  • This is my The Son Movie Review. What is your The Son Review or Movie Reaction. Explain your thoughts on this 2022 Hugh Jackman movie in theaters down below. From director florian zeller.
A drama that follows a family as it struggles to reunite after falling apart. THE SON centers on Peter (Jackman), whose hectic life with his infant and new partner Beth (Kirby) is upended when his ex-wife Kate (Dern) appears with their son Nicholas (McGrath), who is now a teenager. The young man has been missing from school for months and is troubled, distant, and angry. Peter strives to take care of Nicholas as he would have liked his own father to have taken care of him while juggling work, his and Beth's new son, and the offer of his dream position in Washington. However, by reaching for the past to correct its mistakes, he loses sight of how to hold onto the Nicholas in the present.

I think people missed the point. We as an audience are supposed to get frustrated with the son. I believe that the director wants to put us in the shoes of the parents. We see their experience which is why we are not shown the origin of the depression or the effects behind closed doors. It's Hugh Jackman's world view, such as it was with Anthony Hopkins in the film The Father.

As a family member of a struggling teenager, I think this movie pictures exactly the struggle of what families go through. The pain and suffering is not only the patient’s one, but the entire support system. The struggle is real for family members, with teenagers who just can’t figure out what is wrong with them, and the entire family suffering from the consequences. For me, this movie hit real close to home and finally showed the family perspective…

I just saw the film today and it really worked for me. I felt everything I think I was supposed to feel. The performances were all good and Jackman was fantastic. Sure I would’ve liked more development of the son and his depression issues, but this film and it’s story really connected with me.

I agree, however, the son's issues are like the proverbial iceberg. It would take an entire 2-hour movie to reveal enough to begin to understand him. I have dealt with these issues with my daughter for 9 years, and it took me half of that time to fully understand her experience. 9 years on, I'm still just focusing on keeping her alive. Had Nicholas lived, his father hopefully would have learned to lower the bar a bit and meet him where he is instead of trying to make him meet his expectations.

This film is a about the failure of the parents. From the divorce, to the self harm, to all the warning signs and cries of help from the son. It’s a film about the consequences of selfishness, and not thinking about the ripple effects of the decisions you choose to take. It’s a tragic film that you could only, honestly watch once. But it’s also a very important film for us who don’t suffer from metal health issues to be aware and try, for a change, to listen to these people, instead of doing what we think they need.

Disagree, clearly the parents loved and cared for their son.
Sadly depression can't be cured by love. The son would still be dealing with depression whether the parents were divorced or not.
We see throughout the movie both the father and mother trying to understand their son.
It's realistic to the real world that no parent wants to believe their child is going through an issue that they can't fix.
The parents' only problem was just leaving that treatment center too soon

@@aka4god the film points to the son’s depression being caused by the trauma of his parents divorce. Hence the cut scenes of happier times when they were all together etc. mental health is definitely not black and white, and neither is divorce, both which I understand personally. But , from my opinion anyway, this film is not about a child who just happened to have a mental illness (depression), but this child was a victim of trauma, a consequence of his parents divorce, which developed in depression and then suicide. It’s not the other way round, that he was “mental” and the parents did all they could.
They did do all they could. They loved him. But, ultimately, they were the source for his trauma, and the horrible domino effect of events thereafter.

    • @aka4god
      @aka4god Рік тому +2

@JPH2001 yes, that was the son's reason for why he was feeling that way.
But throughout the movie, he seemed to come up with other excuses too.
He felt overwhelming sadness coming from everywhere. He blamed his mother then his father. The kids at school.
It's important to note that the doctor diagnosed him with Acute Depression, a sudden onset of depression.
How long were the parents divorced?
And the ending, where the parents are getting along he he seemed happy, he still took his life... geez, I just hate they left the treatments. @JPH2001 yes, that was the son's reason for why he was feeling that way.

The movie feels so tragic..like even more tragic with each turn. Towards the end, maybe it was the framing. But I just knew when Nick placed the kettle on the stove something really didn't feel right. And then it just have to be. Just tragic.
The movie and acting reflects the reality of modern family to me. Each family member mired in his/her own lot, with little spare resources whether emotional/mental/physical to go around even for those we really care about, and just incapable to reach out to understand and help adequately another drowning soul. I see it all the time, everywhere. Fits right in w current research that father figures play crucial roles in their developing children's lives. And their absence are statistically shown to be very detrimental to many vital aspects of the child's development, be it emotional, academics, addictions, children out of wedlock etc. Edit: Maybe it was the way things turned from being so crazy and desperate to being so perfect so suddenly.. It's like Nick already decided when, and how things would end.

Just watched the Son on Netflix. This really hit home. I kinda find it’s the mother’s fault. Living with my mother I kinda get it. Nicholas even said when his father left all she did was talk bad about the father. And I’m sure there was a lot of tears and her own depression. I wouldn’t be surprised she blamed him or look at her son in disgust due to resembling his dad or have common behavior traits. Stuck in that kinda environment would probably want to delete yourself too. And blame his dad with hate.

I liked the film but I get what you’re saying. They made me sympathize with a clueless father and not really for the depressed son. I thought the lesson was memorable though. Hearing that gunshot and seeing what the Dad had to experience afterwards made me not want to ever do that to my parents. I say it works in the end for the impressionable reminder to not do that to your parents, and it could help some people avoid the decision to kill themselves, which is a hard thing to do.

This movie would have worked a lot better if it had taken place in say the 1960's or 1970's. The general lack of any comprehension about depression from these people is quite unbelievable to be honest. We currently live in a world where mental health is still misunderstood but come on: these upper class, educated and privileged parents would not have been so irritatingly ignorant. It's like they live in an alternative universe or time warp. Your son is self-harming, telling you very clearly that he's severely depressed and then he actually has an attempt and they're just like "what? I don't get it?". I mean I could even understand them bringing him home from the hospital to a certain extent knowing the horrors that can and do occur in residential treatment centers but for them to do so and not lock away any and all dangerous items upon his return is ridiculous: let along leaving a LOADED GUN in the same space it's always been AFTER you had a full conversation about it is just plain stupid. All the adults in this film are severely lacking in numerous areas: both mom and dad have more than a few brain cells missing in the intelligence department and neither of them could give the kid a simple acknowledgment that their divorce had caused him immense trauma. People say the son couldn't express himself but he sounded clear as a bell to me. It's too bad because I liked the tone of the film, the cinematography and the acting: it's just that the script and the story were in the end unbelievably bad. I know the movie is called "The Son" and that's supposed to be clever because the dad is actually "the son" and the movie is essentially all from his viewpoint but the actual character of "the son" is severely neglected in development. I don't even need to mention how predictable the suicide was. That being said, I didn't hate this movie: it just had the potential to actually be something but in the end it failed. Figure out a way to portray a parent's confusion and frustration without making them completely irresponsible, ignorant and stupid and you just might find a powerful and tragic film with some pretty great actors. Too bad it turned out this way.....

This whole movie was about demonic possessions. And how they go unnoticed.... its such a sad movie, the son battles depression. Through God's word we know thats the spirit of depression. Also anxiety and suicide and more he has. The devil will always tempt you. The devil tempted him and found an opening when he realized his parents split. So thags where the darkness crept in. Then it fucks with his head daily. He spaces out goes into small lil transes. And starts to get more aggressive overtime. Because the more he feeds the demon the stronger it gets. Think about it he feels sad and he cant take the weight of the world. Whats the weight ? The weight is the feeling of having demons hold you down.
Then they do what all parents do they took u to the hospital where they just feed the demon even more. So the demon tells the kid, the boy its taking over, that hes useless and that he should kill himself. The son listens. So he has to act and deceive. The devil is a liar. So he does what he does. He lies and gets the boy out the hospital. But the devil is a liar so he keeps lying through the boy..... makes him backtrack and harp on the old relationship his parents had. Toxic if you ask me, toxic aka demonic. The the devil tempts him with a gun. After the knife incidents. If the devil couldnt "accidentally" cut a vein deep enough to kill him, he would do what he did. Which was going and getting the gun. The devil was aware it was in the house. Thats giving the devil access to use thes things in your home against you..... im really breaking this down for yall i hope you understand. Cause while im watching this, i bet the true essence of this film will go over so many heads. But no, the devil mocks you by doing so. He's literally telling people theyre too dumb to realize. But you dont have to be
That was never the son speaking .... barley at all through this movie the son was never there.
Ummmm yeah i cant believe nobody said that he needs Jesus Christ ... but this is how people really are in real life .... blind. Blinded by the enemy. He even puts it in movies and people still act blind to the snare. May God open your eyes to the truth. In all its glory
I ask whoever sees my comment to go and speak to the lord ask him to show you the truth and nothing but the truth. If you wish to be aware of whats around you, ask for his guidance. Cause for most it apears through the flesh. Yes.
On another note this movie did good getting straight the point if you ask me. They showed you how people act in these situations. How they act blind to what the child is going through. Parents are suppose to protect us. Yet they don't even know this is the reality of our world. So kids go undelivered all the time. And his acting not being good, id say that's because they wanted to keep him in a state of disconnect. That's how it really is. Chaos. N the devils first task is to break the family then the person it wants. also this being pg-13 is alarming. As a 13 yr old this movie would puzzle me so much. Only cause yall didn't see demons or blood doesn't mean the two aren't connected. Can i get a HELLO

For real though, Zeller’s next movie kinda has to be called The Holy Spirit right?

Really fair review Austin and I agree with you having seen it. I think I came at it from a different expectation as I saw the stage play in London and although I found it a tough experience, it worked far better than this film. I’m not sure what happened to the script but it certainly didn’t feel this stilted and weak on stage, so I’d be curious to see how different that is. I also agree with the sympathy of jackman and I didn’t feel that on stage (Hopkins character isn’t even in that for a start) and my memory is that I really didn’t like the father much at all so think they’ve altered that for film because it’s jackman. As for Zen I agree with you and I also had the baggage of the actor I saw in stage who was very very good. This performance felt a bit all over the place to me.

I had the screening press today in my country. I agree with all of what you said... HOWEVER... Anthony Hopkins with his 5 minutes scenes...oh my, he devours the entire play
