My dad used to cover clapton songs with his group of friends. He hand wrote the lyrics to keep in his guitar case so he could read them as he played.
I found these lyrics in his guitar case snd looked up the song in the early 200's and learned the story behind it. It felt like a message left for me. My dad passed away in a violent car accident in 1995. I can't listen to this song and not cry.

What a tribute to Eric Clapton and his son that a song can move you and everyone else. When I try to imagine the emotional struggle, he endured putting down the words I stop, realizing I will never understand how deep into his heart he had to reach. The story is so sad, but the song is about love.

I'm an old guy and I grew up with the music of the 70's, 80's and 90's. One of my favorite artists during those years was Eric Clapton. I loved "Tears in Heaven" but for whatever reason, I never knew the background behind the song. Thank you Diane for filling me in. I must admit that, like you during your review, I had tears rolling down my cheeks. We all think that celebrities live somewhat "perfect" lives but your video reminds me that even the most famous can have our lives affected by the most catastrophic events.

The song came out a year before my 11 year old son passed away and at the time it was a sad song to me and my heart had hurt for Eric Clapton without any idea of what it was like to actually lose a child. Forever since my son passed this song has hit me so very hard every single time, there are times I can't finish listening to it and it's been decades. Lost my younger brother, my only sibling, to a heart attack 3 years ago. I never had the chance to even say goodbye. siblings hold the key and the fact check to your family memories, and are the only ones who actually experienced them. He left a big hole in my life. A large piece of who I am is gone. This leaves me a total orphan of my original family. This and many other songs represent loss and grief. Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce is another one. Still another I will Remember You by Sarah McLachlan, and Yesterday by the Beatles. It's Time to Leave by Judith Durham. But Clapton tops the list, the song is more direct. Gut wrenching. Thanks for crying with me Dianne. It's very hard to get through this song. And I'm a musician, former music teacher, a father, husband and retired age 67, and I now feel like a helpless little boy again.

I lost my 29 year old daughter March 9, 2023. She had a combination of 3 rare diseases that she fought for 5 years. Over those years her body became completely unable to digest food and absorb nutrients, and even medicine. Tube feeding didn’t work either. Thank God she was able to get pain and nausea medication via IV. Then that no longer controlled the pain and she had to be in sedated hospice. The last time I really listened to this song is when I played it for my mom’s wake in 2001 after she passed away from cancer. My daughter and her grandmother were inseparable. She was just 7 when my mom died. They are together again. ❤️💔😪

@@stevenewcomer8837 so heartbroken to hear what you and your family have been through. Pain relief via IV is such a fairly recent invention (70 odd years) and I'm so glad it gave your daughter some relief. She didn't deserve a life of pain and suffering that wasn't her fault in the first place. I can never bring myself to think of the thousands of years of all our predecessors suffering agony and no pain relief even after prayer after prayer after prayer. My granny died in 2003 in similar circumstances but like your daughter, IV painkillers made her at least be able to read, watch TV talk etc it made her human again and able to accept she wasn't going back to our house ever again. Peace and love to you and your family from Ireland 🇮🇪 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇮🇪

32 years later I still cry like a baby every time I hear this song. I can say that without this song, I would most likely be dead. This came out about three weeks after my fiancé was killed by a drunk driver. After three weeks of walking through life like a zombie, thinking some very dark thoughts of finding Karen again, I heard this on the radio and had a complete breakdown. My neighbors called the police for a wellness check due to the noises I was making sobbing my guts out. It will always be my favorite song that has ever been recorded. I lost my other son on the day he was born & Scott was our blessing 18 months later so that was something else that made things difficult. It's impossible to describe how it feels of course but I think most ppl can imagine. I was in so much shock that there were times I needed so much to cry but couldn't. This song helped me to cry when my brain was trying to protect me. I can't get through it without sobbing like a child so it's amazing that Eric was able to perform the song at all. He's not though is he. You're basing that on an apparent rant he had on stage over 50 years ago in Birmingham. People grow, I know that's an alien concept for the new generation but its true, we're not all born perfect like Gen Z. He's hired and given opportunities to literally hundreds of "people of colour" over the years, but that doesn't mean anything to you does it. To say he's an awful racist is just wrong. It says more about you than him. Being "anti-racist" doesn't make you a good person. Being a good person makes you a good person. Wish you all the best@justinyoung9055

I remember when this tragedy happened, so sad. I'm a 67 year old guitarist and a big Classic Rock fan from the 1970s. Eric Clapton was one of our heroes back then, along with many other Rock guitarists att.
A person must somehow find an inner strength to carry on, it's the worse thing that could possibly happen to a parent.

Clapton is an absolute legend and has produced some incredible music but this song is his absolute best. It's difficult for anyone who knows the back story to this song not to cry, even a little, when they hear it.

    Diane,
You are NOT the only one who cries when seeing and hearing this.. What a GUT punch. As you may already know Eric was a drinker and BIG time doper back in the day. YET he stayed straight when this tragic event happened... Rips your heart OUT!!!!
Keep in mind that feelings allow us to know we are still alive!!!! Take care lady.....

Eric got a call from New York, when on the road ... his little toddler son had climbed up a chair onto the window sill .... fell out the apartment some stories to his death .... that was so heartbreaking for us all back then ...... imagining what it would be for Eric Clapton is incomprehensible !!! The song, no doubt, is his way of working through the tragedy. Most beautiful indeed.

Tears in Heaven" is a ballad written by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings about the pain Clapton felt following the death of his four-year-old son, Conor, who fell from a window of the 53rd-floor New York apartment of his mother's friend, on March 20, 1991. A song that will touch the very depths of all who listen to it.🙏
