All of Nick's and Joseph's critiques are very valid. But It's not a bad movie because the eternal theme of parents not understanding their child is also very valid.

I think the decision to go back and get him from the hospital was solely the dad's and mom went along with it. She recognized all of this but wants so desperately to entertain the idea of getting her ex back, that she went along with it. The entire time, Nicholas played on his dad's guilt, much harder than the mom's because he knew dad had a more heightened sense of guilt.

  • @tarunbishop3704
    @tarunbishop3704 Рік тому +3

Very good points. I agree the psychiatrist was too demeaning toward Nicholas, which may have partially explained why Nicholas would have hated the hospital so much. Another thing that bothered me about that scene was that the psychiatrist seemed to treat the decision as a very dualistic, binary, black-and-white decision, like "you must decide right now: either Nicholas goes home with you, or Nicholas stays here for several weeks." There wasn't any discussion of "if Nicholas goes home, let's make sure we give you these tools, remove access to any weapons, and have regular visits," or "if Nicholas stays here, we can arrange more frequent and/or longer visits, and listen to what Nicholas might want so we can make the hospital experience more manageable." It seemed like they treated it as a choice between Nicholas's autonomy and Nicholas's safety, with no discussion of how to address both needs. It also seems problematic to pressure them to make a decision so quickly. This is a major decision that deserves thoughtful consideration.
I worry that other viewers may watch that scene and just say "ah see, this is why we need to trust doctors/psychiatrists," while in reality, mental hospitals can indeed be horrible, violent places, and while it's important to acknowledge the expertise doctors and psychiatrists have, it's also important to acknowledge that medical professionals and hospitals are still part of oppressive and unjust systems. Of course sending Nicholas home under these circumstances was a devastating decision, but that doesn't mean leaving him at the hospital for several weeks with little-to-no visitation time was the only other option.

This movie was very realistic for me. I related to this because this is how I felt as a teenager, almost exactly. And I felt like my parents didn't get me, but they were so oblivious. I didn't understand anything. I was from a family that had decent amounts of money.

I saw the stage play in the West End London UK 2019, I thoroughly enjoyed it. No ‘crunchy’ performances, the ‘son’ behaved/acted like an every day teen, he wanted his father to want & love him, his stepmother didn’t want him living with them. I agree the family affluence /lifestyle isn’t anything I can realistically relate to (only dream of). Fish Jelly is my ‘go to’ for reviews 👍

One thing I discovered through being a mother this past decade + is that many many people just run through their lives and hardly focus on their kids at all! There is NO way I wouldn't notice my son's mental health declining or that he was missing school! That's just crazy. I love him more than anything & I genuinely care that he is ok. I personally have depression issues and grew up lower middle class without mental health resources until i became an adult and made it my responsibility. I'll have to catch The Father and just find Hopkins speech you mentioned. I think the two films that did this trope correctly were Elephant & We Need To Talk About Kevin with the latter being another wealthy family that I couldn't relate to. Maybe the film was attempting to depict a family that had no bond with one another...hence the depression of the child. Perhaps it was just poorly executed, but it meant to show the detachment of some parents when it comes to their children.

Thank you for watching this movie, so we don't have to!
It sounds like a huge missed opportunity to address a serious subject, perhaps with some new perspective or solution.
Having lived through having a teen who was "cutting" and depressed, and another one skipping school and dropping out, I think the better message would have been, "Here's the way OUT of this mess."
(Note: Both of the kids are now happy, functioning adults, hallelujah!)

I feel like this movie was made for parents, it kept pivoting toward the woes of how laborious it is to have to deal with a suicidal son. Which did a disservice to what the story should be about, which was the titular son in question - they made him feel like a serious inconvenience...almost a pest. The parents were aloof the entirety of the film, which I'm not sure is a commentary on "not seeing the signs" even though the red flags were neon bright. Everything was preventable I feel, especially keeping him in the hospital.

The acting was excellent, and I like the fact that is was very realistic in how it dealt with the main characters in relationship to the troubled son. In life things are not always clear cut. I think you questioning why he did it I’d you guys missing the point, sadly you can have nothing wrong in your life and still be depressed and have suicidal thoughts, honestly his level of depression is way beyond the standard it’s gone into major depression which is what I had, the only thing they did wrong is the writing about him telling his parents that he is sick usually they keep it to themselves and to do it multiple times wouldn’t happen honestly, the parenting having no idea why is depressed and being oblivious to his mental health is so right though and they love to blame it on the kid and not themselves
I think this movie got it right about what serious depression looks like
I just think it’s off because it felt like actors acting and that no one on site was probably close so they don’t feel like a real family, even disconnect families have a connection in one way or another

This will Not be a movie that I will watch, because right when Joseph said “I felt like the director watched like some after school special about troubled teens, and then wrote down, like everything”.. When will movie Directors, and Producers get that you can’t continue to have very low plot/energy of a movie and expect that the well known actors are going to pull up the ratings?, and when will the actors setup to the plate and say NO I won’t take this part to try to get a paycheck from the box office?…it just doesn’t work anymore, hasn’t worked for years.

The movie is trying to illustrate the struggle of a family of neuroatypical individuals.
The most important character here is the grandpa who is clearly a sadistic grandiose narcissistic psychopath who, as many of these type of individuals, do not have the emotional struggles normal people have and so they can easily excel in professions that require zero regard the other people emotions(business, politics, legals, surgeon, etc…) so they tend to be pretty powerful or rich when they are in the right environment. That’s why he raised his child, the father(who inevitably inherited the grandpa’s genetic traits), in a pretty hostile environment. This made the father hate the grandpa and made him a bit empathetic(probably thanks to the grandma who was also left to suffer alone with her son) so he decided to be a better human. That’s why he married a super emotive woman because he know she could fill the emotional gaps of his children just like his mother(the grandma) and maybe bring stability to the family.
So the child grew up as a sociopath with strong moral values thanks to the mother’s love. But he inevitably hit the wall of late adolescence/early adulthood crisis and his sense of emptiness started getting worse making him suffer a lot(probably due to conflicting emotions).
The biggest factor of last act of the child is the apathy of the stepmother coupled with the attitudinal incompetence of the medical corp.
Come on, who wants to be healed by apparently fool sociopaths of the turn who are there only to do the only job they don't completely suck at? I mean the medical corp failed to reassure him. That made him perceive them as weird and non sensical making him even more depressed. So he asked to be brought home so he could end his misery by killing himself once and far all.
The Father is the hero trying hard to understand emotions that are completely out of his emotional spectrum so he could help his beloved son.
    At least that's my understanding.

in real life, the mother has financial motivation to not commit the child bc she'll lose child support. the kid is angry, awful and manipulative because the true victimization is the child being stuck in a crappy judicial system that allows those underage to determine their medical care. terrible mothering collides with...and is reinforced by...weak mental health laws even in this same scenario of guaranteed violence. the circumstances may be a little different but it's just as mind-boggling. note to audience, in Oregon, it doesn't wrap up in 2hrs.

This whole movie was about demonic possessions. And how they go unnoticed.... its such a sad movie, the son battles depression. Through God's word we know thats the spirit of depression. Also anxiety and suicide and more he has. The devil will always tempt you. The devil tempted him and found an opening when he realized his parents split. So thags where the darkness crept in. Then it fucks with his head daily. He spaces out goes into small lil transes. And starts to get more aggressive overtime. Even the creepy looks. Eyes are the window to the soul. That was the angry demon showing how much he truly wanted them all to suffer. His son wasn't challenging him when they had that convo. A demon was challenging him. Because the more he feeds the demon the stronger it gets. Think about it he feels sad and he cant take the weight of the world. Whats the weight ? The weight is the feeling of having demons hold you down.
Then they do what all parents do they took u to the hospital where they just feed the demon even more. So the demon tells the kid, the boy its inside of. that he's useless and that he should kill himself. The son listens. So he has to act and deceive. The devil is a liar. So he does what he does. He lies and gets the boy out the hospital. But the devil is a liar so he keeps lying through the boy..... makes him backtrack and harp on the old relationship his parents had. Toxic if you ask me, toxic aka demonic. The the devil tempts him with a gun. After the knife incidents. If the devil couldnt "accidentally" cut a vein deep enough to kill him, he would do what he did. Which was going and getting the gun. The devil was aware it was in the house. Thats giving the devil access to use thes things in your home against you..... im really breaking this down for yall i hope you understand. Cause while im watching this, i bet the true essence of this film will go over so many heads. But no, the devil mocks you by doing so. He's literally telling people theyre too dumb to realize. But you dont have to be
That was never the son speaking .... barley at all through this movie the son was never there.
Ummmm yeah i cant believe nobody said that he needs Jesus Christ ... but this is how people really are in real life .... blind. Blinded by the enemy. He even puts it in movies and people still act blind to the snare. May God open your eyes to the truth. In all its glory
I ask whoever sees my comment to go and speak to the lord ask him to show you the truth and nothing but the truth. If you wish to be aware of whats around you, ask for his guidance. Cause for most it apears through the flesh. Yes.
On another note this movie did good getting straight the point if you ask me. They showed you how people act in these situations. How they act blind to what the child is going through. Parents are suppose to protect us. Yet they don't even know this is the reality of our world. So kids go undelivered all the time. And his acting not being good, id say that's because they wanted to keep him in a state of disconnect. That's how it really is. Chaos. N the devils first task is to break the family then the person it wants. also this being pg-13 is alarming. As a 13 yr old this movie would puzzle me so much. Only cause yall didn't see demons or blood doesn't mean the two aren't connected. Can i get a HELLO
LOVE IS ENOUGH BUT ONLY GOD N JESUS'S LOVE!! FOR IT STRENGTHENS US
