- Want to know how to get more life our of suspension components? In this video we go over a simple maintenance task that should be performed with every oil change, that's a chassis lube. Performing a chassis lube is a simple task but is typically over looked by owners. Make sure you grease the ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar bushings, drive shafts and U-joints whenever a zerk fitting is installed.

Awesome, now you know you can do it every oil change and get a lot of life out of your truck! Also if you have to change parts, MOOG typically will give a grease fitting where typically the factory part was sealed.

I got zerk fitting ball joints. I filled the ball joint buy after about 3 months I noticed a bunch of grease on the control arm. Is this normal? I just keep pumping grease into this thing and it leaks out?
I am new to car maintenance; this video helped a lot
Glad you found it helpful!
I was always taught minimum of 2 to 3 pumps of grease does the trick on most fittings. Recently put on new front sway bar links and I had a bunch of grease spewed out on the mounting surface. I think I over greased them and the excess was just squeezing out and the seals weren't actually bad, just error on my part.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thank you for the video. Also, I have discovered during my years of DIYing, I have found many parts come with grease fittings oem or aftermarket. Just need to research and/or ask your manufacturer’s automotive service center or seasoned auto store employee.
Thanks for sharing!
You can also buy grease gun fittings that will allow you to access hard to reach grease nipples - I just bought a kit with several attachments that makes the job a lot easier. Great video🤘
Great point! I bought one too, I'll probably make a follow up video for the new u-joints in the truck.
What’s the kid called?
I saw a YT video on greasing different suspension parts that do not have a grease fitting using a grease gun needle available from most auto parts supply stores The video showed how to use the needlel to pierce thru the rubber boot,( at the top to force the grease down and push the contaminates out the bottom), then clean the penetration's point with any type of solvent, and seal it with super glue. Be sure to mark the penetration point so you can use it again for greasing's next time. Seemed to make sense to me.
Thank you for sharing this!
Thanks for the video, I'm recently widowed and trying to learn how to do simple maintenance to my 99 Chevy suburban. I've been hearing some clattering and smelling burned grease/oil from behind the tire. Appreciate the teaching.
I'm sorry for your loss. I'm glad this video was able to help you 🙂
I must share....greasing the barring wasn't the only reason for noise, etc. I took it in for both front calipers and brake line to be replaced. However I appreciate you sharing your wisdom and saved your channel for the next project.
@@aharo3 Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm glad some of the videos will help you in the future 🙂
great video.. I have recently heard and felt a creaking sound emanating from the front suspension and steering of my 2001 VW Caravelle . after viewing a guy greasing his SEALED ball joints I copied his method and drilled a 3.32 hole in the ball joint where a grease nipple would normally be situated .. After injecting grease into all of the rod ends and ball joints the annoying ceaking and vibration had gone and my front suspension and steering was so much more fluid . I had recently replaced the shock absorbers front and back and I was almost convinced it was one of the new shocks creaking . the local agricultural supplier had some grease nipples and stainless steel needles which provided the perfect way to add grease into the joints .
That's awesome! You're definitely going to get more life out of your vehicle by doing this!
My engine was squeaking, and I put grease where the oil goes. No more squeaking. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing what not to do!
Good job pointing out the bleeder valve, on the caliper, as a point not to grease.
Thanks for watching! 🙂
What happened if u do grease it ?
How do you know what kind of grease to use? Do you use the same stuff for the suspension as the u joints?
It'll say on the label what the grease is suitable for. I've been using Lucas Red and Tacky lately.
You can get a needle for those "ungreasable" tie rods. Works very well
Thanks for the feedback!
I found out today that a national change tire center that does my oil changes, does not/ has not been greasing the fittings, now i have a busted drive shaft. I prseumed it was being done with every oil change. They said they have not done them for 15 years.... OMG. Beware ppl, your car is not getting a grease job when you get the oil changed.
Thank you for sharing your experience!
Is it true modern cars dont have these grease fittings? My car’s service schedule does not mentions lubricating the suspension or the chassis
Ya most of them are sealed it seems. You can still get aftermarket that has fittings. The manufacturer saves money that way and the end user has to purchase mire replacement parts.
AnthonyJ350 then is it a good idea to spray some lube or apply some grease under the boots?
@@PlayJewel it COULD keep dirt out for longer supposedly
Be sure to use a lithium complex grease fortified with moly. It’s thicker/dryer and feels powdery. Regular less thick grease options are the major fail reason for off-road use. Specifically for the control arm ball joints.

Nice job on the video! Very well made and you cover a variety of vehicles. thank you!

When I attached the hose to the fitting on my upper control arms the grease comes out from the top instead of the bottom do I need a different tip on the hose
Tip probably needs replacement. Is it old?
I've heard of drilling, tapping, and installing a grease fitting.
I'm sure you can, I just prefer parts that had the intention of having grease used from the design stage.
Do you need to loosen the grease fittings or do you just attach the grease gun with the fitting tight?
Just attach it right away.
you can buy needles with zerk fitting on them at auto stores. then just poke a hole in a boot and fill it up. don't forget to mark your holes, don't want to lose them.

I notice on man almost every one of these videos after greasing you rip the little connector loose from the zert if you'll look more carefully at it or read the back of the package on one that's new it twists on and twist off loosen it up put it on the zert then twist it tight. To take it off again to twist it couple of turns and lift it off look at 1 when it's new the 3 or 4 Little clamps inside go over the top of the zert about like hooking a trailer over the towing ball hitch then you tighten it up it stays on until you loosen it. Dont rip it off. now you have both hands-free to pump your grease gun.

Anybody knows if pump too much grease could get the boot broken? I don’t wanna get a leak while my goal was keep longer life lub

So will ball joints with grease points last indefinitely?
They can last a long time but it depends on the quality of the part, weight of the vehicle and driving conditions
Is there any truth to something I heard lately about some grease is not compatible and may cause wear. This being caused by different formulations in different grease brands?
As long as it says "chassis parts" on the tube you should be fine.
I have that exact grease gun and I can't seem to get the grease to go into the fitting, just globs up all around and wastes all my grease. Any advice on this
It does this on all of your grease fittings. My grease gun did this on a grease fitting that was seized closed. Changed the fitting and it worked just fine.
Be careful, there is pressure inside joints, nipples, etc and can explode grease out fast enough to do damage. There's a very important reason why grease guns warn you of serious injury or death and amputation... When grease gets shot into your body it isn't compatible with your tissues. It causes necrosis, gangrene, compartment syndrome and sepsis. It will feel like a little sting and you must IMMEDIATELY go to the ER for surgery if you feel that little sting. They have to cut out all tissues that touched grease. It's called 'pressure injection injury' and can happen from paint sprayers as well. They sell safety fittings and there is info on how to minimize risks. The pressure between the nipple and the nozzle can reach 15000psi and a droplet of grease can kill you. Sorry, I'm honestly not trying to sound all fatalist and stuff, but this ends careers and lives. Livelihoods gone to machismo. Do it for your family and your future, learn the risks.

No mention of the type/rating of grease to use or avoiding incompatible greases.
You could read the label of what you're purchasing. It says suitable for chassis on the label
@@AnthonyJ350 NLGI GC-LB greases can be made from different bases and additives. Some have soap based thickeners, some are lithium etc. The uses rating does not guarantee compatibility.
@@dvcavall Just put Lucas Red and Tacky in. How are you going to test the grease if someone else did a chassis lube or you bought the vehicle used?
@@AnthonyJ350 Exactly my point. The recommendation would be to use the manufactures grease such as Mopar chassis grease for a jeep and hope what was used before isn't incompatible. I have had grease liquify because they were two incompatible greases. The industry should standardize on colors for the different base types that are compatible and problem would be solved. Lucas Red n Tacky is Lithium based. If what was used before was aluminum, calcium or clay based the grease will fail. The point I was making was that grease is not all the same and that there are other important considerations besides how to pump grease into a zerk fitting. . Search for a grease compatibility chart and you will see the problem.

Noise might be coming from your steering rack, possibly a bearing? Also how often do you change the power steering fluid?
Beware, all grease guns are not the same. If your grease gun bleeds, that is, oil is leaking out of the gun, while it waits for your next oil change, then you are losing the lubricant from the grease and all that is left is the "paste" and not much of any lubricant.

my new 2018 Sierra only has these on the tie rod ends. Upper and lower are non grease able. oh, and no dip stick for the trans. really chops my hide.
The ball joints being sealed doesn't surprise me. But no dipstick for the transmission is sad. I really don't like the trend of new vehicles. I'm probably going to look for a 2007 Classic 4X4 to build up eventually and just have two GMT-800s. They want you to get rid of your truck after 5 years it seems.
Yes, they do. My 2006 GMC yukon 4x4 has been a great truck! It has the 5.3 with 4.10 gears. I installed the cognito steering braces, steering dampener, and heavy duty tie rod sleeves. The front diff and transfer case have given me zero problems. I did install the case saver to avoid the pump rub issues. I use my yukon's 4x4 at least 4 times a year on some pretty gnarly trails.
Yeah that's because car companies know that most people dont take care of their cars so they do that to make them last longer for the average driver even though they cut the life of those parts down for the people who actually care about their cars it's pretty sad... Just dont be fooled by the "lifetime" transmission fluid it lasts 100k miles technically but the optimal time to change it to make your tranny last longer is about 60k also the rubber boots tend deteriorate before the grease does so I would use some of that spray sh!t that makes your rubber boots last longer. In my opinion they shouldn't have done that people who care about their cars deserve the extra life of parts people who don't deserve the extra cost.
