Ke Huy Quan ran into Harrison Ford backstage at the Oscars and Harrison pointed at him. Quan thought he was going to kick him out thinking he was just a fan but instead Harrison said "Short Round?". Quan said he became the little boy again when he replied "Yes, Indy!". It was the first time they had seen each other since this film came out. There's some sweet pictures online of them hugging.
It happened at a Disney fan convention, FYI.
I'm very happy these two have great respect for each other. I would have loved to been on set with Harrison Ford for all that time. Harrison Ford my favorite actor of all time. Will be a sad day when he passes

The grown up Short Round had a big role in Everthing Everywhere All At Once which won multiple oscars this year. One of the Oscars was presented by Harrison Ford so that Indiana & Short Round could be reunited.
they really should put him in the new indy movie coming out now. maybe a bit part like 'i have to visit an old friend who knows more about this map"
Now that you've been introduced to Short Round, you can appreciate his work as an adult in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Should def be next on your watchlist.

Kate Capshaw was a drama teacher in our local high school in Columbia, MO. She auditioned and got this job. She and Steven Spielberg fell in love during the filming. They came back for visits after they got married and their family grew.

As a teen, I saw this move THIRTEEN times at the theater when it came out. Tickets back then in Columbus, Ohio were about 3 dollars.
The 3rd movie with Sean Connery is one of the best! It’s funny, more light hearted and is a great father and son tale!

When I was 7 years old, I took my grandpa’s brown farming hat (he was a farmer) his whip, and my dad’s police belt to pretend to be Indy. I had many adventures playing on that farm. These movies were my childhood.
When I was in middle school, a friend of mine had a brown fedora and a whip and I had my grandpa's old leather jacket from WWII (he was a tail-gunner in the AF). We rented a camera and went into the overgrown barranca that ran along one edge of our neighborhood (and which had a rope swing at one point where you could swing across the gap to the other side). Once you climbed down into the barranca, you couldn't see houses or civilization anymore. It was just trees in every direction on either side of the gully and looked close enough to "South America, 1936" for our purposes, so we filmed our own shot-by-shot version of the opening scene of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (I even story-boarded it before we started so we had all the shots planned before we got there and could move as quickly as possible, hoping to maximize our limited time with the camera).
I played Indy (with drawn on facial stubble, of course, because middle school) and the guy who pulls the dart out of the tree and says, "Hovitos. Fresh. Three days. They're following us." My friend's little brother made a cameo as the guy who says, "If they were following us, we'd be dead already." My friend -- wearing his dad's beige bathrobe and one of his mom's weird fluffy, brimless hats -- played the native guide who gets scared by the carvings they uncover on the way to the temple (for which we used a styrofoam Santa Claus face decoration that we stuck to a wall and covered with foliage) and the guy who tries to shoot Indy but gets his hand whipped.
The whip stuff was interesting to film without actually hurting each other but we pulled it off with some sneaky quick cuts. And one of my favorite shots we got was me as Indy snapping the whip up into a tree then quickly cutting to me swinging across the barranca on the rope swing before jumping to another cut of me landing on the other side. That was one of the few areas where we strayed from the shot-by-shot formula... but it was super worth it. The shot's kinda goofy, tbh, but was def a crowd-pleaser amongst our friends and classmates. And, honestly, as a kid playing around with movie-making, I was pretty proud of the smooth timing on my edits -- editing accomplished using two VCRs hooked together, btw; not exactly ideal -- that made the swing feel fluid instead of like three separate shots.
Unfortunately, we ran out of time with the camera (and money to rent it again bc, y'all, video cameras were EXPENSIVE in the days before digital cameras and cellphones), so we had to stop before we got to all the big temple and idol stuff (which was a bummer too because we had this really funny little statue to use for the idol and never got to break it out). Still, great times! And we ended up using the footage in another video project we did years later in high school, in which our "Indiana Jones" character reaches the place where the idol is supposed to be and instead finds a harmonica. He shrugs and tosses it over his shoulder into the woods. Then we cut to a few hundred years later and a basic-cable TV show called "Archaeology Today!" in a which a panel of 8 scientists -- all played by the two of us in various costumes and makeup -- debate the origin of this weird "artifact" (the harmonica) that was discovered in (because it's the far future) the Amazon desert basin (one of our scientists even mocks the idea that there was ever water in the Amazon as "madness"). They each present (and argue over) theories of what this artifact might be, what it might've been used for, etc. One guy presents a theory (complete with artist renderings) that it's the fossilized skeleton of a tiny dinosaur he named "Hohnersaurus." Another guy thinks it was a calendar of some sort and they must've marked the passage of time by putting sticks in the holes to indicate the current day. We even cut to a correspondent "on location" at a dig in the Amazon (which was actually my friend's yard that was grass and foliage free at the time as it was in the midst of being re-landscaped) and he related his own theories about how the number of holes might be related to the number of fingers the tribe who created the artifact had and, therefore, it must be related to counting or have something to do with a basic economy (all while my friend's brother, in a cowboy hat, dug a hole in the dirt behind him). By the end, the least educated member of this panel of scientists and professors -- Dr. W. Axl Rose of Thomas Dewey High -- got bored listening to everybody argue and just started ignoring the debate, absent-mindedly fidgeting with the object, and eventually blowing into it randomly, accidentally discovering it's true nature.
Many years later, I became a Game Designer at Activision studios in Los Angeles. Two of the guys I worked with there -- Chris Strompolos and Eric Zala -- were two of the kids who famously filmed their own shot-by-shot remake of "Raiders" IN ITS ENTIRETY over 14 years (which is hilarious when you see them changing age and size from scene to scene), including setting Eric's mom's basement on fire to film the fight scene at Marion's bar and all of them working over a summer or two to buy a truck they could destroy for the chases with the Nazis and whatnot. You may have seen something about these guys -- there's a book and a documentary about them now, both called "Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made," and I believe the doc is streaming on Netflix (or it was at one point; I've never seen the doc so don't know if it's still there). Anyway, at the time we were all at Activision (roughly 1995-2000), we had occasional movie nights on the big screens in the meeting rooms after work and, one night, Chris -- who plays Indy in their adaptation -- brought in their version of the movie after having told us about it for months. And, man, what a fun night! It's insane what these guys pulled off. So far beyond what my friend and I were ever able to manage with our original remake project... and we were only shooting the intro!
At the time we saw Chris and Eric's remake that night, there was only one scene they hadn't been able to film: The airplane scene where Indy fights the big, bald German. In 2014, though, after a successful Kickstarter, they got the gang back together to film the airplane scene and finally finish the movie after 25 years. It's so weird now to see how much that project blew up for them -- they got to meet Spielberg, the "Napoleon Dynamite" dude made the documentary about them, they've toured all over the country in a branded bus, showing and speaking about the film, Eric tours schools giving inspirational speeches encouraging kids to chase their dreams and don't give up, etc. It's nuts seeing all that now and thinking back to watching the movie that night at Activision, back before all the hoopla, when it was just two of my co-workers showing a small group of us this crazy, funny, over-the-top project they did as kids and telling us all the insane stories about doing the stunts, setting the fires, creating the FX, etc.
Anyway, this comment was WAY longer than I intended it to be but I just wanted to share a few of my own experiences, like yours, that were inspired by or related to loving this movie as a kid. And, honestly, I just think it's awesome that a movie like "Raiders" can inspire so many kids -- of all artistic, economic, and determination levels -- to try on the fedora and play Indy for a while. Or, y'know, make an entire movie. That's love.

Watching Short Round (Ke Huy Quan) win an Oscar recently, and having Harrison Ford present it to him was everything! They hugged and it was so emotional! This is prob my favorite Indiana Jones movie for sure! Non stop action on a whole other level!
The kid who played Short Round just got back onto the movie scene and won an Academy Award! Quite the comeback story! He also played one of the Goonies, Data don't know if you remember him since you saw it way back last summer
I have been waiting for this one forever. The actor who plays Short Round and was a Goonie, won an Oscar this year after being out of acting for 30 years. Good feeling moment,there. This is a fantastic movie and I cant wait to see your reaction to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. And PLEASE, watch Rocky 3 as soon as possible, you'll love it
Ahh, I wanted to post something about Ke Huy Quan at Oscars and their reunion there. But didn't think about The Goonies (never saw it at the time or since). I didn't notice a moment of recognition during this reaction if they did.

I still cannot decide if I like Short Round or Data the most. Short Round was absolute clutch the entire movie, but Data was so versatile and inventive, they are both so amazing. And Ke plays them both so perfectly.
You guys totally missed that when Indy closes the door to the airplane after saying, "Nice try, Lao Che!" that in enormous letters on the door, it reads, "Lao Che." Then the music takes a dark turn to follow the audience's reaction that things are about to go wrong.
One of the greatest movies ever made. I watched this as a kid when it came out, and people went crazy for Indiana Jones. They even made a arcade video game of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Kali-ma...Kali-mah...KALI-MAH!!! ❤️ 😂
I don’t know if it is still because she is sick, but to see Amber tear up when she learns the kids have been taken or when the kids are being whipped always gets me. Any movie where there is something with kids she is always so emotional and it is so endearing. The best Indy movie is yet to come. Last Crusade is by far my favourite

This one was so campy. Not a great movie. The special effects were not that special especially how late it was.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the third movies in the series, is my personal favorite! Harrison Ford and Sean Connery play so well off each other!

I rank "Raiders ..." and "... Crusade" as co-equal best of the series, and as 2 of my all-time favorite 25 or 30 movies. This one has lots of action, but only a few tattered moments of story, and zip for character development. As for believability, no. It's all a load of BS. "Big Trouble in Little China" or "The Golden Child" have better and more believable stories. So do "Kung Fu Panda" and "Shrek", now that I think about it.
@@RealTechZen Believability? You mean like ghosts coming out of an Ark, to shoot flames of fire through Nazi heads? Or perhaps meeting a 200 year old Knight that's been kicking around since the middle ages, while on a quest to find a Holy Grail?
People who say Crusade is really good are nuts or it's just because that was the one they saw in theaters. Temple of Doom is a masterpiece. One of the best sequels ever made. Crusade is Ok only. It's just a mediocre retread of Raiders. Nothing daring about it or memorable. Temple of Doom is brave, creative and contains one classic action scene after another. What classic action scenes are in Crusade?...crickets.
I'm glad you guys ended up appreciating this so much. Ironically, one of the most criticized elements of Doom (at least when it was released)--how intense and horrific the setting is--is also one of its greatest assets. It ends up feeling super intense, like they plopped Indy into a horror movie. It almost feels like a genre mashup.

I'm a massive horror fan, and that's probably a big reason why this is my fav Indy and one of my favorite movies of all time
I think in the making of etc ... they talk about having accidentally made something that would be R-rated. I'm pretty sure this film is by and large the cause for PG-13 being invented. all of that was talked about in the making of and bonus features of the trilogy.
Finally!!! People that LIKE Willie! I've always enjoyed her character! The comedy from her "fish out of water" storyline was fun! Not everyone is a Marion. Willie was definitely an "indoor girl" and she still had character growth and punched out a Thuggee too! Yeah she screamed a lot, but so what... I loved Indy's reactions to her. Great stuff!
I never knew people got so annoyed by her. I've always loved her character. I find her hilarious.
I wouldn't go that far, but I do think that she gets maligned unfairly. Jones literally holds her at knife point when they meet, and she unexpectedly goes from dancer at a fancy nightclub to fighting for her life against a death cult of child slavers who try to sacrifice her by burning her alive in a very short amount of time. There's no reason in the world to expect her to be prepared to handle this.
Me too, she's hilarious! I love the trio of Indy, Short Round and Willie, they were all so great together.

The whole point about Willie is that she's supposed to be an example of what would happen when an untrained, everyday civilian ends up accompanying Indy on his travels - that is to say, it would go pretty poorly. She was written as a kind of subversion of the recurring trope of the 'strong action damsel' that was popular at the time: she doesn't want to be there, she doesn't have great chemistry with the hero, she's not on board with his plans and really, the most redeeming thing about her is the fact that she's pretty.
Short Round, whose real name is Ke Huy Quan, was also in The Goonies and a few other films before his career pretty much dried up w only a few film roles. Few child acting careers continue into adulthood, even fewer if you are an Asian actor. Out of coincidence, a talent agent thought he would be good for a role in Everything Everywhere All at Once and he got the role. The movie ended up turning his whole life around. He won a Golden Globe and an Academy Award fo best Supporting Actor in that movie. His acceptance speech brought tears to the eyes of many. Even the presenter choked up reading his name. He is a Vietnamese refugee from the Vietnam War who came here w his parents and nothing else. It was so great to see him receive an Oscar.

This was the time to be a real movie fan. George Lucas in his prime and a young Stephen Spielberg on a roll. All the Indy movies have Star Wars references in them and until the internet not many people caught them. The big one in this was the club in the beginning was Club Obi Wan. Such a fun trilogy of movies, we won't acknowledge the 4th because it was record breakingly awful.

In the beginning of the movie, when Indy, Willie, and Short Round are about to board the plane, the man (Weber) assisting, is played by Dan Aykroyd.

I read that there is a fan theory that all the Star Wars references are there because there is no Indiana Jones. The Indiana Jones movies are supposedly just dreams that Han Solo has when encased in the carbonite in Star Wars.

When I first saw this as a child that scene in the beginning where she tried to refuse to eat the food really brought home the importance to me of being a good guest. Which is already a big thing in my culture but to see them take the time to put that in there was great.
I love how they basically used the same idea they did in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope when Han Solo and Chewie chase the Stormtroopers and then have that quick "oh sh*t " moment when they run into loads of them and turn back. 36m 45 in this video 😆

I love how the opening scene shows how quickly what you value most can change given a situation - which parallels later when saving the kids and the village becomes more important than "fortune and glory, kid." Even though it's never considered the best in the series, it has always been my favorite since I was a kid.
I grew up watching this movie, but seeing yall react to it for the first time reminds me of how intense and suspenseful this movie is, and you start to take for granted. Thanks for breathing new life into it for me and making me feel like I did when I saw it as a kid again :)
At 5:48 (and other times) you can see the name of the club is "Club Obi Wan," a tribute to Star Wars creator George Lucas, who wrote the story (not the script) for this film. Btw, the third Indiana Jones movie is arguably the best of them all. Everyone loves it. You will too :)
I saw Temple of Doom when I was 9 in 1984, Absolutely my favorite. Dark, evil, scary and to me the best of them all. Such a sweet guilty pleasure. Top 5 ever!
The man at who secured transport for Jones at the beginning of the movie was played by Dan Aykroyd (you know, from Ghostbusters, Trading Places and Blues Brothers) ,

Took me 20 years to discover that this movie is actually a prequel to the first one. Told a few people who already knew this and a fair amount who like me, did not.
I’m old enough to have seen the first 3 in order at a cinema in the 1980’s. The first is the best, 3rd is good too. This is my least favourite.

When I was a little kid, "Temple of Doom" was the movie that introduced me to the concept of a "prequel." Before that, it had never even occurred to me that a series of movies wouldn't just keep moving forward in time to "the next chapter."

This one sometimes gets a bit of stick for Kate Capshaw's performance as Willy Scott but if I’m honest it’s easily my favourite of the original trilogy as much as I enjoy the other two movies.
Just an absolute roller coaster ride from beginning to end with non stop action.
I enjoyed the contrast and chemistry between her and Harrison/Indy with her ‘afraid to break a nail’ type mentality and found it funny.
Short Round (Data from The Goonies) is such a great character too and I loved the whole setting within the temple.

Little known fun fact, this is actually a prequel
I'm amazed that so many people, who've watched this movie for almost forty years didn't realize that it's a prequel. "1935" appears as the final opening credit. If you've watched Raiders enough times, you know it takes place in 1936. It's right there on the screen.

This one is my favorite too. I used to watch this one everytime I had to stay home sick from school as a kid for years. Had it recorded on VHS 📼.
Ke Huy Quan who plays Short Round won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor this year for his amazing performance in this year's Oscar winning Best Picture - "Everything Everywhere All at Once". A film I highly recommend you to check out.
I found it tedious and predictable. His performance was award-worthy, especially considering the vehicle he was dragging.

This was my personal favorite of the Indiana Jones films. Just like "The Empire Strikes Back", this film took our heroes to a dark place, and made you truly afraid for what could happen to them. Once again, an EXCELLENT review, Jay and Amber! Thank You Both!

My mother took me to see this in the theater. Left my older sister at home to watch our younger siblings. She was mad. I think my mom told her that we were just going to the grocery store.

It's interesting how you enjoyed this more than Raiders, as I've seen another reaction channel say the same thing. Especially when Temple of Doom is considered the weakest of the original trilogy of movies and was considered a disappointment on release. Personally I still think Raiders is the best Indy movie but I always loved Temple of Doom, and I could never understand the hate over it. Thanks for the great reaction.
Great reaction to an awesome movie! This is my favourite Indiana Jones movie, there are so many iconic moments... especially the shot in the mines where the camera pans up to Indy as he is about to rescue all the kids, is my favourite shot of any movie, its a shot of an ultimate hero and always gives me goosebumps! And the dark Temple of Doom score really adds to that moment and the rest of the movie.
Tears were welling up in my eyes, along with you guys, when the kids reunited with their parents, such a wholesome moment😭

I forgot how pivotal Short Round was in this movie!!! The actor grew up to be a stunts/karate coordinator before he landed his role in Everything, Everywhere All at Once - and he did SUCH a great job in that movie, too! #3 Indy is my fave - please watch it soon! :)
Gaaah! Will always love this movie. I remember watching it on New Year's Eve as a kid with my parents and some extended family. I was probably 8 or 9 and remember LOVING every minute of it! I even remember my family talking about how awesome and creepy much of it was, and how we had the Christmas tree up and everything. One of those memories that I will never forget. As an adult I must have watched this movie very regularly! So glad you guys watched it!
I have a similar memory. Family all sitting around, I was a little younger so was playing on the floor while kind of watching the movie. I remember everyone being grossed out by the eyeball soup and my Uncle getting a kick out of the whole gross dinner. Lol! Can't remember if it was around Christmas though. I've watched it several times since then. 😊

Indy on the bridge is one of the top moments in all of movies.

@@susanlab572 They did. This was one of my more anticipated reviews. It was very interesting to see this through a grown up lens vs a five year old perspective. I'm hoping for an interesting theme month for July or September Patriotic movies or back to school. I wish they had gone a little harder for black history but Glory would have been my top choice for the theme.
My favorite Indiana movie. I love the comedy timing of Willie & Short Round mixed with the dark themes. Really works well.
Your shock to the darkness and glee with how badass Short Round is, was fantastic to watch. You'll love the next one.

People always complain about Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Indy's refrigerator scene... I had forgotten until watching this reaction video, that he jumped out of an AIRPLANE! With no parachute, in a rubber raft... and survived! Indy's been pulling crazy stunts for a very long time :)

Fantastic movie. Harrison Ford is awesome in this role. Fits him so well. This movie is equally as good as Raider's of the Lost Ark. Lot of fun.

I’m glad you enjoyed this one. When I was a kid I seen it in the theatre and at that time I liked it more than Raiders. This film gets a lot of hate and I never understood why. It’s not a better film than Raiders, but it’s everything Raiders was not. It’s actions sequences are some of the best ever made and it’s just a nonstop fun ride.
Congratulations Ke Huy Quan (Short Round) on your well-deserved Oscar. Your story is an inspiration and possibly one of the most quintessential “American Dream” stories.

You guys should look up the "Wilhelm scream". It is a famous recorded scream sound effect. It is used on just about every Star wars and Indiana Jones movie, as well as tons of other big movies. Some directors try to use it in as many of their films as possible.
Once you hear it, you'll recognize it all the time.

The song at the beginning is the title track for the Cole Porter musical, Anything Goes. The kid driving the car is Data from The Goonies, Ke Huy Quan. Indiana is an adventurer and preserver of history. There's no way he wouldn't do any and everything to beat the bad guys.
I was hoping you guys would react to 9 to 5. Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin. Saw it in 8th grade as a double feature with Private Benjamin.

Air resistance from the raft would actually slow you quite a bit from a slower older plane that was probably only going 100+ MPH unlike modern jets that are going 500+. Also, they landed on snow which would buffer more. So it is possible to land as they did ... possible.
In addition to landing on a slope which dissipates kinetic energy and reduces impact.
Prime Time Spielberg of the 80's was untouchable. This had the best climax ending of any film. Doom is the most fun of the series.

I loved the dark more adulty tone of this one. Unpopular opinion but my favourite.
I remember when this movie was on tv when I was a kid. My mom was watching this movie. She made us close our eyes during the dinner scene with them cutting open the snake. May my mom R.I.P. she passed away in March. Great woman and she loved seeing all my friends

Great reaction guys! Another film series I really hope you continue watching and complete is the "Back To The Future" series which is one of the most entertaining film series of all time. I watched all three films in the theater and I know you would love "Back To The Future 2" and "Back To The Future 3". Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd are so awesome together in these films.
Spielberg was going through a divorce so this was a very dark time for him in life. Many believe this is why the movie was so gloomy at times. However he met his future and present wife making this film: KATE CAPSHAW! This will always be my favorite Indy! GREAT REACTIONS YOU TWO...U REALLY TOOK ME BACK!

Willie Scott was played by Kate Capshaw, who was Stephen Spielberg's wife (also the mother of Jessica Capshaw who played Arizona from Grey's Anatomy). Like the others said, Ke Huy Quan (Everything everywhere at once) who played Short Round got his start in showbiz because of this movie. He would go on to play Data in the Goonies after TOD...
Capshaw wasn't Spielberg's wife at the time. They met making the film.

The name of the little boy, Short Round, in this movie is Ke Huy Quan. This year's Oscars (2023) he won the Oscar for Best Supporting male actor for the movie, Everything Everywhere All at Once after a decades long hiatus from acting. Back stage after he won you can see him and Harrison Ford hugging. His acceptance speech was inspiring.

Spielberg wishes he hadn't made this one so dark but at least he got a new wife out of it in Kate Capshaw. I thought they tried too hard to top the first one with bugs instead of spiders, snakes and gross food. You are going to absolutely love the next one, The Last Crusade, as it is lighter and a lot more fun.
Please also continue the Back to the Future trilogy.

@Amber and J this was my LEAST favorite now is MY favorite because of its darkness and the hope it provides after, a great villain and some amazing action scenes and his side kick too. Was amazing fun to see you both discuss it. @Amber your breakdown as you watched it was very insightful.
Besides being the second film in the original trilogy, it also helped usher in the wide usage of the PG-13 rating. While it wasn't the first film to receive the rating, it was held up as to why the rating was needed, especially after many parents were furious that the film contained so much disturbing imagery they didn't want their children to see. I enjoyed this film, but my favorite is the third one, which I'm sure you'll both watch and hopefully enjoy.
