3 year late GZDoom fella here, GZDoom is a hugely enhanced port of Doom that not only allows modern stuff like higher resolutions and mouselook + vertical aiming, but can also play other games based off the Doom engine such as Heretic, Hexen, and Strife. It also adds a metric ton of modding features, such as a new coding system called Zscript, allowing for easy enemy and weapon creation without having to rely on very pre-defined code from a 1993 game, and there's also an entirely new format for levels, allowing full scripting, transparent surfaces, floors above floors, colored lighting, slopes, and a TON more. 15:15 I've been (seriously) into gaming since 2014, read through multi games history and retrospective once I got really passionate about the medium. I didn't knew what E1M1 meant until now.
Actually the chainsaw doesn’t override your melee. They’re both in the same group so you have to press 1 twice to select it. Same with super shotgun, you press 3 twice.
Although I DO want to rip out each one of your facial hairs for using Freelook, I loved your video and I'm so grateful that people are even discovering the classic Doom games through the new ones, and that there are still people finding their way into the community to this day. Also I like Episode 4 a lot, but I guess because I watched some let's plays before actually playing the games back in the day, I kinda knew what was in store for me.
Thank you for identifying the single most important ingredient to Doom and FPS that so many forget: Easily identifiable enemy types at a glance that have entirely different strategies and behaviors, forcing you to mix it up depending on what combination and environment they throw you into. It's the whole reason there's constant strategy when playing Doom being considered versus a lot of wave shooters where it's just "shoot until dead, repeat"
I'll give you what I know about most source ports, each source port has its own advantages and disadvantages. ZDoom along with LZDoom and GZDoom are modern source ports that are capable on doing modern things like looking vertically, jumping, crouching and more. Boom along with its variants Pr-Boom and Gl-Boom are for many types of maps, Boom is mostly used for slaughter Doom wads like Nuts.wad, Sunlust, Scythe and more. Some source ports are made for various features like Marine's Best Friend(MBF for short). There's also a term in Doom called Vanilla Doom which is Doom without mods, unofficial soundtracks, enemies, weapons and OST/MIDI and it has to be played on MS-DOS, there's source ports like Chocolate Doom, it's not Vanilla Doom but it's Vanilla compatible. There's also compatibility, we have to play certain maps/wads with a specific source port, otherwise it won't run well and causes bugs and glitches like missing textures, the place crumbling over and HOM(Hall of Mirrors) textures. mainly.
Just finished the video, you pretty much hit all the points I expected and I agree essentially with everything you said, good stuff as always man thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next video. And I hope you enjoy listening to some more awesome metal tunes.
The closest I got to experiencing the original Doom games during my childhood was Doom on the PS1. It was my very first video game and started my love for video games and the FPS genre. I think I was only 8 at the time too.
I think it's super cool we kinda have a Similar story of being introduced to DOOM. Back in high school I had a buddy who'd come in the bandroom and would always start playing the DOOM theme on guitar and would talk about how badass of a game it was and me(knowing nothing of it but loving the music) would pretend I knew what the hell (pun intended) he was talking about. Like 2 years later I see DOOM 2016 on playstation now and decide to try it out and see what all the hype was about. Lo and behold I instantly fell in love with the series. Soon after I bought DOOM Eternal and then bought all the emulators for the old games and started playing those. Honestly I'm addicted to DOOM now but it's such an amazing game.
I actually got into Doom before 2016 was even announced and it's one of my favourites now. Funnily enough I prefer the originals, the new one has too much waiting for my taste. I even started making my own wads for Doom 2! It's surprisingly easy, I'm hoping to see stuff about map editing in the Doom 2 vid, since it was such an important part of Doom. I'm working on a 30 level megawad with 11 and a half done so far. Also I totally charted Deep Into the Code for Clone Hero, it's really hard to play on the solos.
bunnyears.net/dan/?p=1328 "Shoot at it until it dies" was never actually in a magazine. It was a doctored screenshot made by the community for comedic purposes.
I’d say DOOMs gunplay kinda works like Pokémon’s element types. Sure, you can beat a fire type with a grass type, but you’d be much better off using a water type.
After you acquire the chainsaw, you don't lose your fists. Just press the '1' key to cycle all the weapons in that slot - in this case your fists and the chainsaw.
As a Doom veteran, I am cringing at missing the Plasma Gun secret in E2M1 and seeing some other rookie mistakes. As a Doom fan though I am super glad you discovered these games.
@MarineSlayer i mean, that's not because you're a doom fan, it's because you're normal, you would react the same about people hating Quake, Mortal Kombat or even Minecraft just for the graphics
I did kill the Spider Mastermind with ONLY ONE BFG SHOT! I just march to that walking brain on legs and shoot it with that big fucking gun and it fell. I streamed that moment few years ago.
I was 15 when Doom came out. It is impossible to overstate what a revelation this game was at the time. As with most revelations, it normally would have faded into obscurity, only popping up now and again in people's top ten lists. Thank god for the modding community!
19:26 this EXACT thing happened to me when fighting the Spider Mastermind. "Lmao get plasma gunned- *dies* SO THAT'S HOW IT'S GONNA BE. *BFG's it twice and it dies* oh."

I’m 38 and grew up just down the road from the ID guys while they made Wolfenstein 3d here in Madison, WI. Raven Software also moved here to make games also and they stayed, while ID moved to Dallas to make Doom. Raven is still here in 2024.
I was introduced to doom at the age of 5 years old in 1995. I played the ultimate doom for years but when i got older i learned how to run mods. I still play Doom on a daily basis. I love how even tho this game is 30 years old, with the mods available now, modern hardware is necessary for playable performance.
My mom took away my Doom CD ROM after the combunine shootings happened because the news blamed the game for the shootings. They literally referred to it as a "mass murder simulator" and showed the player shooting a zombie from behind in a hallway to make it look like the game is about shooting up schools.

I don’t have a pc yet, I’ve been saving up for one since last summer but thanks for telling me about that, I’ll definitely wait until I’ve already got my computer.
Thy Flesh Consumed came out a year after Doom 2. Also, one thing you young whippersnappers forget about Doom is that it basically made PVP a must-have feature of any FPS from the day of its release. Every single FPS, we called them "Doom clones" back in the day, was expected to have multiplayer. Star Wars: Dark Forces was rightfully chided for not having multiplayer. Rise of the Triad improved deathmatch play and Duke 3D brought it to near perfection in the sprite based, 2.5D gaming world. Many WAD designers, myself included, focused entirely on making deathmatch levels to expand upon Doom's offerings. I spent many an afternoon playing Doom deathmatches with my dad. My cousin and I would connect our PS1s to play deathmatches from sundown to sunup. I fully recommend you find a way to get 3 friends together to play a proper deathmatch in Doom 2, the best version for deathmatches. Without doing so you have missed out on 75% of the fun.
Oh I'm gonna, but I'm probably gonna wait until I've taken a break from Doom for a bit so I don't feel burnt out. Though I don't know if I'll include Sigil in my Doom Mods video, or give it it's own video.
Afaik Doomguy assaulted the officer because he commanded him to kill the innocent people in one of the missions which of course the Chad Doomguy refused.
23:03 this is why there are 5 difficulty levels. Select the appropriate level that equals your level of patience, skill & commitment. It was meant to be harder & certainly was a pain in the ass on Normal but now I'm having fun on Ultra-Violence because of perseverance
Quake is the dad of the FPS, dooms FPS grandpa and wolf 3D is the great grandpa. quake gets to be dad because all modern FPSs are made in some modified version of one of the quake engines
Surprisingly enough, I've been PC gaming only a couple years less than console gaming, and I too wasn't alive during DOOM's release, nor Quake II's, but my first time experiencing DOOM was playing DOOM 1 coop on the PS3. After that I eventually played the rest of it on PC (on my own) whilst trying to have the most purist (but not inconvenient) first time playthrough. DOOM & DOOM II are genuinely timeless games.
If you want my opinion, I like the more scary and ambient music from the PS1 then the action music. It fits the levels a bit more. I still love that music though.
I didn't game on pc untill 1.5 years ago at age 39. I bought a gaming pc for Assetto corsa and its mods. But i ended up hardly playing that. Instead i play Brutal Doom Platinum 2.0. So awesome!
I've never played the Playstation port of Doom, so I can't remark on if the music fits the game, but the same composer did the music for Doom 64, and there are times where the level texturing, lighting, and soundtrack work together to send chills down my spine and make my skin crawl.

I've been (seriously) into gaming since 2014, read through multi games history and retrospective once I got really passionate about the medium.
I didn't knew what E1M1 meant until now.
Every DOOM fan having a seizure when he calls it the BFG: 3000 instead of 9000
Actually the chainsaw doesn’t override your melee. They’re both in the same group so you have to press 1 twice to select it. Same with super shotgun, you press 3 twice.
19:16 those are linedefs that when you walk over are telling the door to open
you sir have won my favor for that homestar runner reference alone
Although I DO want to rip out each one of your facial hairs for using Freelook, I loved your video and I'm so grateful that people are even discovering the classic Doom games through the new ones, and that there are still people finding their way into the community to this day.
Also I like Episode 4 a lot, but I guess because I watched some let's plays before actually playing the games back in the day, I kinda knew what was in store for me.
19:26 had me dead this part
Doom, the manliest game that all other manly games wish they’d be as manly man as this man, Man
How many times can you say man
Thank you for identifying the single most important ingredient to Doom and FPS that so many forget: Easily identifiable enemy types at a glance that have entirely different strategies and behaviors, forcing you to mix it up depending on what combination and environment they throw you into. It's the whole reason there's constant strategy when playing Doom being considered versus a lot of wave shooters where it's just "shoot until dead, repeat"
19:26 I absolutely love this part
There's also compatibility, we have to play certain maps/wads with a specific source port, otherwise it won't run well and causes bugs and glitches like missing textures, the place crumbling over and HOM(Hall of Mirrors) textures. mainly.
If we’re going off of actual names, bfg stands for “big fucking gun” epic
Just finished the video, you pretty much hit all the points I expected and I agree essentially with everything you said, good stuff as always man thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next video. And I hope you enjoy listening to some more awesome metal tunes.
The closest I got to experiencing the original Doom games during my childhood was Doom on the PS1. It was my very first video game and started my love for video games and the FPS genre. I think I was only 8 at the time too.
Thats quite young to start slaying.
@@TheRealJochen Yeah, I've been slaying demons for 20 years now.
One small correction is that John Carmack was the one who wasn't on board with the "deep story and cutscenes" idea, which was why Tom Hall left X3
Thy Flesh Consumed was a John Romero chapter, makes sense
I actually got into Doom before 2016 was even announced and it's one of my favourites now. Funnily enough I prefer the originals, the new one has too much waiting for my taste.
I even started making my own wads for Doom 2! It's surprisingly easy, I'm hoping to see stuff about map editing in the Doom 2 vid, since it was such an important part of Doom. I'm working on a 30 level megawad with 11 and a half done so far.
Also I totally charted Deep Into the Code for Clone Hero, it's really hard to play on the solos.
I just realized Trav said "BFG 3000" at 13:30 😭
I may be stupid
bunnyears.net/dan/?p=1328
"Shoot at it until it dies" was never actually in a magazine. It was a doctored screenshot made by the community for comedic purposes.
Well its an official thing now
My GZDoom name is now Johngus Dongus. Thanks for that running gag xD
10:29 you just earned a new sub, mister.
19:33
"OH IT'S GONNA BE LIKE THAT , IS IT ? WELL WHY DON'T YOU TASTE MY BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB"
"There's that realy rewarding feeling as soon as you one of them down." *Doom eternal ad *
I find it very impressive you heart and even comment on videos from years ago, not often I see that. Love your content
Thank 😀
DOOM 64 was my introduction to DOOM and I adore these games. I sometimes play the original or 64 before bed, usually just the early levels.
14:22 If you press the 1 key a second time or, pick up a berserk pack you can use the fist.
Just discovered this channel and gotta say I'm absolutely loving it
13:38 family friendly shield activates
Did anyone else see his save game named "Thy Fucks Consumed"?
I want that "Lion sleeps tonight" sound you made when you killed the Spider Mastermind as my text message notification sound 🤣
e1m1 is both Metallica and DRI - Hooked, you cannot deny how much more Hooked sounds like e1m1
16:00 “ye be shore about that?”-foxy 2022. I think it is too dark
19:26 this EXACT thing happened to me when fighting the Spider Mastermind. "Lmao get plasma gunned- *dies* SO THAT'S HOW IT'S GONNA BE. *BFG's it twice and it dies* oh."
By the way, Nightmare doesn’t add knew enemies positions, it’s the same positions as Ultra Violence because there are 3 enemy position, I’m Too Young To Die and Hey, Not Too Rough have the same position, Hurt Me Plenty has a different position, Ultra Violence and Nightmare have the same enemy positions
Watching that ending of yours and then seeing you have 42,7k subscribers was blissful! :) Happy for you! hope next time it's 100k
My mom took away my Doom CD ROM after the combunine shootings happened because the news blamed the game for the shootings.
They literally referred to it as a "mass murder simulator" and showed the player shooting a zombie from behind in a hallway to make it look like the game is about shooting up schools.
14:25 you day chain saw overrides punching, I raise you the berserk pack one shorting anything lower then a Cacodemon.
I think you should read the "masters of doom" book by David Kushner. It pretty much covers all the history of I'd software and the origins of all fps games
That's such an amazing book. I recommend it even to people who aren't into Doom or gaming in general. It's just so entertaining and interesting in general.
i have to say it. doom being 2d is a popular misconception, it's actually a fully 3d game
the zig zag floor also kinda teaches you to bob and weave :D more addition to hidden detail.
the hitscanners are in a part where you cant really hide either. unless u rush them and hide behind the U shaped area.
That pitched version of No Remorse was kick ass
Did anyone else notice that at 14:13, He got footage of the doom guy surprise face? I heard it it was originally a messed u p code that rarely triggered unless some odd conditions are met like healing while taking a certain amount of damage or using god mode while taking damage. Yes I looked up some of what I just said but it is still cool to see. Great job trigging it Trav!
I'm still proud of the fact that I beat the last chapter or episode, whatever you'd call it on Ultra Violence on my first run through without cheating. It was hell
Fun Fact: Berserk Upgrade stays upgraded once you pick it up till the end of the level, not just when the screen is red.
3:18 teach me your scripting power.
Wow. Lovely video. I'm a huge fan of doom so I knew most of this but you presented it in an entertaining way. Definitely subbing
i experienced both doom 1 and 2 through doom eternal and i love them both and even contemplating whether or not to buy both of them and doom 64 on xbox just to play them in their entirety
NOT ON XBOX. PERIOD. Pc. no matter how shitty yours is. That way you can mod it and shit.
Nice video man.
You think Thy Flesh Consumed is hard?
Try Sigil, John Romero's newest addon to Ultimate Doom.
Oh I'm gonna, but I'm probably gonna wait until I've taken a break from Doom for a bit so I don't feel burnt out. Though I don't know if I'll include Sigil in my Doom Mods video, or give it it's own video.
dude if you want a dumb but yet fun challenge try and finish sigil on ultra-violence with a track pad, and plutonia after finishing doom 2
17:18 E1M1 is based on the main riff of Hooked by D.R.I, the difference is just a single note
For what it's worth, the cyberdemon "tip" wasn't from a strategy guide, but from GamePro Magazine
Oh, this is where you promised to look at X6. 2 Years, it took you. Whelp, I'm glad you did. That video got me to sub and patreon, so good on you.
18:42
Damn! You almost hit the pitch of the narrator for the slayer's testaments.
I wonder if doom guy had a bomb bean and cheese burrito after this game...(also happy 1,000)
Quake is the dad of the FPS, dooms FPS grandpa and wolf 3D is the great grandpa. quake gets to be dad because all modern FPSs are made in some modified version of one of the quake engines
The BFG stand for a big fucking gun
So awesome!
Strongbad saying “Doug-lass” made me legitimately ROFLcopter.
Giving a like not only for the great quality to be expected of your channel, but also because who the FUCK remembers Doom Troopers?
Also fun fact Doom Guy is related to BJ through ID software's first ever game Commander Keen.
I've never played the Playstation port of Doom, so I can't remark on if the music fits the game, but the same composer did the music for Doom 64, and there are times where the level texturing, lighting, and soundtrack work together to send chills down my spine and make my skin crawl.
13:43 in my opinion it should stand for "Big Fucking Gun"
I appreciate the home star runner. That's a deep cut
Fun fact: you’re supposed to find these secrets through the manual of DOOM(back when they still do that) or gaming magazines
When you think about it the baron is a giga imp on steroids
11:31 some demon tomato slaughter
20:47
Nobody talking about how his save is named "Thy Fuck Consumed" 😂
