    This guy has the best idea of the technique of the squat ive seen. All the other lifters who have been featured teaching the squat undoubtedly know how to squat but they arent as good at knowing how to explain it, and understand the biomechanics of it

      I see it as keeping hips under the bar, shortening the moment arm and making sure the quads are on rather than the back.

    Great video, I've watched about 4hrs on how to squat the last few weeks because I kept hurting my tricky knee but other times no pain from squats. I figured it was my technique and it was. Squating with no knee pain now, thanks Max and Mark, it all clicked together since I was doing exactly what Mark was.

      Wennings squat style fixed a bunch of my issues. Find what works for you and run with it.

    this vid has helped me tremendously. i was having horrible knee pain that was getting worse and worse. watching this has helped me correct my squat form more than anything else ive seen and ive watched it all. i thought i was gonna need knee surgery from how bad the pain was getting, but im on the road to recovery now.

    This shitty cue of sitting back comes from geared lifting and people really need to let go and realize this isn't optimal biomechanics for you
    Thank God I was able to learn how to squat properly from Max and JTS. I'm glad people are recognising this style to be superior

      the cool thing about the mid-foot cue is that it is biomechically more advantageous to raw lifters no matter how you slice it... pretty much on all lifts esp. oly
      like you said, people have to realize that using suits and belts in powerlifting will cause your movement patterns to change semi-significantly, and it's why the rise of cues like "get on your heels" came about as you pointed out

    thank's so much for this video!!! apparently i've been using 90% hips 10% quads when squatting, i instantly felt way more burn in my quads instead of my hips for the first time in 2 years.

      hey dick, i used the hip drive that mark rippetoe taught. i squat 315 for 4x reps at 160 lbs, but i never feel as though my quads are engaged. my hip however is always on fire!

    I think Max has totally fixed my squat.. Straight away I went down below parallel without but wink.
    I've been watching videos about sitting back and that just didn't work for me and I ended up rounding my back and good morning the bar up.

    Man, I've seen you on Alan's channel and with Meg but I didn't take the time to sit down with your content; I've robbed myself. going through your transformation and seeing you thrive has been inspiring. I don't dabble in the supplements anymore (I'm an Open Heart Nurse, so I just cant... lol) but you really know your stuff, and yet, you are so willing to learn. It's great!

    Been a fan of Max since his Olympic lifting days at Cal Strength. His knowledge and history in Weightlifting and more specifically as shown here, his expertise in the squat at it applies to either Olympic or powerlifting styles is IMO second to none. First I'd heard of a move to SoCal; oh well, northern California's (and my) loss. Thanks for the video!!

    Candito gives similar advice about actively pushing your knees forward as you come out of the hole to avoid having your hips shoot up. Mark deadlifts 705 but he's shaking when using this technique. Reveals the weaknesses in the core/quads that prevent a more upright squat.

    White belt mentality is probably the single best thing about this vid. Always beating myself up thinking I'm not up to scratch cause I keep noticing issues, weaknesses, realising an injury perhaps too late. Great to hear even those we look up to struggle, learn, fall down and get back up.

    When I transitioned to low bar a few months back I learned to sit back into the squat and I have exactly that good morning issue Max is talking about. When I was doing high bar I was breaking at the knees, but I got a lot of tendinitis because I have long legs...but I'll try breaking at the knees on low bar again and see how it feels for the next couple of weeks.

    This is how I started squatting. Going straight up and down, like a piston; breaking at the knees first and keeping them forward. Seems to work better this way. Just gonna take a while for my quads to build up, so I can do the same weight as when I was breaking at the hips first.

      Nick Zema Many do that. Their deadlifts usually suck. Look at Kendall and Uepa. Front squats above 380, deadlifts below 340. Williams and Lilliebridge never front squats: Deadlifts over 380 and squats over 400

    i think people in the powerlifting are underestimating the quads, most of them sit back and only utilising their hamstrings and glutes, remember quads are massive muscle groups...
