In this video, I test how well the 2020 MacBook Air with intel 10th gen quad-core i5 processor and g7 iris plus graphics does in terms of video editing. I test both 1080P and 4K video editing with h.264 mp4 and h.265 hevc footage and also test some benchmarks like Bruce X, Geekbench 5 CPU and GPU Metal as well as Blackmagic raw braw speed test.
I also connect an eGPU with AMD Radeon RX 580 graphics card to see how much it helps for video playback smoothness and for rendering video.

Thank you Max! This is the video I have been waiting for.
FYI, if a person uses two different GPUS the iGPU will still be used for playback of h.264/265 files. The eGPU will only come into play when effects are applied and/or need to be rendered. ;)
Because you know you use new update final cut Straight to old final cut and use external GPU
Where is the MBA i7 test ?
Max Yuryev what program are you using to monitor cpu, gpu and temp in the menu bar?
These videos are some of my favorites. Everybody isn't trying to buy a specced out MBP for $2000+. But like myself, there are a lot of content creators trying to figure out the least expensive laptop that can handle the basic and essentials of video editing. I'm not trying to edit the Matrix in 8k. But something that can handle some 4k with decent performance and absolutely crush 1080p. Thanx Max for your service to video editors not trying to break the bank. I know I'm not the only one.
Amen brother. You nailed the demographic there.
Second this!!! YESS
I bought a macbook air in January and honestly if i had watched this review before i would have saved for a macbook pro instead. I only use imovie but every time i playback a clip 3-4 times the app freezes its so annoying. I want to upload final cut but am worried. 😥
@@SusanAyinkamiye I'm in the market right now for a device under $1400 and honestly, from everything I've seen, if you're trying to do creative task which are usually graphic/processor intensive, the Air isn't the best option. I've narrowed my decision down to the MBP 13 or 14" refresh and compare it money wise to the iPad Pro. Because I plan on doing some 4K editing. Nothing crazy, but still 4k editing. And when you think about it, a device in 2020 for $1000 should be able to give you that. You might be able to sell your Air and cut your losses if you're trying to get into video editing and get a more powerful device.
@@urbanesportsreport51 thanks for your feedback. I'll definitely replace it hopefully beginning next year
I didn’t understand a single thing in this video. I think the MacBook Air will be just fine for me.

@@khaledannoyed2778 wait i actually came across a vid a few weeks ago with the brand new mackbook air that most recently came out ( 2020 ) and they edited and rendered their vid on there ( it wasn’t ae) but they said the rendering took a lot faster so that must be a sign that editing is good on the macbook air?? idk
Pretty sure Apple didn't change the thermals so people would buy the 2019 MBP, or else everyone's just gonna get the Air. Which means decreased profits, excess inventory, and bad product differentiation. Also, I feel like the vast majority of people buying the Air isn't going to do video editing or anything extensive so Apple didn't have incentive to change the cooling.
I get it they wanna design the laptop around the kind of customer they think are gonna buy it. But this laptop is crazy expensive and performance per dollar is really low. In Italy if you wanna buy a reasonable configuration (i5+16gb+512gb) you are gonna spend 1779€ = 1986.70$.
I'm starting to think that this laptop makes sense only with the base configuration. It's just an expensive thin client. Anything else is something I would not advise.
(For reference the base model with an i5 (+50€) is 1.279€ = 1428.32$)
@@NicolaMastrandrea It shouldn't be a surprise that the performance to dollar isn't good since the customers buying the Air don't need the performance which is why Apple didn't change the thermals (even though they should) because they had no incentive to since it would be wasting money/lower profits. Why fix what works?
There are also other premium laptops at the same price as the Air like the Dell XPS, Lenovo ThinkPads, and Microsoft Surface. If you're only looking at specs then of course any of those may look like a questionable choice, but the Air is the go-to laptop for anyone that wants a laptop with great build quality, display, speakers, and trackpad, which you can't get with a sub $1000 laptop. Apple products also lasts a very long time and has much higher resell value. So it's a pretty good deal depending what "value" means to you.
All it needed was a damn heat pipe and fin
@@NicolaMastrandrea Apple products outside USA have insane/crazy price... I live in Brazil and man... Even for a middle class person, it's unreachable to get MacBook here
yup.. release 16" mbp with everything updated but a hefty price tag of $2200+, release the air but with thermal issues and advise people to use a pro if they use it for long periods of time. just release a 14" mbp ffs
Thank you for the review. I do wish UA-camrs will take a look at graphic performance for design work and not only video editing as the ultimate test. I think there are a lot of Mac users who use Mac OS for Photoshop, Pixelmator etc. who would like to know how these smaller Macs perform.
After you plug in your external gpu, you have to logging out and than back. How the Mandalorians say: This is the way
Hi Max, Love your videos! Did Final Cut Pro freeze up any for you on the Macbook Air during any of your testing? About every 15 minutes, I get the spinning wheel. That said, when it is working, I'm not seeing any slowdown when editing 4K 30FPS video. My video has the AAC, H.264 codec.
Thank you for this, it's super helpful to know that this Macbook Air can handle pretty much the simplest video editing. So it's safe to say that it can also handle artworks (Illustrator, Photoshop) right? Thank you!
I would love to do artwork and I just got my MacBook Air but idk where to start with it 😭 please do you have any ideas how to start? It’s okay if you don’t ❤️
Nashia Rainey i guess you could start with your illustrating program of choice! I use Adobe Illustrator. It has other free alternatives you can search online if Illustrator isn’t the app for you ☺️
Gioia Mariella , For graphic design do you think MacBook Air 2020 i5 will have any problem ?? Will there be any heating or fan noise ? I am not a professional and have graphic design as one of my subject in college .
I'd love to hear from you as I am working on Illustrator and Photoshop too! I was planning to get 13" MBP M1 next year (for the 2nd gen). But then.. I am petite and carrying 2010 13" MBP has been such a big load for me. So I am desperate on picking quality or my back (and backpain!). Please do an update once you put your hands on the 2020 MBA! Thanks before =)
Oh god i just got notified of this!! I hahe a friend who uses a macbook air for illustrator and premiere and they dont have problems with it! I guess its just a matter of how often u use the laptop or how long u are using it?
Everything will go well intill the MacBook air starts hitting the brakes on render.
Could you pls make a review of this MacBook Air performing Ps and Ai. Is it useful to run adobe programs?
So my question is...what’s the point in upgrading this machine to the $100 more quad core processor if it still isn’t good for video editing?
Fredrick Weathers for search in UA-cam. Like most people with a MacBook Air do
when you upgrade this machine with extra 100 dollars then it should run fine with video editings , music production and those kinda stuff
Redwan Hossain what do we need to upgrade ??

Hey Max, I hope all is well. We met at Sony Camera Camp and I wanted to touch base with you about comparing this maxed out version of the i7 Macbook Air with the new 13 inch MB Pro, a similar model for video editing. For about $2000 they are virtually the same. If your output is in 1080p then is the Macbook Air just as good? I know I have heard fan issues being more on the MB Air. I already have a 4k monitor and plenty of external SSD drives to edit off of. I also don't mind letting my projects render overnight if needed so I'm never in a time crunch. Thoughts?
I also noticed for about $2000 you can get a killer version of a laptop from the Dell XPS 13inch lineup and also get a 4k screen, headphone jack, and sd card reader.
Thanks for the review. I’m a university student who does occasional editing for assignments. So I’m not using heavy tasks. I think this is a good choice.
Did you face any issues ?
Would you say that the MacBook Air can handle regularly photo editing well? Does it also struggle with Lightroom too? I ordered the MacBook Air i5 with 16GB RAM 512GB.
Kerem Taskin This is my biggest question too. If it can handle Lightroom well without burning up my lap I’m looking at getting the same model you ordered.
Uvaldo M i too have the query nd need a rply fir d same!!!....
I would like to know answer for that too...
I have the air i7 16GB Ram and 512. So far it powers through Lightroom and fans start hitting harder in photoshop. It works well though but as said fans are just almost always going to be there. Im probably going to have to return it because I mostly use it for music and while it does handle Logic Pro well, the fans won't be good for recording. So I think it's a good computer for all photographic needs but other types of creating might have to look elsewhere
@@anguishedspongebob useful info. I want to use it for recording too.
Hey Max. Thank you for that video. I have been thinking about getting the MBA 2020 for some smaler DavinciResolve jobs and tests.
Don‘t you think together with an eGPU at least the 4-core modle could work fine?
Hi Max, great review as always. Is the i7 chip just a none starter as the i5 runs at 100C when stretched a bit? Also sorry I'm more a pc person so bought HP which had good keyboard over 2019 MB Air due to keyboard and thermals issue. My HP fans cools CPU when running a virus scanning software which seems to be more intensive as using a different antivirus software. Do virus programs for Mac os Catalina have same issue with taxing the CPU and fans kicking in? Or do Mac's suffer more from malware than viruses? Thanks for any feedback from anyone 👍
You should reboot the laptop after connecting the EGPU, just to confirm that the M Air is not capable.

I edit around 1 video per month, editing is definitely a side activity for me - I guess this MacBook Air will do the job ?
I currently use a late-2016 base new MacBook Pro (non-touch bar) so with the 2core CPU...I'm guessing performance will be actually better on the MacBook Air no?
How about export times though? Would be curious to actually compare times :)
Hi Max, thanks for your video reviews! Really professional, and it's awesome to see how the different models compare. So question... do you have any experience when comparing machines for things like live-streaming 1080p? I'm using a video switcher, ManyCam, or maybe OBS. I'm using two c922 Logitech cams that I switch between, and sometimes run at the same time, and then pipe them into the browser as a virtual webcam. Curious how performance compares when using this type of setup vs simply video exporting?

Exactly what i was looking for! And so precise!
What model MacBook Pro would you recommend, I don’t wanna buy the MacBook Pro with the keyboard problem?
Buy the 16 inch MacBook pro if you can afford, wait for the 14 inch MacBook pro coming in the next two months if you can't
What about increasing the RAM in the 2020 MacBook air to 16 GB, would that help the exporting performance? Overall performance?? Increasing the RAM on an Air is still cheaper than a base MacBook Pro (upgraded to 256GB ssd).
Thanks for the great video comparisons.. really helpful.
Increase the ram to 16gb, get the top tier i7 cpu and keep it plugged in while battery is at 100% and no charging is needed, performance would’ve been better.
I’m also wondering this. If you can edit photos and do some 4K video editing. That’s all I can ask for
Nope. Macbook Air is made for fast browsing (Intel's Turbo boost makes it snappy). Intense workloads (100% CPU for more than 5 minutes) will thermal throttle. To get better performance you'd need to buy a macbook pro
João Vítor Guidi but you can use it for netflix and stuff tho, right?
Drone footage always drop frames even on good specs hardware because of unoptimised compression.
Yes , So you recommend getting Air or MacBook Pro is perfect solution for this ?

You can go with windos laptops if you budget is low ( asus ... ) But look out for the software compabilities that for which os it is made for.
My case majority went with windows and my budget was 1.50lakh inr I went with windos coustom build and now I'll buy macbook pro 16" once I get in for more software like finalcut and all I'll shift to MacBook
Also one thing to remember portability, in my case I just need it to be in my stuido so I went for pc first as per need and budget , in your case if you need something portable and below 1lakh inr budget go for windows laptops
What's the oldest MacBook air that is useable for 4k editing without using proxies?
So basically - it’s good enough, right? For basic final cut editing + GarageBand midi recording?
Will you recommend this for graphic designing?
Thanks for this really informative video, Max. I already ordered the Macbook Air, and getting a MacBook Pro isn’t really an option for me right now. If you’re exporting from FCPX and don’t mind waiting for it to finish, what’s the downside? Will I damage the MacBook Air or is the waiting time the worst of it? Thanks again.
I would use a tool like turbo boost switcher to turn off turbo boost. It may or may not make exporting take 20% longer BUT it will keep your Mac running cooler and quieter.
@@MaksimYuryev Love your channel, man. It's my go-to for tech info. Really thorough and objective, and very helpful especially for tech-challenged folks like me.
Hello, I just wanted to ask you a question. I'm giving my brother the 13" MacBook Pro from 2017, because I just can't stand the keyboard and I prefer a lighter computer, much interested in the new MacBook Air base model i3. However, on occasion, and not often, I do put videos up on UA-cam from iMovie. And also use apps like, 4k video download and DVD ripper...Am I going about doing the right thing by purchasing the new air? Especially since I seldom use those power boosting apps? I should also note, I always delete files and videos from my computer after I am down with them, or I put them on an external hard drive, so that should should help with keeping enough free space. I am about worried though when it comes to those power boosting apps...Will it significantly slow down, say when I share a file or convert some thing on iMovies or dvd ripper? Please let me know what you think. I really want that new air and not the new pro.
Okay, M1 is incredible, no doubt.
My new question is - how is the screen size for video editing on the Air?
Do you feel limited with FCPX? Is a 16\15" a world difference in comparison?
I currently have a 2016 MBP maxed out, and wanna go to a lighter experience and something that's easier to put in my bag.
Thanks in advance!
well the eGPU is not used since you did not connect a monitor to it and set the primary display to that monitor that is connected to the eGPU and have FCPX running on that monitor as well ;)
Great review Max, I was wondering doe, how well does it perform with regular photo editing? Does it struggle with Lightroom or Photoshop? I´m really considering this laptop since I need to upgrade mine (almost 10 years old) and pretty much only use those two programs on regular basis. Thank you so much, and take care! Great content, keep up the good work!
How about if you get i7 specs with MacBook Air 2020?
How about editing 1080p videos? Does it freezes a lot? Planning to buy my first macbook. Thank you for answering my query. 😉
So, we'll have to duck tape the e-gpu on the back of macbook air and walk into starbucks now?
frappucino gpucino
Just curious what version of Catalina was on your MacBook Air? My setup is a Mac Mini 2018 with a Blackmagic eGPU Pro. Short story is that until I installed the 10.15.4 update Final Cut just would not utilize the external eGPU hardly at all and kept using the internal GPU which of course throttled and heated up like crazy. This was the case for rendering and exporting. Since the update it now barely uses the internal GPU at all and is not throttling up. Rendering and exporting is way faster. A complete reversal from before the update.
Would upgrading to 16G of RAM make a difference in the computer’s ability to perform 4K video editing? Or is there no way around that fact that it gets hot when exporting?
Bruce Tanner need to know this answer!
There won’t be difference
Wait for the mb pro 14

Hi ... why aren’t you using compressor? Get your video files into Apple ProRes. So it don’t have to render in FCPX when importing your files.
The highest I generally go for HD video is 1080, so I am sure that MacBook Air can handle it, especially if I buy that model configured with 16 GB of RAM.

Hello Max! Thanks for your videos and your honesty in making this review. I would like to ask you if you can advice a laptop around the same price of the new macbook air that is optimal for video editing. Thanks!
Hi Max, thank you for this review. I am using FCPX for my editing and was thinking about getting a lightweight smaller macbook for traveling and editing on the road. I saw the results here, however, I would like to ask what would be the h.264 export speeds, as that should be done with cpu hardware acceleration, would that be faster way to export? Also I thought that macbook air 2020 having 10gen cpu with 10bit 265 hardware processing would mean smooth playback of footage /eg from XT4/ what is your experience on that? Thank you.

So just to clarify I don’t have a very big graphics card inside my 2017 MacBook Pro as a 4K footage now if I were to buy the EGPU what does speed up my video editing it all around performance on my computer?
If I choose the i7 one, will it be better for 4k short video (20min~) editing? Is it stable to run 4k videos on iMovie, not Final Cut with i5 chip?
It would run better on an i7, but the more ram you have, the better. I'd reccomend the stock 8gb, but if you feel like paying $200 for 16gb, then be my guest

This was very helpful in answering the question about rendering video. I’ve been tasked with making minor edits to a weekly webinar video and then rendering them. It’s taking 2.5-3 hours on my 7 year old MacBook Air. Since it’s time to replace this computer I wanted to see if the 2020 would be up to the job. It sounds like it won’t.

Keeping it plugged into electricity and not relying solely on the battery would’ve helped out a little in my experience
Macbooks don't work that way. It would help on a Windows laptop since the components are power hungry and the battery just doesn't provide it. Where's Macbooks are always better optimised with MacOS, so it barely makes any difference whether plugged or unplugged.

Could the new i5 or i7 MacBook Air work well for software development? My thinking is that compilation is not as sustained as video exporting so the thermal throttling issue should not be as bad. Thoughts?

Have you tried plugging an external monitor to the egpu and closing the lid? This may force the Mac to use the egpu.
I am using lenovo machine with old pentium prosesor with only 4gb ram, i usually do photo editing on it with capture one pro software and i am totally comfartable with it, now my question is will the macbook air 2020 base model will be suffciant for me.. i am planning to upgrade to a laptop with atleast 99% srgb display and i am fedup with windows updates (the moment i turn on the wifi on windows laptop it just slows down horible)
1. Is macbook air is suffciant for me
2. Does mac have same problum with o s updated like windows
3. What about the heating
How about the i7...is it worth it
Would be nice to see how davinci resolve handles, specifically the EGPU, as it relies more heavily on Graphics and is designed to work well with EGPU's as the company makes one that beefs up a lot of mobile set ups. Final Cut is notoriously worse as far as i am aware at load balancing which is why so many professional outfits have been switching to Davinci. I Liked the detail in the video. was disappointed that Davinci was not looked at at all though.
Can we modify the heat design? Like adding something that connects the processor to the fan. I bet someone somewhere in China is already doing it. And I would like to see what will happen if we put an external fan or water cooling under the MBA. Please! You and just josh are the only one who has been doing this very well. Others just talk about the iPad Pro which I don’t care😂
it looks like they just could've decreased the size of the left battery and moved the fan down a bit. That would open some space for a better cooling design
Can i edit 4k video footage shot on my phone on the base macbook air or is it going to be a painstaking experience? Im only considering upgrading to mcbook air 2020 because it looks cool. 😅
Can you rerun the Egpu test when you 1st connect the egpu, go into program folder , rightklick fcpx and change the setting to prefer external gpu and then start fcpx------ aargh.. now some weeks later.. newer versions of fcpx decide themselves which gpu they use.. I found out that the performance boost of an egpu (I use a Vega 56) is not that much.. it helps .. but I’d suggest try before buy.. if I only bought it for vid editing only I also clearly would be disappointed !
Great review Max!
I’m started to take UA-cam more seriously so I will be editing gopro footage as well as some tiktok videos. Do you think this computer is a good option for me?
