@Mario same with the track pad, soon as they have an Apple they already made up there mind without actually giving anything a chance. I have the white xps 13 2020 and the glass track pad is super smooth and all gestures work flawlessly but they'll never admit that.

Do not buy the Surface Laptop 3. I purchased the Surface Laptop 3 and found myself having to replace the computer three times before eventually returning the computer for a full refund. If you want a computer with a windows operating system, then go for the Dell XPS 13.

Showed the graph of the write speeds being faster in apple but not the read being faster on surface. 3. Said apple build quality is better but you didn't say how yet you said surface hinge is better. 4. The speaker and webcam were clearly better in the surface even if the sound was very close. 5. Made sure to say apple wins in the build quality, trackpad and battery but didn't say anything about surface being better in screen and keyboard. 6. Tried to play off the windows not having x50 times better performance / thermals because it crashed when you tried to run an app ok. 7. A macbook air cpu would not be able to handle games on an external GPU.
Mario they use the same chips the only different thing is operating systems the all use intel and when Apple releases arm chips they will be destroying Microsoft
the surface mic was louder, so we easily feel it's better, but it's not necessary true. For the speakers, the surface 3 might be clearer, but that's not a good thing. It can lead to sibilances, and be exhausting on long listening sessions. The macbook was way more balanced and transparent
@@santhoshkamal2895 You can remove the ssd quite easily in the SL3, plenty of videos on UA-cam doing so. Microsoft said you can, it would just void the warranty but anyone knows you can just put back the old one back before you go to the Microsoft Store. Can't do any upgrading at all on any Macbook due to things being soldered in. The only thing stopping you on the SL3 is 4 screws.
@@santhoshkamal2895 For the Surface Book 2 is is very hard to do (because you need to loosen up glue) but if you can get the display opened you can actually swap out the SSD as well. Very tough choice, finally a good laptop from Apple. As a developer that has been using the Surface Laptop line up for the past 3 years. I love it. Keyboard is fantastic for long typing, that aspect ratio 3:2 is crazy productive; you start cringing at other laptop aspect ratios when you switch to something else, and it's surprising how often you end up using a touch screen on a laptop from genuine natural user interaction. I think for most people to choice is going to be really between Mac OS and Windows. Overall great year hopefully next year both line ups can improve even further!!!
Surprisingly indeed, do you use the touchscreen in a "tablet-mode" or "laptop-mode"? I don't see my self using a touch screen on a laptop. I've been using a mouseless (ish) MacOS setup with Yabai window manager and skhd. I basically only use the touchpad to browse the web.
Peter Dang if you’re pegging the cpu to 100% for more than 20 seconds, perhaps you have the wrong device. The air is for 10 hrs of battery life coding, doing e-malls, writing, browsing

The point of the processor is to run as best as it can, and the point of the fans is to make that possible, if the fans can't provide that, then there is sth wrong with the fans (cooling design, maybe software who knows), it's not about the user using it wrong. Edit: Even if you don't put a fan in, you should properly design the cooling so that it doesn't throttle 2 seconds in the test.

@@MahamKhan-cu1eb Hey! check the new macbook air M chips, they are supposed to be very fast. Currently, I use both Surface laptop 3 14inch i5 and macbook pro 15inch i7. I always head back home to windows. It is just very customizable I feel and multiple ways to get to something. I do use the latest mac OS, but I could never find myself confident enough to make it as my primary machine.

It's also about OS preference too. As a professional software developer, I will never want a Windows machine. Either a mac or a linux machine(which will be a lot cheaper)
I like the Surface line, but I would have to say that the new M1 MacBook Air is a better value. You don’t get the touchscreen unfortunately, but the new M1 processor is game changing, in terms of power and efficiency.

That type of comment is more along the lines of a generalized PC vs Mac debate than a 2020 MacBook Air vs Windows Laptop 3 debate. Anyone considering buying both of these should already have a sense of which operating system is better for them. The job of the reviewer should be to consider which has the better hardware, and the consumer can decide which laptop is then better overall, given the OS.
That is completely asinine. An OS should absolutely be covered in a review and a review wouldn't be complete without looking at software running on both devices, which plays a very big role in the end to end user experience. Not everybody has time to research the ups and downs of each OS and therefore reviews like these exist and aim to inform the decision making process.

Besides, think about it logically. What you basically just said was, "since people don't have time to get informed about the differences between the OS's, they should spend time getting informed about the OS's in a review." If you compare computers with just hardware alone, MacBooks will always lose that comparison because will always have better specs at a lower price. Bringing up MacOS is necessary to give a reason why you should at least consider the Mac. People like me just prefer MacOS over Windows, therefore, it's an advantage for some; less so for others. The question is just how much you prioritize OS when it comes to your buying decision and just how much you like/dislike the OS's.

I really enjoy this style of review and the production value, but I'ma bit disappointed by how much your Mac preference colors your conclusion and recommendation. I understand you prefer Mac and that's fine, I use and enjoy both platforms, but if you're going to recommend the Mac over the PC in the end largely because it runs MacOS, then I don't see the point of comparing Macs to PCs this way at all.

Why would anyone want to play games on MBA. If you want to play, build a gaming PC. This is just a stupid argument. It is meant for surfing the web, studying, Netflix and overall productivity.
Both laptops are excellent choices. It’s really a matter of OS preference at this point. I’m glad that the Air is finally the “default option” for those who want a MacOS machine once again.
The MacBook Bias here is strong, sadly. And this is from someone who owns both a MacBook and a Windows PC. Try not to kiss up to Apple’s products so much. It would make for much better content for the consumers from all aspects of life.
I don't get it. It seems like everything on the SL3 was better then you picked the Mac. I have a 2015 MBP and a Matebook Pro X so i'm pretty unbiased. - I'm not sure how you determined the build quality was nicer... - Why is the 1 hand hinge test still a thing? - You're comparing 2 different processors. One for battery life, and one for performance. - One crashing testing app should not be a deal breaker for most users. It seems like in quarantine where people are trying to do video conferencing and remote work that the SL3 would be better for most.
There is however a problem with the surface laptop 3's screen, the screen crackes within weeks, just search it up on google: SL3 cracked screen and you'll be amazed by how many this happened. Happened to me too, I had the laptop for 2 days, barely using it, and the laptop just stayed on the table the whole time. I opened up my laptop and boom, crack from top to bottom. Before you buy this laptop, do your research about this problem because nobody is telling you this in all the reviews that say the laptop is "good quality and build very well"
Bruh, I could get a HP laptop with the same specs as the MacBook Air for like $800 aud, whereas the surface laptop is unique, there aren't many laptops out there that are better for that price. Pls don't be toxic in the replies, this is just my opinion.
Probably the surface, is not a secret that Mac OS manages better the Ram and I have yet not seen a MacBook laging, even with many programs and browser tabs open.
@@blinblinthing Chrome is a blackhole for RAM so I would assume at 8gb it'll bottleneck before the CPU throttling really becomes a huge issue. Besides I would say most mac users would be on safari anyway which uses significantly less ram. Safari on windows isn't very good though
I ordered a Surface Laptop 3 and awaiting it. I chose this over Dell Xps 13(2020) only because of the fan spinning and overheating issues. Yeah, no thunderbolt 3 but, I rarely doubt I would need external graphics at all.
I did a test that will be up on my channel and the write speeds are completely different using the same software. Doing a 4K Ultra HD test my Surface Laptop 3 gets well over 1k write and outperforms the Read speed than the Air.
Because unlike many PC laptops, Macs perform the same on battery or power. I did test the MacBook Air for this and there is no difference. Even the 16" MacBook Pro which uses MUCH more power under load (about 5x) performs the same on battery or plugged in.

I have a surface and by default, it overheats if you are doing cpu intensive tasks or trying to use the igpu for demanding tasks (gaming, 4K video editing, etc) but windows gives you full control over how much power you want your cpu to run at. Simply turning cpu power from 100% to 75% makes it run really good and I can’t really say the same about customizability with macOS. macOS can also do those things but it really drains battery (and I understand not everyone plays games but it is worth mentioning that macOS has terrible support for games) It really comes down to windows vs macOS and personal preference.
Great video and the comparisons were awesome. I’ve been an Apple use for over 10 years but recently bought the surface 3 since it was a steal at Best Buy. Got it for $700 for the base model. Honestly haven’t dealt with Windows for so long but they have come a long long way. Windows 10 is pretty awesome on this. And it’s a super quick laptop. It even handles Halo master Chief collection well. Can’t ask for more for the price.
this was a tough buy for me personally, but went with the MS. It has so many features that the Mac didnt have. For one the touch screen, which actually comes in very handy. The price was literally dollar to dollar when I looked at the 2. Both felt solid, and not cheap and flimsy. I like the soft tough alcaterra keyboard option on the MS as well. The main selling feature to me with Mac, was the resale of course, but ultimately when I compared the 2, I just couldnt beat the MS for options and usability that I personally like using like WIndows word etc. I feel like I cheated on my Iphone and iwatch etc but oh well. lol
Listen, guys... I've recently got a laptop with: cpu is ryzen 3500u (with vega 8 graphics) , 8gb of ram (can be upgraded), 256gb of nvme ssd (has additional space for sata ssd, and even dvd drive can be used for +1 more)... 15 inch, 1080p display. $350 us dollars. Tested, and it outperformed both of these in everything possible. Cpu speed, single core as well as multi, gpu destroyed them, read and writte speeds as well. My next move is adding 8gb of ram more and 1tb of sata ssd for secondary drive.
The surface webcam and mic is just better than the Air. It's not even a compaison. With the webcam, the Air's video is extremely grainy and terrible to look at. Whereas the one on the Surface is really good for a laptop, its clear with no graininess. It's also sharper. It is just better. The Air's mic is not bad, but the Surface is just louder and clearer.
Thank God I ended up buying a surface laptop 3, since the SL4 is out, I found it at a discount. Touch screen is fantastic, keyboard is awesome as well as the speakers underneath it and overall the experience is great.
I mean that, if Apple updates the 13“ Macbook Pro, it will get the same CPU the Surface has. The MBA just got an update but it uses an Y series CPU while the Surface (and the current available 13“ Macbook Pros) use the more powerful U series CPUs
I mean the only thing holding back apples devices is shit design. Could easily get great performance out of that Y series CPU without any beefy cooling solution.
@@BassoonJustin Performance is increased because of a better chip and not by improving the thermal systems. With good thermals the Y series chip can go 20% even faster and throttle less
Gowtham Gunasekaran but iPad Pro is using lcd too, heavy coating w/ lcd panel that supports pencil same w/ current galaxy tab and still windows surface laptop specifically (that some can transform into tab) can’t provide its user with good amount of coating...
I ordered yesterday the Surface 13.5 i7 and 16gb. I have been undecided also because the 2020 Air is pretty good in terms of price and specs, but also I was wondering if a proper Zenbook or a Lenovo S740 would have been good too. I am super thrilled to get my hands on it soon in this quarantine :)
Where I live i can get a much better speced out Zenbook for cheaper, but I’d rather have a surface laptop or a macbook just for the build quality and feel of the device. Makes a big difference for me.
@@Knarksafari well you are right - in Italy currently Lenovo ships from its store within almost 5 weeks of hypothetical delivery time if you want a configurable laptop. A lot of reviews could be misleading if they do not take account how availability and prices range within nations. I personally observed that the Italian market is saturated with given brands and sometimes it is frustrating
I've got both. Bottom line is these are very similar except for OS. OS may be the deciding factor for many. MacOS is still superior in ease of use and tight integration with programs/apps. Windows 10, however, continues to close the gap and is the more universal OS with many more programs. For me the things that are major pluses for the MacBook Air would be a better keyboard enough to feel close to perfect, the glass pad is far superior to the Surface TrackPad. I'd say the TrackPad is close to likely being the best Windows iteration of a "Apple-Ish" glass...but, it is not as easy to use as finger position is critical and the sensitivity is ridiculously too sensitive even at the least sensitive setting. I have learned to, mostly, work around this snafu. So I will say if having to have the Mac OS isn't a huge priority go with the Microsoft Surface 3. You will be in what is still the world's most ubiquitous PC operating system. You will have a few nice extras like touchscreen, fast face ID log-on, and a truly useful (for documents especially) new 3:2 aspect ration very sharp screen.
Good vid! I have the Surface Laptop 3.. upgraded from the surface laptop 1st gen, wouldn't mind trying something else but it's hard to go back to 16:9. As far as windows laptops I've had all sorts and the surface laptop is almost perfect... if it had a 360 degree hinge, thunderbolt 3 and maybe a little smaller bezel it would make it a 'realistic' perfect.
I really hope that the surface laptop 4 is getting a design refresh. I think it deserves it. I am considering waiting for the surface laptop 4, as i will need a new laptop for school, and my old one is rubbish. I will need to wait a few months, as school starts in September. Do you think it will be worth it?

I think i will go for the Macbook, since i have an iphone, and the only thing it lacks is performance. I think it's more than enough for student work. I might get a console with it tho, they are very affordable nowadays,because i haven't gamed on comp for years, and macs just arent for gaming. Other than performance i dont see why i shouldn't get the macbook.

Apple doesn't even hide it, they still advertise it as some like "amazing feature".
I always have my laptop camera covered so it doesn't really matter to me but the Microsoft camera quality is a lot better.

Keyboard is fantastic for long typing, that aspect ratio 3:2 is crazy productive; you start cringing at other laptop aspect ratios when you switch to something else, and it's surprising how often you end up using a touch screen on a laptop from genuine natural user interaction.
I think for most people to choice is going to be really between Mac OS and Windows. Overall great year hopefully next year both line ups can improve even further!!!

I don't see my self using a touch screen on a laptop. I've been using a mouseless (ish) MacOS setup with Yabai window manager and skhd. I basically only use the touchpad to browse the web.

@@chewbster Then why put the fans in? The point of the processor is to run as best as it can, and the point of the fans is to make that possible, if the fans can't provide that, then there is sth wrong with the fans (cooling design, maybe software who knows), it's not about the user using it wrong.
Edit: Even if you don't put a fan in, you should properly design the cooling so that it doesn't throttle 2 seconds in the test.
If all you are gonna do is write emails, browse the web, the Air seems perfect, but after all a phone can do that too (or iPad for bigger screen).

@@MahamKhan-cu1eb Hey! check the new macbook air M chips, they are supposed to be very fast. Currently, I use both Surface laptop 3 14inch i5 and macbook pro 15inch i7. I always head back home to windows. It is just very customizable I feel and multiple ways to get to something. I do use the latest mac OS, but I could never find myself confident enough to make it as my primary machine.

Honest critique: this shouldn't even be in the review. That type of comment is more along the lines of a generalized PC vs Mac debate than a 2020 MacBook Air vs Windows Laptop 3 debate. Anyone considering buying both of these should already have a sense of which operating system is better for them. The job of the reviewer should be to consider which has the better hardware, and the consumer can decide which laptop is then better overall, given the OS.

An OS should absolutely be covered in a review and a review wouldn't be complete without looking at software running on both devices, which plays a very big role in the end to end user experience. Not everybody has time to research the ups and downs of each OS and therefore reviews like these exist and aim to inform the decision making process.

If you compare computers with just hardware alone, MacBooks will always lose that comparison because will always have better specs at a lower price. Bringing up MacOS is necessary to give a reason why you should at least consider the Mac. People like me just prefer MacOS over Windows, therefore, it's an advantage for some; less so for others. The question is just how much you prioritize OS when it comes to your buying decision and just how much you like/dislike the OS's.

I really enjoy this style of review and the production value, but I'ma bit disappointed by how much your Mac preference colors your conclusion and recommendation. I understand you prefer Mac and that's fine, I use and enjoy both platforms, but if you're going to recommend the Mac over the PC in the end largely because it runs MacOS, then I don't see the point of comparing Macs to PCs this way at all.

There is however a problem with the surface laptop 3's screen, the screen crackes within weeks, just search it up on google: SL3 cracked screen and you'll be amazed by how many this happened. Happened to me too, I had the laptop for 2 days, barely using it, and the laptop just stayed on the table the whole time. I opened up my laptop and boom, crack from top to bottom. Before you buy this laptop, do your research about this problem because nobody is telling you this in all the reviews that say the laptop is "good quality and build very well"

Probably the surface, is not a secret that Mac OS manages better the Ram and I have yet not seen a MacBook laging, even with many programs and browser tabs open.

@@blinblinthing Chrome is a blackhole for RAM so I would assume at 8gb it'll bottleneck before the CPU throttling really becomes a huge issue. Besides I would say most mac users would be on safari anyway which uses significantly less ram. Safari on windows isn't very good though

I ordered a Surface Laptop 3 and awaiting it. I chose this over Dell Xps 13(2020) only because of the fan spinning and overheating issues. Yeah, no thunderbolt 3 but, I rarely doubt I would need external graphics at all.
100 C! That is destroying the chips, slowly but surely. My PC cuts out at 90 to protect the processor...
I did a test that will be up on my channel and the write speeds are completely different using the same software.
Doing a 4K Ultra HD test my Surface Laptop 3 gets well over 1k write and outperforms the Read speed than the Air.

Why even bother running benchmarks without having them connected to their charger.... No laptop will ever reach their desired performance on battery.

When you buy the laptop you’re probably going to use it unplugged to its charger for the most of the time, because it’s laptop, imho
Because unlike many PC laptops, Macs perform the same on battery or power. I did test the MacBook Air for this and there is no difference. Even the 16" MacBook Pro which uses MUCH more power under load (about 5x) performs the same on battery or plugged in.

I have a surface and by default, it overheats if you are doing cpu intensive tasks or trying to use the igpu for demanding tasks (gaming, 4K video editing, etc) but windows gives you full control over how much power you want your cpu to run at. Simply turning cpu power from 100% to 75% makes it run really good and I can’t really say the same about customizability with macOS. macOS can also do those things but it really drains battery (and I understand not everyone plays games but it is worth mentioning that macOS has terrible support for games) It really comes down to windows vs macOS and personal preference.
Great video and the comparisons were awesome. I’ve been an Apple use for over 10 years but recently bought the surface 3 since it was a steal at Best Buy. Got it for $700 for the base model. Honestly haven’t dealt with Windows for so long but they have come a long long way. Windows 10 is pretty awesome on this. And it’s a super quick laptop. It even handles Halo master Chief collection well. Can’t ask for more for the price.

this was a tough buy for me personally, but went with the MS. It has so many features that the Mac didnt have. For one the touch screen, which actually comes in very handy. The price was literally dollar to dollar when I looked at the 2. Both felt solid, and not cheap and flimsy. I like the soft tough alcaterra keyboard option on the MS as well. The main selling feature to me with Mac, was the resale of course, but ultimately when I compared the 2, I just couldnt beat the MS for options and usability that I personally like using like WIndows word etc. I feel like I cheated on my Iphone and iwatch etc but oh well. lol

cpu is ryzen 3500u (with vega 8 graphics) , 8gb of ram (can be upgraded), 256gb of nvme ssd (has additional space for sata ssd, and even dvd drive can be used for +1 more)...
15 inch, 1080p display.
$350 us dollars.
Tested, and it outperformed both of these in everything possible.
Cpu speed, single core as well as multi, gpu destroyed them, read and writte speeds as well.
My next move is adding 8gb of ram more and 1tb of sata ssd for secondary drive.
It probably weights a lot more than macbook air and surface laptop 3. Also doubt your ssd speed would be anywhere near macbook air.

The surface webcam and mic is just better than the Air. It's not even a compaison. With the webcam, the Air's video is extremely grainy and terrible to look at. Whereas the one on the Surface is really good for a laptop, its clear with no graininess. It's also sharper. It is just better. The Air's mic is not bad, but the Surface is just louder and clearer.

Thank God I ended up buying a surface laptop 3, since the SL4 is out, I found it at a discount. Touch screen is fantastic, keyboard is awesome as well as the speakers underneath it and overall the experience is great.

The Surface has a 3:2 aspect ratio, not a 3:4 (3m12s) and the the screen isn't just touch, it also supports Surface Pen with tilt.
I ordered yesterday the Surface 13.5 i7 and 16gb. I have been undecided also because the 2020 Air is pretty good in terms of price and specs, but also I was wondering if a proper Zenbook or a Lenovo S740 would have been good too. I am super thrilled to get my hands on it soon in this quarantine :)
Where I live i can get a much better speced out Zenbook for cheaper, but I’d rather have a surface laptop or a macbook just for the build quality and feel of the device. Makes a big difference for me.
@@Knarksafari well you are right - in Italy currently Lenovo ships from its store within almost 5 weeks of hypothetical delivery time if you want a configurable laptop. A lot of reviews could be misleading if they do not take account how availability and prices range within nations. I personally observed that the Italian market is saturated with given brands and sometimes it is frustrating
I've got both. Bottom line is these are very similar except for OS. OS may be the deciding factor for many. MacOS is still superior in ease of use and tight integration with programs/apps. Windows 10, however, continues to close the gap and is the more universal OS with many more programs. For me the things that are major pluses for the MacBook Air would be a better keyboard enough to feel close to perfect, the glass pad is far superior to the Surface TrackPad. I'd say the TrackPad is close to likely being the best Windows iteration of a "Apple-Ish" glass...but, it is not as easy to use as finger position is critical and the sensitivity is ridiculously too sensitive even at the least sensitive setting. I have learned to, mostly, work around this snafu. So I will say if having to have the Mac OS isn't a huge priority go with the Microsoft Surface 3. You will be in what is still the world's most ubiquitous PC operating system. You will have a few nice extras like touchscreen, fast face ID log-on, and a truly useful (for documents especially) new 3:2 aspect ration very sharp screen.

Good vid! I have the Surface Laptop 3.. upgraded from the surface laptop 1st gen, wouldn't mind trying something else but it's hard to go back to 16:9. As far as windows laptops I've had all sorts and the surface laptop is almost perfect... if it had a 360 degree hinge, thunderbolt 3 and maybe a little smaller bezel it would make it a 'realistic' perfect.

I think i will go for the Macbook, since i have an iphone, and the only thing it lacks is performance. I think it's more than enough for student work. I might get a console with it tho, they are very affordable nowadays,because i haven't gamed on comp for years, and macs just arent for gaming. Thank you for doing this, it's one of the best comparison reviews I've seen. I'm inclined to go with the surface for Windows Hello and touchscreen and taller aspect ratio but am reading about complaints of capacitor whine in quiet environments. Have you noticed any such whine?
