    The Son is a 2022 drama film directed by Florian Zeller from a screenplay by him and Christopher Hampton. It is based on Zeller's 2018 stage play of the same name. The film serves as a follow-up to 2020's The Father. It stars Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby, Zen McGrath, Hugh Quarshie, and Anthony Hopkins.
    The Son had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on 7 September 2022, and is scheduled to be released in the United States on 25 November, by Sony Pictures Classics.

      I just watched the film and… it broke me. I have a family member that is similar to the character of Nicholas and I think his performance and his writing was very realistic. The 29% score of rotten tomatoes shocked me. This is an incredible film that left me an impact and I am sure it will stay with me for a long time…

    Great review! Out of all the reviews I watched so far yours is the best, you discussed the meaning and execution of the film on both ends of the spectrum.
    Personally I thought the movie was well done just too depressing for my taste. It also was a bit frustrating because I found myself feeling that I was watching a man who didn't know how to love his son. But that's just me!
    P.S. almost forgot to mention Padme is my mother 😁

    My mother is Padme Amidala. I'll give it a watch. A tear jerker. Sounds crazy but,when I saw Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, made me cry buckets. I don't know why.I guess Lyle hit deep inside my emotional well and brought something to the surface for me to release. I felt so relaxed and grateful when I left the cinema.Who knew films can be so therapeutic :)

    Loved The Father, it's one of the best movies of 2021 in my opinion... but The Son bored the shit out of me. The actors made the film watchable... well, all of them, except the one who plays the son. The title should have been The Wuss. Or The Burden. I know it was about depression, but depressed people can be much more complex than what we get in this movie.

    i loved your review ive watched several reviews and everyone seemed really disconnected from the movie, as someone who studies psychology and gas experienced living w a loved one w severe depression i thought it was pretty accurate and realistic even the parts were the kid acts really disrespectful or annoying …people that haven’t experienced living w a depressed person may think u can only love and care for them but its not right u can get annoyed at them and tired and mad because severely depressive people have so much pain inside that they can sometimes canalize it through hostility annoyance and even complete indiference to others (of course not all of them) is as if the depressive ans suicidal thoughts are sooo loud that everything else is on lower volume even during happy moments the thoughts an sentiments persist and i think the movie portrayed that perfectly i have to agree w your opinion that if you dont feel anything watching this movie you are a heartless asshole or in my opinion u have not experienced this situation first hand some critics said the ending was too tragic i think it was trying to portray that in situations like this “love is not enough”

    Padme Amidala is my mother! No, not really. I'd love to check out this film Brandon! The plot reminds me of ORDINARY PEOPLE (1980) another drama of a troubled son who suffers from PTSD after his brother's accidental death. The movie won the Best Picture Oscar that year as well as Best Supporting Actor for the guy who plays the troubled son. The movie will most likely affect me in so many ways too since I was a child of divorced parents. Laura Dern was in a much more depressing film at least for me. It was THE FAULT IN OUR STARS which was about two teens dealing with cancer and I was watching it in our living room with my mom while she was on her deathbed dying from breast cancer. I can never watch that movie again. But I will watch this one though. I'm quite sure it is a great film like you said.

    OK. I just saw this movie tonight. I have to admit I put off watching this movie for long time cuz I knew it would be depressing and long.
    I read some reviews how they basically was saying it was the worse movie of all time. And I'm like "what?" Lol. Far from it?!!
    I thought the acting was great, as expected. I'm sure lot of parents/people would be frustrated cuz they don't think about mental issues. They immediately feel angry and discipline them without not really trying to understand the kid. And when it's all in the open it tears your on how to make a decision. Do you take matters in your own hands cuz you have faith in yourself that things will get better? or.. do you do what is very hard and turn them over to doctors and let them try to treat them? I don't have kids but it really makes you think differently on how to approach and understand a child/teen cuz it's more than just growing pains. Most of them suffer from real depression and they don't know why.

    Reckon the reason for the negative reviews is because the teenage trauma stems from a pretty normal, run of the mill divorce. I'm sure that if the kid was traumatized by, say, growing up in church, it would have been nominated for awards and given some standing ovations

    This had potential, but went on to hit all the wrong notes. As much as I liked Zeller's The Father, this one is a mess. Zeller seems to have lost his magic, and McGrath, playing the son, is totally unconvincing throughout the film, as he doesn't seem to understand that portraying a character involves more than just pulling the same sad or bored face all the time. Hopkins' scene was the only interesting bit.
    It made me think of a movie like Ordinary People for a moment, because of the internal suffering of the son. Comparing the two only makes you realize just how much this movie leaves to be desired.

  • @brucesimpson5257
    @brucesimpson5257 Рік тому

    Whoa! I just watched “The Son”. I also just read the less than ecstatic reviews. I strongly disagree. It hit to my soul. I was that young man growing up. I identify with his pain because I felt his pain. His home life was stunningly familiar. My parents weren’t divorced but they should have been. I can understand why some people may not relate to this movie but wow! It took my breath away like an unforeseen punch to my gut. Depression is as real and as serious as any major physical injury but it is the least understood and appreciated by those who have not suffered from it. It can last a lifetime. It can even be sublimated, covered up and coped with until suddenly it is triggered by certain events or a singular event to the point of a dangerous crisis where it can drive you into that Dark Place from which there can be no return. This movie was moving and powerful particularly for those of us who have felt the anguish, frustration and unimaginable pain which was so skillfully reflected in performance of the young actor who played the role of Nicholas. I will watch this movie again and again. Simply sensorily overwhelming for me.

    Yes great movie! Really shows how detached from reality these parents are with the need and care of their severely depressed son. I mean this movie is so good at showing all the signs and cries for help that the parents missed. And as a bonus to all those crises (knife under bed and cutting) the brilliant writer and director says “hey let’s make the parent forget about the gun in the house”. 5 out of 5 diamonds!

  • @Ruimas28
    @Ruimas28 Рік тому

    Its funny.
    I kind of agree the kid did portray something which was a bit over the top. But I will go so far as to say the kid was giving psychopath vibes at some points. And I was kind of expecting him to kill his brother or his parents lol And that I am going to blame the movie for really going over the top. Its not the kid´s acting. The problem is they told him to act something which is a bit beyond what the story was about.
    The parents too. The problem is that its all over the top. Like, they get all these incredible red flags and they do not understand the size of the problem they have. True that some people might be that oblivious but the parents are really over the top oblivious.
    There are many scenes which are downright over the top. I will give some examples:
    . The father listens to kid telling him he found a shotgun in the house, right when they were discussing the kid keeping a knife under his bed. And the father does not decide to throw the shotgun away as example? That would be the ohhh so obvious answer that is preposterous that father just ignores the conversation. Its like it never happened in the next scene.
    . The stepmother correctly being scared about the kid (she was the only adult with eyes apparently), but she decides to just freak out and blurt all that stuff in front of the kid??? Ohh well....she was being adult up to that point but then very much ruined it all. That scene was so obviously over the top dramatic. None in real life would scream all that stuff right near a kid they are that afraid about. If nothing else....even for self preservation lol If she is honestly scared about the kid, she is not going to antagonize him right in his face. If she thinks the kid might hurt his own baby brother....pretty sure she can use her brain and also think the kid might seriously hurt her if he gets mad at her.
    . And then you also have the over top scene at the hospital with the kid showing signs of being aggressive and all. And the parents still think its safe? At that point I wanted the kid to kill the parents because they deserved it lol
    You see the pattern. The problem is the movie just goes constantly over the top. And mostly, a depression is a very serious thing and its really not so easy. Suicidal people do give some warnings but they are usually not so blatantly over the top and in your face. Most people who really try to kill themselves do it very much under the radar of their family and friends. And they do it because if they really want to do it, they will kind of manipulate their closed ones into a false safety. More like the kid acted close to the end. Yup....that´s how he would be acting at the hospital too. And that would have been terribly hard to deal with like it is. Because when you have a kid who is still going to school, still studying, planning for college, you then want to overlook the other signs because you want to hope its going to be alright. But if you have a kid that really gives all possible negative signs, then you would have to be blind not to realize you are in serious trouble.
    Take as example the Columbine shooters as a very well known example in US history. Sure they gave plenty of warnings that they were planning something terrible. They did! True! And people noticed! True! But they also kind of played around and fooled people by keeping with school and planning for college. Which, were things that ultimately fooled the parents. And that´s how reality goes. Its not black and white. Which is what makes it hard when your kid says he would like to kill a classmate. You really do not know if the kid can go that far. And if you watch the kid trying to follow with his life in someway, you will want to think its fine.
    I think the movie had it all in place to do this properly. They could have played a bit more with the kid trying to earn trust with being a good big brother. Or trying to earn trust by attending school and telling the psychologist what everyone wanted to listen. Then you would have had a much deeper story about how depression can be really hard and how suicidal people can really do it under the radar (which is usually the "successful ones")
    I think this is where ultimately a lot of people are coming at the kid because subconsciously their brains understands that was all quite a bit over the top. Unfortunately, the kid is getting all the flak when its really a deeper problem with the movie not doing the story justice.
