Lack of storage with an N64 cartridge was why the shotgun and super shotgun do not have proper reload animations, as well as missing chaingun guys, revenants, and archviles. The atmosphere Doom 64 had was a major and welcome departure though, and was slower paced than OG Doom.

Good video! This game is probably my favorite Doom game because it feels like an evolution of the formula. Sure some enemies are missing, but the ones that are there more than make up for it. It's a game that genuinely scares me, while still maintaining what made Doom Doom. Also really liked the...the....SIDE QUEST...involving the secret level keys.

This DOOM was (and still is) great, and re-visiting this game twice in the last two days (in my N64 for old times sake and on my Ps4 because I was curious about the Lost Levels and how they tied the game to DOOM 2016 and Eternal) and I had a tear of joy after I completed the Lost Levels because the experience was enjoyable and awesome just like in 1997 (plus, it doesn't help that it was the 1st DOOM game I played and for that reason alone, DOOM 64 has a very special place for me, AND that also it marked my childhood days of gaming when it comes to FPS games, and as a final note, that song at the endings of the game back when my bros and I completed the game... mostly I, the song made us feel badass ourselfs after so many hardships and getting all the stuff payed off... especially because we did it on "Watch me Die!!!").

Welcome New Viewers! Please keep in mind that this review was started before the Doom 64 Re-Release was even announced. That scene in the opening was recorded fairly late into production after it was announced. The "Weird One" title was more a reference to it being almost Cryptid-like for the series because of its N64 exclusivity. Thanks!

referring to 14:00 there's an official 8-level pack introduced in Xbox 360 port of Doom II (then Doom 3: BFG Edition) called "No Rest for the Living", its final level has you pitted against a Cyberdemon wandering down dark crammed hallways while also surrounded by Imps blocking your paths, these walls however (or more like giant red tombs) has switches that you can press to lower (it takes some time to do so) and freeing up fighting space and revealing some goodies (or Imps) inside

Definitely would recommend considering it's often on sale for *checks eshop* cheaper than dirt, and it's interesting to learn that the sequel to Doom 2 was once 64 exclusive.

For those who don't know, the powerups in Hectic can be picked up.
If you turn off autorun and slowly edge yourself to the bottom left corner of the supercharge trap, the trap will activate, and because of the limitations of the N64 cartridge, only one script can be run at a time, so you can grab everything and leave before the trap stops.

How to open the cage in the level before last (No Escape)...
Take the teleporter located in the cavern in the red radiation pit.
This takes you inside of a fortress-like area. Head for the open balcony area in the fortress and look to the right.
You will see a switch set on top of a cutout. Strafe jump onto the cutout and activate the switch.
This opens a wall that leads to the back section of said cutout where another switch is placed.
Jump off the cutout and head for the cavern in the red radiation pit again to go back to the fortress area.
Enter the back of the cutout through said open wall and activate said switch.
This switch opens the cage housing the cyberdemons which you must slay to end the map.
The switch on the outside that you need to elevate yourself to reach only lowers the pillar which has the rocket launcher perched on top of it. To reach it, there are four outside elevators in between the main elevators. The one closest to the rocket launcher pillar will raise you high enough to jump on to the platform to activate the switch.

DOOM 64 was the 1st DOOM game I played back when it was released and my personal favorite (I didn't have much knowledge of the series on those days, but I didn't have troubles to figure out that it was a sequel to DOOM 2) and this couple of days I revisited the game on both my N64 and Ps4 and oh man, now I think I should give it a serious go to DOOM 2016 as I have only played it for a few minutes.

I think you hit the nail on the head when calling it droning. I tried to get into it but the music and having to back track so much and getting lost hunting for the switch or darkly lit door that I missed got old. Plus I managed to accidentally fuck up my saves and ruin my save, I also really like that Doom 64 essentially became Doom 3 and then leads into Doom (4) 2016 and Eternal

Pain elementals are undead cacodemons, which is pretty interesting, not sure why they have hair though. As for the super shotgun, the reloading animation was left out due to limitations in cartridge space, some people have made their own iteration of a reload animation for source port mods such as Brutal Doom 64. The cartridge limitation is also the reason why the regular shotgun has no cocking animation. In addition for the re-release they added more levels to the game which i think you should check out, should you have the time or interest.

I believe Midway did initally pitch this AS Doom 3 during development, but it had to be N64 exclusive as Midway were part of the "Nintendo Dream Team" and were contracted to make a couple of exclusive games for the system, otherwise they'd have just ported the PS1/Saturn Doom over.
But the other Midway N64 "dream team" exclusive was Wayne Gretsky's Hockey, one of the worst games on the console, so we kinda lucked out with Doom 64 :D

Doom 64 is so good. I've played through it completely 3 times, each on a different platform. I originally beat it using Doom 64 EX, then Brutal Doom 64, then the PS4 rerelease. I tried the PC version, but its controls feel so off for some reason, weirdly floaty. Ive also attempted playing the N64 version, owned it at one point, but never got very far. The game does have some flaws though. You really start feeling the limited monster roster in the later levels, it turns into what feels like fighting a Baron around every corner. The levels also can have a lot of switch hunting and puzzle solving that isn't always clear how to solve. There are several levels you will be aimlessly wondering around because you didn't see the switch behind that random column in that one room, and even if you do it isn't always clear what it actually did. The N64 version is also insanely dark. Also, who ever designed the levels was definitely a fan of the "fortress surrounded by water" theme.

If you are anyone ever feels like replaying through Doom 64, I would recommend playing with DOOM 64 Retribution, a port for GZDoom that keeps the game intact (except for adding more frames in all the right places, and yes, that includes the SSG) and adds DLC and all the nice features that come with GZDoom. It even features a gallery of sorts. Definitely makes revisiting D64 something to look for

7:20 This is one of the things which tells apart a professional from the rest. This sentence was on the surface like every other one but it's actually a really powerful argument that sells the immersed viewer your point of view on a peak level and brings them to come back for exactly this kind of consumption. That's the reason why you should have said that at 2/3 from the video and also with the atmospheric game music. Plus with the right tone it's a complete bomb.
Or I'm just stupid but I noticed this at some other creators I can't really describe it. Look what you say and with what. You're probably already doing this.

Lately I've been seeing a lot of Doom 64 videos lately. Back in the day, this was by far my favorite Doom game when it came out. I still play this game on the PC, and it's still as fun as it ever was. Doom 64 is different in that everything about the game is dark in nature. From the music, to the environments, to the enemy spawns, it's just a different Doom game altogether. Oddly enough, I've been wondering if anyone is considering remaking Doom 64 in the Doom Eternal environmental. I know Doom Eternal can be modded. To what extent, I don't know. Either way, I think it would be nice to see this classic remade in a modern engine.

A remarkable achievement!! I can't find the immersion in modern photorealistic games that I felt in this virtual nightmare Doom 64. There must be some psychological phenomena or clinical terminology given to why that is. The sound track certainly helps but there's this immersion I felt in this 3D construction I never felt in Doom 1&2. It's like the weirdest David Lynch movie. It possesses the similar surreal vibe.

Fun fact now that you've covered DOOM Eternal and TAG1&2
The DOOM 64 Lost Levels tells how the Doomguy got sent to Sentinel Prime (he killed the mother demon's sister causing a dimensional rift) and in DOOM Eternal you see how he becomes the DOOM Slayer (which you know ofc)
So that's a fun little fact

I agree with you, this is definitely my DooM 3 and I always placed it in my version of the canonical timeline. But then again, where does Plutonia Experiment fit into the timeline?? If it is Canon. The actual Doom 3 is a spin-off with a brand new marine going through a demonic attack on Mars, while the real DooMGuY is still in HELL because of his DooM 64 quest in my opinion. That’s how I see things with the DooM timeline, and DooM Eternal explained a whole lot of the story and I love the inclusion of the Mykars and Night Sentinels. It opened up a whole lot of whole new characters and lifeforms throughout the entirety of the universe.

Interesting enough, some cut demons included a Hellhound and a female demon. Now what they would have look like is anyone guess. But with Doom 4(2016) and Eternal out and playing them, I think I can guess that the Summoner was based for the discarded female demon of Doom 64. And the Marauder's wolf is what the Hellhound might have been.

Doom 64 is a ton like Marathon 2: durandal. Switch hunting? Check! Massive maze-like levels? Check! Atmospheric focus? Definitely check! But Marathon 2 and 3 have no music at all, but i run the doom soundtrack in the background on UA-cam anyway.
