    Greetings from Seattle and the PNW. I just shotgunned all of your episodes and thoroughly enjoyed them. I too am one that has been hanging back on the ranunculus sweater but just caked up the yarn to give it a go. I work as an ER nurse, which during this time in history is even more stressful than it was when I started my nursing career; let’s just say a long time ago😉. So knitting has kept me somewhat sane these past few years dealing with Covid. I have notes since I was a child as my mother taught us girls how to knit and crochet. However crochet is not my gig. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I look forward to your next episode and wish you always safe travels. Karyol

    Hi.I have really been enjoying your show,especially this episode. My grandparents came from Newfoundland.I never really knew them because I was born after they died. I did meet my grandmothers sister when she came down to Massachusetts for a visit with the family.It looks as though your Hap came in handy for your trip. Its good you had something warm.

    Thanks for another great episode! I love when you include the sights of the areas that you travel to - so very interesting. I'm currently crocheting a beach bag for my Cousin as a thank you gift. She loves going to the beach so I figured she will put it to good use. The reason for the thank you gift is that she volunteered to sit with my Husband at the
    hospital next month while I'm having open heart surgery. I thought that was so very kind of her.
    So I'll be looking for more of your videos while i'm recovering. I think they are great! They are so calming to me ... and boy do I need to de-stress. Love to see your yarn choices and lovely projects. Take care and safe travels.

    Hello, I’m a bit late to the party. Just found your podcast and will need to go backwards to catch up. I just had to reply and maybe help with your ssk problem. I notice you have stitch markers where you decrease. Do you think when you make an ssk the yarn is getting caught round the stitch marker? I say this because I had a similar problem with stitch markers which is why I stopped using them. The very rubbery ones like yours are a bit better but the yarn can get caught over them and this leaves a ladder. The other trick is to pull the yarn tight on the stitch after the ssk. This pulls the stitch tighter. Do try and master it because it makes the work more pleasing to have left and right decreases. I believe the M1 right and left is nonsense. Just do what you are doing there. The stitch doesn’t lean. By the way, you could use spare coloured yarn as stitch markers. These cause no problems. 🌺

    Hello from Arizona, USA. I love this episode and subscribed. You are an amazing knitter so knit the techniques that bring you joy. If you use M1L and K2tog just be consistent with your application. I'm not sure why you are getting ladders. I decided to try Hiya Hiya Flyers (like flexi-flips) for the first time on a pair of socks....it's not hard , just new so I need to give them some time (I don't like dpns)...if I find they are not bringing me joy then I will go back to using 2 circ needles, magic loop or 9" circ. To your problem with the ssk - maybe you could try another method with the same left-leaning result: slip 1 stitch purlwise with the yarn in the back, knit one stitch by holding the yarn quite tight and then slip the first stitch over the second. And you will - as said - have a left-leaning decrease which maybe look a bit neater then the ones which you do not like.

    When it comes to SSK’s, I know your pain. Try this…Keeping the stitches snug, Slip as if to knit, knit into the back of the next stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. On the next row, knit the stitch previously slipped over THRU THE BACK LOOP. This move eliminates the zigzag effect you get when knitting a regular row between the SSK rows. For a good, flat central double decrease, check out Patty Lyons tutorial Better CDD (Central Double Decrease). Both are life changers in the knitting universe.

    We were in Newfoundland in May 2017, absolutely beautiful, can’t wait to go back one day! You mentioned the Cumulus Blouse in your queue, I made it for my daughter in December 2020, Petite Knits patterns are written very well. And just a comment about your dislike of SSK. Something I picked up from a sock pattern designer was, on the next round (if decreasing every second round), to knit through the back of the loop of that previous SSK stitch. This works great for sock decreases, gusset and toes, it just looks a little nicer as the ktbl seems to tighten it up.

    Hi Leanne ! My flghts are overseas . 1-2 Times a year . I would LOVE to knit on a plane ( at least some of 7-8 hours of flight) but I never even attempted to bring my needles with me due security check point. Somehow I am convinced that they would take away my needles bc they are so pointy lol . Actually there’s possibility that I read some story about them taking away knitting needles.... Anyway ...a am asking you ! Professional!!! Can I bring my needles to the plane in my carry on bag ? 🙏

    • @theknittystew
      @theknittystew  2 роки тому

      Diana I can say with confidence that Canadian airport security (CATSA) will not confiscate your knitting needles. I’ve had to check my needles into my large suitcase once flying out of Cabo Mexico, as they apparently only allow needles that are 6” or less. But I’d been multiple times before that one incident. What I would encourage you to do is look Google the airport security section website of the airport in the country you are flying into and search 🔍 for “Knitting Needles” Missing out on 7-8 hours of knitting would be devastating!!

    Me again! I'm watching your latest episode while I knit & you're talking about laddering. I knit a lot of socks using sock weight woolly & rustic yarns...usually using a size 1 dpns or 1.5. I used to struggle with laddering so much. I recently watched a video done by the "Crazy Sock Lady" & she shared how to avoid ladders! When you're knitting from 1 dpn to the next, instinct tells us to knit that 1st stitch & pull it as tight as possible BUT she said to not do that. Knit it with regular tension & after knitting the 2nd stitch, give the yarn a tug. I'm happy to say that I tried this & my latest pair of socks is ladder free! Hope it works for you! Katt

    Greetings from Clyde NY (in the hinterlands between the Finger Lakes and Lake Ontario). For your SSK, have you tried this? Slip 2 st knitwise, then insert left needle thru front loops of these stitches and knit (essentially knitting thru the back loops - you can also slip the 2 stitches back to the left ndl and ktbl). This orients the stitches so they lie flat and snug. Safe travels!

A comfort to have some reality to a knit podcast, real life work and knit problems, we are not all perfect and skip some of the details. I don't like the SSK'S either especially on socks. Two together always seems sturdier. MIR or MIL is a trade off. I've been working on a "PetiteKnit Ankers Summer Shirt, now that I've deciphered the pattern it's great, but as winter in Northern Alberta looms closer, will probably make it long sleeve.LoL. I am one of those bingers- on episode 5 now- NEWFOUNDLAND- so jelly, as it is on my bucket list. Started knitting Newfy mittens from the Saltwater Mittens book. I find my sensitive skin is ok with woolier wool on my hands. The first pair nearly broke my brain, but I have now made a few and I understand the construction and make fewer mistakes. I did make 2 pairs of trigger mitts- one pair for my very knitworthy shirttail relative who works in a dairy in northern Alberta and he LOVES them. The second pair I made for my very urban son in Ottawa which ended in many jokes about pointing directions- I told him the next pair will only include a middle finger (although that would be ridiculous to knit). That Stria hat turned out great- I have debated, so I think you have inspired me to give it a try. Your hap is magnificent- I am not attempting the name- over my pay grid- lol! I am currently knitting one of my trademark baby hoodies (knitting for babies is grand, as they never complain) and using a bamboo cotton combo that is surprisingly stretchy and very soft. Fingers crossed it survives wet blocking as baby things need to be able to survive a trip to the washing machine and the occasional oops in the dryer. Keep on with your podcasts, this old gran is loving them- vicarious and inspirational travel and knitting- two of my loves.
