Honestly, the scene with Haley Joel Osment and Toni Collette in the car is some of the finest acting I’ve ever seen.
Makes me teary every time.

Me too. I have to change the channel or walk out of the room for a few minutes otherwise I’m sobbing and done for for the rest of the night.

I lost my Mom 10 years ago tomorrow, I had talked to her the day before, and I was supposed to call her the next day but didn't, and I wish I had. Now I can't get those answers to all the questions I was gonna ask her.

He absolutely did. While we saw Malcolm whole, Cole always saw the dead in their 'injured' form. He would have seen Malcolm with the gunshot wound. Also remember the fear in this face the first time they met, and how avoidant he was. The two really needed each other. Malcolm actually did help Cole learn how to deal with all this, and of course Cole helped Malcolm come to the truth and to let go of his life and making his wife miserable.
There are several movies with surprise twists in them but I think this one is the best
Also the scene where they did the step towards the chair / step towards the door game. Cole didn't want to talk because his mother was in the next room.
i was skeptical but that makes sense. i had wondered, malcolm told cole they had an appointment that he'd missed and cole didnt question it even though malcolm would've been dead for a while and cole woulve known there wasnt an appointment
@@_Rook12 I think what leans me this way is the following;
1) Cole said the dead people don’t know they were dead.
2) The level of fear Cole has for Malcolm initially is the same level of fear he has for the others.
3) I can be wrong here, but I think we tend to see Malcolm/Cole time always through the eye of Malcolm, and dead people don’t know they’re dead.
4) when we actually see through Cole’s eyes he never sees the dead as anything but.
None of this is anything I’d slam down on the table and say it’s the smoking gun, but these 4 things are pretty much what I rest my assumptions on. I’d have to really go back and scour the film to make sure I am right on #3 so that is going to rest as an assumption and not a fact.
Finally, I get stuff wrong all the time, AND … I think film-makers can sometimes be deliberately vague. It supports their story, or they want us to explore different ideas, etc.
Regardless, this is such a heartwarming and wonderful film, and the twist really hit me hard. I did NOT see it coming!
The give away is the first scene it shows Bruce waiting for Healy and Healy starts running away to the church. He did that because he seen Bruce waiting for him and he was scared. That's how Bruce knew he was at the church. Another thing to look at is everything that is red is a clue. You really need to watch this movie at lest two times to catch everything.

How Toni Collette and Haley Joel Osment never won Academy Awards for those roles will baffle me til the end of time. A truly special piece of film making.
That was an incredibly tough year for Best Supporting Actor. Michael Caine "The Cider House Rules", Jude Law "The Talented Mr. Ripley", Michael Clarke Duncan "The Green Mile" & Tom Cruise "Magnolia" were all nominated along with Osment. You could have made a case for any of those performances.

How you two managed to not be spoiled on the biggest twist in movie history for all these years is amazing. What a gorgeous experience to see 2 people experience this for the first time.

Yeah, If someone's going to figure it out it's when Cole tells Malcom he see's dead people and they only see what they want to see and are unaware that they are dead. I'm watching and can barely wait until our reactors realize the truth.
They are too young to have had a good chance of being spoiled.
Oh yes, Cole knew. That's why he ran away from Malcom in the beginning, ran into the church where he felt protected. "You're nice, but you can't help me." He's used to scary ghosts, and he started talking to Malcom because he wasn't; he was kind and quiet, so Cole wasn't afraid of him.
Also in the scene in the living room when Cole comes home from school, when Malcolm speaks to him, Cole glances off to the kitchen because he knows his mother will hear him speaking to no one, so he doesn't say anything.
Exactly, when you watch it again you realize everything Cole's saying/doing in those first few encounters is not because Malcolm is a doctor, but because he's a ghost.
I think Cole was even under the false impression that Malcolm already knew he himself was a ghost. He thought Malcolm must be a different kind of ghost, a far more intelligent one in that respect. He knew in their final scene together that he wasn't gonna see Malcolm again coz he assumes helping Cole was Malcolm's aim in afterlife (as explained by Malcolm in the 'I see dead people' scene) along with being able to talk to his wife. He just casually tells him in the end to talk to his wife in her sleep coz probably he assumes that would also satisfy his other aim, since that's what he wanted to do the most after his death. At no point the question of Malcolm being a ghost comes up because to Cole it's very obvious. I think what Cole really wanted to say to Malcolm after Malcolm told him his story is that "I see OTHER dead people apart from you who UNLIKE YOU are not aware that they're dead".
@@anujpramanik1819 i'm not sure in the hospital cole didn't tell him. we are seeing things from malcolm's perspective and we know ghosts in denial can alter their perception of reality. maybe cole flat out told him but he wasn't ready yet
I love the line "they only see what they want to see," because it also refers to the audience watching the movie. We only see what we want to see, too, and miss the fact he's dead. :)

My initial thought was that we are all half-blinded dead men and women walking.
We use only 10 percent of our brain`s capacity. Partially because we don`t train our brains, partially because we know next to nothing about the capabilities of our brain, heart, gut, and soul, but also partially because the real science about our heart, mind, soul, and gut is reserved for the powerful who want to keep mankind in the dark about the actual powers within us.
Maybe the only "horror" film that spins and turns out to be the most beautiful romantic film ever that can move you to tears.

If you go back and re-watch it, you will see that Cole knew he was a ghost the whole time. You will also see how brilliantly they staged each scene so it seems that the doctor has interacted with others besides Cole but never once does anyone else actually see or acknowledge him. Just an amazing piece of film-making.
He was also wearing the same outfit the whole time
The first time I saw this movie in the theater. I felt something was off during the scene where Cole met Malcolm for the first time, and he was having the conversation with his mom about what they did for the day. I remember thinking "That's a pretty intimate conversation (between mother & son) to have especially with a stranger sitting in the living room. The writing and acting was superb. Too bad Shyamalan's movies got worse over the years.
his response in the beginning to malcolm following him around was to run to the church to get away from the ghost. it is obvious on rewatch cole was so scared that he could enter the church.
Only film I have gone straight back in to see for a second time. I HAD to re-watch it.
@John Paul Logan Cole also asks him, "Are you a good psychologist?" We think Cole is being snarky and asking if Malcom is good at being a psychologist, when really cole was worried he was about to get attacked and was actually wondering if Malcom was good in the sense of "not evil"
Saw this opening night in 99. The theater went absolutely apeshit during the ending. I am so happy for anyone who manages to watch this movie without having it spoiled for them first. One of the greatest films (and twists) of all time.
I remember watching it and when the boy said "I see dead people", I wondered if the Bruce Willis' character had died at the beginning. Just having the suspicion allowed me to see particular scenes and realize that I was correct. The Restaurant scene was an example; I could see that his wife did not see him even though it was supposed to look like she was mad at him and not speaking to him. So, the big reveal at the end did not surprise me but it was still fun seeing everyone else's reactions. Very good movie.

Dam I miss those times..when ppl be so hyped to see a new movie cause they were making gems then. Theaters would still get packed and movie stars were real stars not talentless hacks..wish those days would come back but seems technology ruined the human brain and function
I studied film and worked in Hollywood for many years so I know the business inside and out. When you work behind the scenes for a living, it's much harder to watch a movie without having that knowledge take you out of the viewing experience from time to time. IMHO, this film is one of the few films that I consider PERFECT. Everything about it is so well thought out and executed. The writing and directing are absolutely sublime and the acting is first rate. Like most, I was completely thrown at the end and it's been so fun watching reactors like Jay & Amber view it for the first time. It's the closest thing we'll get to experiencing _that moment_ again. Not only does it have one of the best endings/reversals of all time, but it's a whole twist on the thriller/horror genre itself because it's actually a very uplifting and life-affirming story. Kudos to people like "scarbrow" who suspected or figured it out early. I'm usually "that guy" too because of my background. In this case, I'm SO glad I didn't.
This one and Saw had the greatest twist ending.

I watched this movie in the theater when it first came out, and my mind was blown. I didn't have kids back then. Now as a father of a young boy the scene where he asks her to sleep in her bed because he's so scared hit me like a punch to the stomach... I need to go hug my son now...
Oh yeah, Cole knew from the beginning that he was dead. That was why he was so hesitant in the beginning. But because Willis' character was so gentle and not scary and wanted to help him, this helped Cole start to trust that not all ghosts are angry. They helped each other. Malcolm got resolution by helping a child like the one who had grown up and killed him. He was able to realize and say goodbye to his wife who he had been haunting since he had died. And Malcolm helped Cole help the ghosts by listening to them, and in turn, they went away. I loved your guys' reaction to that revelation that Malcolm was dead. It's so fun when people make it all the way to the end of the movie without figuring it out and getting that shocked reaction now that it all makes sense! Every odd thing in the movie suddenly was answered by this one realization.
After all these years I think I realize that Malcolm helped Cole as much by being a non-scary ghost as with his advice.
Another missed clue: after the “other guy” was given the gift/book, and Malcolm saw them nearly kiss, Malcolm told Cole that he just wants to talk to his wife like he used to. Cole’s response was HOW are you going to do that? Cole knew that he was dead and Malcolm’s wife would not be able to consciously hear him.
You took the words right out of my mouth! I had to rewatch it the first time I saw it as I so didn’t see that coming. Best movie ever!!
And Cole says we aren’t going too see each other again, After he told Malcolm how to talk to his wife. So Cole knew that when he told Malcolm how to speak to his wife Cole wouldn’t see Malcolm again because Malcolm got what he wanted
@@fatsam2564 And to build on that, it's book-ended with how Cole leaves him the first time: an almost resigned, grumbling statement of, "I'm gonna see you again, right?"
It's one of the many lines in this movie meant to play both ways: as a child annoyed by having to see a psychologist, and as a young seer annoyed at a recurrent haunting.
Just wanted to comment that the actress playing the mother, Toni Collette, is actually Australian and speaks with an Australian accent in real life. How insanely well did she do with that American accent! So impressive.
She is incredible....should have won an Oscar for Hereditary imo
The first movie I saw her in, if I'm not mistaken, was "Muriel's Wedding"... been a fan ever since. She can play it all, comedy, drama, you name it, she gives a great performance.

She was awesome in it, loved the ABBA 'Waterloo' scene with Juliette Lewis (another actress many probably don't realise is an Aussie as well) EDIT: I realise my mistake. It was Rachel Griffiths, not Juliette Lewis. I even remember all those years ago in a NZHerald film review of 'Muriel's Wedding', she was described as the Australian Juliette Lewis. Anyway, those were the 90s when the Australian film industry came out with some absolute gems: Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, The Castle, Strictly Ballroom, Shine, Babe ahhhh ... ❤

Cole absolutely knew he was dead. He would have seen the blood on his back and the bullet holes. Plus the fact that Malcolm never talked to his mother and only showed up in places where Cole was - no office for Cole to go to. He knew the first time they met, and he says "you're nice, but you can't help me." He says that because most of the ghosts aren't nice.
When he says “I’m gonna see you again aren’t I.” Is what stands out to me now that I know the twist

I haven't seen this movie in years but I think the first time Cole sees Malcolm was when he got home and saw Malcome with his Mother.
As soon as Cole walked into the apartment, he sees Malcolm sitting across from his Mom, Cole gave a little start, it's very subtle (I swear that kid's performance was brilliant).
On the first viewing, you think his reaction is 'oh no, mom called a doctor for me" but on the second watch you realize Coles's little reaction was because a dead person was sitting in the chair across from his Mom.

ya that very first scene when he sees him, he is scared and that is why he runs into a church... it takes a couple scenes for him to start realizing that he's not going to hurt him
The very first subtle hint is when Cole asks Malcolm: 'Are you a good doctor?' and Malcolm answers: 'I USED to be.'
My best friend and I went to see this in the theater. I was, of course, totally blown away by the plot twist. He turned to me and said,"You didn't see that coming?" He was the most amazing and smartest person I have ever known. RIP Geody, 2005!
Donnie Wahlburg was almost unrecognizable in this movie. Losing that much weight for such a short time on film, is a serious commitment.
I was going to say the same thing and was going through to see if anyone else mentioned it! When I first watched it with a friend (we were both clueless until the end as well!!) and were trying to figure out where he was in the movie. We then realized it was Vincent (the one that shot Malcolm) we were SHOCKED as he was so unrecognizable!
Wow, I never knew that was DW, I had to look up the story of him getting the role and even knowing looking back in the film I still can't believe it's him, crazy! 👍

The big, post-reveal mind blower for me is, he went across town to Kira's funeral BY HIMSELF. 😳
Some strange six-year-old kid you've never seen before shows up at your dead daughters funeral and starts looking around in her bedroom, happens all the time.
I remember thinking when I saw the film, why did they take a bus?

is not suspicious at all, and would go mostly unnoticed.
The best part of this is the rewatch factor. There are signs that something is off whenever Cole and Malcolm are in a scene together. And the hospital scene when Cole finally shares his secret, he’s staring directly at Malcolm noting that what he’s saying is pertains to him.
The car scene with Toni Collette instantly made me a fan of hers. That was excellent acting. All of her performances are like that. It feels real.
Imagine being in the theater when this movie first came out before anyone knew that Malcom had been dead the whole time. I'll never forget the gasps that went through the audience as the realization set in. It was brilliant.
Yep, it was awesome seeing it the first time and that moment in unforgettable as a veiwer.

I say it at the drive-in as a double feature. The second movie after Runaway Bride. We got there a bit late so had a wide view of the first movie. At intermission, some cars leave and others come in, so we repositioned to a better view of the second movie in the middle of the lot. Drive-in movies were awesome.
100% after the gasp people started cheering and clapping! this must be one of the best movie twists of all time!
When this movie was in the theaters, people who saw it would never tell you anything about it. It was always, “ Go see it. You’ll see.” Everybody hid the end, so you could experience it on your own. Oh, the good ole days. No cellphones, internet, or social media. Keeping a secret about a movies premise and end was a lot easier.
If you notice, Cole was scared of Bruce Willis' character initially. However, Bruce was behaving much more calmly/coherently than the other ghosts, so Cole began speaking with him, and got the help he needed. Then he realized Bruce was getting closure, hence the reason he said, "I won't be seeing you anymore, will I?" at the end.
So Bruce helped Cole work through things, and Cole helped Bruce by giving him an opportunity to feel he righted his wrong.
If you watch it again, knowing the ending, you'll see how Bruce never moves furniture and can't open the door. Those were clues we missed first viewing.

Cole also helped Malcolm by telling him how he could talk to his wife, allowing him to get closure there as well. From the beginning, Cole was passively helping Malcolm simply by being a kid who needed help and could potentially be saved, thereby giving him closure after the Donny Wahlberg situation. After Malcolm taught him to take control of his situation by helping the ghosts, though, Cole actively helped him by giving him the advice about talking to his wife. It's part of the arc that shows Cole goes from being a passive victim to a proactive agent in his life.
Cole immediately clocks Malcolm as a ghost when he sees him from across the street. He runs to the church in hopes of escaping him.
Also Shyamalan said that "anything in the real world that has been tainted by the other world" will appear as the color red in the movie.
Jay says "I don't do ghosts" - and I thought 'fasten your seatbelt, Jay!' The ending of this movie was such a mind-trip, and the cast/crew that knew the surprise were sworn to secrecy. The Box Office numbers soared, because many who saw it also kept the secret and actually went back and dragged their friends along to see their reaction (me included!). WELCOME TO THE CLUB!
Your reaction to the twist just took me back to my original reaction to it back in 1999. I really feel bad to anyone that was spoiled by the ending before they saw the movie.
50 first dates did it for me. But it didn’t matter because after I finally watched the movie years later it still terrified me.
Beautiful reaction. You two are so expressive. And yes, Cole knew Malcolm was a ghost, but he was the first ghost who had a healthy purpose who spoke to Cole as a healing spirit rather than a terrorizing phantom so Cole responded. It's especially apparent when Cole tells Malcolm after Malcolm tells,Cole he's going to turn him over to another doctor and says, "But you're the only one who can help me! I know you are!"
Coles Grandma visits him regularly before he even meets Malcolm. Therefore your statement is incorrect my friend.
Also the significance of Malcolm's jacket which would cover his wound makes him less scary than the other ghosts Cole sees. Another thing we don't notice - Malcolm is wearing the same clothes the whole movie

@@robertjewell9727 Just they Malcom is not the first friendly ghost. But he may be the first one that tried to help. The grandma might just be sad or something. Makes you wonder what her unfinished business was.

It's so amazing now that we're a generation past this twist now and people can go in completely blind again. It really was a masterpiece of a movie. The story was so engrossing that the clues simply didn't register.

Well, if you remember when this movie came out, everyone as very adamant about not spoiling the ending. I think it was because everyone wanted everyone else to get the same impact that they got. It was really amazing when you think about it. Not spoiling was actually more enjoyable than spoiling, and lots of people went with friends who hadn't seen it yet just to watch their friend watch the movie.
It's been a long time, but I seem to remember Shyamalan possibly asking people not to spoil it, and it was kind of taken up as a promise not to. Anyone else remember anything like that?

One of the greatest plot twists in cinema history. Btw, Toni Colette and Haley Joel Osment should've gotten major awards for their performances.
Cole definitely knew all along. One of the great things about this movie is how well it holds up to a 2nd, 3rd, 4th or more viewing. Understanding the twist ending only makes it even richer, including how Cole reacts to Bruce Willis' character right from the start. You will also catch so many other details, like the significance of the color red and so on. For me, this is an astounding child performance, perfectly directed. Your reactions were fantastic; you both have such big hearts. Amber, your first thought at the twist was about Cole helping him. I could have just hugged you.

Did he know? or did he come to realise? Remember he doesn't know how to deal with the other spirits. Had he known from the start he may have tried to help. I think it is more realisation.

When this movie was playing in theatres, there was a code of silence around the plot twist and it was a carefully guarded secret, so as not to spoil the surprise for others. Everyone knew the line "I see dead people"...but the truth about Bruce Willis's character was never shared beyond the theatre. The movie was so well written that the final plot twist is jaw-dropping! it was awesome to see your reaction, because we all experienced it exactly as you did!
I was in high school in '99. So many friends told me not to let anyone tell me about the movie, that I went in completely blind, not even knowing what it was about. So it was a double twist for me. Luckily I saw it with my dad, because I was grabbing his arm the whole time--the scariest movie I'd seen up to that point was Jurassic Park, which terrified me in theaters.
I keep that code of silence to this day. 👍
You are right, I’d forgotten that. Even here in New Zealand where back in the day there would be a delay of a couple of months before we got the summer block busters the same code of silence applied

You guys are quickly becoming my favorite reactors. Sixth Sense is a modern masterpiece in my opinion. Good old fashioned story telling couples with amazing plot twists. Acting was great especially from Haley Joel Osment. I do not think Cole Knew he was helping Malcolm. I think Malcolm was the first ghost who gave him a different perspective and showed him that he had a gift instead of a curse.

imo one of the scenes was included to indicate Cole realized he was helping Malcom (and that he also knew part of Malcolm's purpose was to help Cole).
The scene after the play when Cole has figured out his purpose, learned how to deal with both living and dead people, told Malcolm how to talk with his wife, and said he has a feeling they won't be seeing each other again... all these indicate he understands.
I went to watch this 5 times when it came out on the theaters just to see the oxygen being sucked out of the room at the end twist. Watching this in complete silence in a theater packed with people who forgot to breathe was one of the most amazing experiences I ever had watching a movie in a movie theater. People didn’t even talked as everybody was lost for words. And of course when I saw the end twist for the first time I was totally blown away too.
This is one of the most famous twists ever and I’m still amazed to see that there are people out there who dont know about it.
I also enjoyed watching people watch John Krasinski's The Silent Place. (The first one.) It was hilarious because the audience were so caught up in the film that everybody was more quiet than usual during it. There would be mass horror reactions in unison, in silence. It was hilarious.
The mom who was poisoning her daughter had Munchausen syndrome by proxy, they hurt people in their care to get attention for being caregivers. My great-aunt had it too, she made one of my cousins sick when he was growing up until they managed to get her away from him.
Also, the scene with Cole and his mom in the car broke me for the same reason that Jay brought up: there's family members I've lost that I want answers from, and one of the questions I have is if I make them proud or not.
I've never heard of that before. Obviously the Mom was crazy, and I was curious of the motive. I never knew there was a condition for such a thing. Sad.

Those who suffer from Munchausen's Syndrome make themselves sick, seem sick, injure themselves or make themselves seem injured in order to get attention or achieve some other goal. Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy is where they get the attention they want, or achieve some other goal, by proxy--that is--through doing those things to another person.
Ages since I've watched it fully but I thought she was Step Mum and trying to get rid of the children hence she's moved on to the younger one. I might be wrong. Talking of Munchausen though, the film about Gypsy Rose Blanchard is good and based on true story

I think Cole knew Malcolm was a ghost the whole time, but didn’t realize the ghosts were trying to ask for his help until Malcolm helped figure it out.

Haley Joel Osment received an Oscar nomination for his acting in this movie, being one the youngest actors in history to do so. The actress who played his mother also received a nomination. This and Unbreakable are by far my favorite Shyamalan films, both staring Bruce Willis who delivers some of the best acting of his career in them.
- Have you also seen the other two in the series? Split, and Glass(I believe in that order), both are excellent movies, all tied in together - if you haven't yet seen them, please do, they're worth your time. And if anyone out there can be a little more noticeable than a UA-cam comment like me, please do encourage these two excellent commentators to watch the trilogy. I don't do Twitch, Patreon or Discord so, can't ever really get the attention of UA-camrs very easily.

My wife and I saw this in the theater when it first came out. The buzz was amazing about the story and the child phenom actor Haley Joel Osmant who I believe was up for an Oscar along with the young 29 year old director M.Night Shyamalan. 👏 Everone in the theater was astounded by the conclusion of the film and amazed by the story and acting!!

The color red is placed in various scenes with Cole and Malcom. The red balloon, killer mother in red dress jacket, red door knob, etc. I'm thrilled that folks can still be surprised by that ending. You two were a joy to watch with!
Yeah, it's pretty obvious that Shymalan used red to signal danger. I think he does that in many of his movies.

The look on J's face when you figure out what was going on was PRICELESS. You can tell he was glad he sat through the movie to get to THAT point.

This is one of my favorite movies! I used to watch it with my daughter when she was still at home. Of course, she watched it with her eyes scrunched shut most of the time. She's 32 and we still watch it together from time to time. This is one of the best kept secret in terms of the ending. The Dr. at the hospital in the scene discussing Cole's scratches is M. Night Shyamalan, the director. He usually has a small role in all of his movies.
Cole knew that Malcolm was a ghost, but he wasn't one of the angry ghosts, so Cole was able to warm up to him and allow Malcolm to help him. Also, the coat and vest that Malcolm wore all the time covered his gunshot wound, so Cole wasn't constantly traumatized by seeing it.

That ending still gives me chills. I think Cole learned how he could help the spirits that appeared to him, which gave him a sense of control. He learned that from Malcolm. I think they were both supposed to encounter each other to help each other. I'm not sure if Cole realized he was helping the whole time. He just learned that he could help them with the little girl ghost. Now that I think about it though with their last interaction at the end, Cole realized that Malcolm was going to pass on to the next realm and was saying goodbye. That never occurred to me before. Such a deep movie on so many levels.

I think Cole realized that Malcolm's only remaining unfinished business was communicating with his wife, and once he gave him the key to that he knew Malcolm would be able to leave for good. Did you notice that the poisoned little girl's sister asked "Is Kyra coming back?" and Cole answered "Not any more." So was Kyra appearing to her sister as well?
I remember this movie very well. I went to see this movie with my cousin in the theater when it first came out. At the part where Haley had to pee and when the shadow went past the restroom, my cousin screamed so loud that she made everyone in the theater screamed as well. It was such a great moment thinking back on that day.

Cole absolutely knew the whole time. In addition to the things the other commenters have mentioned, Malcolm never changes clothes. Everything you see him wearing after he passes is actually a variation of what he wore the night he was shot: from the blue dress shirt to the brown suit to the pull-over sweater. When you re-watch the movie, all the little details really add up. Great reaction!
I loved your faces at the reveal moment - Amber you were classic wide-eyed, open-mouthed, pure shock and amazement! So fun to see both of you react to what we know is coming, and how immediately you processed it to re-remember all the clues. I agree,I've seen of lot of reactions to this amazing film but the Rob Squads reaction at the end is by far the best ever,absolutely no clue at all and I also love their responses to various scenes throughout the film too.

Cole knew !Malcom was a ghost. It was why he looked at him with such apprehension. But also curious since a Malcom was much more “kids gloves” compared to other ghosts
M. Night Shyamalan loves to hide things in plain sight in his movies. Rewatching this movie time and time again reveals new little gems each viewing.
For instance, most of the movie features dull, muted colors but each time a ghost is near you will see the color red, often bright
One of the greatest twist endings of all time. In retrospect, it seems almost obvious--all the clues were there, but we were so caught up in Cole's struggles and tribulations that we didn't see them. No one seemed to see the bombshell coming until he went back to his wife at the end. Outstanding acting and direction. Willis' finest performance IMO. An emotional powerhouse of a movie--almost guaranteed to draw out both jump scares and tears.
So well written, the film is so good without the twist that no-one sees it coming. Then even when you know you just want to watch again and see all the obvious clues that you missed - there are so many. You can spot something new everytime you watch it
Yep, as a viewer, we're like the dead people and see only what we want to see.
Cole knew. If you watch it again it's a lot of fun to see all the hints that are given. It becomes obvious, but in a way that is so brilliant because it's NOT obvious when you watch the first time. Really really good storytelling imo!! ❤️

The collective gasp from everyone at that end twist is one of the greatest things I’ve ever experienced.
The color red is the way that the director slyly communicated to the audience. The director had a small part in the movie, as the pediatrician, that questioned Cole's mom, also.

Probably one of your best reactions, it's so impressive for those of us who had seen this movie before to watch along with you, knowing the outcome. It's a testament to how well this movie was made, all the clues along the way yet slightly outside of your realisation, then that great reveal and all the pieces fall into place. Every time I watch this movie I am just so impressed with Haley Joel Osment.. at the age of 10 to be able to portray his character and put forward such an emotionally charged performance.. his "child" acting is in my opinion some of the most underrated.. just WOW 🤩
The guy that shot Bruce Willis is an almost unrecognizable Donnie Wahlberg. Mark's brother, former member of New Kids on the Block and the star of Saw 2.
Possibly one of the greatest reveals in the history of movies. Also one of the few movies where people went to great pains not to tell people the ending.. which I always appreciated because I was one of the last to see it back in the day.

I love how you both connected with the emotion of this movie, tbh. A lot of people only talk about the scares and stuff, but what truly makes The Sixth Sense stand out as a movie and what's made it withstand the test of time, is the emotional core: the relationship between the boy and his mother, the relationship between Bruce Willis and the boy, Bruce Willis and his wife.. how they're all just broken people trying to hang on to the remnants of their life and to each other. How at the end of the day, this is the story of a traumatized little kid that has to learn to face his demons and live with them in the healthiest way possible.. which tbh makes him not all that different from all of the other kids that suffer from mental illnesses like schizophrenia or anxiety.
Cole knew Bruce was a ghost the same way he recognized other ghosts, short of the death wound. He just appears to Cole no matter where he is. They never drove together to that little girls house, and the fact that Cole’s mother wasn’t paying a doctor, or setting appointments etc. had to have been obvious to Cole. 💕 this movie, and the two of You and these reactions. They needed and helped each other, whether either of them knew it at the time or not. Malcolm was the only therapist who could've helped Cole. Cole was the only person who could help Malcolm face the truth.
The quickness in the way you looked at each other when Malcom bloomed at his hand when the ring rolled across the floor. The realization that you had both just been duped. That was classic. It made the whole reaction worth watching again.

I always tell people, this is an incredible emotional family drama disguised as a horror movie.
Funnily enough even Toni Collette (actress who plays Cole's mother) has said that she was so moved by the emotional resonance of the story while filming, she did not even realize it was a horror film until after its release.

I dragged so many of my friends to see this. My bestie at the time was studying screenwriting and starting to write her own scripts. I told her, "This is the best movie script you will ever see." And she agreed. It is an absolute jewel - every facet so polished and precise. A gorgeous film, and an amazing cast. (M. Night said he was astounded by Haley Joel, who could do that "I see dead people" over and over and always get the emotion and the tears, and all of it.) Dam, what a film. It was extraordinary, too, how tightly that ending was protected. NO ONE wanted to give it away.
Unfortunately almost everyone figures out the end in the first third of the movie. Other than that this is a very good movie with great performances

@@Serai3 You should watch more reactions for this movie. Almost everyone figures it out at the anniversary dinner scene because there’s no second place setting at the table. A few people don’t figure it out until the car scene when the guy speeds away. This reaction is the very first time I’ve ever seen anybody figure it out at the end.
But I will say that maybe I exaggerated a little. But almost everyone does at least question whether or not he’s dead already very early in the movie whether they are certain of it or not.But it does not take away from the movie at all

Nobody saw the twist, but everyone who has seen the movie swears they knew all along. LOL. This is the movie that STILL keeps M. Knight Shyamalan working. He's been riding this movie's success for years. This movie was his peak. Everything after went downhill.

Loved this film from the first time I saw it in the theater. Such a great ending. Another great M Night Shyamalan film for you to check out is Signs starring Mel Gibson & Joaquin Phoenix. It's a Sci-fi mystery thriller. Besides writing, directing and producing the film, M Night Shyamalan also plays a part in it.

He was in this also -- he was the doctor that mom was talking to after the stuck-in-the-dumbwaiter scene.
I was going to suggest Signs as well. M. Night Shyamalan has some really great movies IMO. They’ve already watched Split, but The Happening is another good one from him.

Cole definitely knew the whole time. It explains why Cole was so scared of him in the beginning. I saw this move at a drive-in for the first time when I was 14 years old and that twist stayed with me the entire drive home. I kept replaying it over and over in my head and finding all the clues that I'd missed. It really was a great film. I'm so happy you reacted to it. Happy Halloween!
It also puts a little crease in the script with Cole thinking they all just want to hurt him. Cole would also know Malcom couldn't see the hanging people.

I always enjoy in this movie how Bruce Willis' character as well as Cole's mom are very kind and supportive to Cole. They never judge him they are just concerned for him even when he talks about seemingly outlandish things. I feel like it would be easy and cliché for them to scold him, but this subverts expectations better.
Of course, Cole knows that Malcon was a ghost, but it wasn't until the end that he was able to help Malcom because it was through Malcolm that he learned that he had to help ghosts.
He knows from the beginning that Malcom is a ghost because he sees how they died. So he sees his gunshot wound and blood all the time. Malcom doesn't see that because ghosts only see what they want to see.

Yep. Cole literally ran from him when he first saw dead Malcomb sitting on the bench outside his home. He ran straight to the church and set up his toy figure to protect him from Malcomb.
Malcomb's ability to talk to children from being a child psychologist was what broke down Cole's wall so he would speak with Malcomb.
You both get the Oscar for best reaction to this movie! I love that your hearts are so kind and you show such empathy for characters in the movies you react to. The moment you got the twist I could just see your minds going back over the movie and realizing the clues you were given. The best mind blowing movie of all time! Donnie Wahlberg (New Kids on the Block) played the guy in the bathroom who shot Malcolm then himself.
This twist is the stuff of legend, and seeing you both react to it for the first time was A+! This is such a roller coaster of a movie experience - so many emotions. Haley Joel Osment is brilliant, Toni Collette brings so much realism and heart as Cole's mother (that final scene in the car between them always makes me cry), and Bruce Willis really sells the audience on the assumption that he is alive throughout the film. So, so glad you both watched this!
It is a measure of how exceptional Toni Collette is that she almost steals the movie from Osment, who is brilliant. Willis deserves a huge amount of credit for his performance. It is so against type from his usual over the top screen personna.
Cole knew without a doubt. Remember it gets cold when the dead people come around. Cole always had a jacket or a blanket on when talking to Malcolm. This is also why he was so hesitant to talk with him at first. The writing in this movie is impeccable. The acting even better! And that curveball! I don't watch scary movies either, Jay. I think this movie is more of a thriller/suspense type. I've seen this movie so many times and I still cry. Great reaction guys.

I read somewhere that the director kept the full lines from each actor in the car scene at the end. The actress didn't know the answer "every day" and Haley Joel didn't know the question do their reactions were spontaneous. This whole movie is brilliant and this reaction was about as entertaining as the first time I saw it. Cathy and I love you guys.

That first jump scare for Jay. He was like "Amber you're on your own I'm saving myself" bahahahha. Best movie and the director M Night Shyamalan, who always does cameos (he was the doctor), has twists like this in every movie he makes. Love him.
Initially I think Cole realized that Malcolm wasn't scary like the other ghosts and being a psychiatrist, maybe he could help Cole. As their relationship grew, Cole probably thought about ways to help Malcolm improve his relationship with his wife. Glad no one spoiled this for you. I heard there was a loud gasp in the theatre when Malcolm realized he was dead. I was as shocked as you both were. Enjoyed your reaction. Great movie.
Definitely gasps. I went on opening weekend and the whole theater gasped and got kind of (annoyingly) noisy for a minute after the reveal.
He had to have known, especially when you see a bloodstain behind Malcolm's back. Plus Cole mentions "you're the only one that can help me, *I know it* " Must have meant something.
@@xMorbidArtx Cole definitely knew when Malcolm followed him to the church but I don't recall a scene when Cole could have seen Malcolm's wound. He had his jacket or coat on in every scene. I'm guessing Cole came to assume everyone who approaches him is dead. Sad.
He knew he was dead. That's why he was trying to avoid him at the beginning. He already knew that not all ghosts were scary because Grandma visited him sometimes. Once he realized Malcolm wasn't an angry ghost he relaxed. We saw Malcolm and his mother in the same room together and assumed they were talking about Cole. Once you realize Macolm is a ghost it's obvious Cole knew because he and his mother never mentioned Malcolm at all.

If you want an amazing movie that touches your heart, and tears at your soul. I'd recommend "Pay it Forward". Which also stars the young actor from thus, and Forrest Gump. "Haley Joel Osment". It's a movie that really makes you think about humanity.
Seeing Vincent in the opening scenes and trying to wrap my mind that he is Donnie Wahlburg really is getting into character for the movie. Love the movie . Donnie unrecognizable. A Brilliant movie
For several reasons, I definitely believe Cole knew from the beginning that Malcolm was a dead person, but I don't think he ever saw the blood on Malcolm's back. I can't recall a scene in the movie when Cole and Malcolm were together that Malcolm wasn't wearing a jacket, but I could be mistaken.
Although I have seen some great acting from child actors through the years, Haley Joel Osment's acting in this movie is far and away the best acting I have ever seen from a child in a movie. In my opinion, this movie is about as perfect as a movie could be. The storyline is brilliant, the writing is brilliant, the acting is brilliant, and it always kept me thinking, yet feeling that I must be missing something.
On another note...you guys are so easy to love! You're both compassionate, and intelligent. I have about 5 different people or groups that I watch on these reaction videos, and I have seen some absolutely wonderful people in the process. You two have beautiful souls. I wish I knew you personally because one of the beautiful things about life, is meeting wonderful people who are genuine to their core.

This movie is in my top 10 all time list. It is beautifully acted and so well written. If you go back everything is so obvious. And the fact that the writing is such that the vast majority of people did not see the twist coming even though it's right in front of their face. Brilliant
I can normally see where a movie is going a mile away. This movie caught me totally off guard. Brilliant writing and acting.
I love that this was a great movie even before the twist ending. But the ending took it up several notches. The part where he's in the car with his mom does get me every time. The mom (Toni Collette) was nominated for an Oscar for the role. She's Australian, but her American accent is so good, you'd never know it. She's also a really good singer!
The funny thing is that the director was actually surprised how many people were in shock by the ending because he thought he made it quite obvious, and if you see the movie again, it kinda is, specially in the bus with both Malcolm and Cole. I was shocked when I didn´t notice the first time LOL
The reason why I think Cole knew Malcom was a ghost the whole time was something he said. When they first met in the church Cole asked him, “Am I going to SEE YOU again?” That is what Cole said to Malcom when he told him his secret. I SEE dead people. That also why Cole said, “I’m not going to SEE YOU anymore am I.” in their last scene together.
One of the best parts when this came out was that no one spoiled it for others. They wanted their friends to have the same reaction. We knew there was a twist but never guessed the actual twist.

The scene where Cole gets locked in the little chamber gives me the biggest shivers and anxiety. His acting skills back then were of the charts!
