Been doing this for years. The hole is very small but I add some permatex clear silicone sealant over it anyway. Seals it from leaking and against water and dirt etc.
This is very important
Hi... How does the rubber boot hold up after puncturing and sealing multiple times? I assume you do this about once a year or so?.. Thanks
I've done the same thing with a small amount of glue on my outer tie rod as long as the filler grease is set properly it's all good.
@@mpcp27The grease will ooze out if a small amount of transparent permatex glue isn't applied but some of the newer outer tie rod has a grease fitting at the top.
@@darrinfaulkner8911 Nah, just use Flex Seal. You can seal leaks under water with that stuff.
Brilliant video , I've bought one of these and am going to do it on all my cars . "Sealed for life" is a stupid term , fine for people who only keep their cars for a few years but we run ours into the ground.
And if we are serious about consuming less and being greener we've got to repair things and make them last longer and this video is a great help to do that. Thank you so much for this.
Glad i could help Chris, i agree 100 percent.
I own a needle just like that and was motivated to try it after watching your video. A few months ago I replaced my lower ball joint with a Duralast ball joint. After driving in heavy rain recently, it sounded like a rusty door hinge every time I turned steering wheel to the right. Boot was not torn and it was firmly in place. I pumped some grease just like you did, sealed the hole with RTV and now the noise is gone. Most importantly this helped me diagnose my problem without spending extra money. Thanks for making the video.
Thanks for the comment and watching.
Where did you buy that grease neddle at???
@@dolphsantitho5301 I bought it on Amazon. Snaps in easily but can be tedious to remove. You also have to hold it straight else the grease will come out of the joint.
@@dolphsantitho5301 I left a link in the description thank you for the comment.
Just had a ball joint break on a small bus, the wheel was horizontal, thank god that the chofer didnt crash, the wheel basically fell off and he driving at low speed, we had a mechanic check it the day before and he said it was fine,
So we wont be going back to him for anything thats for sure, Im now researching how and what to grease on our vehicles.
Kevin, at 63 y/o both my hips had to be replaced. I'm told I should expect about 10 years before they give me problems again. Too bad these new hip joints can't be zerk fitted. I'm 70 now, so I can look forward to a few more good years. :-) :-)
Thanks for the comment Bent.
You can always use the grease needle
Need some k2 vitamin
I'm 65 and had two major spine surgeries and a minor stroke, all within the past 3 years. I'm doing pretty good now and plan to be around for another two decades. Cheers!
Just the video I needed to see! Doing this to my wife's crv ball joints tomorrow. Bought some silicone to seal up the little pin hole. Thanks
Mine has held up for years with no silicon but good idea thanks for the comment.
I've installed grease zerks on my ball joints and tie rods with a small drill and just threaded in the self tapping zerk
That works thanks.
Holy crap. You can also add your own grease filler fitting if you were really dedicated, but this is the best cost-effective means. Thanks Kevin!
thank you for watching
too much work to use only each 1 or 2 years
Excellent video, had a terrible squeak caused by no grease in my ball joint, thank you!
It's worked out pretty good so far for me thanks for watching.
I keep 3-4 of these needles on hand because it's easy to break or bend them when pushing them through the rubber boot. After sealing the needle hole with silicone seal I spray some armorall or stp protectant on the boots to keep them from getting brittle and cracking and falling apart. I don't want to change ball joints or tie rods ever if I can avoid it.
I have seen some people say to put some jb weld at the base of the needle to add support. I used jb weld putty and built a cone support halfway up the needle. Haven't tested it as yet.
I just drill a small hole and install my own grease zerk fitting inside . It works with vehicles and riding mowers. And wouldn't take much time and effort then it would to pierce the boot just make sure you get all the metal shavings out of the hole before installing. But if the boot was already damaged then this technique would work just as well. 👍
Good info thank you
I was thinking about doing this, that way you get grease into the actual ball itself.
Definitely helps with my lawn mower... Even though my lawn mower doesn't require it
Thank you. You gave me the idea to use a marinade meat injection needle. Works like a charm. Again thank you.
Glad i could help
great video I have just done all of the ball joints on my 2001 VW caravelle .. I disconnected the steering arm ball joint and wiggled it to spread the fresh grease around .
Thank you so much my friend..you are genuinly helping people who are suffering this way they do .. i spent almost 200 for bottom and still my car is not as good as it used to be
the suspension done and alignment guy does not tell what needs to be done and he alignes the car and i see tires gone.. now i have tires but ending up with lower control arm and sway bar and axle.. so now one after the other .. all due to simple greesing.. and new ones does not come with greesing so they are screwed as such.. TIME EFFORT MONEY and FRUSTRATION just for this simple greesing.. TIRES ISSUE.. so great business but earning not correctly..
Thanks for watching glad i can help.
Just a quick tip for anyone thinking about trying this, actually two.
1. Put the hole as close to the top as possible. (prevents a lot of grease from coming out like you see in this video.)
2. Seal the hole up immediately because you will loose most of your injected grease within the year...
Thanks for the comment Lance.
@@Robinson-Homestead Thanks for the video Kevin
What kind of sealer will work with the grease coming out of the hole?
@@dvader3000 bathroom silicone is what I will try
@@chrisadams6595 Any fast drying water resistant silicon will do
Good job, You did an outstanding job teaching.
Thank you!
I'd put hey layer of Grease all over the boot too to stop the boot from drying up and cracking from the water and salt. Greece isn't going to hurt the boot at all after all it's all on the inside of the boot
. i just got a ford van , and i changed the oil and was putting in new break pads looking around i couldnt see any zerks. i scratched my head , then looked again. no zerks ! what the hell ?. now i know what to do. thanks for the tip Kevin .
It work out for me thanks for the comment glad to help
This is what I like about Moog products. Almost all their ball joints come with grease fittings.
Thanks for watching Aron
Moog is junk now!! Federal-Mogul sold Moog to a Chinese manufacturer, (Tenneco I believe) and quality has slipped VERY badly. Parts won't even last a year. Truly garbage. You don’t want to buy ANY chassis, suspension, etc. parts made in southeast Asia... period. Back in the golden years, Moog parts were manufactured solely in the USA, people wrongly assume that is still true today. All the brand names are Chinesium now, including Raybestos, Wagner, NAPA Premium, etc.
If OEM parts are not an option, look into NAPA's 'Chassis' line (made in the USA by Dana/Spicer). Costs 3x more but much better quality than Moog.
I've never seen this before! What a good idea!!
Thanks for watching.
@@Robinson-Homestead gooooey oooooweeee 🐷🐷🐷
Thanks for the tip. For those guys worried about the hole if glue or rtv doesn't work maybe try a short aluminum pop rivet. 👍
Great idea
Yes that would work , then you can find and use the same hole again in a year or two
WOW, Great idea.. Ill put apop rivet and glue that rivet, resuse the same hole in a few years
@@raulcmiranda . Isn't a rivet much bigger than the hole from the needle?
At the 2:28 time I drilled and tapped a 1/4"/28 NF into the end cap.
A NF tap use a #2 then if shallow use a bottoming tap.
With going into the end cap you put grease where it needs to go.
Wire bush the cap and if needed Epoxy them in, as they are permanent anyway.
I forgot to grease them yesterday. dammmmm
That is the third one I have done this to.
Good info thanks
Hey if it's out of grease, where did it go,,does grease evaporate,,always wondered,... anyway I'm going to buy one of those needles and give it a try .......thanks..
What a good question I'm not sure I can even answer that lol.
You can use AT-205 Re-Seal to plug the needle holes. It is better than silicone.
Great idea thanks
You just make my day and save me some money. Thanks
Thanks for watching glad to help.
Adding grease is better than not having any grease and might make your ball joints last the whole life of the vehicle
✌❤🇨🇦
Thanks for the comment Ed.
Thanks this video was very helpful
No problem! Glad to help thanks for the comment.
I actually bought the needle tip for the grease gun and greased the joints on the cradles through the rubber boots and all the screeching stop . Thanks again for the info , it really help and saved me lots of money
Thanks! It was crazy making trying to figure out what was going on. A lot of replacement parts come sealed AND dry 🤦♀️
Your right thanks for the comment.
I'm not high on the idea of putting a hole in what otherwise might be a sealed boot.
automatic MOT failure in the UK.
ball joints with grease nipples are often available as are good brands that last 5 years+ 100k
Now you got a pinhole in a seal boot.
H B you supposed to use the black gasket maker on it afterwards to seal it back. He half ass showed how to fix it.
@@Htownrule ok then that makes sense.
If not broke don't fix it!
appreciate it. I have a squeaky ball joint on my ford fusion was gonna rig some kinda syringe. Never knew they made these my squeak will be gone tomorrow their 45 at my local auto store
Thanks for the comment
I just replaced both mine, they cost me like 9 bucks each.
If I was going to regrease I'd undo the nut, pop it up, get under the rubber without making the hole that's just going to leak it back out.
For next year's inspection I'll buy new bottom ball joints, you never know when old ones will fail.
UK MOT will fail boots with holes if leaking.
We're Really Relay Camping
That’s why God created silicone.
Thanks for the video! Hey I don't know much about UA-cam rules but I did just watch another video about greasing CV joints that used a few seconds of your footage and not sure if that's allowed!
Thanks for the info.
Still very helpful. Thank you Kevin.
Thank you
Excellent $$$$Saver!!
Thank you Mario glad to help.
Can I use it on my lawnmower?
Yes for sure Donald.
😂😂
I think you could use it on a lawnmower, if your lawnmower needs greased! Please check the video, though...🙂
Kevin - very entertaining!!
You should get a Lock-n-lube fitting to hold that needle.
Good idea thanks
Going to have to give that a try. Think it will work on my knee?
Thanks for the comment.
I see the boot swell
Looks like it would resist getting down into the ball joint its self
This has worked great for me no issues thanks for the comment and watching.
Thanks.
A relaltive just described this tool to me recently.
I'd never seen one!
Good job
Thank you.
I just got some suspension part with no grease fitting lol... No grease in the boots/seal whatsoever... Lesser of the 2 evils... Gotta do what you gotta do👍
Yep that was the easiest fix for me, thanks for watching.

Good day Interesting. Your grease gun coupler, take it apart , other side has 3 parts like out side & reverse, your grease coupler is new & should couple to zerk. Thanks
Kroil is the best... the oil that creeps.
It does work great thanks for the comment and watching.
Thanks!
No problem! thanks so much for the SUPPER THANKS John Dilenno it helps and I really appreciate it.
Just saw your video tutorial on using the needle to inject grease into your ball joints, The question I have is do you have to seal the hole once its done bleeding out the excess grease?
It had on grease in it so I didn't think a small leak would matter. You could put some silicone on the hole.
Hi Thanx for a great video. Where can I obtain this magic instrument?
Yes
Great cheap fix! Thx...2002 Ford Escape drivers side squeeks when turning....everything is tight & in good condition, just very annoying. Absolutely trying this. What kind of grease are you using? Grease looked red like wheel bearing grease..
Just a wheel bearing grease.
suggest using AT 205 reseal and spray on any bushings and joints for lubrication.
Thanks for the comment G Bush.
I recommend that you seal the hole afterwards with liquid electrical tape.
Thanks good tip
HOW WELL DOES TAPE HOLD TO GREASE
@@2bnax it adheres to the outside of the boot. Just clean all the grease off the outside of the boot and it adheres fine.
a good tip is to use the tip of a hot soldering iron to seal the hole up.
Thanks for the tip.
Do you have to plug it with a piece of rubber. Like push it in with a needle
No it is a small hole it will be fine
Open and close jaws for the needle to be okay sir great video

Sir i'd like to put grease at my chevy TB ball joint what kind of grease you use
You can use a wheel bearing Grease.
Cool video!!! 👍👍
Thank you
Good vid.
Just what I needed. Really works well.
When you replace the ball joints or what ever the after market parts and even some OEM replacement parts come with it. Factories just pump out parts cheap now a days. Knowing the problems they think we have become a throw away society. Some people you and figure out ways to extend the life.
Inside the ball does not receive grease !!! I already checked !!! Thanks!
Worked great for no issues so far thanks for the comment.
so i want to do this but i will want to seal the hole after, im thinking either scilicone/superglue or liquid tape. i hear people do silicone but feel liquid tape used for wire repair would really work best, thoughts?
Give it a try i really don't know which would be best i didn't use anything and mine was fine, let me know how it works thanks.
3 squirts of grease is all you want each ball joints
Thanks Gary
Awesome ...
Thanks for watching.
Rtv or some type of sealant would be nice to apply where you made a hole in the boot.
Good idea
Kevin, I thought a grease nipple/zerk fitting could be added to most joints that don't have one. Guess I was wrong?
They can. Drill and tap a hole to the thread size of a zerk.
Thanks Kevin ...I want to ask you if the hole of the needle will makes water or moisture to get inside the joint with time ? Or not ?
Know issues so far mm Domi.
Know issues so far mm Domi.
Very tiny hole.
i have other cars for which i am heading now to get the greesing done to them.. JUST ONE question kindly help.. There are different greesings .. not sure as to which one to get for what..
I use wheel bearing grease on wheels or an all propose grease
I knew you were smart when I saw the kroil.
thanks for watching
What grease better to use for ball TR joints light or heavy type? Thank you.
not sure
Heavy
Does the grease injector needle dose it wreck the boot on ball joints rubber or tie rod when you put a pin hole through boot
It works great no issues thanks for the comment.
Three or four pulls on the grease gun handle is enough you do not want to over inflate the rubber boot remember moderation is the key. If you over inflate the rubber boot with grease it's only going to continue to squirt out the hole.
thanks for the information Gary
I'm with Gary on this one. As soon as that boot starts to expand...you're done!
whats the grease used ? is those commom lithium grease for bearings good for that ?
Any kind would work fine i think.
Lifehack to know!! thanks!!
Your welcome Chris.
could you install a grease fitting using a tap on these components it would be a lot easier to grease in the future
Good idea thanks
@@Robinson-Homestead better yet install self tapping fittings
Hmmmm. What keeps that grease i nsude the joint if you pierce it with that needle? Seems that counterintuitive.
Never had any issues still works great.
Got my wheels turning .. no pun intended. But . How about after you inject the grease.. you inject the permatex. Just a smidgeon
I didn't use permatex but you can try it if you want.
How about putting the grease gun on the fitting BEFORE you put the needle in the boot.Greasing ball joints 101 grease until the rubber boot is firm NOT until grease comes out the boot. That is overfilling, just damages the boot in the long term.
Thanks for the comment
You know that grease gun tip loosens and tightens around the zerk fittings?
Thanks for the comment
Thank u for dis
Your welcome
This is great. Where can I obtain the magical instrument?
Any auto parts store carries them along with their grease guns and grease. Canadian tire, auto zone, princess auto etc.
Find a needle that screws onto the gun
Good idea.
How can I use this for my race atv I have been looking for a way, I have no grease fittings.
after you can glue hol with silicon
I think that would work fine I guess you would have to clean it good first thanks for the comment.

Ball joints and tie rods
why is the grease gun situation so hard?? can never tell if anything is going in because grease is always shooting out the around the connection..
Your grease fitting might be plugged up try to remove it and clean it first.
What kind of grease works best?
You can use wheel bearing Grease
@@Robinson-Homestead thank you! I believe it must be a synthetic kind so as not to eat through the rubber.
Thank you for watching.
NGLI 2, GC-LB
Great video but I’m not understanding how you put a hole in the boot with the needle & the grease manages to stay in the boot without slowly spilling out that small hole over time?
Great point! no issues yet
Turn end of grease gun clockwise after inserting needle to lock gun end to needle. No coming off after that unless unscrewed. No mess.
Thank you for the tip.
What grease gun is that and what kind of grease did you use?
Can usually just remove the boot, clean/grease the joint, and reinstall the boot
Good tip thanks
Is it easy on all vehicles?
Hmm, when you make a hole in it, does it make any sense when you fill it with grease? All the grease will come out through the hole I gues..
It is just a tiny pin hole so it doesn't come out, we still have this car and have never had any problems with it.
Aren't you supposed to place the vehicle on jack stands (jack stands located on the frame) to "unload" the joint and allow the grease to go where it will do the most good? 🤔
It is on a jack stand.
hI! How did you block the whole you made?
I didn't have to working great thanks for the comment.
Rusted tie rod, ball joints lead to harder stearing?
Thanks Dan for watching.
If you inject in the center, grease will go around less holes.😊
Thank you so much for the good tip.
What happen if I put grease in without any seal?
I haven't had any issues with mine so you should be fine.
Did you add any sealant on the rubber after? Did it hold?
No sealant still working great.
How long will this last for
It's worked for me for a long time thanks for the comment and watching.
No thank you for this post. Just purchased a 2010 Nissan Altima changed out tired rod cause it was torn. One of the control arm bushings is torn on the top part do you think this will work for that as well? As a fix for the time being to get rid of noise
Quick question where can I find one of those needles for my grease gun any idea
In the description I left a link.
Most any auto parts store
Amazon guy ask 4 needle injector.
Heck yeah!
Those needles are for slip yoke joint greasing I thought. Just drill and tap a hole in your ball joint and add a grease zerk.
Great tip!
The steel drill chips will destroy them
@@iamher6422 no they will not. As you drill, the drill bit pulls the chips out by design. And if someone is worried about when you finally break through and chips falling in, just have a shop vac on during this process. I’ve been doing this for years and can assure you that is incorrect.
@@hillbobaggins I own lathes, millers, and wood lathes, as well. I’ve been machining for decades. Chips will always fall through. Maybe you’ve been lucky thus far, but I wouldn’t risk it... jm2s
@@iamher6422 yeah no problem. But seriously, a ball joint is ridiculously strong. Imagine what they go through on a daily basis. It’s just a ball and socket joint lubricated with extremely thick grease. How would tiny tiny chips (and few at that) introduced inside destroy them? I’m beyond confused at this logic. Not trolling; genuinely interested in your thoughts.
I really dont think this works to well you punched holes in the boot and now the grease will leak out and dirt will get in. On the jeep when suspension parts ware out I replace them with parts that allow you to grease them
