The part where the piano kid says "He's not cool enough to join the band" is actually true. When kids were auditioning for the role, that kid said exactly that, and that's why Jack hired him. 😭❤
Love Jack Black. He really hit the nail on the head with this movie. It is one of my all time favorites. It's too bad they can't teach like that today and touch kid's souls instead of making a quota. That is the only way to foster a love for learning.

The guy who played Freddie unfortunately passed away in a car accident I believe a few years back. He was so talented. All of the kids were unbelievably talented. Definitely recommend the 10 year anniversary reunion. They’re all great.

From what I recall Jack remained friends with all the kids after the movie ended, and would go to see Kevin Clark, Freddy, when the bands he was in would perform. Heartbreaking, he was tremendously talented.
This happened in my neighborhood in Chicago and many friends of mine knew him personally and performed with him. He is sorely missed.
Here's the thing: "Schools of Rock" have sprung up ALL OVER the country because of this movie. I can count two young cousins as graduates, and my district has a ROCK BAND program reaching from middle school to high school and this was the inspiration.
Fun Jack Black fact: Some people know that Jack Black's mother was an accomplished aerospace engineer working for NASA. But what some don't know is that on the day she went into labor and had her fourth child she was working on an advanced problem they were trying to solve at work. She took a print out of the problem with her to the hospital and at one point called her boss to give him the solution.
Then she gave birth to Jack Black.
So that's why he has so much rocket sauce. Got from his hard rockin' mama!

Great story. On top of all that, having met him at work a few times, I can honestly say Jack Black is one of the nicest, most humble people you could ever meet. Totally down to earth, unassuming and completely NOT the prototypical egotistical rock/movie star. In fact our boss thought he was a bum off the street until we told him how much money he makes per movie. He was obviously raised right and worth every dime he makes. So cool.

They did a 10 year anniversary live performance a few years ago, and they brought back all of the kid actors as grown adults to perform. Super heart-warming

Mike White, who plays Ned Schneebly, is one of the most acclaimed writers in Hollywood. He wrote this movie, White Lotus aaaaaand Rob Squad favorite, Nacho Libre.
He also was second place on the show survivor

Shit, I wish he'd written White Lotus to have a more compelling ending. Because it was damn good on the whole, but the ending left a bad taste in my mouth. It felt rushed and unsatisfying, like they needed to get around to the flash forward from episode one but didn't have a cogent idea of how to get there.

Jack Black fought really hard for the rights to use the Immigrant Song on that one scene. He really wanted it and got an entire crowd to say please let us use the song! and Led Zeppelin said ok sure. Truly epic!

I have a friend who is a high school English teacher in Kentucky. She uses comic books and graphic novels in her class to get the kids excited about English. Never be afraid to try and use a different medium like music and comics to reach the kids on their own level. This movie is a great example of that. So much fun!
When I was a kid I didn't like reading in school and pretty much hated school but reading comic books (funny ones) kept me reading on a regular basis and helped form my sense of humor and were even educational.

Some of the art was drawn in the styles consistent with the era the novels' stories were written or the era written about.
This has always been a creative method for students who have a hard time with reading and comprehension
I was a middle school substitute teacher in a Department of Defense Dependents Middle School in Darmstadt Germany. I did a long term stint as the 6th grade Science and Math teacher. I taught fractions using pizza and Hershey bars. I also had to teach the 6th graders Sex Ed. My son was in that class. We were both a little mortified. I did learn some slang I had never heard before though.
This is one of those movies that doesn't get old. We all either high key or low key wanted class to be like this. The end is heartwarming with Ned and Dewey both doing things they enjoy and the kids got to keep learning as well.
Jack Black is a national treasure. This movie is a Gem beyond words. It does everything you want an epic movie to do . Makes you laugh, cry, sing , and reflect . Its what Jack does best. REAL ART!!
this film has so many positive messages to inspire children ... as a rock fan myself it should be on every school curriculum !

I absolutely adore this movie. I haven’t watched it since Kevin Clark (the guy who played drummer Freddy) was tragically killed. It was so hard to watch him but also so amazing to see his brilliant acting and genuine talent. He’s so amazing and such an integral part of the movie. Thank you Freddy. May you rest in peace. 😔❤️🥁

I know, it's been a minute since I could bring myself to watch this again, but now it's magical to see him and his joy when he played the drums. Bittersweet but lovely.

As a teacher I love and identify so much with this movie to the point of tears. My life went on in an arch so similar to Jack Black's character (except for the illegal stuff of course) from my first experience as substitute teacher not really looking forward to the job until I had my first week and then something magical happened. Seeing the students react to my unconventional way of teaching and even struggling to be accepted by the other teachers until parents and principals saw results with their own eyes 😁. And today is my 17th year working as a teacher and I cannot imagine a better job in the world. Parents and teachers: acknowledge your kids personal feelings and interests and the rest will come along ❤️
Can you even imagine how much fun it was for these kids to be in this movie?! All of these awesome kids really did play the instuments. Very cool kids

I remember seeing this in theatres... when Jack Black nails the crowd jump at the end, it put the biggest damn smile on every single person in that theatre's face. Such a triumphant moment!
I think what the kids really responded to was that he was sharing his passion for rock music with them. It makes you feel special when a teacher wants you to love and appreciate something the way they do.
The school principal is Joan Cusack. You saw her in Sixteen Candles. She was the girl with the neck brace. Her brother John Cusack was also in Sixteen Candles. He was one of the geeks friends (Bryce)
She was great in Gross Pointe Blank.
She's also the voice of Jesse the cowgirl in toy story 2.

This is a movie that is just unbridled joy for me.
I watched in the cinema back in 2003, and I'm not ashamed to say that the performance of Zach's song at the end actually made me tear up a bit, from sheer happiness. Once in a while, even a jaded movie buff like me needs a sweet, wholesome, happy, fun time at the movies. 😁
Another favorite of mine, so good you're getting to it. At the height of Tenacious D, I would have never have thought that Jack Black would become a star for movies aimed at young audiences with films like Jumanji, Goosebumps, Nacho Libre. I think this is where that started.
Let's not forget his appearance on Yo Gaba Gaba.

Great movie! My son was the perfect age for this in 2003, later played in a rock and roll band in high school and still plays guitar. Then we were able to watch it with our grandkids (our older daughter's kids and her son also plays in a rock and roll band now) and they love it, too.
There is a real School of Rock, founded as a single school back in 1998 but now has 300 locations in 15 countries. I'm sure the movie went a long way in the expansion on the locations.
Aside from the fact that this is one of the best Music themed Movies ever created,
i bet these kids were having THE most fun and awesome time with Jack.

I absolutely adore this film. I’m a teacher too (primary/elementary school) and I wish I had the freedom and creativity to do what Dewey does with his kids - scrap the curriculum and just embrace who the kids are and encourage the best out of them in a project that engages their interests. I think my favourite part of the film, beyond the comedy, is the relationships Dewey builds with the kids. He knows who they are, what makes them ticks, how to encourage the best out of them. That’s how you know he’s a great teacher.
I remember seeing the theatrical release in middle school. Being a little metalhead myself, this movie was my lifeblood.
The performance that you asked about with Jimi Hendrix was from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. The whole festival was filmed and they made a movie about it. It's really good you guys should check it out! It's where Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Otis Redding got their first big exposure and then got record contracts shortly after.

About a year after this movie came out, I was hired as an Art teacher for an entire low-income school of 1st-5th graders. I had never taught before and got hired under an Emergency Certification, which allowed me to teach for one academic year. To say I was overwhelmed and way out of my depth, is a massive understatement. I had no idea what to do and wanted to quit. I talked to a good friend and I'll never forget his epic response to my situation..."I have three words for you...SCHOOL OF ROCK!" I watched the movie and it flipped a switch in my brain. I was able to make it through the entire school year and tried to make a positive difference in these kids lives, inspiring through creativity, which is unique to each individual, developing young mind.
I saw the live "Broadway" of this in London twice. It was so cool. The rock band played the musical numbers up in the corner, off stage, in the dark, throughout until the end when the kids did their concert. The band stood up and the spotlight shined on them to show that the kids were all playing their own instruments.
One of my best friends’ sons was one of the kids!

This movie is such a wholesome classic! I wanted to play guitar so bad when I saw it as a kid. And you guys being teachers made this reaction even better. As supportive as you were of Summer, your daughter is definitely going places in life. Fun fact: The guy playing Jack Black’s best friend also wrote the film and that show The White Lotus. And the kids are actually playing.
And Mike White was also a contestant on survivor David vs Goliath which is one of their best seasons. He was so entertaining to watch.
I saw this movie as a kid when it first came out, and I became ADDICTED; I've probably watched it at least 25 times. Jack Black is absolutely perfect for his role, and the whole movie is delightful.
It's always been one of my favorite movies ever as a kid. I couldn't believe that those kids were actually playing the instruments and it made me start guitar lessons! The lead singer from his 'ex-band' is Adam Pascal, he is an accomplished Broadway performer and was the original Roger in Rent the musical and movie!

This movie sparked an uprising in after school music programs and The School of Rock is a real program, many offer workshops lead by established musicians both famous and behind the scenes working musicians, writers producers mixers and so on, adore this movie 💜😎🦄
I love your comment regarding how those “off-script” conversations in the classroom are some of the most meaningful. Some of my most valued memories of my school days are exactly those times when the teacher put down the book, sat on the edge of the desk and listened. Not only paying attention to what we, the students, had to say as we voiced questions and concerns about school, recent events, and life in general, but offering advice and direction. Those were the lessons that I truly remember and am most appreciative for. 🙏 teachers!
I didn't know much about Jack Black, just that he was kind of wild and rocking (lol), but this film made me love him. His enthusiasm for rock music and rock history and just the way he energetically worked with each of those kids was SO MUCH FUN to watch. And it's a great reminder of how much music can shape a kid and inspire them. This film inspires me too. ❤

The lead singer at the beginning of the flick is actually Adam Pascal. He is a Broadway star, most famous for originating the part of rockstar Roger Davis in the musical _Rent_ where he started opposite then newcomers Anthony Rapp as Mark Cohen, Taye Diggs as Benjamin Coffin III, and Idina Menzel as Maureen Johnson.
In order for the movie to play the _Immigrant Song,_ Jack Black actually pleaded to Led Zeppelin and the band's producers on the "Battle of the Bands" set in front of the live audience, and it worked.
In 2015, _The Phantom of the Opera_ composer, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, turned the movie into a Broadway musical. With lyrics by Glenn Slater, the show premiered at the Winter Garden Theatre, and starred _Beetlejuice the Musical_ and _Hazbin Hotel_ star Alex Brightman as Jack Black's character. One major key for the show was in its child performers, who sang, danced, *AND PLAYED THEIR OWN INSTRUMENTS LIVE!!!* The show was nominated for 4 Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Book for Julian Fellowes, Best Original Score for Lloyd Webber and Glenn Slater, and Best Actor for Brightman. Sadly, the show didn't win any of these awards.

This is a great example of how learning takes time but all that knowledge enhances everything else you experience. The time that you guys have put in opening your minds up to these other genres and musical styles will do nothing but enhance your lives.
Also, the lead singer for the other band is played by Adam Pascal. He made two albums that are both very good but he also was one of the main characters in the musical Rent. The movie version of Rent would be a fun one for you guys to react to. It’s more of a rock musical.

I was really hoping you two would watch this one! I knew you both would absolutely love it! And I’m glad you both got most of the music references and recognized the various tunes (not everything but you got a lot of them!).
In that one scene at the teachers’ table where he quoted a song lyric that you didn’t quite recognize, the lyric was from “The Greatest Love of All,” written by Michael Masser & Linda Creed, originally recorded in 1977 by jazz artist George Benson but more famously known as a hit single in 1986 from Whitney Houston’s 1985 eponymous debut album. So you’ll want to add that tune to your list for the music channel now!

This was a great movie that I took my kids to see when it came out. As a parent though I would be upset that my kids weren't learning any core subjects.

I love this Movie and have since it came out. Being a Musician myself for the past 43 years(Guitar & Bass) I love that the kids were actually playing their instruments and singing. I love when young kids shine like thay all did. I really enjoyed their reunion show video's that are on UA-cam. Also think it's really cool that after this movie there really is School's of rock all over the country.
This is by far, Jack Blacks best movie. Such a fun, touching story, and I always liked movies where a mix of unlikely people combine to do something amazing. All the kids in this were fantastic!
It's a close call, but I personally prefer TENACIOUS D AND THE PICK OF DESTINY.

Thank you so much for being teachers! You are superheroes! Also thank you for enjoying the music and arts programs in school! They are important and shouldn’t be cut out of curriculum! For a lot of students this is a lifesaver and helps them be better academically.
This is rad. I just cried when you agreed about Roundabout. It so fun to watch you guys come along while I’m such a music nerd. Rock and roll is a true art form and its best artists are as important as Van Gohn and Beethoven and Hemingway.
Richard Linklater is such a good director. This is my favorite movie of his, but Dazed and Confused and Boyhood are two other great ones that I highly recommend.

This was such an important movie for me as a kid, i had the dvd and would replay it constantly, i wasnt even a rock fan at the time but i think i connected so much with the “be yourself and explore yourself” message that really led me to finding my love for art in general! Glad you reacted to this! When the credits were rolling i couldn’t but think this movie would be AMAZING with a full crowd on the big screen

The guy singing lead in the beginning is Adam Pascal. He was the original Roger in the famous Broadway rock opera "Rent" back in 1996. He later reprised his role as Roger in the 2005 rock musical "Rent", with her fellow original Broadway cast mates, Taye Diggs, Idina Menzel, Anthony Rapp, Jesse L Martin, & Wilson Jermaine Heredia, along with replacement actors Tracie Thoms & Rosario Dawson...

Rock opera? Where do you see the opera in Rent? Is a musical, one of the best by one of the best, RIP Jonathan Larson.
The guy that plays the roommate is Mike White who is mainly a writer/producer, he wrote this movie as well as current HBO hit The White Lotus. The kids that made up the band were mostly child music prodigies and non-actors.
He also co-wrote Nacho Libre and was on a season of Survivor.

The two best “teacher” movies (at least the two which inspired me as a teacher) which I HOPE YOU REACT TO are “Dead Poet’s Society” with Robin Williams and “Educating Rita” with Michael Caine. If you were higher ed like I was, I’d have recommended “The Wonder Boys” with Michael Douglas - merely for its realistic look at life inside the “publish or perish” world! The best and worst 25 years of my life. Instead, you opted for the most difficult area of education - K12! I don’t know how you do it every day. You are two brave and remarkable people to take on that task with that student body! Anyone who teaches in K12 is a god in my opinion! ❤

Yes! Dead Poets Society is a great movie. When this movie came out I was a student at a private school, in a different era than the school in the movie but many of the themes in the movie were still a little close to home.
I will double down on Dead Poet’s Society. One of my top 10 movies of all time. It reminded me so much of one of my high school teachers who I have to say was the biggest influence on me and my life. Mr. Schmoll was his name and that is why Dead Poets Society means so much.
Joan Cusack who plays the principal is in some other movies you'd enjoy: In & Out, Addams Family Values, and Working Girl. She also is the voice of Jessie in the Toy Story movies. Adam Pascal plays the lead singer in No Vacancy- he played Roger in Rent on Broadway and in the movie. Mike White who played the real Ned and wrote School of Rock just won a Golden Globe for creating The White Lotus.

Glad you guys loved this movie. Considering your music reaction channel and the fact you're teachers I kind of figured this would be right up your alley. I know I requested this already on your music reaction of the Beatles "Penny Lane" but you guys REALLY have to watch "Almost Famous" for this channel. Being it's a phenominal movie and it's so closely related to music, the music industry and fandom you guys would absolutely love it! Trust me, you'll thank me afterwards.

I saw this musical live when it came through Cleveland and all the kids played live. They were amazing. If I am not mistaken, there were some schools in the area who had some actual after school programs for School of Rock bands.

This movie actually launched real rock schools for kids. A great follow up to this movie would be Almost Famous about an up and coming rock band and a teenager who gets to tour with them.
All these kids were playing and very talented... they all got together 10 years later with Jack and did a reunion show ( which is on here btw) and they were just as good, just 10 years older
You may be interested to know that the cast got back together for a reunion to celebrate the movie. The jam session they did is on UA-cam. FYI I use the magic man line to comment on watching people's actions not words to find the truth.

@AllisonDAgostinoHopeFollows sorry this is a bit late, but in the movie, when the young girl comes up to sing her solo, Jack Black says to her, " do what magic man do not what magic man says." I use this in my life to point to official narratives where we are told to do one thing, but our betters do something else. I follow Jack Black's advice and do what magic man do instead.

The principle is Joan Cusack- her brother is one of my fave actors, and Grosse Point Blank is a movie with both of them that's not only fun and smart, but full of great music!
This is why your show is my favorite! I'm sixty, and I love everything under the sun, from classical to blues, to country, to pop, early rock. My Mother had hundreds of records that my sister and I would listen to all the time. We listened to everything 1950's on up. Now here's the kicker....it makes my heart run around in circles of joy when I see younger people giving the "oldies" a try and finding out for yourselves the depth of each kind of music, different styles and skills we can appreciate more fully by being open minded. I feel so happy every time you watch a movie I used to love, or listen to songs I still know all the words to. I hope I will be able to join your Patreon page soon. I'm on disability and get less than $900 a month to live on. Maybe in 2023. My hat is off to you. You earn every penny you make from this channel just by being yourself, and having fun while working! It's like a warm hug and I think it's important for kids that age to watch. Jay was absolutely right when he said that Dewey saved the kids from becoming robots. Even though Dewey wasn't a teacher he still reminds you of that one awesome teacher who inspired you in school. I went to a private school that was somewhat rigid like this and had an amazing music teacher that sparked my love of singing. RIP Mrs. Ifcic. 💖 Also--I didn't know you guys were teachers and just want to say thank you and keep up the good work 🥰
