I'm fascinated by the potential architecture that could be built with 0.6% atmosphere pressures and 38% gravity. 200 stories high? Cantilevered for half a mile? Curves that would be simply not possible under 1g. Something I don't see in Scifi films really taken to the limit.
@@Spectification You don't think the crush strength of your building material is a big deal? How about 500 yard long cantilever portions of a building. Bridges spanning unheard of gaps. The wind on Mars would need somewhere near 300mph to equal a 20mph breeze on earth. Wind isn't an issue. But in terms of load baring capacity, all your materials just got nearly a 300% increase vs their earth ratings. I'd call that a big deal for any creative engineer that wants to work with it.
Well I don't see the point of making a 200 stories high building when you have so much land available. Even if you could potentially build higher, why would you? 11:35 this is the exact way of thinking I typically go about Mars. A self sustaining colony that doesn’t rely on the mother land, and is extremely far away, can, in theory, become its own nation, or in mars’s case, its own world. It would be a costly trip, having taken many months and years to get there, only for a self sustaining land to suddenly cut itself off. Isn’t humanity just grand
Gotta love me some existential dread from the fermi paradox. Imagine trying to colonise Mars just to get a message from aliens that reads "Stay hidden, they'll hear you"
There's a story I read on Reddit /HFY, every single radio, television, noise making device suddenly tuned into the one broadcast. An alien like voice that said in a hush tone "be quiet, they are listening!" Sent the whole planet into radio silence and stopped all of our broadcasts, tv, radio, satellite stuff. Great read, terrifying thought provoker though.
"The Greeks called Mars' two moons Fear and Panic, and there is a reason for that." Yep, and the reason is: Mars is named after the roman god of war, Mars. The greek form of Mars is Ares. The carriage of Ares is pulled by Phobos and Deimos (which translates to fear and panic), so the reason lies simply in mythology.
After he says this he included like a single frame of text explaining that an astronomer named the two moons after ares’ sons. Turned it to .25 speed so I could pause and read what it said lol

I found this video to be oddly pointless. He starts out ranting about how getting to Mars is going to be hard, follows up with how building a permanent base is going to be possible, and then closes out with how _technically,_ Terraforming is going to be possible, but also _very_ hard. All of which was pretty obvious from the get go. The first guys going to Mars will make their best Tuna in the can impression? No shit. First colonists on a barren, irradiated rock are going to have it rough? Yeah, no surprise there either. Terraforming is technically possible, but very ressource and time intensive? Well, yeah, what else did you expect? Our own planet formed over a period of a billion years, replicating this will be very, very labour intensive...
One completely insane idea that would never ever work but be interesting would be to find an asteroid or comet or any relatively small celestial object that has a large amount of ice or water in any form really and just... nudge it to into a collision course with Mars ; bring the ocean to mars in the most apocalyptic way possible
Insane as it might sound at a glance, the main reason it wouldn't work is just the sheer number of comets & asteroids you would need to add a significant ocean - planets are crazy big, and even big asteroids are itty bitty sand grains in comparison.
That was actually floated as a way of increasing Mars' mass (to deal with the 1/3rd Earth gravity issue). It's not an effective way to deliver water to the planet, however.
Let's say a child is growing up enough to go next door and stay the night. That would be like humans going to the Moon. The equivalent trip to Mars would be like the same child getting on a train and going from Seattle to Mexico City and staying a year, and then returning.
@@FishbedMyBeloved And that is good. Mars is still under a big question for any development, its too far and there is really no interesting things there, unlike a moon that provide some interesting capabilities + we need to test our new tech on practise, like a solution for moon "wind" that proved to be a pain for any long-time structure.
When it comes to the bacteria that introduced oxygen to earth, it also caused the biggest extinction event ever (that wiped out 99.9% of all life) and an almost permanent ice age, so maybe not the best option for terraforming mars.

I've sailed across some of the Pacific. At some points we were 750 miles from the nearest other human, unless you count distant cargo ships. You don't need to go to Mars. Just get a yacht. It is everything you think space exploration is without dying from radiation etc. (,Unless you count sunburn.and cancer). We saw the ISS going over and it was half the distance from us to land.
It's still not really the same. You've still got gravity, and if need be you can call for help and have it there in a matter of hours rather than months or years (or never). You can get more food by fishing, and can treat seawater to make it drinkable. You can also turn around and go back if necessary. Yeah, we haven't even explored the oceans and wanna go to Mars. The Greeks didn't know Mars had any moons. He is actually twice wrong; Phobos means fear and panic, and Deimos means terror and dread; Mars has two moons, named Phobos and Deimos, so the two moons are NOT named fear and panic... they are named 'Fear and Panic' and "Terror and Dread." Lastly, the Greeks had no idea Mars had any moons, so obviously the Greeks didn't call Mars' moons; some random astronomers just picked those names, because the convention in astronomy is to name planets, and moons, after Greek and Roman gods

Outside of unrealistic sci-fi scenarios fixing any kind of pollution in Earth's atmosphere, even the kind toxic enough to kill all life on Earth, will still be 100 times easier than making Mars have a breathable atmosphere...
@Edmonds75 while possible, space exploration also will provide humanity with a load of extra materials to work with, materials that are ATM only available in small quantities. Also space research and material science is also something that rapidly transfers to our day to day lives and because there is ATM a giant boom in the industry you also see significant leaps in manufacturings and technology used
But those tasks are very different; on Mars you need to add lots of greenhouse gasses (which Earth proves that we're really good at) and somehow create oxygen until there's an ecosystem that sustains oxygen levels by itself. On Earth you'd need to somehow *remove* greenhouse gasses (or at the very least stop producing them), which we're not very good at, and do some other things too.

@@gorrium5027 the solution to colonizing mars if the moon isn't just "throw more people at it". I’m surprised instead of going right to “terraform the entire planet” that creating little self-sufficient biospheres isn’t considered more often. Filling an enclosed stadium-sized space with grass and trees and oxygen is totally do-able in fairly short order. A handful have even been built on earth to varying degrees of success. (Mostly because they’re usually built and run by drugged out tenured university professors, not people whose lives depend on them functioning) They’d just need the occasional sharing of the local pathogens to ensure getting a visit from the biodome next door doesn’t result in total ecological collapse and you’ve got a bunch of little earth like city-sized islands on mars
if your doing that... whats the point of doing it on Mars as opposed to say.... here under the ocean of in a floating space stations above this planet..? we cant reach a level of ecological collapse that makes Mars a useful alternative short of this Planet literally exploding... So without a resource/economic based reason to set up shop on Mars building a colony there other than to show we can lacks any real merit.

The fermi paradox hinges on one VERY big assumption: That we could dectect alien civilisations and/or they could visit us. If it turns out Science Fiction was wrong and FTL is not possible, there is almost 0 chance that we could detect alien civilisations even if there are thousands of them in the milky way. This video presents compelling arguments on not settling mars, now imagine trying to convince people to spend trillions of dollars on a big spaceship to take a 600 year journey to the next closest star.
You've got it backwards. The Fermi paradox doesn't assume we could communicate with alien civilizations and conclude we're alone; it tentatively assumes the existence of alien civilizations and concludes there's liable to be a reason we *can't* communicate.
Fermi’s begins with a lack of evidence, the expectation that there should be something and there’s nothing. Red flag! Like, lower your expectations on telescopes and appreciate the wonder of positivist astronomical science, my brother in christ!
A 600 year journey to the next closest star? No. Consider the Alpha Centauri system. It is about 4.3 lightyears away. If we use a nuclear salt rocket engine we should be able to get there in about 25 years with tech we can make in the next 10-20 years.
@@2MeterLP Proxima Centauri B is an Exo-planet that is similar in size and atmosphere to earth, it's situated within the Goldilocks zone as well so it's generally theorized that we could live there, however the issue is that one side is extremely hot and the other is freezing cold and we'd have to live in the middle of it and not to mention that it'd take 1000s of years so unless we figure out FTL or Cryoships it's very unlikely.
There's a 2009 movie called Mr Nobody that includes a few scenes like this. Part of the movie is set in a future where people can travel to and from Mars, or even choose to live there. It looks fun in the travel ads but when the main character arrives, most everyone is making comments about how boring Mars looks. The "city" just a bunch of giant grey factories and housing units inside of big domes, and everything outside the domes is a desolate red desert. A giant steel elevator passes overhead, filled with hundreds of bicycles, and it becomes apparent that Mars isn't much more than a place from which we can extract cheap materials and manufacturing, and a tourist trap for rich people who can afford to go there. I recommend it to most viewers of exurb1a, the majority of the movie isn't about Mars at all, it's a film that explores ideas like choice, the butterfly effect, how our environment shapes who we are, and whether there is such thing as a "right" path in life. It's one of my favorite films.
Honestly I fall asleep to these videos, because your voice is just so relaxing and I can focus on something that's soothing and not to seriously but at the same time interesting.

Still, I'm editing all this after a few beers, so it stays. Sorry to waste your time with all this. Oh wow, a tiny puffin" A jpeg of a puffin is right of this sentence.
Funny thing about Phobos and Deimos, the two moons, one's on a very gradual exit trajectory where it will one day YEET off into space losing the surly bonds of Mars, and the other is on a collision course where the extreme speed and energy it will encounter as it spirals down toward the surface will shred it into a beautiful ring around Mars. Fun place
I strongly feel like the idea of terraforming and colonizing other worlds is similar to the early 20th century idea of “flying cars”. Sounds grand as hell and (may) be possible in theory, but requires far too much energy and then you sort of realize land based cars are equally as practical.
@@seams4186 I wouldn't say crap...probably a step above it. For sure, the star of the books is the idea of living on Mars and the logistics and techniques they come up with. 200 stories high? Cantilevered for half a mile? Curves that would be simply not possible under 1g.
Something I don't see in Scifi films really taken to the limit.
Gravity is not that big of a deal when building in general. Wind conditions are. Those are on Mars as well, although to a lesser degree.
@@Spectification You don't think the crush strength of your building material is a big deal?
How about 500 yard long cantilever portions of a building.

The wind on Mars would need somewhere near 300mph to equal a 20mph breeze on earth. Wind isn't an issue. But in terms of load baring capacity, all your materials just got nearly a 300% increase vs their earth ratings.

That would be a kinda nice answer. The solar system seems like enough space for awhile

I love his videos too, but here I kinda disagree with him, sure some science areas are dead ends, but terraforming is not a feat of science, its more a feat of engineering, and the great thing about engineering is they usually always find an answer, maybe not using conventional think but still
@@sharrpshooter1 Duct tape the atmosphere, if that doesn't work add some greace. Realistically though it's actually both. It science for the technology necessary to achieve it within a realistic budget, engineering for the actually deploying and sustaining the infrastructure.

Insane as it might sound at a glance, the main reason it wouldn't work is just the sheer number of comets & asteroids you would need to add a significant ocean - planets are crazy big, and even big asteroids are itty bitty sand grains in comparison.
probably need to scrap half of europa to get an ocean on mars

That was actually floated as a way of increasing Mars' mass (to deal with the 1/3rd Earth gravity issue). It's not an effective way to deliver water to the planet, however.
Let's say a child is growing up enough to go next door and stay the night. That would be like humans going to the Moon. The equivalent trip to Mars would be like the same child getting on a train and going from Seattle to Mexico City and staying a year, and then returning.
Human can reach mars even right now. It will be one end suicidal mission, the first human at mars in current time is a dead man, but on mars.

When it comes to the bacteria that introduced oxygen to earth, it also caused the biggest extinction event ever (that wiped out 99.9% of all life) and an almost permanent ice age, so maybe not the best option for terraforming mars.

It's still not really the same. You've still got gravity, and if need be you can call for help and have it there in a matter of hours rather than months or years (or never). You can get more food by fishing, and can treat seawater to make it drinkable. You can also turn around and go back if necessary. Phobos means fear and panic, and Deimos means terror and dread; Mars has two moons, named Phobos and Deimos, so the two moons are NOT named fear and panic... they are named 'Fear and Panic' and "Terror and Dread."
Lastly, the Greeks had no idea Mars had any moons, so obviously the Greeks didn't call Mars' moons; some random astronomers just picked those names, because the convention in astronomy is to name planets, and moons, after Greek and Roman gods

I’m surprised instead of going right to “terraform the entire planet” that creating little self-sufficient biospheres isn’t considered more often. (Mostly because they’re usually built and run by drugged out tenured university professors, not people whose lives depend on them functioning)
They’d just need the occasional sharing of the local pathogens to ensure getting a visit from the biodome next door doesn’t result in total ecological collapse and you’ve got a bunch of little earth like city-sized islands on mars
if your doing that... whats the point of doing it on Mars as opposed to say.... here under the ocean of in a floating space stations above this planet..? we cant reach a level of ecological collapse that makes Mars a useful alternative short of this Planet literally exploding...

You are the first (so far) person I watched stuff about problems with colonizing Mars who mentioned "finding alien life" and how it might be existentially damaging to colonists. So if all the problems of living on a hostile land won't drive you mad- finding an asnwer to Fermi's Paradox just might tip the fkin scales
"Of all the stories i've written, this is one of them"
From all words that have been spoken this one carry some meaning, and we are proud of you for that, congratulations for your achievement, an unique one that many had the honor of being graced with, you deserve it, just like everyone else.
I'm convinced, sign me up for a one-way trip to Mars
🚀🚀🚀
0:36 "If you treat it properly"
.... And that is where the problem is
The fermi paradox hinges on one VERY big assumption: That we could dectect alien civilisations and/or they could visit us.
@@technologyondemand4538 And what are we supposed to do in Alpha Centauri? We have plenty of inhospitable rocks in our system.
