I grew up being abused. I was very encouraged hearing this song, because I knew I wasn't alone. I'm 58 now, and knowing I wasn't alone in my experience helped me reach out and get help. These songs are sad, but a lot of good comes from them. :D
Great great popstar Prince wrote a letter to her "Suzanne, Luka is the most enchanting piece of music I have heard in a long time. There are no words to tell you how I feel when I listen to it. I thank God you exist.". ❤
Hi Maggie. Heard Luka by Suzanne Vega almost every day, several times a day on Much Music. I always liked the song, but 37 years later, seeing you react to it, I am in tears. 14 years ago I became a dad. This song is now so heartbreaking I had to give my boy a hug.
In her Masterpiece "LUKA" Susanne tells us her Own Story. Her Voice is UNIQUE and seems Eternal, She Reminds Me of Robert Smith of The Cure, Singing Decades and Her Voices are Still Sublime and Deep. I Know They Have Different Styles But Sometimes I See Them as 2 Versions of the Same Person.
When this song came out, I thought it was brilliant. Musically, its brilliant, so simple, but effective. I'm 59 now, and this song is so powerful I cried
Was listening to it in the car today and wondering, what's the next one I'm gonna learn (I can probably do six of them off the top of my head from just that album). Bought it on vinyl in '88 and never looked back.
Many, many people have stated that this song has helped them deal with their grief,PTSD and shame. This video was one of the first to use computer graphics. She wrote this in one take. There is an interview, on YT, where she explains the origin of this song and the notebook, which has no changes, cross outs etc.
I've been listening to Solitude Standing for over 40 years it's just as good as when I first listened to it SV is a US national treasure (I'm a Brit BTW)
Vega revealed many years after this track's release that it contains elements of personal experience. It makes you wonder about so many horrible activities that go on behind closed doors but which never come to light. At least this beautiful song reminds us that we need to be vigilant.
OOP, my heart didn't need that today, but my mind did. Working in a school, we unfortunately had to keep an eye open for this kind of thing 😢 a tough subject but one that needs to be always acknowledged and stood up against while trying to support the victims at the same time. Thank you for this reaction.
I think Vega as a female deserves a lot of credit for making the victim a boy. That took guts and deep empathy as that is not usual in these past 4 decades. Kudos for a great song also that will remain powerful.
Tom's Diner is also a gender-bender, she's trying to write from the perspective of a (shy) male. I am a male singer who chooses to not gender-bend, but keep lyrics as they are, and it was kinda cool to find out that when I cover Tom's Diner, she did the gender bending for me ahead of time (I do the a capella version).
This is one of 5 songs I heard for the first time, all by female singers, that made me say "Who the hell is that?" and "I need to buy their album yesterday." The others -- Bring Me Some Water by Melissa Etheridge, Stones In The Road by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Reap The Whirlwind by Carla Olson and Dance Along The Edge by Concrete Blonde.
I believe she was a bit overwhelmed at the success. Not only did people like the song, they got what it was about. One of those songs that made a way bigger splash than initially anticipated.
The song that brought the super-taboo subject of child abuse to the forefront. With the exception of the "very special episode" of a sitcom, it was never talked about in pop culture. This remains one of the most unlikely Top 3 hits of the rock era. Great song.
Agree. Pat Benatar's "Hell Is For Children" was another song from the same era that touched on child abuse, too. But I think "Luka" was more well-known.
I think its important that people watch Suzanne Vega - Luka | The story behind the song | Top 2000 a gogo this is only 6 mins long and describes how the song came to life.
Brilliant lyrics. Luka's situation is, sadly, very common, including the fact that she blames herself. Shame keeps her from asking for or accepting help. How about reacting to "Promises, Promises" by Dionne Warwick. It's probably the most difficult song to sing by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and she made it sound easy.
it's 100% about child abuse. This was a hit song. I can't think of another chart topping song tackling this subject. Suzanne Vega has a lot of great stuff though.
Hello Maggie, I just discovered your channel and I love your reactions, I come to recommend that you react to the musical that Jorge Rivera is doing called "Epic the musical" is a musical that tells the story of the famous Odyssey written by Homer, starting with "The horse and the infant" the voices of the people who play the characters are incredible, greetings from Argentina🩵🤍🩵

We were 4 and used horribly

I still clearly remember Luka entering the Top40 chart in 87, loved it instantly. It stayed on the charts for months

I have tears running down my face....music can do that to you, I knew some kids like that, when I was a kid.
Suzanne Vega is an absolutely brilliant singer-songwriter. Her singing and playing seem simple, but her lyrics are powerful and complex.
The song "What’s The Matter Here" by 10,000 Maniacs is another touching song in the same vein.
When this song came out, I thought it was brilliant.
Musically, its brilliant, so simple, but effective.
I'm 59 now, and this song is so powerful I cried
Raising myself since I was 9 years old,, When it was released i related to it more than most.
Sad doesn't quite cut it....heartbreaking is what it is. I cried the first time I heard, and it never fails to bring tears 😢
Saw her in concert in the 80s. She was wonderfully weird, but an excellent songwriter and performer. Thanks for the memory!
That entire album is magic. One of the best albums of the last 50 years.
Was listening to it in the car today and wondering, what's the next one I'm gonna learn (I can probably do six of them off the top of my head from just that album). Bought it on vinyl in '88 and never looked back.
Hear, hear. One of the best albums I've ever heard in my 63 years.

Gets me every time.
I love this song I sing it all the time this was my frist song I've learn thank u dad for your exposure to late 80 and 90s adult com music gene
Great song choice.
As sad as this song is/was it got huge airplay on the radio and MTV when it came out.
Thanks 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I've been listening to Solitude Standing for over 40 years it's just as good as when I first listened to it SV is a US national treasure (I'm a Brit BTW)
Suzanne is the GOAT. I can play more songs by her than by any other artist. When I get stuck, I message her on social media and she helps me out!
such a powerful song! 😪
This was a hit song. Given the subject manner, it's quite a feat.
Vega revealed many years after this track's release that it contains elements of personal experience. It makes you wonder about so many horrible activities that go on behind closed doors but which never come to light. At least this beautiful song reminds us that we need to be vigilant.
I completely forgot about Suzanne Vega -- thanks for saying hello with her.
OOP,

"In your care" by tasmin archer, takes this subject up a notch 😢
Such a distinctive open. I remember when this came out.
I had this on cassette. I can't help but sing along. Tom's Diner (acapella) is so good.
Oh well, I guess I needed a good cry. Always get them when I hear this song.
Somedays, I just singing this. So beautifull song.
Another great song dealing with the same issues is “what’s the matter here” by Natalie merchant/10,000 maniacs
God forgot how sad this song is. Suzanne Vega is class
An underappreciated artist these days. He best album in my opinion is 99.9 F°, very much critically acclaimed after being released.
She was a back up singer for L. Cohen as well
That's definitely something to celebrate.
@@PatR2243 Yeah, especially for L. Cohen! (I love her so much).

WOW
This song always reminds me of being in 4th grade and seeing the after math of child abuse on a class mate.
The song sounds pretty light and happy while the lyrics are so heavy and sad. 😢What a contrast!
For years my friends and I would say "My name is Luka...I live on the second floor" anytime we were introduced someone. It was hit or miss.
The song that brought the super-taboo subject of child abuse to the forefront. With the exception of the "very special episode" of a sitcom, it was never talked about in pop culture. This remains one of the most unlikely Top 3 hits of the rock era. Great song.

@@davedave8602 Luka was also less in-your-face than "Hell Is for Children," so maybe that helped it ease its way into people's minds and hearts.
i have something i dont think you reacted to before ... its from Britains Got Talent ... "Susan Boyle - i dreamed a dream"
I think its important that people watch Suzanne Vega - Luka | The story behind the song | Top 2000 a gogo this is only 6 mins long and describes how the song came to life.
WOW WHAT A EMOTIONAL😥REACTION TO A TRICKY SUBJECT.
👍❤️❤️

💘💘💘
I often find myself singing her song "Tom's Diner".
Another her song I like a lot: Gypsy. Check it out some day.
My favorite song from the album. So lush, so sensuous. I fall into it every time I listen.
Check out "What's the Matter Here?" by 10,000 Maniacs for another poignant take on the subject.
it's 100% about child abuse. This was a hit song. I can't think of another chart topping song tackling this subject. Suzanne Vega has a lot of great stuff though.
Thanks! Sorry to have broken your heart. 💔 But there are sad things in the world that need to be addressed and child abuse is one of them.
Thank you so much I appreciate you!! 🙏❤️🙏🐕❤️🙏
Another great song from her is Tom's Diner please check it out next if you haven't already done so yet !!!
I was 4 ,,,after awhile they didnt have to drug me first anymore I just took it to get it over with.
Here's another for your 'sad song' catalogue, perhaps from an unexpected source, Janie's Got A Gun by Aerosmith...
Very interesting song the backing track sounds kind of weird though. Sounded better how it was originally released.
Abusers forget that the little kid you hit now grows up gets big and strong and becomes your worst nightmare. Or so I've heard.
For a lighter touch by Suzanne Vega, listen to Gypsy.
You clearly were not sad
Terribly heartbreaking
I just end all subscriptions to reactions that don't even get a link to the original videos.
Very sad song. 😢
Yeah Maggie. Sad. This was always a tough song for me to hear. You just can't leave childhood abuse behind. It follows you through the years.
I always liked this song but I never really listened to the lyrics. Shocking.
It's about the boy not Suzanne
Yeah, as the song is written. As noted above, much of it is autobiographical.
Song Of Sand
Great song but hard to listen to
sounds like someone crying out for help-too many this in news unfortunately.
