Finally a useful review about the new MacBook Air, instead of the standard reviews with a geek bench test and then bitching about how bad the machine is because the cpu temps measure 100deg
actually he could have done it with a real macbook air like a quad-core of any kind, i5 or i7. I think the base model is too little with its dual-core for a real 2020 review. I mean, come on, today nobody is really interested in purchasing a dual-core pc anymore. But that's just my 2 cents.
Matteo Castagnotto I’m glad he did the base model i3 bc he took the ‘crappiest’ of the line and pushed it intensely with the 4K. So if it worked out okay in the worst case scenario, you know it would work out for the quad i5
@@thisishersong How did it work out okay? It coudln't even playback the video
I've been occasionally editing (once or twice a week) on my 2011 macbook air until it recently died a week ago. I hope the new one can also give me the longevity my old MBA has. Who cares if it's throttling when it renders, go grab some food and Netflix.
I’m happy to see this refresh. For a while I thought Apple might have a receding airline. 😐
The Enthusiasm Project love the pun
I’m not going to laugh at that
As soon as he said 4K, I knew it was a wrap
I edit 4K video all the time as a film student on this MacBook and it works just fine.
Your test was the most useful I have seen and I have watched a few videos on this. Everybody else just say you cant do it or it is slow or it heats up. Show me the numbers! Heavy 4k 3:30 video at about 15 mins, I can comprehend that. I think it is perfectly fine for a non professional. Somebody not making money from this has plenty of time to wait 45 mins to render a 10 min video. But that is truly just somebody having fun with it because nobody truly doing serious work can afford a good 4k camera and not a computer to match it. And 4k from your phone is obviously not the same (would love to see you make a video using 4k phone video) and would render pretty easy compared to heavy 4k. Most people buying a 2020 Air probably only have 1080p video equipment anyway.
Last year’s Usd 1k laptop with dedicated gpu will smoke this shit, even at highest specs.
secretagentfbi which laptop from last year?
@@secretagentfbi what labtop
I'm watching this because I only intend to do 1080p. And I'll be using iMovie and Screenflow. I'm annoyed that everyone testing this affordable portable is using the $300 editing program and testing with 4k. Anyone doing only 1080p like me for a UA-cam channel isn't going to spend money even on Final Cut Pro.
Okay so at 10:20 about he said that 1080p should be fine, and frankly, watching this, I know that FCP is highly optimized but I feel confident that 1080p iMovie will be fine. I mean, I used to do that on a 2007 Mac Mini. Barely. It was like this.
My room is too cold even in summer, so I need laptop with built in oven

Bingo, see an upside! Lower heating costs.
I will say I upgraded to a MacBook Air (2020) to the i7, 16GB RAM and 2TB. I am producing music inside my DAW (Ableton) with 40 channels+ with multiple third party VSTs & Plugins. The machine works fine and the fan has yet to go off. This machine is solid!
UrbanLikwid omgggggg thank man this is what i was loooking for everywhere!!! I hope your not lying im going to get it now omggggg
This is exactly what I was looking for. I use ableton on windows and I was thinking of switching to a MacBook Air, was wondering how well it would run.
Yeah it is. I have the i5 model as i only needed a quad core and don't care about the max performance the i7 has (i only use it to code so i need multi-core/threading but not peak performance). And boy does it go very fast. The NVME SSD it has is seriously fast and i have yet to see even a stutter even with multiple Chrome tabs with Visual Studio Code open debugging something. Really it's an amazing machine :)
Never experience any overheated conditions till now? I’m really looking for MBA2020 for music and a little of video editing! Hope to get your response.
UrbanLikwid The 13” Pro would probably be better
“Dropping some frames” um that looks absolutely unworkable without proxy editing. I would definitely not consider that a workable computer for editing in the slightest
The new M1 version that launched yesterday looks much more promising. Can't wait to see how it works out. 😄
which spec mba is this? would an i5 with 16gb ram work? and yea if it can render or playback the video thats unusable.
@@Red-ju4mi he literally says the is the absolute base model like 10 times.
@@paperclihp3588 Thanks :D
I'm a selective listener, but even though it's a video format. It is pretty useful to write out good captions since its an educational video. I guess the amazon link would have told me.
BUT HE ALSO MENTIONED using a MBP 13" I imagine it was base model too.
917 second video, if each mention is 10 seconds at 10 mentions that is only 100/917 of the video!
because you don't know anything about editing.
My wife has the i7/16GB for the convenience of its size and weight. It handles 4K fine in Final Cut.
That's cool!
Why does she need editing? UA-cam channel? What
What are the temperatures?
I don’t understand why you would buy a i7 in a laptop without proper cooling. I would get the i5 with 16g ram instead. Your i7 won’t burst long enough for a noticeable difference as the heat will cause it to throttle
@@chuck7415 well its a mac, thermal throttling will probably be guaranteed lmao
The everyday boss, more like it. Big fan of the MacBook Air, never tried editing on it though? Looking forward to this video .
Thanks! I’m actually surprised at how well it worked out 👍
When he mentions rendering look at his face it's not exactly an endorsement of the I pad air is it it maybe you don't know anything about that but there you go I would rather use something a bit more powerful than the air even though it's a pretty good device
Typo
Been doing it on my 2011 macbook air with imovie, no 4k but it worked fine. Can't wait for my new one to come in.
Waiting for the 14" MacBook Pro review whenever that thing finally comes out
I’m very much ready for that, I would probably trade the MacBook Air in for that.
@@TheEverydayDad I've been using a spec'd out Surface Book 2 and it struggles HARD to edit 4k Sony files. Genuinely not excited about dongle life, but if it does the job.. it does the job. I wish Apple never got rid of the SD card slot and left at least one normal USB port in tact. But it is what is now
Nicholas Smith use proxies
I’m waiting on that for college man
Looks like we all have to wait a couple more months for the 14 inch MBP
I use a MacBook Air (2018) as my only drive. works perfectly for my for everything! from Ps to Ai to Premier, and couldn't be happier!
I’ve been using the 2015 MacBook Air since 2016 as my only, main computer so: yes, you totally can. But don’t expect to have a Pro buying the quad core option
thanks for the awesome review!! I'm very tempted to use this guy as my editing machine for my UA-cam channel!
man i like watching stuffs that i can’t afford
Just lovely how every reviewer just use their macbook to edit videos of them reviewing videos of macbooks
Just take the normal iPad and do the same and see what the performance is.
I use a iPad 6 with LumaFusion and it works very smooth even with H.265 videos from GoPro.
Hello, I just wanted to ask you a question. I'm giving my brother the 13" MacBook Pro from 2017, because I just can't stand the keyboard and I prefer a lighter computer, much interested in the new MacBook Air base model i3. However, on occasion, and not often, I do put videos up on UA-cam from iMovie. And also use apps like, 4k video download and DVD ripper...Am I going about doing the right thing by purchasing the new air? Especially since I seldom use those power boosting apps? I should also note, I always delete files and videos from my computer after I am down with them, or I put them on an external hard drive, so that should should help with keeping enough free space. I am about worried though when it comes to those power boosting apps...Will it significantly slow down, say when I share a file or convert some thing on iMovies or dvd ripper? Please let me know what you think. I really want that new air and not the new pro.
I never used iMovies so I don't know it. It is a more basic editing software and I assume any edits you do will also be that. In that case, you should be fine. Sharing a file doesn't take much resources. DVD ripper...well I haven't ripped a DVD in 20 years...back then it was a demanding job, but with machines which were many times slower than this Air, they could do it. I assume you shouldn't have any such issue either.
Downloading files won't be an issue either. Just make sure that the SSD it comes with is large enough for your requirements.
Is it able to ? Of course. Will it be a horrible experience? Of course.
Emmanuel Mota Lol
not at all
Nothing like those that speak before knowing. My i7 edits just as well as my iMac i7 from 5 years ago...half the price and twice as useful.
What pc/laptop do you recommend?
I've had this for a couple of days now and 'maxed' it out with loads of tabs and a couple of UA-cam videos: no overheating! It has a fanless processor and the fan inside the case is only for ventilation, not for CPU cooling (which would have been better). So far I'm loving the Air.
are you using i5 or i3 ?
I should have mentioned i3, that’s a crucial fact.
@@ZaffProductions thanks for the information
Really? Since I got it I had major heating issues, even by just having zoom/teams open with the camera turned on... I might need to reapply some thermal paste, I guess...
@@lopesmorrenofimI got the same problem, even with small editing tasks my i3 goes crazy with the overheating so im in the process of selling it rn
IF one has an Air already, you could edit basic 1080 stuff..... But don't go out and buy one to edit 4k for run and gun. Or buy refurb. It's painful. I'm still running a 2012 non-retina MBP 15" to edit solid 1080p on both FCPX and Premiere. That bad boy was/is a tank.

Him: “how does that look?”
Himself from the past: “lets find out”
I bought one and am very happy I did. It is a great photo and video editing on the go system for me.
When my iPad Pro 10.5” can do 4K 30fps without any slowdown or need to have a low render, Deftly wouldn’t use an air for 4K encoding .(Sony 100Mbit/sec)
I am exciting every day editing 4k with my 10.5 pro. And there are only 3 GB RAM! I love it
Good to hear that editing 4K videos is possible on a MacBook Air! Been looking for something I can use FCPX on for my job, and this might be it! Gotta get at least an i5 though, just to be on the safe side.
It can but if I were going to specifically edit 4K I would get the MacBook Pro. Even the base model 13 does a pretty good job with 4K.
@@TheEverydayDad Nice! I'll look into it!
👏👏👏👏Great review!!
I really enjoyed how you reviewed the capablities & limitations of this device in a way a non-computer person could understand.
I think I can finally decide what to buy since I now have a good understanding of the frustrations I might experience with the i3 model!
Anyway, I look forward to watching more of your videos!
Thanks for the insight on the MacBook Air! Good stuff. I understand it's not a device for professional use but I would like to use final cut pro occasionally to edit some family videos. I'm currently using iPad Air 2 and LumaFusion and it renders about 1:1 speed and has no issues scrubbing 2.7k videos. Would the Air perform similarly, better or worst?
I just rendered 15:42:11 video on the iPad Pro 2020 in less than 15 mins 😊👏🏼 I love it! Thank you for making this video you influenced my decision and I couldn’t be happier! Thanks so much!
To me, the MacBook Air is capable of music production and a bit of photo editing. I’m a media production student so the Air isn’t for me but I have a friend who studies Sound Production. He uses a 2018 Air with an i5 and he says it’s handled music production well. But an i3 can handle it also because I’ve been using a 2011 iMac with an i3 and 8GB of RAM.
Basically, buy the Air only if you are going to do basic stuff, light photo editing and/or music production. But get a Pro for intensive workloads.
Wow, thank you very much! I struggled between the Air and the pro for Fl Studio for example. So you think that the air is okay for that?
@@davidkekstroll5836 It no doubt will handle any music software as my friend uses Pro Tools. Personally, I would use GarageBand as it's free, or Logic if you're prepared to pay $200 for professional level music software.
@@adamburke4738 Allright, thank you very much!🙏
@@davidkekstroll5836 No worries. The i5 is also the better option but as I said in my original comment, the i3 can handle audio production no problem.
I am a film student. Was supplied this MacBook Air for my editing class. Edit 4K video every day with it just fine.
we might go with this instead of the pro, then. editing with 1080p shouldn't be a problem then, right?
I would think it would be pretty good I have a 2012 mid MacBook Pro with 16gb so if it were me I would go for the 16gb i5 cpu and I believe that would be pretty good
@@CollinPope thanks!
isn't the macbook supposed to be open while performing?? can someone explain that?
doesn't it get hot since it dissipates heat better when open?
Did you also try editing with it without screen recording? Do you think that might have been impacting some of the performance?
Great review. I don't make videos (just music in Logic), and I prefer the Air because it's comfortable to type on, and I like the design (and gold finish). But they're all great machines. Macs just go. They last. And they're solidly built. Keep up the good work!
Unfortunately I chickened out of ordering the Air, and bought a Pro instead. I'd souped up the spec of the new Air, and realised I was spending more on that than my new MBP, but I'm sure I would have been happy with it. I am very happy with the MBP, however!
Answer is yes but very slow. Any pc without a dedicated gpu is going to be slow as balls.
apparently amd's igpus are p good tho
Great video man! My GF just picked up one of these last week and i was super impressed. Might try to edit on it as well!
Nice! I hope they are enjoying it! 👍
How was it
the video I’ve been waiting for! this was the only question I wanted answered.
What about the i5 quad core processor MacBook air?
I haven’t seen anyone review the i7 version of this new MacBook. That’s too bad. I wonder how it compares.
I considered getting that one, but I think the regular is more likely for someone to be looking for it.
If you re interested in the i7 just buy a pro i5 in six months the prices will be close.
Great videos. I watched all your iPad Pro 2020 videos. I’m going to buy it for video editing on LumaFusion. Thank you
Nice! Hope you like it 👍
Awesome video! Do you recommend getting GH5? OR G9?
Does the fan run loud while you were doing these tests?
I use a baseline 2018 MacBook Air for editing 1080p videos (through external hard drive) for the family and I'm in pain like I came across this video hoping to get convinced to get a MacBook pro for the task. It is not the editing process, that one goes well, but rendering takes forever.
I bought the MacBook Pro as my last MacBook Air couldn't cope at all! I LOVE the Touch Bar and editing UA-cam videos is a dream now 🌼
Natan what was the reason for posting this comment
I’m looking at the MacBook Air M1. But I’m stuck. Which one would u recommend. I’m using it for basic stuff. But also wanna hook it up to my DJI drone and take videos from it and maybe do some light editing prob no editing at all just for fun for my son and I. Plus we love checking out the trail cams before hunting season. Trying to keep all the photos I take with my iPhone as well which would you recommend?
Just bought this Macbook Air and so far I love it, I don't edit photos or videos anyways but I just find it funny how nowadays people just seem to have no patience whatsoever with technology. My last laptop was a Macbook Pro 2012 and it is not upgraded (because I just don't know how to and would have to pay someone to do it for me anyways). I just got the battery replaced and the hard drive replaced about 3 and a half years ago, but apart from that everything else is from 2012. That laptop took more than 10 minutes to fully wake up and I had to wait about 3 minutes for apps to stop bouncing only for them to then say that is not responding so I needed to force quit and re-launch them again at least three times. So yeah in total for me to use my old laptop I had to think about turning it on like an hour in advanced cause overall it took one hour for it to run relatively smoothly. Still works, still runs well it was just a pain to wait so much for it to fully wake up and it did fail me quite a bit if I needed to video chat someone which meant that I always had to video chat through my phone which ironically runs faster than this old laptop. So for me this new macbook is fast as lightning lol.
oqeufh mine overheats
Love your casual, homey, informative videos :)
This and your video on the iPad Pro are very useful. Great work, sir.
It's very tempting at this price!
“Hey secondary camera” 😂 biggest flex
Great video! Do you know of a budget computer/laptop that would be great for editing? Currently editing footage off of my dell laptop from 2013 and its an absolute nightmare. It’s time for an upgrade!
What exactly is a nightmare about it? What are its specs? What software do you use? What videos do you use?
I watched some newer videos of yours and I liked everything about it, even when not always reached the same conclusions. Nothing wrong with that.
But watching you watching a playback of 1 frame per 3 seconds and call it fine. I mean, DUDE!!! DUUUDE!!!!
It would’ve been better if you did this with “better playback” or “better performance” depending on translation
Thanks I really appreciate your video , this was for me a selling point, I really like the MacBook Air , but everyone was saying to not waste my money in an air, I am planning to get the i5 thought, but it really shows how capable or incapable can this machine be, I was looking for a video like this to really get to the bottom of this purchasing decision, you have one new subscriber 👍🏼
Apparently the i5 overheats :( be careful!
Great video! I've been editing all my 1080p videos and then upscaling to 4k on my 2013 Macbook Pro.. takes about 3 hours to render 10 min video. I'm dying just waiting for the new 14" but I may just spring for the air.
Go for the 10th 13 inch pro rather than the Air! If you're willing to shell out for the rumoured 14 inch but can't wait for it to (maybe) get released, I wouldn't rely on the Air due to the overheating issues.
Mac book air just upgrade the processor to i5
elder the i5 apparently overheats, so the i3 is better if you can settle for it. I’ve seen a lot of reviews from those who opted for the i5 saying they wish they got the i3 due to overheating. I bought the 2020 air i3... comes in today. I’ll let you know how it goes! 😊
Are you actually upscaling them or just exporting them in 4K? I have my doubts it's a real upscaling as you can't really do that if all you have is digital 1080p videos.
@@LadyPeridot now hows your mac going on? Do you face thermal throttling while using it for online classes?
you’re brave to try an edit on an i3 (2 cores only). The test will be interesting with the i7 (4 cores).
Marc Blanchet you act like most people don’t make short 1080p videos
lil man how’re you able to tell how he’s acting through a screen?
I just bought it and I’m editing videos on it (base model i3) . Final Cut is smooth but the export times are not as good
I5 also hast 4 cores

iPad Pro 12.9 is my 95% work horse for video editing including 4k. looking for updated MacBook....but....this macbook you are using is the bottom line Mac air? the i3? what about the i5 or i7?
Can you explain what processor would be good for certain people? For the different Apple laptops and what you would upgrade when buying it! This would help so much!
Stuttering can be a sign of a lack of memory. Premiere Pro stutters like hell when I play back my H265 Phantom 4 Pro footage. Upon further investigation, my memory utilization was at 95%, almost 100%!
Time to upgrade to 32gb!
I edit for news and we don’t edit in 4K....we don’t broadcast in 4K....we edit in 720p!! I wonder if it work for regular news editing?? I edited on a MacBook Air 2015....it actually worked!! Just don’t try to make it do too much

i've been considering a new laptop, but I'm not sure if I want to invest in the apple echo system since I use premier for editing. looking forward to this one!
I’m all about the macOS. I love how quick and easy they are to use. It costs more but it’s been hugely worth the investment for me.
The Apple echo system is amazing. I use my new MacBook Air to edit videos and I love it.
Blue Eyed Tech do you edit in final cut? The footage is 1080p?
Nick Dubesa right now I have been using iMovie for basic editing. I haven’t downloaded final cut on this new MacBook yet but I will soon. I have exported in both 4K and 1080p at 60 fps.
Blue Eyed Tech your MacBook Air is an i3 or i5?
It would seem that you need some cushioning on your desk for your intro’s lately.....
Do you think there would be a massivve difference between the i3 and i5 in terms of rendering and video editing overall? I'm considering both options and i'm not sure if it's worth buying the i3, i5 or Macbook Pro (with 128 GB). Limited budged unfortunately. Any advice is welcome!
Do you think the i7 Chip would handle That better ?
Would this work for music production? I don’t use 4K, i only use 1080 quality for music editing?? And this is my cheapest choice on getting a MacBook
Is this good for Mac book 2011 and 2014 model?
Why wouldn't you try and see all this with the best version which is the i7 model and compare it to an older Macbook Pro?
Would the MacBook Air with i5 processor be better to edit 4K videos or do you think the base model MacBook Pro is a better option? I like the rose gold colour and price of the air better but am wondering if I should just bite the billet and get the pro
I say get the air and turn it into a pro. I5 bump up the ram
Thanks for your vid made my decision of buying it once available in my country
Ok I’m glad I found this video, last week I got the MacBook Air Intel Core i3 - 8GB Memory - 256GB. I’ve never had a Mac before and I thought that would good enough for editing in iMovie but I’m having those same issues of freezing playback. I’ve even had to shut down and restart over and over again. It’s super frustrating, I though macs were the best of the best. Is it because it’s i3, or the 8g memory maybe?
I’m going to contact them to see what options I have. Maybe return it or upgrade it if there’s any option to do so...
Following this thread cause I’m interested
We purchased one recently but upgraded the processor to quad core. For 100$ more definitely a better experience
Fernando Gandara is this something you can do after you purchase or only during purchasing?
Hey, it's Kimberlee! We did it while creating the order. I felt it would be better in the long run. I think you have 30 days for an exchange so definitely look into it! Especially if you want to edit some vids.
Did Apple support today, they had me restart, try safe mode, restart again...reset some Nvram settings but after about 20 mins or so it starts lagging again. I asked if it had to do with the processor and they still just gave me trouble shoot options and said if it persisted I may need it to be serviced. I might go that route just to have them give me a clear answer. I don’t mind an extra $100 if it’s stops it but if there’s another reason, I want them to figure it out.
Bro I'm editing on 13inch 2014 mpb and fcpx is working like a charm
