all jokes aside "opening the taint" vs "knees out" literately saved my squat... just that little mental cue revolutionized my squat and fixed 90% of my problems... thank you ed... thank you..
I would love to see a breakdown of how that effects the anatomy, because it feels so different and so much better, and I have no idea why
Timestamp?
Same here, felt a massive difference in the bottom of my squat, as I was leaning forward slightly at the bottom
Jasper Velders can you explain to me how to open it up? Whats taint btw
@@jasonblahafitness1766 had to Google that one myself, it's basically the area from your balls to your a-hole. If you stand in your squat position and try to open that area, you'll feel your knees going out.
"Fuck you, Mark."
I fucking LOVE this channel.
Mark you are truly changing the game for a lot of people. Before your podcasts and videos I never knew who Stan Efferding, Eric Spoto, Dan Green, Ed Coan, and many others were. You're educating the masses on the greats of powerlifting that otherwise would be totally clueless. Thank you sir.
What a noob!
Zombie3110bd wtf are you?
You didn't know ed coan? Really.
Facts
@@dleigh9997 WTF was that all about? Another American wannabe.
Ed Coan is GOAT. Part how to squat, part history lesson in powerlifting and all parts awesome.
Mark, you Jacked Metrosexual, you're really stepping up the UA-cam videos, no one else is bringing content like this.
OmarIsuf Greatest calves of all time, also
I learned from the best Assmuff!
supertraining06 i like muff
OmarIsuf I keep thinking it was a mistake to capitalize every letter in my username... Just to make it clear, I'm not Ed Coan
@@GOAT-rl2uq I am the real GOAT
you know you're old af when you call mark bell a young whipper snapper lol
Damn, missed that. When did he do that :-)
i don't think you get it kid!
+sund5 very beginning xD
Part 1 - Getting under the Bar
4:35 Your stance is determined by what is comfortable for you. This is determined by invisible variables such as muscle, tendon, ligament and joint geometry.
Muscular Tension:
Push every lower spine muscle into the spine, and ever upper spine muscle into a locked tense position
Arch the MID back
2:14 The Importance of a Routine Preparatory Phase regardless of the Bar’s weight
Part 2 - The Walk out
(40%>
Take tiny steps, with a long pause in between steps to avoid the Vibrations.
Part 2 - Standing with the Bar on your Back
Part 3 - Going down
3:40 Do not push the Knees our, rather sit back by opening up the Groin
Part 4 - The Concentric Explosion
3:15 The Back must be pushed back up into the bar as you push with the Legs, causing the chest to move forward
8:55 This back motion is absolutely essential to the Concentric. Your back will round if its not done. It is also possible your back is too weak for the squat.
Dang brother thank you!
Thank you bro
God, what I would give for 10 minutes of Mr. Coan fixing my squat form....
Tea Why Jelly same!!!!! squat is by far my worst lift. I kill deadlifts but I have to use baby weight on my squats because my form is so bad right now. I can't wait to get back in the gym and implement some of these tips.
Go to a seminar. Very help he help me with my squat even though it's my best lift it's probably my worst form. I paid like $200 for all day seminar with him or something like that
creatine addict Lol is that legal in a meet. I have actually done this but I obsess over for to the point it drives me nuts. I definitely have a good morning squat for heavier reps.
Nothing
Yea it's legal in a meet.
Ed Coan plays around with 225 like he's teaching with a broomstick.
Easily one of the best/most informative videos on squat technique in existence. Thank you
Health4Thought And that's some health for thought
Leightron I see what you did there bud
Agree!!
Health4Thought .......YES, indeed
This is awesome. I’m a beginning 78 yr old power lifter and this makes so much sense to me.
They actually used to yell "taint!" when Eddy squatted at meets.
Hey Mark. I tore my meniscus 2 years ago, and only had surgery 4 months ago. I haven't been able to squat at all in the past 2 and a half years because of this; whenever I get anywhere near parallel it feels like someone is stabbing me in the knee. I just tried the cue in this video about opening up in the groin, opposed to pushing the knees out... I FELT NO PAIN AT ALL! This has quite literally been a life changer. Thank you for the great video!
I have bad knees the only way to get down for me is to open the groin. I'm super excited because I never thought I was going to squat again. I'm competing in Sept for my first time
You can’t find a 200$ an hour trainer that can do for you what Ed did in this free video
Man I second that especially when he said we could have learned from bodybuilder how to do dieting.
Awesome informative video even for non powerlifters, thanks!
That's awesome to hear
Gokuflex U are right bud. Forget the great squats tips, I like the taint and fart talking. haha. I love these guys.
Agree, squatting is squatting

I like Ed Coan, he is so down to earth.
Another spot on video. He's doing a seminar on this side of the states at Derek Poundstone's place and they're limiting it to only15 people per session as he wants it to be more hands on. Great job on this.
Brandon Campbell Definitely worth the money, I got to do a hands on seminar with him a while ago and it was great.
Brandon Campbell cool
Brandon Campbell I might be going on sunday, you planning on being there?
Brandon Campbell Wtf 15 people. SON OF A BITCH.
Przemyslaw Kowalczyk I went, there was only 8 people on sunday, it was a great time, got a ton of one on one time with the man himself.
"You bent over, and I could hear the ocean" I fucking love Ed Coan
David Martin lmao
this video is absolutely fantastic thank you for this amazing content Mark and Mike!
No problem it was a lot of fun
supertraining06 Are you guys going to do something similar on deadlifts in the future?
***** Is it the coaching videos? If not could you please link me the vid?

+xStandardTalent not really I actually have better form... pretty useless to stand like that these pussies would get raped if they played any sport.

One of the best videos on squats - thank you for putting this out!
So much respect for this man.
not everyday you see a guy having a conversation with 225 on his back
The information in this video is OUTSTANDING! Loves it!
Such a pleasure too watch Ed Coan teaching things.
Thank you for posting this. I love how Mark is an elite level powerlifter and he's still paying attention, asking questions, and absorbing information like a novice at his first seminar. Very cool.
Finally, thanks for sharing!!! Ed is the man.
Blessings

The guy's badass
Mark you do such a great job of getting information out of people. Thanks for everything over the years.
Outstanding video. Ed talking about how his relationships are worth more than his trophies was spot on. Awesome stuff.

Keep it up Smelly! This Channel is slowly becoming the go to channel for powerlifting tips!!
I love this man so much. So humble, such a guru, so knowledgeable. IMO, the true powerlifting legend.
Love these videos man. Makes me realize that sometimes i overthink my squat and begin to adjust to something that doesnt work with me when my form is just fine, but i did learn some key things that could help as there is always room to improve! Great vid
Thanks for the comment
sonic34314 True. Squat and deadlift are overcomplicated. Coan doesn't squat with textbook style. Do whatever you gotta do to squat and get back up without losing balance. You'll find out for yourself what the best bar position is, stance width, forward tilt etc. They all depend on one another and time will learn what works for you.
True but there is a certain point where everyone can do the same thing and benefit from it. Every one is either going high bar or low bar, that's it. So, I think we can take pieces of info from each squatter such as the squeezing all muscles as Coan was saying, it's important to do that when lifting anything over 315 IMO...
But yes we are all differet, yet, we can all learn from listening to squatting advice.

I'm learning so much from watching these type of videos. I'm seriously geeking out absorbing everything like a sponge. It's so cool to take these lessons and go apply them in my actual training. I'm getting more and more obsessed every day. Thank you so much.
This channel has singlehandedly taught me virtually everything I know and love about powerlifting. Thank you for every single video you make. It's incredible how high quality these videos and interviews are.
What a great video and such a nice freaking guy!!!!
Mark Macqueen Yeah man, can't be more humble!

I loved this video, and I really love that you have that quote from your brother on the wall next to the racks.
7:13 "a strong-ass muscle back there" hahah, good one
"I was gonna say with you bent over I can hear the ocean " 13:10 fucking funny
Man this made my morning, having this video to watch 2 hours before a squat session .. puurfect. Great content as usual, this is quickly becoming one of my favorite UA-cam channel.
Keep up these videos Mark! They're awesome and I would just like to thank you for just putting out these information videos. Must have been insane to get a chance to work with all these amazing lifters/trainers. Keep up the good work!

You getting the lilliebridges in for these kinds of videos any time soon?
I really love what you guys are doing here for the powerlifting community and I think it's really inspiring. The instructional videos show exactly what we want to know, they inspire, and the new gear is off the charts. Thank you guys for what you are doing and please keep it up!
I'm new to the sport, 8 weeks in. Thank you for posting this, found it very informative and can't wait to try this in my next workout.
It doesn't get much better than with Eddy Fucking Coan!
Ed Coan. The deadlift King and dad shoe connoisseur
lol the new balances and what not
Every time I looked at Mark's video, I always learned something useful. Great appreciation for brilliant content.
Dude the content of this channel is off the chain! Videos are getting better and better and I feel privileged to get advice from so many top level lifters
Cool video.
The greatest of all time in powerlifting and no doubt an athlete of the same caliber as Ali and Jordan. Yet so few know him compared to beluga whales like Phil Heath. A shame really. Great video on a positive note Mr. Coan seems like a really great guy always wanting to help.
Videos like these got me squatting. Most gym bros don't squat because it's hard. I started out with those gym bros. I stepped out on my own and it changed my life in the gym.
This is amazing. The squat has always been an intimidating lift because it's so complex, but this video really helped break things down for a knucklehead like me. Thanks guys.
haha 23:53
- it doesn't feel thousand pounds, it feels like 800.
- oh that's all?
Mike you funny
Any chance of getting a How to Deadlift?
GOAT ed why are you commenting on a video of yourself?

Great content man! Already watched the video twice. Great work .the whole crew.
Watched this video four or five times and always get a new takeaway each time, so much great info
1700th like! This was super helpful!
I loved it when Mike said “ we got light weight here” referring to 315 lbs. wtf?!
It's really light for them
Great video! I can't wait till my next squat session to try some of this. Thank you!
what a legend, best squat video on the you tubes. Thanks to Mark for getting it out there.
"All of a sudden, that weight feels so light because you're set up perfect, so it doesn't feel like 1000 pounds anymore it feels like 800..."
Sounds too easy to be true ;-) hehe
I feel like I should probably watch this once or twice a month, just for reminders of all the different cues.
Or maybe I just need a training partner shouting, "Open up your taint!"
Great vid. I can confirm the feedback ed gave about high bar and pause squats. I just started doing those a month ago and I feel stronger every week. It's always great watching Ed Coan videos. Thanks. :)
Ed is to the left but his voice is coming from the right,
Mark is to the right but his voice is coming from the left.

LMAO
My squat instantly became pain free and more stable after watching this Thank you so much for making these videos!
Watched the video yesterday, and went to the gym afterwards. The open your taint thing really helped fix some depth issues and knee pain I was occasionally having with squats. Thank you Ed Coan!
best part was the "skwaats" thing at 1:18
Keith Evans yeh, dat was funny
"I think that is a Metallica song" I laughed

This is the channel that taught me how to squat and deadlift! Thank you bigger stronger dude!
I've always been way critical of my squat and always looking for ways to improve. Even after consistently looking, watching and reading about squatting this video proves that there's always more to learn and to apply. Thanks for the vid.
"oh - my taint is like a conch shell, I get it now...I'm gonna squat 900!"
How to Deadlift, with Ed Coan ??? :)
It's great to see all these guys and their different views on lifting, keep it up
This has completely changed the way i squat and now is not only more power but the descent is like slow motion nice an controlled. Awesome video and amazing channel
