This guy was a genius; it breaks my heart see how he was treated by venue owners, etc. He wasn't allowed into restaurants with white diners and some hotels refused to accommodate him. I cannot believe the cruelty; yet until the day he died, he led his life with such dignity and charm. We could all learn something from this lovely and talented man. The best all-round entertainer of his time......and some!

Fantastic.. just fantastic. Sammy was/is a man of great dignity without doubt an absolutely lovely gentleman. The worlds a sadder place without you sir. Till we meet again..

The intonations of his voice, so unique and intuitive. He gives a kind of Jazz twist to the melody too, his own style, brilliant interpretation of Burt Bacharach's composition. It's amazing too how he suddenly strikes up the orchestra too - hadn't even taken his jacket off and still puffing on a cig ha!! He also evokes a kind of euphoria with his gestures, and even the way he dances and physically/soulfully becomes so involved with the music, a healing uplifting performance that gives me goose bumps every time I return to this... and many times. He naturally bends the notes and comes spot on with pitch too. To think too of his private life and all he surmounted in his life, a minority, a black man who beat the odds, amazing. Oh, not to miss mentioning his great sense of humor!
@@terrylawrence8362 Hi Terry! Your message comes poignantly as I was just feeling down in my self-imposed existentialist quandry etc plus just minutes ago realizing I turned off my refridgerator 26 hours ago before I recorded some music and lost $112 worth of meat, eggs, and cheese. I've worked a lot at songwriting and general nonfiction/journal/fiction/screenplay but all great for my soul or to me but to very few else ha! Thanks for your kind words!
The dude is performing like a Boss! Making jokes, and smoking! SMOKING!!! LOL!!! he's so smooth and relaxed of there that he botches the lyric at the beginning of TGE song and recovers so smooth that you don't even notice. Then he starts singing as easily as he's talking...THATS an entertainer.
Total perfection, that was Sammy's trademark. He made everything look easy with his many talents. My wife and I saw him live back in 1982 and we were in pure heaven for the two hours of his singing, drumming, vocal imitations, tapping, and dancing like James Brown, Michael Jackson and others, and telling jokes. Sammy did it all, right up to ending with "Mr. Bojangles", that brought on two encores. We let him go after that, we could see that he was tired, and he sure gave us one heck of a show.
Perhaps the MOST dynamically diverse entertainer of all-time; singing, multi-instrumentalist, actor, impersonator, dancer, gun tricks...no doubt, there's a lot more to this singular, childhood prodigy!
This unique guy had a tremendous self-awareness. A love of life almost unequalled. A great love of jazz - and music itself. A fireball of a character. A wonderful singing voice. Hell, who was his equal in every aspect?
I really appreciate this video. I've watched this over and over again. Sammy's so young and natural improv shows deep into his spirit and character. You can see his careless, unrestrictive, free following performance that leaves me in awe. It's like we're hanging out and Sammy just gets up and performs. Real natural, possibly high, possibly exhausted, but with all the feeling of his life and his life experiences displayed while singing this song. It's extraordinary and fantastic. A one of a kind man. The world truly has lost a talent. RIP SAMMY. AMEN
There was something so appealing about this man...What a gift he had. I would have married him in a minute...I find him very handsome in a classic way...I often wonder...If he had stop smoking...How much longer would he had lived...And what would he be singing...
They actually did that live on the spot? Man that performance was unbelievable! Im going to learn this song just like that. The bass is "so slammin!" The vocals, my lord Sammy's vocals!! Thank you so much for posting this work of art!
We were so privileged to see Sammy at the Melbourne Tennis Centre in March 1989, a little over a year later, we lost this fantastic entertainer. Its a great tribute to the man to see all these comments.
Sammy was so cool. So smooth. Look how he works the camera (makes it so personal). What a talent! I hate that he had to get old and eventually die. Wish he could stay like that forever.
One of my best memories is I was able to see him perform at a Casino in Lake Tahoe. He even sang and danced to Mr. Bojangles. it was magic to listen and watch him.
This is 100% speculation but Sammy always to be his happiest when he was onstage performing!! Always seemed to be in a state of pure elation when he was singing. Sammy did about a 13 minute medley Of Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse songs on Playboy After Dark around 1968 with Anthony Newley in the audience. Sammy was in a state of pure ecstasy performing in front of only about 40 people.

Love his timing with the lyric. Best male singer ever!
Absolutely. The Greatest Entertainer of All Time ❤️
the absolute coolest rendition of this song ever!

When he kicks in at 1.45 , the power, then he switches again ....beautifully done.
I loved him when I was 5 years old. He remains one of the coolest cats ever. Power, strength and bravery.
Beautifully expressed Sir you would be an excellent author 🙇 Respect

Also the vibrato in his voice during the chorus is masterful.
Sammy was in my mind the greatest entertainer of the last Century.
What can one say: he was the most incredible performer, ever!!!
WICKED COOL!!! This version will go down as the best in history.
+Susan Graham I still prefer Herb Albert's version, but I was always a big fan of Sammy.
+UsfanlovesMinho But you gotta admit pal this version Sammy did has more SASS!
Susan Graham I do like his style, he was always unique and that voice was great. I still miss him.
:)
Quite right Susie Q.
Musical silk ! Just so damn smooth ! Only Sammy , only Sammy . nuff said.
There aren’t performers like this man anymore. The music, showmanship and charisma can not be matched. Only ever one Sammy.
There was nothing Sammy couldn't do.
Total perfection, that was Sammy's trademark. He made everything look easy with his many talents. Sammy would perform until he had nothing left in the tank - the best all round performer ever 💪💪💪
My God, this man was a genius!

Yes he was multi talented, hell, he even played drums.
Yep, he was a one man show - could keep an audience captivated all by himself.
Wow! You go Sammy! Love that he wasn't afraid to just wing it, and he sang the hell out of it!
Sammy didn't have talent, he was talent.
An evening with the master.
I love him so... can you believe he smoked while he was singing LOL
This is just way too cool!!!!!!
Back in the day, there were musicians, and there were singers. Sammy was BOTH!!!! God bless his soul....
Well played with that unmistakable Sammy touch of class. Well done Sammy, Thanks. Peace...
OWNING just about every performer alive today.
He was a victim of racial discrimination. RIP Sammy D jr.
The coolest cat!
Emotion. Real ACTUAL emotion, and you can see it . . . you can feel it . . . you can hear it. So glad I found this. What a legend.
"In color, but you can't see it". Lol. I think he was probably one of the funniest men around when I was a kid, but I was too young to understand.
Funny jus like jerry lewis, yes?

The best version so far, Fantastic only Sammy Davis Jr. could do it. With incredible feeling OMG!! We miss you so much!

All of Sammy Davis, Jr.'s amazing songs and only the silly "The Candy Man" made it to the Top 40. SMDH. His 60's work was beyond cool...

Sammy had a serious internal conflict about his race. This led him to be one greatest entaintainers ever.
Man, he seems like a real likeable cat.
THIS VERSION IS THE BEST HE WAS SO UNDERATED AS A PERFORMER VERY COOL
Sammy was so cool. So smooth. Look how he works the camera (makes it so personal). What a talent! I hate that he had to get old and eventually die. Wish he could stay like that forever.

We don't have performers like him anymore. All we have is mediocre singers that without Auto-tune they are nothing.
vesilohikaarme We do have performers like this, we just don't control what music we produce.
I’ve heard many sammy versions of this but this the BEST
