@@kevin.callens I just hope that someday we can go back more towards the $499 price point at which the first Mac mini started. I know there is inflation, but even the base iPad has become cheaper over time, despite inflation. If the mini were $599 with the base model in 2022, I would be happier, and even more people would be able to buy one. But with the performance you get with the M1, I guess Apple needs to first introduce the M1X and M2, or else an even cheaper mini M1 would be too much value for the money, right? Can't have that! Haha! But I do think Apple really needs to flood the market with M processor Macs that have more value than Intel Macs could ever offer. Heck, HomePod mini starts at $99, so Apple could move slightly more towards value.
Thank you so much for this! Learned a lot. I am seeing a pattern. 1. M1s strength seems to be H265, as long as your editing an H265 footage at ANY resolution and exporting it at H265 it will beat everything. 2. The ram may improve the graphics performance too since its a UNIFIED MEMORY, with 16GB RAM, that might leave 10GB Memory for the GPU and it might help push these RAW formats forward.
Well, as an R5 owner I don’t think I really need to wait for 16” MBP. 8K playback is good enough for me as I will be shooting sparingly with that resolution. If it can handle the 4K120p 1800mbps HEVC from the R5 with correction and a LUT...that is amazing for the price.

Great video. What an amazing 1st gen Chip from Apple. Max, my 2019 MacPro with the 16 core, and the same video card as yours, plays the R5 10bit footage perfectly smoothly. Timeline skimming is also super smooth. No render, or transcoding needed. I can even add luts and color grade and no problem. Hi Max! The biggest question is "8GB vs 16GB in FCPX for 4K editing". I've seen another UA-camr test 8GB M1 Mac with a 20 minute project in FCPX and he ran into "Application has ran out of memory" problem on an 8GB model which made me worried about getting an 8GB. But... it is $200 more which could be spent on a larger SSD. So, decisions decisions=) I am looking forward to more tests from you and hopefully that will help me choose the right config. Thanks for the content
Thank you Max for this video! The real world usage you detailed throughout the video was awesome- I think for many of us Macbook Pro users the most demanding thing we do is video editing, and seeing it in such a visual way really took my breath away.... seen a lot of people's benchmarks and gone, cool, that's fast, but seeing you scrub over 4k video with LUTS with it being buttery smooth really blew me away
I can only imagine what will happen when they redo the pro lineup.... I expect great things from Apple now. They're killing it with the M1 (which is a first generation entry level. It's just breaking my brain).
You know it hurts my brain is that people spent all this money on the Mac pro and then Apple knowingly was going to do this and it makes me think about two things. Are they going to come out with something for the pro line next or are they going to wait a while because it's going to take time and development? It's almost like why refresh the Mac pro and do all these things with it knowing you're going to have the m processors coming out soon. Are there m2 and m3 processors in the works I don't know but I'm assuming so. But how long is that going to take?
I just got the M1 mac, they only had it in one city in my 200-mile radius. It is a fantastic device, the speed and the thermals alone makes it worth it. You can actually use this laptop, on your lap.
Typing this from the m1 pro. Haven't had a chance to really use it much but it feels like it's one of those obedient dogs that are calm as can be, but just waiting to be cut loose and do what it needs to. The battery estimate is insane...72% and still showing 20 hours left (I think it maxes out at showing 20 hours as estimate so its actually more than that) while watching UA-cam videos, downloading the whole GarageBand library of sounds, etc at the same time. And the body is cold as can be, no warmth at all.
I'd love to see a video on 8GB vs 16GB for non-Pro workflows. Things like many Safari tabs, a Zoom call going on, Spotify playing, maybe a few Google Docs tabs editing files, a powerpoint file or large textbook PDF file open. 9to5Mac had a good article on the 8GB of RAM models. Seems like even if it has to go into swap memory it's still pretty quick.
It would have been great to see the 8gb model compared to 16gb model. The GPU could have been capped by the memory swapping as all memory is shared between GPU and CPU.
Yup! The 16GB models shipped later than the 8GB but I'll definitely be testing that one since I think most people serious about video editing will spend the extra for the 16GB.
Max, fantastic video! Best Apple M1 review video on UA-cam. Thank you! You not only show where it excels (and surprises) but you also show its limitations and direct comparisons to Intel Macs to give a great reference. I really appreciate the work you put into these videos. It is very evident in the quality and depth of the info you provide and your passion for this stands head and shoulders above the rest. Again, thank you!
I like Linus but I think his confirmation bias has been on full display lately since Apple has released the M1 and IMO it’s turning viewers away. The dude complained the new Macs didn’t have touch screen 🤦♂️
@@Tackleqb tbh the Touch Bar is possibly the most stupid thing ever lol just make the screen touchscreen or not. It’s like they don’t want to admit that the MacBook is getting into iPad territory. Will probably eat into iPad sales
He was excited when AMD came out with the powerful chips, but when Apple did, he didn’t take time to appreciate the engineering. That’s what it did for me. Apple do things Apple way, Intel do Intel way, but advance in technology is undeniable.
Plus Linus regularly gets sponsored by Intel and regularly says how great AMD and Nvidia are, plus he has always been in the build your own PC camp, so someone like Linus may have bias because he is sponsored by the competition and he is not the type of person who would use these Macs.
This was so helpful! So even though the 2020 M1 13" MacBook Pro maxes out at 16GB RAM, it's still capable of processing high-res video better and faster than a fully stocked Mac Pro? The RAM has been my biggest concern with the MBP. How do you think the new MBP would do with 4K multi-cam shots for music videos?
No other channel does this comprehensive performance testing/comparisons. Every time apple releases hardware, I come to this channel to check how it performs.
Hi!! I am looking forward to buying an Apple Macbook Pro 13" but I am confused about what specs do I go for. I want to use it for some GPU based coding of data science and some 4K editing too... Professionally I am a teacher and do a bit of filmmaking for youtube videos as a hobby... I am from India and economically speaking if a buy a laptop now, I can upgrade it only after another 10 yrs maybe. So please suggest should I go for the M1 processor (16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) or the Intel i5 (16GB RAM, 512GB SSD)? Will 512GB SSD be sufficient or should I go for 1 TB? Looking forward to your guidance.
You are testing with 8K and 6K and saying this machine is great. And this makes me sooo Happy cause iam shooting at 1080p and the editing would be a heaven for me. Cant wait to get this on my hands❤❤❤
21:41 yes and no. Virtualization and emulation are not interchangeable words. Emulation is completely running the app on the ‘software’, while virtualization is translating the code for the chip to understand it better. So, while it ISN’t using the CPU to its full potential, it IS using those dedicated hardware blocks for video encoding/decoding.
that performance is sick. how hot does the m1 chip get during heavy workload though? would be a shame if after one year of editing raw footage the m1 notebooks would die of heatdamage o.0?
When testing Davinci - did you use 17.1? DaVinci Resolve 17.1 Beta 1 which adds universal app support for Macs running the new high performance Apple M1 processors to provide better performance on small form laptops. Also test Fusion stuff :)
@@gelobeast272 Not very rich, but you can buy a MBA on Black Friday, then sell it used. The lowest end model won't depreciate that much in value after taking into consideration the Black Friday savings. We don't know when the MBP 16 will launch. If it launches in February, then it's probably not worth it. If the MBP 16 launches in August I would be willing to spend a few hundred bucks to have a MBA in the mean time.
I’m trying to decide if the pro is worth the extra 300 bucks over the air. Could you do a comparison between them to help people decide? Especially for those who use it for occasional use + occasional photo and video editing.
Just imagine 16” MBP with Apple Silicon and Apple discrete graphic and iMac with desktop version Apple Silicon. Holy shit! I still can’t believe it’s happening.
Max, can you please tell me if you think the RAM upgrade is worth the cost and if it is worth the cost, in what types of scenarios it would be beneficial. Thanks.
So I LITERALLY just bought the 2020 27” iMac because I wasn’t sure how my workflow (mostly audio with AU plugins, and also FCP) would transition. Should I return this thing? It seems to work great, but I also don’t know HOW LONG until a new iMac/MBP 16” comes out. Also what do you guys think about retail value on new Intel macs?
Tough position, I have a the same one since a couple of months ago, 64GB and 5700XT GPU, the bad part is that you can’t get that amount of RAM yet. Nothing wrong with it, super happy, it flies, but for sure for tiny daily tasks that don’t require big amounts of RAM that M1 is smoking it. I don’t think I would trade the iMac honestly, not for several years... but you know what? The MBA M1 16GB would be a great companion co-desktop.
I’m in the exact same position as you and I just started the return process and ordered the 13” Pro. With a 14-day return period it gives you plenty of time to run tests for your own use cases to see which would perform better! I had an 8-core, 5700 XT + self-upgraded 64GB of RAM. From what I’m seeing here as a videographer who works with primarily 4K 10-bit 422, the 13” would be faster! Which is crazy to say
Hi max, I cannot find any info on this Bruce X app.. Do you have a link? Also, are there any other simple apps to check how my computer is handling? I notice my fans kick on when I'm booting up my machine and I'm not sure why or maybe if something is running in the background at startup triggering this. I have the latest MacBook Pro 16 maxed out.
Wow, it's out performing the Mac Pro. Apple really hit it out of the park with this one. Great video Max, I especially wanted to see how the MacBook performed with Premiere Pro so thank you.
Up til now I wouldn’t ever try to get a Mac for power. It was just too expensive. But once the apps convert to silicon, this MacBook finally seems like it has actual performance value. I will need 4 usb though.
Thank you Max! Looking forward to taking delivery of my M1 MBP next week. I'm currently using a 2015 13" base model MBP and I'm really impressed how it handles 4K A7III footage in FCP. 4K iPhone footage brings it to its knees though lol.
2015 13" iPhone 4k brings down to knees only due to missing CPU hardware codes of HEVC aka h.265. The same gonna happen with M1 when new codec will be introduced h.266
Please do a test for us photographers who aren't interested in Video-Lightroom Classic Speed vs the others..... No one has posted a dedicated stills photography test yet!!
Thanks so much for this Max! If you can, please make sure to include R3D Raw 6K or even 8K Footage in the big test! Would also be great to see how the mac mini holds up. For 700$ this might be the best bang for the buck editing machine ever.
I own a 15 Inch early 2013 Macbook Pro. Definitely thinking about upgrading it to a 13 Macbook Pro. Still not sure to stick with 8GB and get a 1 TB Hard drive or Upgrade to 16GB and stick with a 512 or both. Great video!
I think the problem with 8k footage is 8Gb unify memory. In this case, RAM is actually a memory of GPU. If you will compare 16GB RAM MacBook Pro, I think it can handle 8K as well.
A lot of people are talking about how much they’re looking forward to the higher end models with discrete graphics... but I wonder if that’s missing the point of Apple’s SoCs. The fact that the graphics are integrated into the same chip as the CPU, along with the RAM tied to both of them... that’s where these massive performance gains are coming from. The tight, physical integration and sharing of memory is what’s allowing them to smoke other systems.
I don't think that is what they mean.....What they mean is more powerful apple silicon chips......Like the Apple M2 for the Macbook Pro 16 being released next year (2021) with a 50-60W TDP compared to the 10-15W M1, that thing will be a beast.....Easily besting most high end gaming laptops with 230-330W Power bricks...while the Macbook Pro 16 will have a 96W Adapter.......apple always said their goal was desktop performance, with mobile soc power. Can't wait.
I’m sure a lot of people mean what you’re talking about, and I agree with that sentiment completely. But I’m seeing quite a few comments on these types of videos with people specifically mentioning discrete graphics. It’s those comments I’m referring to.
Yeah, I can see how Apple might forego discrete graphics in the thermally constrained devices, like laptops and iMacs. They can make whatever SoC they want for these, a unified chip with 8 graphic cores like they have now, but they can add cpu and graphics cores for the 16 inch MacBook Pros or iMacs. These machines might have 10 cpu cores and 12 gpu cores--whatever Apple wants they can do.

What is the app that shows CPU and GPU usage in the toolbar? Anyone knows?
You guys should try to use the MacBook Pro with M1 to render your next video, since it will be a even more realistic, longer test.
Thanks for your videos! Can you do a video with the new mac mini?
Any chance you will remake this video for a 14 inch 24 core M1 Max?
@@MaksimYuryev thanks for your great reviews! Waiting to see if the 16gb will do 6k Braw before I pull the trigger.
@@MaksimYuryev please test the performance of Fusion in DaVince resolve studio. your thoughts will be greatly appreciated.:-)
I think this is my favorite M1 review channel.
Macs are officially overpowered iPads (and in the BESTEST ways possible, not in ways that Linus means it lol)
You are goddamn right.
I will buy it for FHD video editing! it's beyond perfection for me.
No other channel does this comprehensive performance testing/comparisons. Every time apple releases hardware, I come to this channel to check how it performs.
Same here!
Bro is this the 256gb version of macbook air M1? Thank you
Yes
compare with iMac 2020 i7 32gb ram
Thanks for these videos Max! So time consuming but super worth it for all of us💪🏼
Max, thanks again! You are always so detail with the reviews.
that performance is sick. how hot does the m1 chip get during heavy workload though? would be a shame if after one year of editing raw footage the m1 notebooks would die of heatdamage o.0?
That’s the million dollar question with the air, the pro comes with a fan so there shouldn’t be an issue with it.
When testing Davinci - did you use 17.1? DaVinci Resolve 17.1 Beta 1 which adds universal app support for Macs running the new high performance Apple M1 processors to provide better performance on small form laptops. Also test Fusion stuff :)
How can you possibly enable cpu & gpu bar to see how much is in usage?
YASSS! The video I've been waiting for! Thanks Max!
Max and Vadim just like M1 processor, blazing fast with fresh and new content, keep it up!
Is the MacBook Pro m1 with 16gb ram and 512ssd is fine for video editing?
Why even testing any footage above 480p with 8gb ram?!
Where do that numbers come from ? can you show the screen time counter of that workloads in a video?
as I've commented before... everyone edits FCPX on an external ssd... maybe you should try that for a real world test.
Your channel is too underrated. You are a legend!
Should I just buy it this year or should I wait until the newer model release?
A really comprehensive video for editors thinking of buying this computer. Thank you.
Are you going to compare with the new iMac 2020?
Thanks max! Would love to hear your thoughts of this vs the current 16” MacBook Pro. Especially for fcp
Coming soon!
That’s what I’m waiting for. Seriously thinking of selling my 16” to get this (and before the 16” m1 comes and totally devalues my current one)
This is exactly what i want to see as well probably gonna hurt to see it though
I have a mini on order. Really looking forward to it. I have 2008 Mac Pro and 2013 15” Mac book pro. Both are way past their age and struggling.
I am very intrigued in the performance of these new M1 chipsets.... they are offering incredibly good speeds and power for the price.
Do you think it could edit Sony a7s III codecs smoothly?
100% what everyone needs right now! 👍
Might get the cheapest MBA until the 16 inch MBP releases.
so... mmm.. how rich are u?
@@gelobeast272 Not very rich, but you can buy a MBA on Black Friday, then sell it used. The lowest end model won't depreciate that much in value after taking into consideration the Black Friday savings.
We don't know when the MBP 16 will launch. If it launches in February, then it's probably not worth it. If the MBP 16 launches in August I would be willing to spend a few hundred bucks to have a MBA in the mean time.
@@OneCharmingQuark Oh yes BIG BRAIN
Same here.
Brilliant thinking!
macbook air M1 vs Macbook Pro M1, please. Still cant make decision about what to get. Thanks
Is the 8GB Ram version enough for a student with minor video editing, media consumption, coding, etc?
Absolutely, this guy is handling pro video with ease. You will be fine with 8GB
Did Canon update their software? How are you liking it?
M1 chip laptop Vs the same priced editing pc for premier and davinci......please
Max, can you please tell me if you think the RAM upgrade is worth the cost and if it is worth the cost, in what types of scenarios it would be beneficial. Thanks.
We will be testing this on Max Tech channel very soon!
thanks for this. What is the program you run allowing your to view the GPU, CPU and temperature in the display menu bar?
Return it. Do not settle right now, you might regret it later seeing these M1’s outperform the old ones. Better wait then regret
I’m in the same boat. Bought the MBP M1 16gb. I’m hoping the extra boost in ram will help me finally edit raw files in full quality
I would return it and get a Mac mini m1 16gb and buy a nice monitor probably save you a lot of money even still
I purchased the 13 inch pro 16 gb 1tb ssd can’t wait to edit on it
Hi max, I cannot find any info on this Bruce X app.. Do you have a link? Also, are there any other simple apps to check how my computer is handling? I notice my fans kick on when I'm booting up my machine and I'm not sure why or maybe if something is running in the background at startup triggering this. I have the latest MacBook Pro 16 maxed out.
With this performance, it's no surprising at all that these babies got sold out everywhere!
Many Thanks for this excellent video. You are getting always better and better !
Wow, it's out performing the Mac Pro. Apple really hit it out of the park with this one. Great video Max, I especially wanted to see how the MacBook performed with Premiere Pro so thank you.
Incredible....Buying one.
Its Been 6/7 Months since you've uploaded this video.. Has Adobe Premiere pro optimised for M1 or Whats the Status Now..??
Found out?
@@FrancoisDressler Nope..
@@ManojFT. Looks like its better: ua-cam.com/video/OTzRBNIhBXU/v-deo.html
Finally, a somewhat real world review! Earned my subscription!😉☺
Please do a test for us photographers who aren't interested in Video-Lightroom Classic Speed vs the others..... No one has posted a dedicated stills photography test yet!!
Please make video for online streaming with the M1 MacBook Pro. There are no videos on the topic.
Excellent video! Just what I was looking for!
Just wanted to thank you guys for your hard work on these informative videos!
We've been working our butts off. So tired lol.
@@MaksimYuryev you’re appreciated!
Please include this test in the future round-up video: Time it takes to transcode ProRes RAW into 12-bit ProRes 4444 XQ (for a Resolve user). Thanks!
I wonder how the 16gb model will fair up
I can edit my h.265 4k with a 2015 macbook pro because Its super simple to use a different codec. Its really not that complicated.
What is the graphics card in this machine?
I wonder if they will Make a Mac Pro with silicon ? As an add on... Try keeping the main power cables plugged in, not battery power.
I think the problem with 8k footage is 8Gb unify memory. In this case, RAM is actually a memory of GPU. If you will compare 16GB RAM MacBook Pro, I think it can handle 8K as well.
seen other videos plays 8k no problem
to do some fair test , we should test some effects and multilayer compositng
Can't wait.
@NintendoGuy67 lol. no its an iPad Pro chip, al least get the facts right
@NintendoGuy67 no you are just unoptimized delusional
