I hear a really interesting analogy some years ago. Imagine an ant hill next to a highway being built. Will the ants ever even notice that something "unnatural" is happening in their backyard, even killing some of them? Sun rotates fast af and travels through the universe even faster, yet.. to us it seems almost perfectly still in the clear sky. Perhaps, the whole observable universe actually is some sort of multidimensional highway or perhaps some kind of circuit in an alien machine and all the stars are only sparks produced by soldering joints. And the whole process takes less time than the blink of an eye for some giant alien being. This is one of my favorites. I feel like the internet shows people so many “miracles” that we are desensitized to the beauty inherent in not only life, but survival. This captures that, and also the utter complexity of community that exists in populations: ant workers, soldiers, queens and etc all fulfill a purpose in the colony that is both communicatory and self sacrificial, much as the individual cells in our body operate. If we are ‘alive’ and ‘conscious’, then why not an ant colony, all communicating and cooperating for the greater good of the groups survival? It’s the same thing, but it exists at a different level of organization

Fun fact about those Baby On Board signs. The intention is to show first responders, should you be in a serious crash, that there is an infant in the wreckage and they should prioritize saving them.
I always thought it was just a little "hey, some extra caution, please." I'm not sure if you've noticed, but people tend to drive like complete and total morons, even if they're otherwise reasonable, intelligent and considerate individuals. Oddly enough, I actually do ponder about language and communication through they day quite often. My youngest son (7 year old) has a rare genetic condition which made him intellectually impaired and will likely mentally remain a toddler forever. You don't get a solid appreciation for words, communication, information processing, and fine motor control until someone you care for literally doesn't have the capacity for it. I wish I knew what's actually going through his mind or how he perceives the world. It's hard to wrap your head around what that must be like. He understands some verbal cues but has a very present, active memory. He gets frustrated a lot because he can't communicate what he wants or understand explanations. I constantly try new things to help him understand, as do the therapists and teachers at his school. But with this kind of diagnosis being untreatable, it's difficult to know what to do. That's why I frequently consider words, communication, and body language.
I read some research on why animals yawn: it is a way to signal that either "there is no threat, you can pass the message along and chill out" or "I'm not a threat, just chill out" ... when seen like that, my dog's fake yawns make a helluva lot of sense.
Yeah but none of these explanations get even close to explaining why simply READING the word "yawn" is enough to induce the sympathetic yawn reaction. Meat computers are so fucking weird.

I hear a really interesting analogy some years ago. Imagine an ant hill next to a highway being built. Will the ants ever even notice that something "unnatural" is happening in their backyard, even killing some of them? We could literally be awash in communication signals and cosmic messages but don't have the ability to even notice. We could be looking at things on telescopes that are wholly artificial and not even know it.
The expansion of visible space being a really slowy constructed interreality highway is my headcanon now.
pulsars
@@SirTorcharite Perhaps it's not even slow construction.. How slow seems human being to a fly? Or how slow would an elephant seem to a gastrotrich, which lifespan is shorten than a week? For creatures, like gastrotrich, walking elephant could perhaps seem almost still, like an statue. In that perspective, what is time anyway..
Each black hole is the carbon left over after such a spark has cooled, and its "giant" gravity is actually something like static electricity that attracts dust and seed sparks.
Am I on drugs? Perhaps. Am I wrong? Perhaps not.
@@k.noname1496 Absolutely! All perspective is relative!
The lives of a pet likely seem long from an old animal passing naturally, while they seem so short in comparison to our lives as humans.
A race living tens of thousands of Earth years would be inconceivable to us by it's very nature. With so much time available to something why rush to turn and acknowledge something? Why not leisurely adjust your sight to something over a few hundred Earth years? Moving slowly conserves energy and prevents heat buildup!

What's the condition called?

"Language is the ether in which we distribute abstractions" - well said.
Yesterday was the day that comes around every few months when I realize I have the need to listen to exurb1a's "Message to Marble 3" which I need to remember the beauty of our life. This inevitably leads to my semi-annual refuel of absolute inundation with flooring astonishment for every aspect of our reality, provided through the slowly, thankfully ever-growing catalogue of exurb1a's. And then today this comes out, to the man who wasted a lot of early life on a linguistics degree. Absolutely perfect.
Well said! Agree completely 🙌🙌

@@altosack - holy f*ck! I never knew that is why ppl do that, either. Thanks for the nugget of wisdom!
@@garyt4394 - It was sarcasm; in an accident, the sign could flip either way from either starting position. I’m willing to bet the vast majority of people with BoB signs have them because of narcissism, not to direct first responders in an auto accident.

8:01 - 8:30 is actually a beautiful and hilarious example of the Kuleshov Effect, where two film shots shown consecutively can convey more meaning than the two shots shown separately
Thats a really good point I handt thought of it like that haha
At the same time it is also a great example of human communication without language. Its two stock images. They don't change. But the switch and and the zooms covey perfectly the concept of an awquard silence of unbelief.

There was another radio signal, the dutil-dumas message, sent out to various stars and galaxies after the arecibo message. I would recommend downloading and trying to decipher it on your own. It's a good way of seeing both the types of messages we're sending, as well as what sort of process we might have to go through to decode an alien message.
How can you bring so many seemingly unrelated areas of understanding, stories, and scientific discoveries all into one beautifully edited video and idea?? Every time I start a video, I know I'll end up somewhere very different. I enjoy the adventure! Keep it up!

It makes me really sad that appreciation for nature is something that needs to be advocated for. Like when people are confronted with the extinction of a species and they say "so what, it won't affect us humans".-- Not only is it a completely stupid statement, it betrays a complete lack of appreciation for that species. What could be more horrifying than the thought of an entire type of animal fading away into the fossil record????? There's literally nothing sadder.
@@DuckinMyHat i know some vegans that would argue to literally kill every animal on earth.
Wild life = suffering, nothing is more terrible than wild life right, currently animals are slowly being eaten alive (I would quote Richard Dawkins but I can’t remember the line).
So yeah just wanted to say these kind of argument exist, and that is a funny way of looking at nature.
Maybe the nicest thing we could do about nature/wild life would be to destroy it ? And in that regard, keeping it would be an egoistic human behavior, as we like nature and find value in it.
So yeah not necessarily my position, but I think it is definitely true to say that our which of saving the wild life is still egoistic. WE like animals and want to save them.

@@shadowcween7890 yeah, but science and philosophy has come no where near answering questions such as how shit existing *really* is, or if it's just a part of the HUMAN condition. perhaps animals can actually feel strong emotions like love and depression and anger, and killing them would be morally wrong. but they may also be like automata, and truly feel no emotions whatsoever, so killing them wouldn't be causing any problems for anyone but ourselves. we just don't know yet.
