I think that if Steven hadn't said that "You're gonna get some high marks" to Chip, Chip would've more likely just seen Steven as another customer and not as someone who he thought was offering friendship and therefore try to latch himself onto him like he did. In other words, without the "high marks" comment, Chip would've more likely have left Steven alone. But of course, if that had happened, there would be no movie

@sambraham4677 Jack Black's character was definitely more straight and less funny than many of his future characters were going to be, I guess at this point he hadn't quite found his style yet. Owen's character was really unlikable here, the way he talked to that waiter. If he'd done that in the movie "Waiting", they would've done some nasty things to his food.
Ben Stiller didn't have any speaking parts here, but was still scary looking in what he was shown as. Stiller actually had some nasty characters in his earlier movies, in his pre-Meet the Parents days. His role as nursing home staff in Happy Gilmore, he was a straight-up jerkass.
This movie is in my opinion Jim Carreys best. He is perfectly balanced here (for Jim Carrey). This movie gets even more funny when knowing Ben Stiller have directed it.
I loved this movie as a kid. The scene in the Medieval restaurant is the most I laughed at any movie. I was pretty shocked when I learned most people didn't like it and it kind of flopped.
@Hulli e Rest assured those ppl who didn’t like it probably have a poor sense of humour. The medieval, basketball and bathroom fight scenes plus many more. Such hilarious well acted and memorable scenes, Jim knocked it out of the park in this movie. One of my all time favs.

Did you notice here when Chip comes in they're walking through a hallway, then he turns right and steps into the living room, but in the scene when Steven and Robin are watching tv and Chip is already behind his door, he just looks in to see Robin, where's the hallway gone?
There was something very odd and lovable about TV in the 90's. There wasn't the same varied amount of entertainment, infotainment, or information as there is today. So we all were keyed into the same stuff.

Property is mostly just overpriced dirt, and treating it as a commodity for the highest bidders wastes trillions in unrealized real wealth by making it unaffordable for our youngest innovators, artists, and future business leaders to live in metropolitan areas where there energies could effect the most progress... all so some lazy private equity managers can make something for nothing and maintain an artificial scarcity.

I can just close my eyes and imagine "Adult" Simba & Horton the Elephant in place of those two characters. (since Broderick & Carrey voiced those two characters) Same thing with Alex, Po, & Lightning McQueen in Stiller's, Black's, & Wilson's place.
You really do need to be a certain type to enjoy this movie. Basically an IQ higher than room temp and an appreciation of *ALL THINGS EDGELORD.* The film is almost like one pessimistic glass half full journey into madness I rememebr everyone i knew hating it except my one bud. To this day the smartest, darkest and most biting comedy I have ever seen

Chip was raised in front of a TV all his life. when friends were out playing cowboys and indians Chip was inside and making friends with the TV. In front of the TV all the time and not making friends can sometimes a ware and tear into your life.
