  • The Son finally expands to wide release this weekend and sadly there is a a big glaring problem with the movie that left me mixed on my entire experience with the film. THE SON seemed like an out of this ball park type of movie... with a cast such as Hugh Jackman, Vanessa Kirby, Laura Dern, and so many more plus it is directed by Florian Zeller.. the director of the incredible THE FATHER... this should have been perfect but ended up feeling very shallow in its attempt to discuss depression... now the film is getting mixed reviews... some hate it... some love it... I Zach Pope liked it but had quite a few problems with it that left me not able to grasp my full emotions around the film. This is Zach Pope's Movie review for THE SON, why the son is not good, why the son should have been perfect, and my problem with the son.

No disrespect too the young actor but if he was replaced with a more talented actor like Jack Dylan Grazer this would be a Oscar contender.

I don’t know man, Zen did an amazing job on pulling you in to the story with the little things like the pauses, the natural awkwardness he added to the character to where it made you feel like it wasn’t all scripted as a drama but like you were actually there to the viewer. That’s just my opinion respectfully but I think he had a beautiful performance.

What was the scene with the intern? Was weird I thought Hugh was gonna end up being gay. I’m gonna assume it was kind of hugh picturing what his son will be like when he was older?

That’s what I said damn he zesty too? Why he lookin at that boy ass like that? He was starring him up and down, I definitely got gay vibes from that scene as well.

Yes he was picturing his son as that's the way he wished his son was. That's why he buys him that coat. Hes trying to slowly make the son more normal and successful looking, trying to encourage him..that's why he compliments the intern on the coat

    I didnt like this movie...
I get wanting the audience to be "clueless" like the parents and only showing things from their perspective was a choice. But it was a bad 1 in my opinion
It makes the son Nick and his problems seem like nothing really. Like he was only depressed because his parents divorced. Like thats it?? Divorce rates at 50%
    Give us a little more
Dad never really goes into detail on why he left the mom. Other than being unhappy, but what was she doing or not doing?
Dad leaving the gun in the house
Mom literally comes to the dad scared of her son and not being able to control him anymore. But you both punk out when a Dr tells you we NEED TO KEEP HIM or HE WILL TRY AGAIN.
I seriously thought he was developing psychopathic thoughts of killing ppl. Which is why he kept saying the cuts (on the tops of his arms) "relieved" him. They didnt show cuts inside trying to kill himself until the end
They never address anything with the son other than him being depressed about the divorce. We never find out where he was going for 2 months.
Like go a little further with the son
You both know your son was not going to school but NONE OF YOU actually physically take him there yourself lmao
    Like come on man
Im a parent of 4 kids and there was just wayyyyyy too many stupid things the parents did that made no sense at all.

    Just watched this one.
Will have to give a ton of spoilers so I hope I am warning everyone!!!!
I think its main issue comes from a complete lack of understanding about depression.
The movie makes it so incredibly obvious how its going to end....I had no spoilers and yet I could predict it as soon as the boy moved with his father lol I was like "ok...this kid is either killing himself or killing someone"
And the reality is that these things tend not to be so incredibly obvious. Like...a suicidal kid is not going to tell you straight in your face that he does not wish to live anymore. And if he does, I hope everyone with half a brain is going to take notice and at least ask themselves "what the hell did I just listen?"
This ends up severely removing immersion from the movie. It becomes a very ordinary soap opera which is clearly going for extra drama.
Like...the scene where the stepmother correctly suspects the kid.....only to scream all her suspicions in the very same room as the kid LOL Who the hell would do that? Its like....if you are really becoming suspicious you are not going to address the kid so blunt. You are going to be scared about him.
Its like....everyone in the movie is just completely moronic.
The parents who get a kid who they know has lied a lot and who they know has attempted suicide already. And they just decide to trust the kid once again. Because yes.....that´s going to work amazing! What was that thing about utter stupidity? I seem to have read something about trying the same thing and expecting different results.
And of course....the top of the top! A father who listens to his son tell him he cant stand life and he has noticed a shotgun at the father´s place. And this moronic father just forgets about it.....at this point I was hoping the kid would shoot the father because he just deserved it for how moronic.
I got myself wishing the kid would actually kill the parents at the end lol
I know that the Columbine killers did have a website where they stated they wanted to kill. But at least I am pretty positive they did not blatantly tell their parents they were wanting to die. And they also did not blatantly stopped caring about school and stuff. Its like...how could this kid in the movie be more obvious????
And yet the parents did not think he needed to stay in custody of professionals???
There is a limit to suspension of disbelief.
And also, please do not blame the younger stepmother! The movie at times seemed like it wanted to do that. But please don´t! She was likely the only adult who I had some hope might figure out and really help. If those parents had stayed together, its possible something else would have triggered their kid´s mental issues. And then they would have been as oblivious together as they were separated. And there would not have been a stepmother to notice a knife under the bed or the kid hanging around at the park instead going to school. The crazy parents might have missed all that by themselves.....they were that moronic!

best comment i agree 100% my mother made me watch the movie and said " the boy is just like you " told her how i gound the movie in my opinion bad taste since it really doesnt give any proper context of whats going on in the boys life and just feels like 70% of the movie is just the dad which makes it kinda boring at some point, the acting was barely good in my opinion, and the script was just very,, simple/lazy in general, it gives an outside image of what depression would look like but its not what you expect when watching it, like its just off because the boy is very open minded about talking on how he hates living, which tbh i think many can agree this is just a weird way of showing depression

I liked the flick. For 2 hours it does leave you waiting for the punch in the movie. The kid leaves you wk dering what does he do all those months not in school?? Taking a walk is not convincing. Should have shown a bit on what he really is up to. Also the relationship is mostly focused on just hugh and the son but you dont see the past with his mother.. my way of thinking could have been prob disturbing but it would have been more bold than just his parents being divorced and him dealing with it,depression wise. Everytime his dad ask what's wrong the kid is not being filling honest. If it would have gone that when his dad ask him what's going on you dont know till later.i was expecting since his parent got a divorce he then go all depressed that he started doing drugs and selling himself in the streets and at school since theres no shame.

The criticisms I hear about The Son’s story are very similar to my problems with EEAAO (as someone who has also struggled with depression, and specifically existential depression). What do you think of that comparison?

This movie was just bad. They stuck Anthony Hopkins in for ten minutes in a largely pointless scene obviously to get his name on the bill. I guess because it desls with serious issues you're not supposed ro criticize it, but seriously it was unbelievably predictable. The doctor said dont take him out, so of course we know what's coming. Hugh Jackman also took him out against medical advice and...left a gun in the house. Really? I mean how dumb are you. And the kid playing Nicolas i guess that flat lifeless portrayal was meant to show depression but frankly it just made you not really cared he killed himself. So many allusions to side issues that went nowhere. He's not going to school anyway so why have one scene where he's at school...and we never see any of those people again. The bizarre thing with the intern? What was the point of that? And the plot "twist" at the end i guess was to evoke some sympathy for Hugh Jackman but he was so unbelievably stupid to bring his suicidal kid home at all much less to a home with a gun its hard to feel much for him either. But the flat portrayal of the kid was really the nail in the coffin because not only do you know ahead of time hes going to kill himself you dont even care that much.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I think in terms of not touching on themes of depression enough though the movie was mostly supposed to be focused on a father-son dynamic. The son was going through depression so it was more a plot device and not the main theme. It did make it hard to take as seriously and would’ve enriched the film if that aspect was handled more realistically though. I found it hard to believe a family today would be so out of touch with why their son would be depressed and not recommend medications etc. I also think it was an awkward transition dialogue wise from a French play to an American movie. And the direction of the sons performance was very uneven. I struggled with the ending and was both moved but frustrated. I don’t want to say manipulated but that’s how I felt. I did overall enjoy watching it and I think it’s better than a lot of generic films out there

i actually related to this movie, as in the movie it talked about Nicholas not answering their questions anymore and it’s hard for a kid to really tell their parent what they’re going through cause they feel like their parents won’t truly understand, which is why the parents didn’t really understand why he was so depressed cause he wouldn’t tell his father what pain he truly was feeling. Also even if the parents would’ve recommended medications he probably would’ve cried not to be on them. that’s why he didn’t wanna stay in the hospital he didn’t want to accept treatment
