Pizza Tower has consumed every aspect of my life, so I wanted to review something that would lead into a Pizza Tower video. Naturally, that turned me to the Wario Land games. To my surprise though, it turns out that Wario Land 1 is ALSO Mario Land 3, so here we are! Tell me what you think.

I have a legit question. Are you able to use raycons individually? Leave one in the case and one in the proper ear? I hardly use any functions other than the microphone. This has been the one thing keeping me from buying raycons. If you could give me an answer I would be grateful.

It's insane how 2 of the most prominent Mario characters, Daisy and Wario, came from the Mario Land series.
They are last surviving characters from the series. Nintendo is wrong for that.

I have a lot of fond memories with Mario Land 1 and 2. Now, Mario Land 2 is my favorite of the two, but I feel like they're some of the most underrated games when it comes to Mario games
Mario Land 2 is actually my favorite 2d Mario game.

You know, upon rewatching this video, thinking about 12:00 made me realize something: This actually isn't too out-of-left-field for Nintendo. Classic arcade games such as Mario Bros Arcade or Donkey Kong Jr. used snippets of classical music in their soundtrack (for as small and minimalistic as it was). Mario Bros used Mozart's Serenade n. 13 and DK Jr used both Bach's Toccata and Fugue and the almost exact same bit of the Can Can used in Mario Land. Just a little something i found kind of interesting.

Funnily enough, the Koopas in SML1 aren’t Koopas at all! They’re called Nokobons! SML1 kept all the Japanese enemy names in localization, and Koopas are called Nokonokos in Japan. So essentially, Koopa bomb, without being called that at all! (and goombas, kuribo in Japan, are called chibibo since they’re tiny!)
So nokobons is the prototype for blue shell .

Super Mario Land 2 holds alot of sentimental value with me - was my very first video game. Solid entertaining review dude! Liked the pacing of your commentary here too.

Quite impressed to see people remember Super Mario Land IV, it reminds me of the countless amounts of time that I spent watching Super Mario Bros. 3 Bloopers, The Golden Mushroom, Rise of Mushroom Kingdom and so many other flash animations.
Super Mario Land might be my favourite Mario game tbh. I love that it's set entirely in a different world than the one we've seen in all the other games. And I'm glad someone else remembers the Super Mario Land flash animations with Queen music lol

24:12 I would like to mention some more details about both the cape and the carrot (or at least from what I learned playing both Mario Land 2 and Mario World): with the carrot you easily have full control of your horizontal movement, and if you keep spamming the jump button fast enough, you will never lose altitude, but once you lose it, it's gone and you have to land somewhere to take off again. With the cape you can actually gain altitude while in the air, but you're mostly going in one direction horizontally, unless you manage to lose enough horizontal speed that the value goes in the negatives (or in the positives if you were flying left), thus facing the opposite direction. The romhack Kaizo Kindergarten explains this wayyy better than I can

I first learned about these games via a gaming magazine celebrating one of Mario's Anniversaries (30 or 35th, I can't remember). I knew they were weird and introduced characters like Daisy and Wario, but I still wasn't expecting half of what I saw in this video. It's interesting to see which elements of these games Nintendo would use in the future and which ones ideas remain with these two odd titles. They certainly deserve more attention.
Also, thank you for mentioning the soundtracks. The music of Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong '94 is seriously underrated.

Mario and Wario actually have a backstory together, which only exists in the form of Nintendo Power Comics. These were released before the game came out as a kind of an advertisment. The story is actually quite intersting (for a Mario-Story at least): Wario and Mario were friends in their childhood, but it was in Warios opinion very one-sided. And after 20 years all these memories of an unbalanced friendship get back to Wario. He vows revenge against Mario and starts overtaking Marios Island. These comics are probably not even canon anymore, but I prefer them much more than: "Evil-Mario just randomly stole Mario's castle"
That is not the backstop. That comic is not Canon and it was made two months after the game was released. The comic is a sequel to the super Mario adventure comic that was made in 1992. I know this cause I was own the comic when I was apart of Nintendo power. Nobody knows why Wario hate Mario. Stop repeating crap off the net.

Super Mario Land was the first video game i ever owned, on my gameboy pocket, loved it, started me into playing video games. And that stiff control everyone talks about is what felt right to me since it was my first, after that every other mario game felt too loose to me because of this game.
In a Nintendo power magazine (I think it was issue 21 but if it’s not, it’s the one with fantashia Mickey on the cover) it covered Mario and wario’s background when they were kids. They use to be friends but wario always hated how Mario always had to have the spotlight.
Oh I Remember those animations I remember one such sketch I don't remember it much but I do remember it had something like "Brothers don't shake hand's they chase each other"

These two games were literally the first two games I got for my original Game Boy and to this day along with Pokemon Yellow, are the ONLY GAMES I have physically for the original Gray Brick.
I loved Super Mario Land 2. That game is my whole childhood. I love all the bosses. I played Super Mario Bros 1 after SML2, and I found SMB less creative by comparison. SML1 is essentially inferior to SML2 in every way. I still like it, but it sometimes felt like a Mario clone more than an actual Mario game. But the Easton Kingdom theme is great!!

I recently finished the first mario land. It gets a lot of criticism for not being mario enough. I hadn't played it since I was a kid at school where we would share Gameboy games at lunch. Impossible to get very far in ten minutes but it's a great little game. Mario land 2 felt like a proper mario game and is very impressive.
Returning to it after all these years, via Switch Online. I appreciate that SML2 largely saved all of it's difficulty for the last level...
Funny enough; Super Mario Land 1 was made by people who didn't even know who Mario was as a character; but still in the end made a really solid game, the funny thing why the shells explode is due to the limitations of the GameBoy and it'd have been too much for the handheld with all those koopa shells going which way on the screen.
Exploding Koopa shells? I wonder will it ever lead to anything big in a Mario spinoff game?

3:08 Additional info on Mr. Yokoi: He actually intended the concept of the GameBoy to be closer to his Game&Watch series than a portable Famicom. There was an internal conflict in RND 1 for a while, until Mr. Yokoi relented.
I don't think Pizza Tower is entirely inspired by Warioland, just the part of it. Some of em were from 90s cartoons and games, one of the games i can mention is pretty much Jazz Jackrabbit and that can be seen in the menu, intro cutscene and even some of the music.

I love these games. I grew up in this era. I am as old as Mario Land 1, and thanks for reminding me exactly how old i am. Mario Land 1 used to creep me out because the enemy design is unlike anything else in the Mario franchise. I spent a lot more time in Mario Land 2 because it had a lot of secrets and was very fun. However, it too was super creepy. The skeleton bees in the tree zone? NOPENOPENOPE! The big stack of jars in that one level in pumpkin zone? I had a couple nightmares about going through there and the jars breaking open.

While I know folks usually give the traditional “Bluto” analogy for Wario, it’s worth noting that Wario debuted a year or two after Odlaw, the evil twin of the Where’s Waldo franchise.
For me, I absolutely love Super Mario Land 2, Basically it's like a handheld version of Super Mario World, but in a more different personality design. I also have the DX version where you can play as Luigi as well and in color
