As an over 30 year old "boomer" who played Doom as a kid when it was shareware in 94, it's pretty cool to see newer generations delve into the game and based on the comments, mod it too.
ok boomer
brunn loser
Great to see that energy. I never grew up with DOOM, either. I'm glad I got to play these for myself, and I look forward to whatever the rest of the series has to offer.
Just as long as I ain't no gate-keeping, controller-hating, GG/alt-right Aussie.
;)
Who the fuck is calling you a boomer. They need to straight up cease existence.
I’m able to play it through doom eternal
The BFG 3000? They sure went through a lot of prototypes before they got to 9000.
How many Emberson prototypes are there then, Emberson 9000
@@fuug1084 Just about [REDACTED].
@@kingstonishaan7132 Okay, but why tho?
@@kingstonishaan7132 youte right nobody cares
In Brutal Doom there was a model of the BFG where it shoots like a Mini gun
Out of all the “Lion Sleeps Tonight memes” I’ve seen, this was easily the funniest.
Agreed 100% I sometimes turn this video on just to watch that clip 🤣
Time stamp?

I love this man's content
12:42 I love the detail of the ammo count actually decreasing when Dwight shoots the dart. You didn't *have* to do that, but you did and I love you for it.
ive watched this over 10 times and jsut realized that
I also thought that you couldn’t change between the chainsaw and fist, but you can by switching to your chainsaw then press 1, it does what happens in doom 2 with the super shotgun and shotgun which you can also switch between - you can also 1 shot the spider mastermind with the BFG with how the cone of fire works, basically fire and hug it and you might one shot it. Great video
Yeahh I figured that out during Doom 2 when I figured out that tapping 2 switches between the Super Shotgun and the regular shotgun. Thanks for the insight though! Giving your Comment a heart so people can notice what I got wrong.
@@ThatTravGuy This was actually something that was introduced with mods. In vanilla doom you can't alternate between chainsaw and fists. Except when you have the Berserk... iirc.
@@DoombringerFPS Correct, it only works if you have Berserk. Otherwise it's Chainsaw only.
Obviously mileage may vary based on source port.
Maybe the Doomslayer in Doom 2016 blowing up the spider mastermind with the bfg is a reference to this
It also did that with Doom95 the windows DirectX port written by Microsoft for ID software by the future founder of valve
17:57 That is not an actual quote from a real strategy guide. That is a ZDoom screenshot, tilted, given a background and a grainy filter to make it look scanned, but it's actually just a meme. The decals on the wall behind the cyberdemon prove that this is is a ZDoom screenshot, and ZDoom was not created until long after the rise of the internet made strategy guides obsolete.
But now it is a real tip for them because Doom Eternal features it as a splash screen pro tip
@@Snavels fr? Cool
Hi 42! Glad to see you spreading some Doom facts out here, hehe.
@@DoomKid Heyyyy, bro! :-D
I shot the Cyberdemon until it died. I'd say it's a 100% legit strategy
Finally, someone that realizes that hitscanners belong!
They pepper you with weak undodgeaple shots, but are weak, and should be taken out first. They apply pressure. They're not the problem. Its the people who put 7 chaingunners or archviles in the same room.
Even worse, 7 Chaingunners _and_ Arch-Viles.
@@theparadoxbox1744 At that point they're just asking you to use the B.F.G., and if they didn't give you one, or they're placed up high where you can't hit them, then it's time to play a different wad.

Levels were designed for Ultra Violence enemy and item placement and made easier from there. Nightmare is a joke difficulty that was made because people complained UV was too easy.
Wait really
Yeah, the two Johns basically said "ok, fuck the people who said it was too hard*
3:06 that's a very Vargskelethor question
DO YOU LIKE MIDIS???
1:49 Well, it is not John Carmack who wanted all of that, it was Tom Hall all along. Carmack couldn't give 2 dimes about story and lore actually.
Hence his famous quote
I figured. John Carmack was never the type to really care about story or really anything but making engines.
"I consider myself a remarkably unsentimental person." - John Carmack
"Mr Doom Guy discards all of his weapon and it makes each episode feel a bit fresh"
Heard about pistol start? Each level is planned in a way so that it could be completed with only resources provided, and it's much more fun that way in my opinion
How good are you at doom? I usually have every gun and still die.
Update, I got good. I now agree with you
@@connorgolsong290 character development
Honestly, I feel this is one of the reasons I love DOOM, but I can't get into Half Life. They focus so heavily on resource management that if you're caught without much ammo right before a difficult fight, you're basically screwed. In DOOM, I always seem to have enough to get by, even if sometimes barely.
I've only ever played the GBA version of DooM, so seeing PC footage and hearing the PC music was so cool!
One of the things I learned about the Chaingun that makes it even better is that the first two shots are perfectly accurate. That means it is somehow both the game's machine gun and sniper rifle.
Ew, freelook.

Crazy that when I started reviewing these games, I always played on Normal / Hurt Me Plenty, but now running through Doom Eternal + Ancient Gods on Nightmare like it's nothing. Expect a Doom 1 + 2 revisited video sometime in the near future, I can't let this video tarnish my name.

I agree, Doom is the most important fps of all time. Hell, what game do you know that spawned two waves of clones?
I got into Doom like you, when they announced Eternal I bought 2016, and after that played every single main entry. I've just been postponing Doom 3 tho, don't think I'll ever get into that.
19:26 had me dead this part
Wait a second, you had production quality like this before you even got to 1K? Well boys and girls, I think we’ve found ourselves a gold mine here. Love your content!
If we’re going off of actual names, bfg stands for “big fucking gun” epic
I got into 2016 then looked back and researched into the ogs, played them and fell in love with them to the point of having the entire series (1, 2, 3, 64, 2016 and eternal) on switch as well as source ports and emulators of wolf3d, quake and the build engine holy trinity on pc as well. Basically I became a massive retro gamer because of this series and I have a huge love for it
19:26 I absolutely love this part

I've been (seriously) into gaming since 2014, read through multi games history and retrospective once I got really passionate about the medium.
I didn't knew what E1M1 meant until now.
Although I DO want to rip out each one of your facial hairs for using Freelook, I loved your video and I'm so grateful that people are even discovering the classic Doom games through the new ones, and that there are still people finding their way into the community to this day.
Also I like Episode 4 a lot, but I guess because I watched some let's plays before actually playing the games back in the day, I kinda knew what was in store for me.
Actually the chainsaw doesn’t override your melee. They’re both in the same group so you have to press 1 twice to select it. Same with super shotgun, you press 3 twice.
3 year late GZDoom fella here,
GZDoom is a hugely enhanced port of Doom that not only allows modern stuff like higher resolutions and mouselook + vertical aiming, but can also play other games based off the Doom engine such as Heretic, Hexen, and Strife. It also adds a metric ton of modding features, such as a new coding system called Zscript, allowing for easy enemy and weapon creation without having to rely on very pre-defined code from a 1993 game, and there's also an entirely new format for levels, allowing full scripting, transparent surfaces, floors above floors, colored lighting, slopes, and a TON more.
Pretty much it takes Doom's engine and makes it into a suped up build engine
Doom, the manliest game that all other manly games wish they’d be as manly man as this man, Man
How many times can you say man
Watching that ending of yours and then seeing you have 42,7k subscribers was blissful! :) Happy for you! hope next time it's 100k
10:29 you just earned a new sub, mister.
I'll give you what I know about most source ports, each source port has its own advantages and disadvantages. ZDoom along with LZDoom and GZDoom are modern source ports that are capable on doing modern things like looking vertically, jumping, crouching and more. Boom along with its variants Pr-Boom and Gl-Boom are for many types of maps, Boom is mostly used for slaughter Doom wads like Nuts.wad, Sunlust, Scythe and more. Some source ports are made for various features like Marine's Best Friend(MBF for short). There's also a term in Doom called Vanilla Doom which is Doom without mods, unofficial soundtracks, enemies, weapons and OST/MIDI and it has to be played on MS-DOS, there's source ports like Chocolate Doom, it's not Vanilla Doom but it's Vanilla compatible. There's also compatibility, we have to play certain maps/wads with a specific source port, otherwise it won't run well and causes bugs and glitches like missing textures, the place crumbling over and HOM(Hall of Mirrors) textures. mainly.
Just discovered this channel and gotta say I'm absolutely loving it
Just finished the video, you pretty much hit all the points I expected and I agree essentially with everything you said, good stuff as always man thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next video. And I hope you enjoy listening to some more awesome metal tunes.

"OH IT'S GONNA BE LIKE THAT , IS IT ? WELL WHY DON'T YOU TASTE MY BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB"
Thy Flesh Consumed was a John Romero chapter, makes sense
Thank you for identifying the single most important ingredient to Doom and FPS that so many forget: Easily identifiable enemy types at a glance that have entirely different strategies and behaviors, forcing you to mix it up depending on what combination and environment they throw you into. It's the whole reason there's constant strategy when playing Doom being considered versus a lot of wave shooters where it's just "shoot until dead, repeat"
Great video, i love your editing and sense of humour.
Keep it up ^^

One small correction is that John Carmack was the one who wasn't on board with the "deep story and cutscenes" idea, which was why Tom Hall left X3
19:16 those are linedefs that when you walk over are telling the door to open
I think it's super cool we kinda have a Similar story of being introduced to DOOM. Back in high school I had a buddy who'd come in the bandroom and would always start playing the DOOM theme on guitar and would talk about how badass of a game it was and me(knowing nothing of it but loving the music) would pretend I knew what the hell (pun intended) he was talking about. Like 2 years later I see DOOM 2016 on playstation now and decide to try it out and see what all the hype was about. Lo and behold I instantly fell in love with the series. Soon after I bought DOOM Eternal and then bought all the emulators for the old games and started playing those. Honestly I'm addicted to DOOM now but it's such an amazing game.
you sir have won my favor for that homestar runner reference alone
I want that "Lion sleeps tonight" sound you made when you killed the Spider Mastermind as my text message notification sound 🤣
Afaik Doomguy assaulted the officer because he commanded him to kill the innocent people in one of the missions which of course the Chad Doomguy refused.

The closest I got to experiencing the original Doom games during my childhood was Doom on the PS1. It was my very first video game and started my love for video games and the FPS genre. I think I was only 8 at the time too.

I actually got into Doom before 2016 was even announced and it's one of my favourites now. Funnily enough I prefer the originals, the new one has too much waiting for my taste.
I even started making my own wads for Doom 2! It's surprisingly easy, I'm hoping to see stuff about map editing in the Doom 2 vid, since it was such an important part of Doom. I'm working on a 30 level megawad with 11 and a half done so far.
Also I totally charted Deep Into the Code for Clone Hero, it's really hard to play on the solos.
DOOM 64 was my introduction to DOOM and I adore these games. I sometimes play the original or 64 before bed, usually just the early levels.
My GZDoom name is now Johngus Dongus. Thanks for that running gag xD

Great video btw.
I was introduced to doom at the age of 5 years old in 1995. I played the ultimate doom for years but when i got older i learned how to run mods. I still play Doom on a daily basis. I love how even tho this game is 30 years old, with the mods available now, modern hardware is necessary for playable performance.

Thy Flesh Consumed came out a year after Doom 2.
Also, one thing you young whippersnappers forget about Doom is that it basically made PVP a must-have feature of any FPS from the day of its release. Every single FPS, we called them "Doom clones" back in the day, was expected to have multiplayer. Star Wars: Dark Forces was rightfully chided for not having multiplayer. Rise of the Triad improved deathmatch play and Duke 3D brought it to near perfection in the sprite based, 2.5D gaming world.
Many WAD designers, myself included, focused entirely on making deathmatch levels to expand upon Doom's offerings. I spent many an afternoon playing Doom deathmatches with my dad. My cousin and I would connect our PS1s to play deathmatches from sundown to sunup.
I fully recommend you find a way to get 3 friends together to play a proper deathmatch in Doom 2, the best version for deathmatches. Without doing so you have missed out on 75% of the fun.
My mom took away my Doom CD ROM after the combunine shootings happened because the news blamed the game for the shootings.
They literally referred to it as a "mass murder simulator" and showed the player shooting a zombie from behind in a hallway to make it look like the game is about shooting up schools.
Quake is the dad of the FPS, dooms FPS grandpa and wolf 3D is the great grandpa. quake gets to be dad because all modern FPSs are made in some modified version of one of the quake engines

"Shoot at it until it dies" was never actually in a magazine. It was a doctored screenshot made by the community for comedic purposes.
Well its an official thing now
I did kill the Spider Mastermind with ONLY ONE BFG SHOT! I just march to that walking brain on legs and shoot it with that big fucking gun and it fell. I streamed that moment few years ago.
Surprisingly enough, I've been PC gaming only a couple years less than console gaming, and I too wasn't alive during DOOM's release, nor Quake II's, but my first time experiencing DOOM was playing DOOM 1 coop on the PS3. After that I eventually played the rest of it on PC (on my own) whilst trying to have the most purist (but not inconvenient) first time playthrough.
DOOM & DOOM II are genuinely timeless games.
I've never played the Playstation port of Doom, so I can't remark on if the music fits the game, but the same composer did the music for Doom 64, and there are times where the level texturing, lighting, and soundtrack work together to send chills down my spine and make my skin crawl.
17:18 E1M1 is based on the main riff of Hooked by D.R.I, the difference is just a single note
Also holy shit Hall and Carmack's original idea!! :D
Strongbad saying “Doug-lass” made me legitimately ROFLcopter.
For what it's worth, the cyberdemon "tip" wasn't from a strategy guide, but from GamePro Magazine
e1m1 is both Metallica and DRI - Hooked, you cannot deny how much more Hooked sounds like e1m1
Hey, Trav Guy, GZDoom is rendered with OpenGL and Vulkan. The gameplay does actually change, because well… the more retro source ports use more efficient and modern raycaster rendering and keep most of the og code intact, but fixing most of the unsafe bugs (mostly code from the official DOOM source port, linuxdoom, released to the public in 1997), and GZDoom uses actual 3d rendering written in a way to simply fake a 2d-raycasting renderer. One primary example of the difference between retro source ports and GZDoom is that GZDoom mobs don’t have infinite height, Decino has a video about this “infinite height” thing. The point is: GZDoom changes a whole lot of DOOM’s original code, keeps enough of the retro content to satisfy the fans, but it does heavily modify the game, changing the feel. Because for instance, if you compare Crispy Doom (a retro-focused source port, but includes better basically everything whilst keeping the main idea and code idea intact) and GZDoom, DOOM 1993 don’t look like GZDoom

@@ThatTravGuy …………… huh?
@@nerdastics3987 Makes me sad your very thoughtful and informative comment got a weird bot reply from the video creator lol. I agree with your point on GZDoom heavily changing the vanilla experience. Crispy Doom is an excellent sourceport for a vanilla playthrough. I personally use Retro Doom these days for vanilla/limit-removing gameplay.
These things probably mean nothing to most people unfamiliar with Doom but mouselook, jump, and crouching can really break some maps. I'm all for people doing whatever they want, but if someone is going to make a long video sharing their thoughts and discussing history behind a retro game, why not just do a quick google search on recommended settings for a vanilla playthrough...
I was 15 when Doom came out. It is impossible to overstate what a revelation this game was at the time. As with most revelations, it normally would have faded into obscurity, only popping up now and again in people's top ten lists. Thank god for the modding community!

Did anyone else see his save game named "Thy Fucks Consumed"?
Also fun fact Doom Guy is related to BJ through ID software's first ever game Commander Keen.
After you acquire the chainsaw, you don't lose your fists. Just press the '1' key to cycle all the weapons in that slot - in this case your fists and the chainsaw.
I still think DOOM holds up amazingly even after (almost) 30 years. The controls still feel responsive and aren't clunky in the slightest, the weapons feel good, the enemies are distinct and have that chess-board mentality that so many games still use today, besides the graphics (and even then the pixel art looks really nice) the game feels surprisingly modern.
I didn't game on pc untill 1.5 years ago at age 39. I bought a gaming pc for Assetto corsa and its mods. But i ended up hardly playing that. Instead i play Brutal Doom Platinum 2.0. So awesome!

Bobby Prince, the games composer, was tasked with just making metal-type music. He, obviously, didn't. There are some (almost obvious) allegories, but he went in a different direction. He also released a high-quality CD of both Doom and Doom 2 music, which is sadly out of print today. I luckily managed to get a copy of it. If you can find it in any form, I highly recommend a listen.
BFG= Big Fucking Gun
