introduce my non verbal brother to a new character to relate to so his heart won't be broken and his dreams crushed.
Well sorry that non verbal people can't just talk themselves and that Bay realized how important the non verbal Bumblebee was to the kids who could relate. Have fun in that special place in hell reserved for you.
Nexus8846 Productions you bring up a good point and I personally do like this aspect of Bumblebee losing his voice but I don’t think that Bay really cared about representing those who have difficulty speaking, I think it could have just been a voice casting issue or a marketing ploy, and while I do apologise if this is offensive to you I don’t think that we should be telling people to go to hell over it but that’s just my take thanks for reading
@@NexusProductions-rz1sv I'm 99,9% he didnt realized that Rodimus Primal even explained in the Video that he wanst supposed to speak at all in the start Seriously are we really discussing about Mute people from Real Life and an Alien Autonomous Robotic Organism that didnt speak!?
Bumblebee is my absolute favorite Transformer next to Optimus Prime. That's one of the problems I had with the Bay movie when he wasn't his Volkswagen bug self and when he couldn't speak.
I've always loved the first Bumblebee and the way he was in the original cartoon I just can't accept much after that, I do not understand why it is so important to change or reboot or destroy the things we enjoyed
Scottlen Miller woah woah woah! Destory!? You mean I can't go into my closet and pull out all my G1 cartoon DVDs and watch them because the big mean ole Mike has completely destroyed any remains of it on earth!? Oh wait no, they're still there, able to be watched and enjoyed any time I please to do so. From the beginning all the way to the end of the cartoon. That's how it seems to be for all transformers shows in fact, as each new show has a new version of the characters as the old one has concluded and it doesn't make sense to just repeat the same story or constantly add new characters that are different from the old ones, yet still so similar that they're just almost the same. It's also not like I absolutely have to watch Transformers content that has done something to the characters that I don't like or disagree with. So uh... what's the problem?
I prefer him silent. For the most part him loosing his voice is a part of his character development: the cocky kid loosing something so important to him and then learning how to live life without it while becoming a better person in general
U should do a video about the live action movies having more G1 based designs. I personally LOVED that change they made for the bumblebee movie I mean I ACTUALLY RECOGNIZED a lot of the bots in that opening sequence on cybertron EDIT: OMG Rhodimus Primal likes my comment EDIT 2: that was a fanboy joke to everyone who didn’t get it, or just everyone, I’ve got a weird sense of humor
I hate that weird mute/beeping/radio trend that's been going on. Stop making him mute in 70% mute in everything he is in. The R2-D2 beeping in the Prime series was really annoying. I prefer bumblebee voiced by a actor...not by radio.
@@loremipsum2237 I don't dislike G1 Bumblebee, but in all honesty, (Nobody hate me for this please) versions of Bumblebee today are more memorable. He has more personality. Way more personality in Animated.
I wanna say no, because while it is a REALLY good concept to show how much the war can physically and mentally scar a character. I do think that this shouldn't be Bumblebee's constant character trait, especially since the idea of Bumblebee not having a voice came from the 2007 Transformer's movie and has pretty much stayed since. Which again, isn't a bad concept it works, especially with how well it was written in his character in TFP and Bumblebee (2018). But at this point I think that Bumblebee being voice impaired/mute should really only be done if it affects the overall story and helps him grow as a character. But at the same time try to avoid overusing the same idea because by that point it becomes overuse and stale. I think there should be future shows, games, movies that do feature a mute Bumblebee just as much as a verbal Bumblebee. There should be a balance between the two as long as the execution is done right.
this is kind of a hot take, but i prefer the radio voice. it gives him a lot more character and personality imo. but i’m ngl and say i don’t want him to speak ever again
Nope, he needs a voice. It was okay at first in the one Bay movie, after that it was just ridiculous. Even then, it was kind of silly since it probably would have been an easy enough fix. 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️ so, just give him back his dang voice!!!! Enough is enough!
Bumblebee movie: everyone looks like they did in G1! Also Bumblebee movie: "not you, Bumblebee" Everyone: "This is your fault, Starscream-" I mean... Blitzwing.

I personally like the Mute Bee, I understand that he should have his voice back and I'm totally fine with that. However, him being mute gives him a sort of quirk. So we could empathize with him
They probably also thought that it'll give him a sort of r2d2 appeal with him mostly going for high pitched boop beep sounds. But yes, at the end of the day, I'm fine and happy whether or not he has voice.

Bumblebee losing his voice has been done to death, as have the jokes around it. And it was only done decently three times:
Prime utilized it much better than the movie that spawned it, but other than some communication issues didn't use it to handicap the character much.

I grew up with the live actions so bumble bee being mute seems right to me
same with me except i grew up with tfp
I always hated the non talking Bumblebee. Dan Gilvezan needs to come back and voice him.
I agree.
"But a trend started in the first live-action Transformers movie needs to be put to an end."
Amen, brother, amen.

Or constantly having is face mask off. It works fine for beast wars and prime, but for some reason in the movies it looks weird.
Honestly the Michael Bay made sense with the robot bits hanging off, he's a giant robot that folds in to a car. Everything falls into place.

Omar Harris it was only good in transformers prime
Paty O’s and bumblebee
023 Studios - I mean the joke of him losing his voice and then using a bunch of random, pop culture sound bites on his radio to compensate.
Paty O’s - And that’s largely because there was an actual arc to the concept (same as in “Bumblebee”) instead of “wouldn’t it be funny if he used random pop songs to talk?” And the ending, where he gets his voice back was done so beautifully.
First film was a joke.
Great video for discussion, but it's a simple answer. No. It was a bad idea then and it's a bad idea now. The whole Wreck Gar-esque radio voice worked well for a quirky Junkion...but not at all for a main character
Bumblebee deserves to have a say in things. Literally. Seriously I love his voice lol
The Bay TF film turned him into a baby: big round eyes, pacifier in his mouth, can't speak, smaller than the other Autobots.
He could take blitzwing's voice box since he was blown to pieces
@023 Studios Just throwing it out there
I want the Sequel to Last Knight to still happen & have Bumblebee with his voice participate in the final battle against Quintessa & Unicron! Let the crappy Bumblebee Movie be a prequel to the flawed Bayverse rather than the start of what will probably be a worse movieverse than Bay directed! We don't need a 2nd Movie Universe where Bumblebee loses his voice!
Why does it have to be a "cinematic universe"? I don't think transformers really works well as movies.
Caye Daws "does it work as a continuing storyline?"
"Yes"
"Does it have a large array of characters at its disposal, a lot of which barely see the light of day?"
"Yes"
"Is it a recognizable brand that can also have entertaining action?"
"Yes"
"Then it can be a cinematic universe."
Unfortunately only two transformers movies so far have been made with the purpose of being in an extended universe (TLK and BB) and neither have had sequels yet. Otherwise every other film has been made with the purpose of just being its own film, except for DOTM which was intended to be a complete conclusion to a movie trilogy. This is why Megatron keeps coming back from the dead only to be a secondary villain.

Michael Bay made him lose his voice again in ROTF only looking at it in terms of Marketing and not Stoey unfortunately.
Baybee's face looks like he has a pacifier lol
I feel like it's a matter of what they do with it and actually letting him have his voice once he gets it back. His muteness affects multiple relationships in Prime, and it does have story consequences. When he finally speaks and doesn't even realize it is such a perfect moment; it shows that he was talking the whole time he just couldn't be understood. It really works because he kept his voice through the movie and the next series. When his muteness is just the background for a joke or it doesn't actually affect any of the characters, then it feels like a crutch to avoid giving him more personality.
I am so sick of Bumblebee losing his voice, this needs to stop now.

Off topic, why did Bay think Welker wasn’t a good choice for Megatron? He IS Megatron in my books! The clip of him speaking Weaving’s line in the first film sounds perfectly fine. Gah! I’ll never understand that man. Bay I mean, not Frank Welker.
When I first saw that clip with Welker over movie Megatron years ago, it made me SO MAD at Bay.
The radio talk can be hilarious, so it should be a mix. He has lost his voice for so long, he doesn't have the words at times.
0:39 Bumblebee is actually saying "I can never speak for some reason. It is completely ridiculous and needs to end."
I prefer him silent. For the most part him loosing his voice is a part of his character development: the cocky kid loosing something so important to him and then learning how to live life without it while becoming a better person in general

Bumblebee can't be silent forever.
Kevin Ramirez but my brother sure is forced to be
I wanna say no, because while it is a REALLY good concept to show how much the war can physically and mentally scar a character.
