    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Steven (Matthew Broderick) asks the Cable Guy (Jim Carrey) for free cable.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Originally planned as a silly vehicle for Chris Farley, in the hands of director Ben Stiller and star Jim Carrey, The Cable Guy became an opportunity for Carrey to flex some of his darker comedic muscles as stalker Chip Douglas. Matthew Broderick plays Steven, an average Joe who is forlorn over his recent breakup with girlfriend Robin (Leslie Mann). When he moves into a new apartment, Steven comes in contact with Chip, who shows up to hook up the cable. Before he knows it, and whether he likes it or not, Steven has a new best-friend in the obnoxious and clingy Chip. However, Steven soon learns that obnoxious is a walk in the park compared to Chip's behavior when Steven tells him he doesn't want to be his pal anymore. What's worse, no one -- including Robin or his family -- believes Steven when he accuses the seemingly harmless Chip of being a malevolent menace. George Segal and Jack Black also star along with Stiller, who plays twins loosely-based on the Menendez brothers.

      This movie was about the effects of child abuse (Neglected children from a broken family unit) and how it affects interpersonal relationships, emotional trauma, and the lack of a social circle of friends when that kid gets older.

    You wonder how many takes this took! There's several seconds of silence from Carrey before he delivers his first lines. Whether you've seen The Cable Guy previously or not, you'd be crazy not to be laughing already at this point. The other dynamic of this work is you have both actors so diametrically opposite each other. Broderick is conservative straight guy, straight thinker. Carrey is some dark rubber thing we still can't figure out to this day. Genius!

    When I was a kid I was very excited for this movie, because I had loved both Ace Ventura films as well as Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I thought that this match-up of actors would be an epic comedy.
    As an adult though, I have a deep appreciation for this as an unheralded, underrated classic. But I can also understand how, as a 12 year old, this sort of humour didn't resonate. I just wasn't into dark humour at the time.

    Brilliant scene. The way Matthew Broderick postures with both of his hands on his lower back and his elbows flaring out as he waits for an answer from Jim Carey in regards to the illegal cable, shows that he's in a state of guilt and totally submissive to Jim's response. +bill bixby What are you talking about? Jim Carrey is still alive. Usually when someone says,"If something happens to someone, " it means they are saying if they die. For example, if I say,"If something happens to Michelle, her husband will have to raise 3 young children on his own. " They are saying if Michelle dies or is killed. To me, there is a difference between died and killed. If a jealous ex boyfriend shoots Michelle, and she is no longer living, she was KILLED. If she gets cancer, and she is no longer living, she DIED from it.

    0:30 He did not actually offer an amount of money, which - in a court of law - is not punishable, since an amount must be defined or offered in order to constitute a bribe. However, the fact the man trying to bribe the cable guy did say that it was stupid, meaning he self incriminated himself by admitting his guilt, and rationalizing it.

    • @kgunitkeese17
      @kgunitkeese17 Рік тому

      Sorry for being two years late, but even so, it was the implication that he would give the cable guy $50 if he would be willing to give him all the movie channels for free. So essentially, Steven was offering him a bribe, but it was a bribe of implication. The cable guy correctly inferred that Steven was offering him a bribe.
