  • Ed Coan, the greatest powerlifter of all time, breaks down the squat step by step with Mark Bell and Silent Mike.
    Ed Covers:
-How to set up for the squat.
-How to choose your stance and bar placement.
-How to properly breathe and brace in the squat.
-How he walks the weight out in a squat.
-Using a belt and knee wraps in the squat.
-"Opening the taint" instead of pushing the knees out.
-Arching the mid and upper back rather than the lower back.
-Cues from the start of the squat, to the bottom, to the top again.
-His favorite assistance exercises for the squat.
    AND MUCH MORE!

all jokes aside "opening the taint" vs "knees out" literately saved my squat... just that little mental cue revolutionized my squat and fixed 90% of my problems... thank you ed... thank you..

@@jasonblahafitness1766 had to Google that one myself, it's basically the area from your balls to your a-hole. If you stand in your squat position and try to open that area, you'll feel your knees going out.

Mark you are truly changing the game for a lot of people. Before your podcasts and videos I never knew who Stan Efferding, Eric Spoto, Dan Green, Ed Coan, and many others were. You're educating the masses on the greats of powerlifting that otherwise would be totally clueless. Thank you sir.

Part 1 - Getting under the Bar
4:35 Your stance is determined by what is comfortable for you. This is determined by invisible variables such as muscle, tendon, ligament and joint geometry.
    Muscular Tension:
Push every lower spine muscle into the spine, and ever upper spine muscle into a locked tense position
    Arch the MID back
2:14 The Importance of a Routine Preparatory Phase regardless of the Bar’s weight
Part 2 - The Walk out
    (40%>
Take tiny steps, with a long pause in between steps to avoid the Vibrations.
Part 2 - Standing with the Bar on your Back
    Part 3 - Going down
3:40 Do not push the Knees our, rather sit back by opening up the Groin
Part 4 - The Concentric Explosion
3:15 The Back must be pushed back up into the bar as you push with the Legs, causing the chest to move forward
8:55 This back motion is absolutely essential to the Concentric. Your back will round if its not done. It is also possible your back is too weak for the squat.

Hey Mark. I tore my meniscus 2 years ago, and only had surgery 4 months ago. I haven't been able to squat at all in the past 2 and a half years because of this; whenever I get anywhere near parallel it feels like someone is stabbing me in the knee. I just tried the cue in this video about opening up in the groin, opposed to pushing the knees out... I FELT NO PAIN AT ALL! This has quite literally been a life changer. Thank you for the great video!

sonic34314 True. Squat and deadlift are overcomplicated. Coan doesn't squat with textbook style. Do whatever you gotta do to squat and get back up without losing balance. You'll find out for yourself what the best bar position is, stance width, forward tilt etc. They all depend on one another and time will learn what works for you.

    • @akw1312
      @akw1312 7 років тому

True but there is a certain point where everyone can do the same thing and benefit from it. Every one is either going high bar or low bar, that's it. So, I think we can take pieces of info from each squatter such as the squeezing all muscles as Coan was saying, it's important to do that when lifting anything over 315 IMO...
But yes we are all differet, yet, we can all learn from listening to squatting advice.

This is amazing. The squat has always been an intimidating lift because it's so complex, but this video really helped break things down for a knucklehead like me. Thanks guys.

"All of a sudden, that weight feels so light because you're set up perfect, so it doesn't feel like 1000 pounds anymore it feels like 800..."
Sounds too easy to be true ;-) hehe

I feel like I should probably watch this once or twice a month, just for reminders of all the different cues.
Or maybe I just need a training partner shouting, "Open up your taint!"

Great vid. I can confirm the feedback ed gave about high bar and pause squats. I just started doing those a month ago and I feel stronger every week. It's always great watching Ed Coan videos. Thanks. :)

Watched the video yesterday, and went to the gym afterwards. The open your taint thing really helped fix some depth issues and knee pain I was occasionally having with squats. Thank you Ed Coan!

I've always been way critical of my squat and always looking for ways to improve. Even after consistently looking, watching and reading about squatting this video proves that there's always more to learn and to apply. Thanks for the vid.
