After many years of watching, that statement while it sounds great, it is a lie. As stated earlier in the film, having loyalty to the Core is the most important thing even above God, to Marines. Hence, they are NOT "supposed to fight for people who couldn't fight for themselves". They are supposed to follow commands to reach an objective or die in the process of completion of the 'mission' at ALL costs. (even death) Marines or any soldier, for that matter, are NOT allowed to question or oppose a direct command, even if it is immoral, unethical, or criminal.

    • @brianharris3714

@silverlobo2135 Not since Nuremberg. The Code of Military Justice states clearly that no soldier is to follow an order that violates international, federal, state, or even municipal law, and if they do, they’ll be held responsible not only in civilian courts, but in military court as well. The military is not above the law, nor should it be.

He also sat for everyone else's scenes.
Big actors will typically leave when they're not being filmed and someone will sit in and read their lines for others to react to.
Nicholson sat and gave his full performance even when he wasn't the primary in the shots and the rest of the cast has said his every read was exactly the same which helped feed the other actors.

My all-time favorite Tom Cruise movie definitely in the top 50 movies of all time. Tom Cruise gave an interview about Jack Nicholson saying he came in for the first reading. Everybody was sloppy and all over the place. Jack came in and delivered all of his lines perfectly in character He stood, smiled and said children that's how it's done. Turned around and walked out. He said I learned to be an actor that day. Jack made everybody lift their game. That's why this movie was so good.

Those high ranking Officers and many SSNCOs get away with things that would get them looked up for a very, very long time on the civilian world. Assualt, DUI, hard drugs, r*pe, even confirmed inc*st and other people losing their lives under questionable circumstances. The Lifers cover for each other and then when they finally have to EAS they become private contractors for the government.

Jack Nicholson is a great professional. When shooting that last scene, they were first shooting Tom Cruise shots, reaction shots, and various other angles. They did Nicholson's main shot last. As he said his lines for the secondary shots he gave his full performance. People told him he should hold back and save it for his main shot. He felt they should have the performance they were reacting to, and he still had that amazing performance for his shot at the end.

What a great reaction from both of you. This is an outstanding movie. The entire cast worked so well together supporting one another that it worked so well.
Like others have pointed out that very famous line, "You can't handle the truth" is an iconic line in cinematic history.
Yes, Kiefer Sutherland was in Lost Boys and was on another movie you reacted to, Stand By Me...the leader of the boys that arrived to claim the body. Stand by Me was also directed by Few Good Men director Rob Reiner who also directed other movies you have reacted to The Princess Bride and Misery.
I saw this when it first came out and you could hear the audience gasp when Colonel Jessup said he ordered the code red.
Cuba Gooding Jr appears in this movie and was in another movie with Tom, "Jerry McGuire" where he has a iconic line too, "Show me the money." Cuba won a supporting Oscar for that movie "Jerry McGuire."

Also, I served in the Marines until 2002 (Corporal) and believe me, there are a ton of Colonel Jessup and Lieutenant Kendricks in the Marine Corps. Luckily, the good intentioned Marines heavily outnumber those types. In essence, proportionally this is not so different from normal society. But we should hold our military to higher standards...those standards are attached to you the moment you join. The Marine Corps has 3 "Core Values": Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

The guy who wrote this movie, Aaron Sorkin, also wrote the movie "The American President", and the TV series The West Wing, and the tv series "Sports Night". They are my favorites (along with this). You can tell an Aaron Sorkin movie or series by the smart, witty banter. You have to see "Sports Night" both of you will love it!! But "West Wing" is superb!!!

The cast is incredible. Everybody did an amazing job. Also the director, Rob Reiner and the writer Aaron Sorkin are incredible. Aaron Sorkin has written for TV shows as well as movies. West wing and Newsroom are ones of the best TV series of all time in my opinion.

Mainstream Hollywood just doesn't make movies like this anymore, so many great performances and Cruise is very underrated as a talent. The guy can act, and he went toe to toe with one of the greatest in Jack Nicholson.

I love this movie. It's a fun rewatch every time. The amazing military doing the precision drill routine at the beginning, the acting, the friendship between Danny and Sam (I love that conversation between them about "I wouldn't put Jessup on the stand, not in a million years. But here's the thing, neither your dad nor I are lead counsel for the defense. The question is - what would YOU do?"), all the dialogue, the fiery courtroom drama, the intensity... it's a terrific film.
"You can't handle the truth!" is the often-quoted line from this film, but honestly, I love the line Jack has after that. When Daniel finally demands, "DID YOU ORDER THE CODE RED?" and Jack yells "YOU'RE GOD DAMN RIGHT I DID!" Ooooooooooooh. Shivers!
So so glad you enjoyed it!

If you'd like to see the greatest movie ever, about a Jury deliberating on a case, watch the original 12 Angry Men (not the remake). It's an older movie with a star studded cast including the legendary Henry Fonda (One of the top 5 actors in history in my opinion).
