  • Formula 1 as a championship takes in a huge amount of money which then gets shared amongst the teams. But how is that prize money shared and why do Ferrari still get the biggest share of the prize pot?

      Companies only objective is revenue, no revenue from thing X, they won't do said thing.
      That 50mil is an incentive to not leave F1 even if they don't win.
      +Ferrari is still the most popular, the most successful and the oldest F1 team on the grid.

    So Ferrari gets over $50 million just for showing up, which is a significant portion of the cost cap. They also are the only team with veto power. I have to wonder how they don't consistently win championships with such a crazy advantage.

      They used the spend 500 million so it has nothing to do with the cost cap and even before it it’s nothing compared the funds the massive funds of Mercedes as the top 5 largest car companies.
      It really has no impact on the championship and just helps to ensure Ferrari never considers leaving, and recognizes them as the most historic and culturally valuable team.

    F1 generates 2.5B€ in 2021 and recently got evaluated for 20B and FIA president said it's not the valuable on his official Office account and F1 has sent out a letter to FIA for this action

    They should share the money equally/more equal, they can still compete using sponsorships who surely would prefer putting their money on a winning team, this way, the backmarker get more chance and people will love it more, who doesn't love haas starting at a pole position last year?     Historical significance... Doesnt matter if you are literally the team with the worst decision making and strategy, with 2 very talented drivers that get a car that basically recieves no upgrades throught the season, you sacrifice the drivers championship of your LEAD driver just to not hurt the feelings of your second driver and make a complete joke of yourself ,you still get a special prize cause why not...

    As unfair as that money seems for Ferrari getting it simply for existing, the fact they are in F1 brings in so much more cash to F1 that it absolutely dwarfs that 50 million $ sum that they are getting.
    So basically F1 is paying Ferrari for marketing

    I really think Williams should receive ‘historic’ status too. Okay it’s not as old but it’s the only grass routes team still in f1, one of the most successful and could really do with some extra cash

      It's called historic status bonus, but in reality it should be called fan base bonus.
      Ferrari fans make almost half of F1 fanbase, Williams idk, maybe not even 5%?
      That's the real reason why they get the bonus, because F1 get way more profit from Ferrari than those 50 millions they pay them.

    The Top 3 & Title Winning bonuses need to go BACK into the prize fund. This is part of the reason why those on top have stayed on top for so long. Luckily we have the budget cap now. Fairer fight

      Yeah THATS why the teams with the best staff, equipment and processes are always on top. Some prize money. Sure maybe back in the day that compromised most of a teams budget but seriously. All the fame and exposure of winning alongside the best sponsorship opportunities available also play a huge part. And let’s not forget all of the most successful teams in the modern era also have huge companies behind them to bolster the budget if needed, along with providing facilities and expertise etc etc.

    So basically, when a team wins it earns money twice for that : the year they win and they keep earning for years to come.
    It may be the most fair split F1 ever had, but still seems a bit unfair to me. I wish the system would tend to what American sports have with the draft system : if you win, you have less of a bonus since you’re the one that need it the least.

      It screwed up f1 by putting it in the hands of liberty, who now get more money than all the teams combined from all the teams hard work. The teams rightfully should own the commercial rights and should be paying maybe 10% to a marketing/promo team to run the series. Bernie should be in jail.

    I guess most of the commenters started watching recently especially after watching DTS. At one point F1 was synonymous with Ferrari. They deserved that, if big team like Mercedes or Red Bull don't have any issue over loyalty then why should F1 take your comments. Ferrari is the only factory team since the beginning, no other team being closed to them. McLaren or Williams are 2 legacy teams but they are not a factory team. At this point Ferrari is more like a legendary legacy team than anything else.

    To be fair, Ferrari fans make up a significant portion of F1 views. F1 knows they need Ferrari on board, more than any other team, so they redistribute a fraction of the amount they gain in recognition of that. Except they can't call it "fan-service revenue" or "tifosi benefits", so they hide under the "historical significance" thing, even though many other teams can boast lineage

      Many teams can boast lineage, but not to the extent of Ferrari. Taking into consideration the entire existence of Formula 1, Ferrari is undeniably the single most important and successful team in the sport.

    The legacy payment is bullshit. And so is the top 3 payment. It’s just another way for the wealthier teams to keep their advantage. Should be dissolved or reallocated to a bankruptcy fund. Idk, just seems wrong to me.
    Maybe they could use the extra money to add teams to the grid. F1 is very closed off these days. While it is understandable that we can’t have teams coming and going like it’s 1975, it would be nice to see more teams taking part.

      The other teams, the ones that existed at the time anyway, agreed to it. All the teams that joined since the agreement then also agreed to it in order to join.
      Im not even a Ferarri fan but I don't see any issue with giving the only legacy team left in F1 a little extra for their loyalty and longevity.

      Ever seen half track covered in red by the fanbase? No? Probably you are one of the new fans bringed in by that fake show of drive to survive.
      Older F1 fans knows what Ferrari means to F1, and what F1 means to Ferrari.
      Keep in mind if Ferrari wanna leave probably it will create is own championship and many if not all of the current F1 teams will join them... Ever heard of GP1 project??
      And to be fair that project made by F1 teams and Ferrari was probably the biggest ideator of that series was more fair to every team compared to actual F1.
      So even considering Ferrari has unfair behaviour it's completely non sense.
      You and everyone who thinks if Ferrari leave, F1 will survive, must study a lot more of F1 history.

    People need to understand. For non F1 fanatics, Ferrari is F1 and F1 is Ferrari. Thats how synonymous they are. And History shows the same thing. They deserve that special money

    I think prize money should be fixed to curb greediness of existing teams (not allowing new teams to join). For example, if the cost cap was at 130M, team in the last place would get 130-135M, but all the teams above would get +5 per position.
    This would curb risk of bankruptcy and greediness.

      @@abrasive_ideas reverse pay is awful for obvious reasons, teams already get a fine for every point they score. Equal pay is unaffordable unless you lower the pay quote a bit. But sponsors, investors and team owners won’t find it worth it then. Obviously team owners are also in it for the money… in what sport is that not the case
