You mostly talked about the existential dread of the cosmic scale (and that's great), but as a biotechnology student I would like to mention that the microscopic scale can invoke similiar feelings. The other day, my class were watching paramecium under the microscope and, when done, we washed them down the utility drain. We don't care. Just as the supermassive black hole doesn't care about us.
One step thing further I like to think about is, we are the collective the colony of these tiny beings. As a collective we do not care if individual cell is gonna die, but whole parts of body, oh boy. Now one day I dream in the distance future as a collective we are going to achieve such feasts from science that maybe not black hole, but like stars and planets will "care". In other words, who knows. Maybe we will amount to something of significance in this galaxy and in a way it's very comforting to believe we will.
I think about that when I am walking in my backyard. All the tiny and not so tiny things I am stepping on just getting annihilated, or worse being mutilated. But, is what it is. We suffer the same fate just on a different scale.

@@BusinessWolf1 I’m working on reading through all of Lovecraft’s fiction right now! I completely agree, Lovecraft was masterful at using words to paint a detailed scene, especially for his time. But the way he wrote is characters can be a little bland at times. I was just about to say the same thing! It's so much fun to listen to his entertaining storytelling! Especially combined with the informative and open mindedness :)
The reason I love exurb1as videos is because it shows how the universe itself is often times more strange and beautiful than anything we could write in science fiction, the message from 8 million species of aliens really made me start to take more notice of the world around me
Nah, you're just not reading the right science fiction. Read The Gods Themselves by Asimov or Helliconia Winter by Aldiss (also while you're there you might as well read spring and summer too)
The Monet joke is enough energy I need to keep going. Just to see you put in effort for a little joke like that whilst explaining cosmic terror just puts a smile on my face. Somehow you always manage to comfort me. For a long time i refused to watch you videos because i was depressed and did not want to trigger my existential crisis with yours. But then i realised i could just be more like you. Philosophizing about life while still enjoying it by laughter, love and knowledge. Thanks for everything xxx
Haha well, am working on my physics exam prep rn and I was looking at the Michelson-Morley experiment about two hours ago. You're a legend, love your videos! Thanks for keeping us out of the depths of the emotional abyss. Have a good one and until your next video!
@@eric212234 Hi Eric, I can't see them either. But there's a similar lag with some of the other comments here. So maybe just something UA-cam related ig
You have an incredible ability to mix existentialist depression with humor to highlight just how beautiful our universe truly is. It makes your videos timeless masterpieces which are always enjoyable and thought-provoking.
Hijacking your comment to second this - those videos are era-defining, this is truly the new kind of content that wasn't out there before. It is what UA-cam has been created for - building a communities of like-minded people who share certain interests, and this is the best example of it. Those videos are what inspired me to hope while in existential depression. If you can understand those videos then there is so, so much more in them than just couple of puns. I love it - they really make my inner-child excited and interested by the mysteries of the world around. I rarely cry out of awe and laugh with tears on the span of couple of seconds. Contrats, turtle, you did it. Waiting for some video on emerging AI.
i feel like black holes are always described in the most terrifying and personal way. it's like the people explaining it are aiming to make children develop phobias about them... but like you said, it's not about us. we don't have to worry about being spaghettified because we are not even remotely close to a black hole in our human lifespans. but still. my heart rate definitely went up during that part of the video. maybe it's just me that has a primal fear of black holes.
They try to make us scared of space, full stop. It's the same reason they sent a teacher up when there were issues with the shuttle but it was cleared for take off & she, & the rest of the crew died shortly thereafter. The same reason why the people who were the original crew to be 1st to go to the moon but, on a test run, the capsule was filled with pure oxygen & an electronic panel sparked & burned them immediately. The same reason Neil Armstrong saw an error light, which he mentioned to the ground crew, a couple times, but who told him it was nothing - yet he had to manually takeover the lunar capsule, otherwise he & Buzz Aldrin would have crashed into the surface because they were going 10 times faster than their equipment was reading. I'm beginning to see a pattern here 🤔🧐🤯
I'll never cease to be amazed and comforted by the existence of this channel. You're books and videos, music and everything has helped me explore depths of my mind I hadn't been able to grasp before. This was amazing, I needed this.
@Iris ten Geusendam It is also an extremely common typo for people using their phones. But with this level of intelligence that is needed to understand and appreciate the video, that should be rather obvious. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly and easily people judge others, even based on the most minor details. A wonderful night to you, too.
@@iristengeusendam7842 "But the difference between "your" and "you're" is basic knowledge really" 🤓🤓🤓🤓 You seem to be forgetting that autocorrect messes up sometimes, besides the fact that there are non-native speakers, dyslexic people, people with attention deficits, and those that simply get distracted while typing. You regained my liking into physics and space, and made my crippling depression even higher. But no for real, I had lost my interest in physics and maths when I was ending secondary school (1-2 years ago) and I'm hating physics in my university, but you woke up that curiosity again and I'm going to fucking take it by the hand and never let it go again. Man, I really don't know how a professor can destroy my love for something and just one random (and fucking marvelous) video make me so passionate about everything. I'm going to pass my grades for real. I believe in me
Ever since i got over maths in uni I regained my curiosity for it. So i can only tell if it doesn't weigh you down anymore, you'll be able to take interest in these topics
You motivate me so much to continue my degree on Maths and Physics, I really don't know where I would be without your depressing antidepressed videos about how awesome the universe is. Thanks for making us live our lifes at their fullest
i may hate my quantum chemistry class with a burning passion, but seeing some of the experiments we learned about pop up in your videos and knowing ahead of time what you're going to say is admittedly pretty cool
exurbia, been watching your videos for a few years now, i’m 18 and you are the main reason i’m taking english and philosophy at sheffield uni later this year, thank you so much
I was driving my 2004 Fiat Multipla and clicked on this on accident while stuffing my sweet wrappers back in the box. I loved the part where you said "Einstein was wrong." - Ether gang 📯📯
The bad thing about this channel is that is the only channel that makes this kind of videos. I didn't found any other channel that gives me the feels that this one gives me.
YES!!! I love your videos! I've been showing some others your videos through some of their rough times, and it seems to have been helping them out. Thank you for what you do
I have to be in a very specific nihilistic mood to want to watch your videos, so how serendipitous it was tonight for me to come home after an atypically disappointing day of work and disheartening couple of hours of community service to find your existential dread of a channel pop up in my home feed. I feel so much better now.
To me, this is some of your best work yet. It merges art & science, poetry, philosophy and the wonderful wonders of the universe. Thank you for this. It’s incredible.
Like you said "Not special, all unique. Nothing and everything." Herein lies the hack. Like e.g. these two clever-right scientific researchers said: "Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it." Luke 17:33 and "Form is emptiness, emptiness is form." -Gautama Buddha
I wish I could think of a way to accurately sum up how much I love your content. You've been igniting my passion for science and philosophy since I was 14 years old (perhaps a little young for some of your jokes but who cares it got me here). Anyways thank you, that's all I got.
Many people are saying how existential and depressing this is, to the point where i was reconsidering watching it by how easily startled i get when people start discussing topics like this. Normally I'd feel helpless and dreaded but for some reason I just felt calm from start to end. The part of "We're going on an adventure" really resonated with me. Something about an adventure you can't opt out of. one that *everyone* has been and will be going through with us. really feels heartwarming and reassuring.
Hey exurb1a! I started watching your videos with "Unlimited Rice Puddings", and since, I've been hooked. From Sleep is Just Death Being Shy to No Colour Orange, all your videos tell such a unique narrative and story, I absolutely love all of them. Continue to do what you love, godspeed!
Please never stop doing what you're doing. Some episodes make me cry and some make me laugh harder than anything. Your take on existential nihilism is very dear to me.
This was one of my favourite videos of yours, probably because of the educational part but also because the existential crisis was compacted in the last part of the video and it left me wondering about the place I/we have in the universe but at the same time you made me want to come in this journey with you to find out the truth or at least find out some more questions we didn't even have before
Absolute props to the diagram work. I can't quite explain why it felt so acceptable to have the ether experiment explained via MS Paint. But it did. Cause it's you. So thanks 😂
I love to have realized that the mistakes and blunders are just as, if not more, important than the successes and the eureka moments ❤ makes it all feel a bit less pointless
It will never stop amusing me that the guy that solved the field equations that showed the boundery at which the escape velocity exceeds light speed is named... Black Shield.
There's also clever-accurate-but-wrong. That is to say, one can be clever, have devised a model or theory which is substantiated by empirical evidence; but still have their foundations be based upon an inaccurate premise, resulting in errors down the line that need to be adjusted.
The thing that helps me wake up in the morning and watch an exurb1a video without being clinically depressed is that, "We're all trying. The best we can. And that is all we can do."
As we grow, we stop being the main character, starting to be lesser than that which is around us. But by being the only meaningless thing, we become the only meaningful thing. You are everything, you are nothing. It's galactic gaslighting.
Exurb1a, you by far are my favorite storyteller/ UA-camr. I have 2 of your books and I love them. I love the philosophy in your videos too. I constantly keep an eye out for your vids. I even quote some in conversation if I get the chance. I really appreciate you and your content. Thank you so much for continuing. It's helped me through alot of things and alot of low points. Thank you my dear friend.
Been watching you for years (found you on accident) at this point and i've loved the progression, I thoroughly enjoy how your absurdism mixes with curiosity and fascination with the uncertainty and change of the universe. A rare but welcome treat as always!
Dude i had been watching your videos since a long time ago, Im Spanish and also since the first one (which i saw with subtitles) I managed to improve from my low level of English to being able of watching it without any subtitle nor stoping it. Also I want to thank you, the things you say, the way you match the pieces of your knowledge puzzle makes me feel understood. For years (15) since my first existencial life crysis come on an early childhood i had been thinking about meaning on everything. Thanks for making me wonder about new topics and companied in the familiar ones.
I am a huge fan of your content been watching you for 2 years and really your editing and sound mixing is incredible you are always on rhythm with the music and this level is nearly impossible to see on UA-cam keep on going
My family spent yesterday arguing over lunch about quantum physics and the speed of light. What amazing timing to get this video recommend. I understand nothing of this topic, or what they were arguing about, but after listening to this is feel like I can pretend to be a little bit smarter. Thank you existential turtle.
I love listening to your videos a lot. Every 3 or 4 months I take a relisten to a few of them. Its always a nice suprise when I stumble over a new video I haven't listened to yet.
I just wanted to show appreciation for your videos, which to me, are like sculptures. Each one, I appreciate as if it's the last, as they both inspire and humble me at the same time. The alloy you use is a perfect combination of intelligence, eloquence and wit. It goes without saying that person might be in turmoil at any given point and exposed to a fistful of scant words some might call a poem at precisely the right time, and be forever changed in a good way. That life is both harsh and worthwhile, and for a time I don't feel so alone here, because someone else clearly gets it. Thank you.
New Exurb1a videos never fail to make me smile, and laugh, then cry a bit, then smile some more. Every time this channel posts is an absolute treat for me and I will be forever grateful to the turtle man!
Black holes are the type of thing to see some photons in the cold depths of outer space and ask “Is anyone going to eat that” and not wait for an answer
Watching his videos is like stepping into a parallel universe where things are as they should be. It's nice to be reminded that there are still intelligent and sane people out there. It's within the small confines of the exurb1a community that I feel truly understood, and not crazy and judged...
His cosmic rant videos usually go a little like "Yeah on the grand scheme of things we may as well be a worthless insignificant spec of dust but that's kinda cool when you think about it"
I don’t know how I found this channel a few years ago, and I really have no idea what I’ve watched but I know I love it. I feel like I’m watching my chemistry and physics teacher on DMT and Cocaine
There is so much depth to every sentence you say. It is an entire mental adventure to listen to one of your videos. It is a journey through many thoughts and experiences you have felt. And you manage to express it in a simple enough way for us to understand, even though the medium of language can only express so much compared to the complexity of thoughts. Incredible work exurb1a
Came to find how Kierkegaard’s Either/Or would make me depressed again with now mixing with General Relativity -> pleasantly surprised by an educational lesson about physics from Depression Tortoise.
Once again I'm left speechless with a profound admiration and appreciation. Your videos are fantastic, your writing paired with your voice and manner of speaking match perfectly. Your videos feel like they are important. Important to you, to me, maybe to humanity as a whole. I really wish you all the best and look forward to see what else you will construct with that mind of yours.
@@GribborStudios It is impossible to know anything about that situation. The evidence accrued against him, especially in how it evidences the claims made against him, is notably very lacking. Some people take this as a sign that he is innocent, but it can also be imagined that even in the case where he is guilty, the amount of available evidence would only be as substantial. This hypothetical does nag at my mind when I watch this content but ultimately we can say nothing conclusive nor make the argument that it is immoral to partake in the man's content.

Once i had a dream at the end of a long backpack trip. The dream was about a black hole. In that dream i was very conscious of slowly dying and fading away in an empty nothingness. It felt so real, maybe because it was. Eventually i woke up with a scream. Definitely the weirdest dream i have ever had.
What makes this even funnier is I got really high last night and had this strong feeling a new Exurbia video would come out today. That feeling stuck with me at work all day today too and then I checked when I got home and sure enough here we are. 😁

Very glad to see a new masterpiece. I will not diss reviews anymore. If there is a 1 in 10^13 chance for a review to cause such videos, I say they are worth doing.
Omg I've been rewatching all your vids! Thank you so much for the upload Exurbia! Looking forward to the video already. You're such a good story teller and I aspire to be like you one day.
You should really only limit your aspirations to the story-telling aspect of exurb1a. Because as a person, you really, really should not aspire to be like him. Research the allegations against him and you'll know what I mean. Sorry to have to burst your bubble like this.
I remember being somewhat obsessed with black holes a while back, and this is one of the facts that weirded me out the most: You talked about the experience of getting sucked into a black holes and stretched apart, but for an onlooker, all they'd see is your body gradually slow in speed as you get closer to the black hole, moving slower and slower until you come to a stop, then fade to nothing. I don't know the science behind this, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I found it pretty weird and intriguing.
I just want to show my appreciation for your content. Your videos are the reason that I'm even writing in the first place. Whenever I want inspiration, I just watch one of your videos, because what I write is similar to how you 'perform' your videos {It's an art form, really}. Whenever I want inspiration, I just turn to my favorite manic, depressed, and super mentally stable writer. It doesn't matter which video {although, I liked how the absurdism video was made}, I will still just get inspiration from it. I'm writing a book {hopefully a screenplay at one point} that I'm writing to have the same rollercoaster feel as some of your videos. Maybe I could share it with you when it's finished {which it will probably never be}, but this comment has a low likelihood of being seen, so it won't happen. A man can dream. Love your stuff, keep doin' what you love.
If I ever stop telling myself ‘I’ll just write the 3 pages tomorrow,’ then sure. I’m working on another passion project, and it’s quite a daunting task to write 2 books at once. The one that you speak of will most likely end up as printer paper with some faded ink on it in the garbage, or a short story also in the same condition. If I ever do get to writing that short story, I’ll make sure to post it for people to make negative comments on it before throwing it out.
Interesting video. Personally, I feel that humanity as a species is currently somewhere between toddler and middle school. Looking forward when we get our license for FTL drive...
Yo.... I'm fucking speechless.. after my friend introduced me to you like literally 30 minutes ago I couldn't stop watching. This is absolutely amazing and so freaking entertaining and even a bit educational.. this depressed turtle really is the shit fucking hell...
I love how you’ve been able to help me understand all this crazy shit just as an interested laymen and make me laugh while pondering why I’m not getting some of this.

@@doctorchopper4124 ironic that I've just started watching the vids about this.
i feel like black holes are always described in the most terrifying and personal way. it's like the people explaining it are aiming to make children develop phobias about them... but like you said, it's not about us. we don't have to worry about being spaghettified because we are not even remotely close to a black hole in our human lifespans.
