Freezing fried squash for winter frying. - Навчання та стиль
I've used this method many times. My advice is to add whatever seasonings you like to the dry ingredients. I use garlic powder and granulated onion in mine. It's very handy when it comes time to cook.
I'm late to the game here but there's zucchini every year so now I'm prepared! Lol great video. Very helpful for God's most bountiful vegetable!
I will so be using this method!
Yes we do love some fries squash 😊
Great,I will be trying this
This is great . Thank you
THANK YOU!!!!! I LOVE fried squash, but never thought of doing this to be able to have year round!! :) Just got a fresh picking and will be doing this!!!! My husband will be happy too!!! :D
It does work great and taste like summer in the dead of winter. Thanks!
I love your channel .. I really enjoy and learn so
Good job.
Love this idea!!!! Thanks so much!!!!
Thanks! I just got done freezing my last batch a couple weeks ago. Just a note, I didn’t use the egg wash this year and it seemed to work well.
Thanks for the instructional video. Just what I was looking for!
Thanks!! I’m starting to freeze a few batches this week.
Thank you never knew summer squash could be frozen this way
Rita Rogalski. Hi. It taste like the middle of July during the dead of winter with these. It’s some work but you can take them right out of the freezer and fry them.
Awesome video. I'm from Millen GA and we love squash!
Thanks! We are in north Alabama. We are just starting to pick our squash. We love it to. We are actually having some tonight. If you are gardening this summer, I hope you have great success.
Glad I found your video! I have a lot of squash in my garden and I will be using your method for freezing. Thank you!! Belinda
Thanks!! My wife just picked our squash. She called me to bring the Polaris Ranger to pick up the harvest. Looks like I’ll be freezing squash tomorrow. 😃
Wow, this is great! I have a lot of yellow squash this year (I'm in Washington State) and really wasn't sure what to do with it all. I'm certainly going to give this a try. Fried squash sounds really really good :) Thanks for this!
Cheri Powers. It really does taste like summer even in the dead of winter. Best of luck!
Thank you thank you and thank you. I’m doing this tomorrow after I go to the market 👏👏👏👏
My squash is about to start coming in so I’ll be doing this in a week or two.
So amazing I’m gonna try this! Thanks
Awesome!! Thanks!
I followed you instructions and WOW I tested a batch just now to see if I should put more up! I WILLLL....... they were delicious, crispy crust and they tasted like squash! THANKS!
Barbara Jackson. Thanks! We actually fried some a couple days ago that I froze last summer. Still great. All the best.
Just found this video! Can’t wait to try it this year. Thanks
Thanks!! Hey just a note….I didn’t use an egg wash the last two years and it work just as well. That will save you some time.
@@useful.knowledge good to know! Appreciate it!
Thank you. I am always happy when you post new videos because you make the canning and freezing of food so easy. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks!!
Yoy realy found the good title for your channel. Thanks for sharing
Thanks!!
My squash plants I started from seed in January are in overdrive right now. I'm about to bread, freeze, can and pickle bushels! This is how we do it for freezing too..
Kim Texas. Wow! I just planted squash on Wednesday of this week. You definitely have a jump start. Best of luck and eat a few fried squash for us.
this is so awesome I can't thank you enough for sharing this, what a great way to keep summer goodness all year long☺️
Crystal. Thanks for the kind words. I just finished another batch of squash for the freezer last night. We have fried squash all year. I wanted to do this for years but worried that it would not work. I finally tried it about 5 years ago and it works!
UsefulKnowledge I can't wait to try it, especially when you have squash and zucchini coming out your ears lol😀
Thank you. I have been wondering how to do that and be able to still fry it. I just love fried squash. Never get enough. 🥒😁👍🏻
Hi. I love it also! I was looking at some fried okra and thought that it would work for squash. I’ve been breading it without the egg wash and it’s working great. That will save you a step and some time.
@@useful.knowledge Hi, I have never eaten okra. Can you use it the same ways as zucchini pretty much as to freezing it.
Hi. I honestly don’t like okra (my wife love it) but I’m sure it would somewhat be the same. Blanch it, flour it and then freeze it.
@@useful.knowledge 😁👍🏻
I freeze grapes and blueberries in a cookie sheet, then bag them to eat later. Works great. I'm embarrassed to say I never thought of doing this method with squash. I wonder if there's a way to do this with green tomatoes... I have green tomatoes nearly the size of red delicious apples.. I've never seen anything like it in my garden.
Hi. I think it would work for tomatoes. I got the idea for the squash from looking at some frozen okra.
Do you think the same methodology could apply to fried pickles? I love them fried pickles
👍
I wanted to say thanks a lot for showing this! I really liked how it comes out ! Now I can cook during the winter season! Besides my neighbor gave me some squash from their garden! Thanks again for showing how !
Vanessa Keever. Thanks! It is amazing how good fried squash can be even in the dead of winter. My wife loves fried okra and I always looked at that frozen battered okra thinking that I could do the same with squash. I tried it and it worked! Best of luck!
+UsefulKnowledge
I just wanted to ask something about cooking the squash!
Vanessa Keever. Ok go ahead and ask.
+UsefulKnowledge
I just wanted to ask if its ok it comes out saggy when you boiled them.
Yes, that's how they are just after you blanch them.
Love this idea, I need that knife your using in my life would make cutting them up quick and easy, where can I get me one?
foxcreekbaskets.com/. These are the folks that make them.
UK, we tried this way back and wound up with rubber squash. Am I missing something? Your vid wound up on my page this morning and though 5 years ago to you it's only like a couple of minutes to me. Ha. We're going to attempt the waterbath pickled squash method with a few jars this time around for frying. The test is the winter product. I'd sure love to have some edible fryers later. Upvoted for your great work!!
Hi. Rubber squash after you fried them? Also, did you freeze them?
@@useful.knowledge Absolutely. Same method you used. It's old tech. That's why we never did it again. It was so long ago...The only diff was mebbe we didn't do the icewater plunge trick. So, I think we'll have another go at it copying your vid precisely with a couple of bags. With what's going on today the freezer method is for the slow down whereas the jar method is for the go down. Backups for the backup. In a few minutes I'll be getting another load of garden tomaters ready to go into the dehydrator to try and get ahead. Starting to come down in double 5 gallon buckets for the big waterbath this weekend, looks like. Wow! Again, super thanks for sharing!
Hey. This is great - do you deep fry them right out of the freezer? Or are you pan frying them?
Hi. You can do either. I just fry them like I would if they were fresh. I just take them out of the freezer and into the pan.
Could you cook them in the air fryer?
My squash plants here are throwing off squash left and right. 10 lbs a day nearly on amended soil in N. Alabama. My tomatoes are being stubborn though.. growing well not turning though..
Anthony Poole. Same here. I even lost several plants during all of the rain we got during May. We have frozen so much squash that my wife has resorted to giving some to friends. Tomatoes seem to be delayed this year.
Great idea, thank you! Do you thaw the squash before frying or it goes in the fryer straight from the freezer?
Sorry, I just saw you answered this one already!
No worries. I just take them straight from the freezer to the frying pan and it works great.
you are the Bomb! Wow. I kept wondering how in the world you EVER raised your plants long enough to have these beautiful squash. I always manage to get about 2 messes of 3 squash and then the squash bugs and the borer bugs win the battle and my plants collapse. ONE time I did make it a little longer and the mildew got the plant. What is your secret weapon??????
webbsway. Hi. Thanks! I plant the squash in hills early in the season just after the last frost which is late April for me. This helps with the bugs. I use diatomaceous earth (not poison) if I do find any bugs. Check out this video for how I grow squash ua-cam.com/video/Ri3KqkLkYxY/v-deo.html
Best of luck! One thing to note is that I plant a lot of seeds for plants because they do produce for only a short time.
Forgot to say that squash grown in hills will help the mildew problem.
Could you offer any advice for the squash bugs
webbsway. I use diatomaceous earth through a duster or sometimes I just hand spread it onto the leaves of the squash. Also, check for bug eggs on the underside of the leaves. Insects hate to walk on the diatomaceous earth so I end up with some in the leaves and all over the ground.
Thank you SO very much. It would be so nice to get more than 3 squash.
Honey...use a big slotted spoon...you will get that squash out of the hot water a lot faster. Thank you for this. I have squash I need to get rid of.
😂. I have them but mywifemovesmystuff sometimes…. I actually started using a basket like you would use for a chicken wings. I pull them all up at once. Try that, it’s a game changer.
Enjoyed your video, I have a question when your preparing could you place a piece of freezer paper on top of 1st layer and repeat, to help with prepping more at a time?
Hi. Thanks! I think it would work. My only concern would be getting the paper and the squash to separate after it's frozen. I honestly would try it layered and see how it does. I have three of those sheets in the video so when those get full, I'm tired of breading squash by then. :) I will freeze them and put up some more the next day.
@@useful.knowledge After watching your video, I used parchment paper rather than oil and flour the cookie sheet. When quick-frozen, they popped right off the paper and no serious scrubbing of the cookie sheet. Just throw it away or use it again if you have more squash. I then sealed the frozen slices in a vacuum sealed bag. Seemed to work great. Thanks for the idea.
@T N. Hi. Thanks for sharing. I actually did this during the summer (my wife suggested it..). It does works really good. Thanks!!
Thanks! I think the same would apply to okra?
Hi. Yes, okra is where I got the idea to give this a try. Someone commented that parchment paper works really good instead of the extra flour on the cookie sheet. I tried it and agree. Thanks!
I'm not a fan of corn meal,so can I just use Kentucky Kernel seasoned flour instead or does the corn meal have to be used ?
sheri Edwards. Hi. That flour would work and it sounds awesome. I’m going to have to find some.
What are you using to slice those? I would like to buy one. Thanks!
Kelsey. Hi. This link should get you to the knife folks. foxcreekbaskets.com/products/tennessee-mountain-bow-knife
Great information. How long in ice bath?
kristine lawson. Hi. 5 minutes in the ice bath is enough. Basically your just stopping the cooking process. Thanks!
Could you use this same method for okra to freeze ready to fry?
Jennifer Hubbard. Hi. I’m almost certain it would. That’s where I got the idea :)
Hi, it's 2018 and just found this video. I was wondering about freezing green tomatoes. Are they supposed to be blanched also? We would love to have them in the winter.
Rita Thatcher. Hi. I absolutely think you could do green tomatoes like in this video. I would blanch them. Please let us know how they work out.
Hey Jamie could green tomatoes be done this way and would they have to be blanched
Carol Mckinney. Hi. Yes, I think it would work with green tomatoes. About the blanching, I understand that it halts some type of enzymes that cause a bitter taste. I have always blanched because I didn’t want to risk any bitter taste after all of that work. Thanks!!
What is the purpose of the egg wash?? When I fry fresh squash I only coat with cornmeal. I do not dip in egg first. Just curious.
Leslie Smith. It’s simply a good binder for the breading. I think it’s more necessary in the freezing of the squash than cooking some fresh.
Do you thaw a little or just put them straight from bag to hot oil?
Amber jane. Hi. I just put them in the oil straight out of the freezer. It’s as close as you can get to fresh in the middle of winter.
I noticed you used yellow corn meal, is that better than white
Carol Mckinney. Hi. It really doesn’t make a difference that I can tell. I just made some of these this weekend and used white cornmeal.
Useful Knowledge thanks for the reply
Do you have to use corn meal or can you just use flour
I don’t see why not. There is a restaurant in a town near me and flour is all they do. It’s just programmed into my brain from when I was really young to use 50/50 flour and corn meal.
Just wondering if you have tired this with zucchini, and if so, did you use the same method?
Paula. I haven't tried it with zucchini but it should work. If you try it, I suggest making a small batch, freeze it and then fry it up. If I ever get a spare minute from building this barn, i will try it. Thanks!
Thank You for replying. I'm going to give it a try. I'll let you know how it works out. ;)
Paula, how did it work? I'm up to my ears in Zucchini!!!
Would you have to blanch the okra?
Jennifer Hubbard. Hi. Yes, I would blanch the okra. Please let us know it does.
This would work with okra too, I would think?
Hi. Frozen okra is actually where I got the idea to freeze squash breaded.
How long can you leave blanched squash in ice water?
Hi. Just to stop the cooking process. A few minutes is fine.
How long do you think they would keep in the freezer?
Hi. We just ate some (last week) that we froze last summer. They were still great.
Thank You
I don't have cornmeal...what else can I use? Breadcrumbs?
Hi. Breadcrumbs would probably work really well.
Do you blanch the squash first??
Hi. Yes, I blanch the squash. I just finished freezing some yesterday. I didn’t use the egg wash and the corn meal mix seemed to stay on the squash just as well.
Could you just lay wax paper or parchment down on the pan?
Jennifer Hubbard. Yes, that may work. Great idea. The main concern is the moisture of the squash coming through the breading before it freezes which makes them stick. My squash are done for the year but I’ll try this next year. Thanks!
i am trying to find info on freezing eggplant for winter frying. Does anyone know if this method would work for breaded eggplant? Please
Jenifer Acklin. Hi. I would try it. My suggestion would be to take 2-3 eggplants and make a small batch. Freeze it for a few days and then fry them up and see how they do.
@@useful.knowledge very wise, however, I have about 12 or 14 beautiful eggplant sitting on my counter we picked 2 days ago. busy time of year for us as I am sure you know.
@@1gr8lpta Understood about busy. I was canning fig preserves until about 11:00 last night. I will tell you that I was waffling about doing the fried squash for a few years before i tried it. You really can't tell a difference in the frozen squash and fresh. All the best!
How does it look after cooking?
Hey they look like you fried them up fresh. Also, they taste great!
@@useful.knowledge 😍😍😍
Do you fry them frozen?
Yes, I take them right out of the freezer and fry them.
What is the purpose of the boiling? Why can’t it be frozen without boiling?
Hi. It is really called blanching. It basically preserves the flavor and texture of the vegetable.
Have you tried doing this without the egg and seeing what happens?? Also, what’s the parboiling for? I’m just curious!
Hi. I haven’t tried it without egg. The egg wash is just a binder for the coating. I may try it to see what happens. The worse that could happen is the coating comes off when cooking.
Useful Knowledge I’ve always breaded mine with just what “water” was left on the squash when cutting them. I’m going to try the egg and see how it turns out.
I bet these are so mushy if you try to fry them?
No at all. They actually are about as close as you can get to frying squash in the summer.
You didnt say how long in cold water
It just needs to cool down enough to handle it. 3-5 minutes is enough
