    This is my favorite The Cars song, but you'll learn as you do more that this song is quite different than many of their other songs. This one Benjamin Orr is singing which he didn't do as many songs as Ric Ocasek did as vocalist for The Cars
    Recommend other songs by them - Just What I Needed, Moving in Stereo, Good Times Roll, Magic, Lets Go, My Best Friend's Girl, You're All I've Got Tonight

      The stats about who did the vocals show that Ben did half of the Cars material, as Ric stated , if the song was good i sang it, if it was a great song Ben sung it. What separates the HeartBeat City album is that it has a big name producer at the helm in John Mutt Lange , you can hear shades of the album in Shania Twains 'That Dont Impress Me much' . The Cars debut album is the real deal, probaby one of the greatest debut albums ever made. That said HeartBeat City is a great album.

      @lucitonstjames3925 great post - you nailed it.
      It usually was about 4 songs for Ben per Album but man they usually stole the show.

Plus it was a different Producer. Would be interesting to see what Heartbeat City would have delivered under the old producer.

    Great song and a massive hit. This is as "soft rock" as the Cars get. Most of their stuff is quicker and more energetic. If you want to hear their signature sound, the sound that was so different from anything else on the radio in the late 1970s and help to usher in New Wave, I recommend some listening from their first album, which is one of the most outstanding debut albums of the classic rock era. "Let the Good Times Roll", "My Best Friend's Girlfriend", "Bye, Bye, Love", "You're Just What I Needed", are all great choices. And when you think you have a feel for their music and are ready for some hardcore New Wave magic, listen to "Moving in Stereo / All Mixed Up". (These songs were intentionally run together on the album and are typically listened to as if they are one big song.) Pure fire!

Check out "Magic" and "You Might Think" (and especially the video of You Might think) off the same album sung by the late great Rick Ocasek. That will give you a feel for the uniqueness people are telling you about. And let me add: I always took this song as the narrator of the song is saying this to a woman who is in a bad relationship with another man. The narrator is asking to drive her home, but in a way, he's also asking her to leave the other man and start a new relationship with him (the narrator).

But this is their biggest hit because they really wanted to show that they had more range so they did this to actually prove that they could make a more serious song versus their previous songs that were poppy and light.

    The Cars' first album (titled just The Cars) was one of those perfect albums where you never wanted to skip a track while listening. The song you just reacted to was much slower than their usual tempo, but they are Synth Pop Rock with a touch of some other genres like Rockabilly, which is evidenced by Easton's guitar solos. As others have said, tracks like Just What I Needed, Moving in Stereo, Good Times Roll, Magic, Lets Go, My Best Friend's Girl, You're All I've Got Tonight are great, but Shake It Up and Magic are also great songs for you guys to listen to.
    I'd like to add that while being an awesome album band, The Cars were one of the worst bands I ever saw in concert. I saw them in 1979 and they sounded just like the album. Unfortunately, they also looked just like the album. They just stood there stagnant and played.

    Reactors keep saying the "sound of the 70s and 80s. The 70s and 80s had many sounds that is what made that period so great and unique so stop saying that

    • @joshhernandez6974
      @joshhernandez6974 4 місяці тому

      True but they are probably referring to the synthesizer sound of the 80s. Songs like “living on video” by Trans X is an example and also Two of Hearts by Stacey Q are definitely 80s. That synth music was all over the cartoons we used to watch. Listen to the masterpiece intro song from the cartoon Wheel warriors. That’s definitely 80s sound
      Now that said it’s true people tend to call all music styles “80s music” and thats wrong for sure but there is a certain amount of songs that people are going to immediately associate with the 80s such as hair metal songs for example

    Excellent song to start your Cars journey. One of the great deep cuts of a great band. You'll be swamped with Just What I Needed and You Might Think, but this lesser-known style that permeates their albums, you should also be aware of. The Cars were huge and have so many great songs. A distinct sound, there was never a question of what group you were listening to.

    • @flerbus

      Deep Cut? ...it was their most popular song?
      Went to number 3 on the billboard charts
      Was a top 10 hit in a dozen countries
      None of their songs charted higher

      @markhodge7 5 місяців тому +1

      @@flerbus I was surprised by that fact myself while reading the comments. I bought all their albums when released. I simply remember that this song didn't get the most airplay of Cars songs as many of the more poppy songs were. I'm glad they did this one first.

    The Cars an important group. New wave. Two lead singers (Orr and Ocasek).
    As for the somewhat sharp break between 70s and 80s sounds, I always interpreted it as more commercial influence in production, wanting to make everything sound the same, which to higher ups is the sound of money. As in, "Can you make this song sound like that other successful song?"

    • @leroyrs
      @leroyrs 5 місяців тому

      That also happened in the 70s . If you listen to one T-Rex song you‘ve heard them all, same with Status Quo, Bay City Rollers, Sailor and all that 70s 3min disco stuff. Or think about all the surfing songs in the 60s. 😉

    • @SG-js2qn
      @SG-js2qn 5 місяців тому

      @@leroyrs Of course there was commercialization in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The 50s were particularly commercial. Popular music is a BUSINESS, and labels were always powerful. That doesn't change what I said. If you thought to "correct" me, no, you're just wrong. Go talk to people in the music industry and get their opinion.

    • @leroyrs
      @leroyrs 5 місяців тому

      @@SG-js2qn I don't get your point, but it seems that you take it personal. When charts were always commercial, why are the 80s so different ? Stock, Aitken, Waterman were the curse of the 80s - everything sounded same, but there were so many different artists and styles - way more than in former decades.

    • @joelhammond4162
      @joelhammond4162 5 місяців тому

      In both cases it's an over generalization. There were many contributing factors for it, but more prevalent depending on the genre. New Wave sound was definitely hugely impacted by the advent of the synthesizer. That started in 70s but became more common place and commercialized as the synthesizers became smaller and more portable. Everyone seems to remember the 70s for disco, but that was just one genre happened to get very popular and fade out just as quickly. Surf had its signatures sounds and reverb, but again just one genre or even sub-genre, plenty of non-surf music. One genre or sub-genre regardless of how popular does not define a whole decade of music.

      I will say that anything that generates profit will certainly foster mimicry and imitation often pushed by the record labels just like happens every else, Hollywood, etc.
