The ONE I would buy.. bhpho.to/2Usv6TE
Excellent work as always. Apple needs to run the pro machines. This test with an entry level seems like a rute thinkg to o the the machines, but they are performing. Are you going to do one with Capture one, lightroom Pixelmator etc?
lease test dji 4k60 drone footage on both m1
no more proxy!!!!!!!!!
Hey Max, you know what would be interesting? Connecting those Macs to the 6K XDR display (and normal 4K ones too maybe). It is my understanding according to some tweets that the display pipeline has been revamped and connecting an external monitor is close to instant and changing resolutions (default, scaled and others) is “don’t blink” fast.
Where can I buy the shirt/sweatshirt? Sorry I know it’s not computer related.
Man, your coverage on the new M1 is by far the best on UA-cam. Thanks a lot for all your content! :D
The moment i saw 10bit 422 run smothly! Im sold!
Mindblowing🤯🤯
I'm so ready for the 16" Apple Silicon MBP!
Think there's going to be more available ram? Has anyone tested after effects?
This is what I'm waiting for!
You gonna have to wait a year or more for that.
@@bushgreen260 Sad but true, hopefully proper adobe support by then.
Me too!!! Can they please come out with it now
I still don't believe how this channel didn't hit 1M subs!!!! Max, appreciate your efforts on delivering great content! Keep up the great work! Regards from Brazil!
Hey man I appreciate all the hard work. You’re absolutely correct people don’t realize how much work it takes to put out a 10 minute UA-cam video. I have a super small channel and I don’t do technical reviews like yours and each 10 minute video can take me about 10 hours
I'm a Smöl techtuber too and it takes 6h to make something kinda okay for me too.
Hear hear.
My sentiments exactly! @EnforcerMan if your channel is small, then mine's is atomic haha!
@@RylisPro haha... we all have been there. It will come with time... I took a 5 sec peek at your channel... one feedback I have is around your thumbnails. Make them more simple and easy to read and pop... when someone scrolling the results really fast, you wanna make them stop. Good luck brother
@@EnforcerMan ok cool thanks!
Maaaan. Just when I was set on buying the Air you drop this 😂 I really appreciate how much effort you’re putting into these! Keep it up
Really impressed how much technical details you go into. Most other reviewers don’t go into such details
Max, thanks again! You are always so detail with the reviews.
Thanks again for this, exactly what I was waiting for
Thank you Max for this video! The real world usage you detailed throughout the video was awesome- I think for many of us Macbook Pro users the most demanding thing we do is video editing, and seeing it in such a visual way really took my breath away.... seen a lot of people's benchmarks and gone, cool, that's fast, but seeing you scrub over 4k video with LUTS with it being buttery smooth really blew me away
YASSS! The video I've been waiting for! Thanks Max!
The only review that answered all my questions. Thanks Max! 🙌
Thanks for these videos Max! So time consuming but super worth it for all of us💪🏼
Thanks for this Max. I’ve been driving myself mad trying to decide which route to go!
Have you decided yet?😄

I got my M1 MacBook Pro today and I'm still here watching videos on it, I came from a air 2019 and its night and day , UA-cam in 4K is smooth , buttery smooth! Keep up the videos love it!
I'll be coming from the Air 2015, so I'm sure that would be light-years of a difference lol.

Great analysis as always. Thanks Max.
Great video!
Thanks so much for all the hard work. It really helped me to make my decision.
A really comprehensive video for editors thinking of buying this computer. Thank you.
Nice vid as always
Your channel is too underrated. You are a legend!
Max, fantastic video! Best Apple M1 review video on UA-cam. Thank you! You not only show where it excels (and surprises) but you also show its limitations and direct comparisons to Intel Macs to give a great reference. I really appreciate the work you put into these videos. It is very evident in the quality and depth of the info you provide and your passion for this stands head and shoulders above the rest. Again, thank you!
Incredible....Buying one.
THANKS for the hard work❤️
Information overload!! Thank you so much
Thanks for your video
I think this is my favorite M1 review channel.
Finally, a somewhat real world review! Earned my subscription!😉☺
Incredible video man. Super informative. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into these!

@@applesilicon6863 hope you're gonna get better in future and a bit less pricey too.
@@Anaaskhan7246 I feel like the base price fine. But the upgrades man... RAM and SSD should not be that expensive.
@@kevin.callens I just hope that someday we can go back more towards the $499 price point at which the first Mac mini started. I know there is inflation, but even the base iPad has become cheaper over time, despite inflation. If the mini were $599 with the base model in 2022, I would be happier, and even more people would be able to buy one. But with the performance you get with the M1, I guess Apple needs to first introduce the M1X and M2, or else an even cheaper mini M1 would be too much value for the money, right? Can't have that! Haha! But I do think Apple really needs to flood the market with M processor Macs that have more value than Intel Macs could ever offer. Heck, HomePod mini starts at $99, so Apple could move slightly more towards value.
Apple silicon is BEYOND a
One more thing announcement
It’s a whole another league
So can’t wait for iMAC Pro version of the M1!
Hoping for a micro atx form factor, with ssd bays.
That would be slower than the 2017 iMac Pro, just wait for faster M chips specialy the GPU (btw I have a 10 core 64 GB Vega 64)
It probably won't run an M1 per se.
thx a lot! Now i going to order one
Just wanted to thank you guys for your hard work on these informative videos!
We've been working our butts off. So tired lol.
@@MaksimYuryev you’re appreciated!
Max, your the best mate....Hands down!!!!
Great video. What an amazing 1st gen Chip from Apple. Max, my 2019 MacPro with the 16 core, and the same video card as yours, plays the R5 10bit footage perfectly smoothly. Timeline skimming is also super smooth. No render, or transcoding needed. I can even add luts and color grade and no problem. On Resolve, it does slightly stutter while skimming, but timeline playback is perfectly smooth. Wonder if the 16 core has some other advantage. Not sure though
The problems lies in CPU encoding/decoding processes on hardware level. If required hardware codes are missing than there's only one chance how to playback such type of file smoothly: as much as possible cores in CPU.
Great content!
Max is the best! Cheers
Thanks for this vid!!!
Dude your review / testing is insanely thorough. I edit on multiple softwares on a very powerful PC. Thank you.
Got my new Mac Mini M1 and I love it! It’s a whole new era. Computing has changed forever.
what are your findings .. do you use davinci resolve... how is the performance in fusion? thanks
thxalot for sharing like always 💕
You are testing with 8K and 6K and saying this machine is great. And this makes me sooo Happy cause iam shooting at 1080p and the editing would be a heaven for me. Cant wait to get this on my hands❤❤❤
I really appreciate your video ✌🏻
Thx for the tests brother! Now to find someone to buy my 16 inch. Lol
And agreed - making UA-cam videos takes way more time than I ever anticipated!

Thx, really great video.
Awesome thank you. Premiere I use. But just standard 4k do this will be fine. Looking forward to the rest of the tests.
great video !
100% what everyone needs right now! 👍
Ok I'm buying this
Mindblowing
*my thoughts: final cut pro is amazing.*
*love that software.*
Thank you for all your hard work making your YT video's. I value your content as presented because it provides me with a wealth of information on how the new Apple tech operates. Very interesting and fun to watch this type of content. I don't edit video for a job. I do light video editing in iMovie on my 2019 4K iMac. I mainly am a hobby photographer of flowers n foliage. But I find your Apple tech videos about video editing fascinating nonetheless. I definitely also like your iPhone 12 videos as they let me know real world results from your tests and comparisons of other smart phones.
Well, as an R5 owner I don’t think I really need to wait for 16” MBP. 8K playback is good enough for me as I will be shooting sparingly with that resolution. If it can handle the 4K120p 1800mbps HEVC from the R5 with correction and a LUT...that is amazing for the price.
Thank you so much for this! Learned a lot. I am seeing a pattern. 1. M1s strength seems to be H265, as long as your editing an H265 footage at ANY resolution and exporting it at H265 it will beat everything. 2. The ram may improve the graphics performance too since its a UNIFIED MEMORY, with 16GB RAM, that might leave 10GB Memory for the GPU and it might help push these RAW formats forward.
That sounds pretty logical yeah
Thanks for a great test! Lots of editors will switch to MAC!
Thanks so much for this Max! If you can, please make sure to include R3D Raw 6K or even 8K Footage in the big test! Would also be great to see how the mac mini holds up. For 700$ this might be the best bang for the buck editing machine ever.
This is an excellent video
I can't believe this performance on the 8Gb model. I just bought the 16gb RAM M1 Mac Mini, and this video has sufficiently pumped me up for the delivery!
Awesome 🤩👨💻👨💻
I'm very confused by all of this LOL I'm a Mac mini user for years and I have the i7 32 gig option. It seems like we're not going to need more than 16 gigs of RAM? I work with really big raw files for my photography and this is really blowing my mind. I can't decide if I want to buy the computer you just bought or if I should wait it out to see if something even better for not much more money comes out that I should buy. That's what's driving me crazy about this whole thing
@@mastrorj68 Yeah, I think if you have a really good setup and you do pro work, it can go either way. I’m trying to do photo/video work on a 2012 iMac right now, so it’s a no-brainer for me 😂
Thank you so much for this! This is history in the making, and your scientifically sound full breakdowns have so much value to this filmmaker tech community. Is this not the first chip to feature hardware accelerated encode/decode of h.265/HEVC?!
Well, it would correct to put it in the following way:
1. HEVC 8-bit (h.265) Supported hardware encode/decode acceleration on all Intel Macs date back to 2018
2. HEVC 10-bit (h 265). Supported hardware encode/decode acceleration on all 10th generation Intel chips: MacBook Air 2020, MacBook Pro 2019/2020, MacBook Pro 16".
3. Once h.266 will be released, M1 one will be obsolete as well.
I will buy it for FHD video editing! it's beyond perfection for me.
Thanks Max! Super helpful as always. I plan to shoot 4k raw with my ursa mini and it seems that this machine will be more than adequate.
Thank you Max! Looking forward to taking delivery of my M1 MBP next week. I'm currently using a 2015 13" base model MBP and I'm really impressed how it handles 4K A7III footage in FCP. 4K iPhone footage brings it to its knees though lol.
2015 13" iPhone 4k brings down to knees only due to missing CPU hardware codes of HEVC aka h.265. The same gonna happen with M1 when new codec will be introduced h.266
I purchased the 13 inch pro 16 gb 1tb ssd can’t wait to edit on it
Thank you very much for this Max! I am very impressed what Apple delivered here. Can hardly wait until my MB pro13" arrives. Guess with 16 Gigs of RAM one should see also a slight increase on performance.
Thanks for your videos! Can you do a video with the new mac mini?
I have a mini on order. Really looking forward to it. I have 2008 Mac Pro and 2013 15” Mac book pro. Both are way past their age and struggling.
Dig the 60's look
That is incredibile.
I will wait for next iMac, and I hope to see 32" and M2 maybe (or M1x2 inside) and I can live with that :D
Спасибо Макс!
I'd love to see a video on 8GB vs 16GB for non-Pro workflows. Things like many Safari tabs, a Zoom call going on, Spotify playing, maybe a few Google Docs tabs editing files, a powerpoint file or large textbook PDF file open. 9to5Mac had a good article on the 8GB of RAM models. Seems like even if it has to go into swap memory it's still pretty quick.
Definitely interested for the macbook air base to be tested like this
Thanks indeed!! you always expose the truth!!!
I love you man
I just got the M1 mac, they only had it in one city in my 200-mile radius. It is a fantastic device, the speed and the thermals alone makes it worth it. You can actually use this laptop, on your lap.
Thanks for these tests Max! I know there's a billion tests you've yet to do but I'd also be interested in an 8k render as this was weirdly slow on my system. FCP and my 2018 MBP 13in could just about edit it - although it was v choppy - but the export took hours and hours! I've got plenty of 8k R5 clips I can send you if you need them.
Forgive me Gordon I am not a troll just intrigue. Who watch in 8k TV these days? Are cinema movies encoded in 8K? Really interested to know.
@@Totustuus2022 N-K footage is about options. You can punch in on 8K footage 2x and still have a 4K image. It’s also a way to somewhat “future proof” your footage for higher res down the line.
That said, the “I don’t see a reason therefore the question is...”; that has gotta stop. Our personal experience is not a representative sample of the world.
I think these processors have some codec specific hardware. It explains these blazing speeds for particular apps and footage.
@@Totustuus2022 today not many people, but good quality 8k can generate fantastic looking 4k by oversampling, or allow you to punch in. So while the actual output may not be in 8k, the 8k footage gave you benefits in the edit.
@@cameralabs Thank you. Understood.
Please include this test in the future round-up video: Time it takes to transcode ProRes RAW into 12-bit ProRes 4444 XQ (for a Resolve user). Thanks!
Thanks for this vídeo Max ! No more question about if the MBP M1 is the choice for me and yes, is ! Im a fcp x user
I'm looking forward to test 16GB one!
Max, as always, thank you for your tireless commitment to detail in your excellent videos. I shoot 10-bit 4K HLG in Long GOP on my Panasonic GH5 and I am forced use proxies because Long GOP simply won't playback smoothly on my Intel MBP. When you have time, assuming you still have your GH5, I'd love to hear if you can get 10-bit 4K HLG Long GOP to payback smoothly with no dropped frames on your M1 Air or MBP. Thank you!
to do some fair test , we should test some effects and multilayer compositng
Thanks for the video. Can you also talk about other workflows ? I’m pretty sure most laptop users are not video editors but programmers, students, designers, architects, etc. But I noticed everybody talks about video editing 🤷🏽♂️
The best reviewer for mac
Thanks for this one. Great comparison in a week after the M1 release. Really appreciate your effort. Waiting for the detailed comparisons. Also interested to know comparison of Davinci resolve on 16” Mac book pro vs M1 MacBook for 4K footage. I was planning to buy 16” but would like to consider M1 pro version as a alternate option for average 4K editing.
Hi Max! The biggest question is "8GB vs 16GB in FCPX for 4K editing". I've seen another UA-camr test 8GB M1 Mac with a 20 minute project in FCPX and he ran into "Application has ran out of memory" problem on an 8GB model which made me worried about getting an 8GB. But... it is $200 more which could be spent on a larger SSD. So, decisions decisions=) I am looking forward to more tests from you and hopefully that will help me choose the right config. Thanks for the content
Before 2015: Intel > AMD > Apple
Now in 2020: Apple > AMD > Intel.
This year is crazy!
Well, in pure performance AMD still trounces Apple. The M1 is good, but it's meant for power savings. When next year the M1X or M2 comes out, Apple might come on top of AMD, as Apple will add more high performance cores. Although in performance per Watt, AMD will still not come close to Apple -- M1 uses 15 W max and comes close to the best AMD at 30 W. All in all, goodbye Intel. It's really strange that AMD is used so little in computers.
@@genx-tv as far as laptop, I only get Intel because of eGPU support, there are no AMD laptop with thunderbolt 3! Maybe next year we'll see AMD laptops with USB 4 and eGPU from that port. But when I'll build a new PC tower, I'll get AMD for sure.
Am I the only one who never heard about AMD? 😂
Mmmm... surely you're not counting the 1990s and early 2000s. For content creation, it was UNIX and MacOS.

Nice haircut, nice sweater, insightful video, long live Apple, I’m ready for 16 inch MBP 🔥
I can only imagine what will happen when they redo the pro lineup.... I expect great things from Apple now. They're killing it with the M1 (which is a first generation entry level. It's just breaking my brain).
You know it hurts my brain is that people spent all this money on the Mac pro and then Apple knowingly was going to do this and it makes me think about two things. Are they going to come out with something for the pro line next or are they going to wait a while because it's going to take time and development? It's almost like why refresh the Mac pro and do all these things with it knowing you're going to have the m processors coming out soon. Are there m2 and m3 processors in the works I don't know but I'm assuming so. But how long is that going to take?
Thanks for your hard and fast work on this! I still haven’t seen a video covering performance in After Effects. Can you please address that??
Eagerly Waiting for your Macbook M1 16GB vs 8GB video.
Looking good, I just need the 16 inch as I don't have space right now to add an external monitor.
Thanks for tests. What about the challenge of working with projects that have 20 or more hours of footage and a long sequence and having a lut/grade and other filters on each clip?
Love your videos! I've been waiting for this one as I'm currently on the fence between this new MBP and a 16" MBP. Have you tried playing back raw footage at 120fps 1080p?
Thanks!
